    October 28, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

So, having taken yet another test for Lissy to ensure she can get into France this evening, we are waiting locally to the test site in case we need to return to repeat it. So while sitting waiting for the result for 40 minutes, Lissy thought it a good idea to get some food on board to see her through until at least lunchtime.Read more

  • Bordeaux

    October 28, 2021 in France ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Well we are here and landed safely. Slight queue waiting to get into France through border controls. In fact we spent more time in the queue to do this than we did in the air for the flight. Quick dash to get the car and now at our very cheap and cheerful one night pit stop to save us a drive anywhere tonight.
Not entirely sure it was what Lissy was expecting but she took to the sleeping arrangements better than I thought she would when I first saw it. Only thing is - I’m not sure I will sleep tonight with Lissy up there 😂

  • Day 2 - On The Road

    October 29, 2021 in France ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Drove from Bordeaux to Angoulême, even though the property we were going to look at had cancelled. Angoulême was a lot larger than we had thought and had a lovely centre which was very typically French with lots of alleyways and small shops.
Visited a lovely indoor market followed by a little wander through the streets and finished with a lovely patisserie shop before heading on.

  • Day 2 Gout Rossingnol

    October 29, 2021 in France ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

The Wreck - We knew it was going to be and it was!! We just wanted to have a look and make sure this isn’t what we wanted to do in terms of a project. Confirmed our decision. A great location with open views, but by the time you did up all that was needed, you might as well have knocked it down and started a new build.
So crossed off our list (as we guessed it would be) and onwards to see what something else may look like.

  • Day 2 Grenouillier

    October 29, 2021 in France ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

So next up was just outside Gout Rossignol to Grenouillier.
Pulled into an open piece of land as a car park and then walked back to the rear of the house. Before entering we went for a little walk of the outside which was approximately 2 acres - backing onto farm land. Inside immediately it was bright and warm with a lovely feel to it. Downstairs was a kitchen dining room, bathroom, lounge, second lounge area, utility room with shower room and stairs to a bedroom. Stairs in hallway, led upstairs to two double bedrooms. Hallway also led into garage/small barn with its own upstairs capable of being made into rooms. Apparently from upstairs in the main house was covered access into the loft area which again could be further room space.
Bearing in mind this trip was just to see what sort of properties were out there and also get an idea of the areas a little better - this property unfortunately ticked a lot of the boxes we wanted, which then tugged at us more than just a little. Space for a swimming pool and numerous other outside projects.
The house was full of the owners and currents tenants belongings and even with all of this felt huge.

  • Day 2 La Marteille

    October 29, 2021 in France ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Last one of the day was in La Marteille. Drove into an enclosed courtyard with a barn on one side and the house on the other side. Inside immediately felt dark and very claustrophobic. The place itself was actually fine but definitely not one we would be interested in. Downstairs was a kitchen diner and a lounge. Upstairs were three bedrooms and a bathroom. The barn opposite was huge but was a very old barn in need of a lot of work to make anything of it. The only real selling point was a pool which looked in a good state.
So ended on a low when compared to house 2 but that’s how it goes.
So departed and made our way to the guest house we had waiting for the night - hopefully no bunk bed for Lissy!

  • La Rame Guest House & Château de Mavalei

    October 29, 2021 in France ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Finally arrived at our guest house for the next two nights - La Rame just outside of Chalais. Babette met us and showed us to our very lovely room. Gave us a recommendation on food which she assured us was not expensive, and then phoned and booked us at Château de Mavaleix which was 6 mins in the car!
Dropped our bags, and basically back out the door off for dinner.
Château de Mavaleix was lovely inside (a shame we only saw it at night time) and the couple running the chateau were charming and funny.
Had stonkingly brilliant food which anywhere else would have cost a small fortune - think the mains were about €15-20 which I guess is a normal night out in the UK.
Anyhow - ate food - lots of it, Teresa couldn’t finish her Pavlova unsurprisingly.
Then back for a very needed sleeps!!

  • Day 3 Thiviers

    October 30, 2021 in France ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

So up and out - off to Thiviers for their market which is held on a Saturday. Well known in the area as a busy well attended market. Only downside was, it had rained early morning and we still had Misty light rain when we arrived. So the market wasn’t quite as lively as we had expected. Still a good number of mainly food stalls, fab vegetables all locally sourced and fresh. Cheese, meats and duck - foie gras de canard.
After a walk around the stalls and nearby streets - a quick little grand crème and a couple chocolate chaud before setting off again.

  • Day 3 Périgueux

    October 30, 2021 in France ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We arrived in Périgueux to clear blue sky and bright sunshine. The view of the cathedral up on the hill was stunning. We parked and walked up to the cathedral gardens and found another Saturday market. We treated ourselves to three local artisan cheeses for supper and then sat in a bar in the sunshine. Next to us we’re and English couple who have a four bedroom house with pool halfway between Perigueux and Bergerac - we sat and chatted with them for a while, then headed off for a look around. It was just stunning, lots of little cobbled squares with exquisite boutique style shops, all linked together. Similar I suppose to The Lanes in Brighton but much, much more classy! We loved it. Stunning by day and must be romantic and beautiful at night!
Meandered back to the car and took the scenic route hone through as many villages as we could find, one very nice one was called Corgnac-sur-L’Isle. Back to the B&B - bread and cheese and a lazy evening in our room.
The name Périgueux comes from Petrocorii, a Latinization of Celtic words meaning "the four tribes" – the Gallic people that held the area before the Roman conquest. Périgueux was their capital city. In 200 BC, the Petrocorii came from the north and settled at Périgueux and established an encampment at La Boissière. After the Roman invasion, they left this post and established themselves on the plain of L'Isle, and the town of Vesunna was created. This Roman city was eventually embellished with amenities such as temples, baths, amphitheatres, and a forum. At the end of the third century AD, the Roman city was surrounded by ramparts, and the town took the name of Civitas Petrocoriorum.
In the 10th century, Le Puy-Saint-Front was constructed around an abbey next to the old Gallo-Roman city. It was organised into a municipality around 1182.
During the year 1940, many Jews from Alsace and Alsatians were evacuated to Périgueux.

  • Day 4 Pouyouleix

    October 31, 2021 in France ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

So up and at it again. Lovely breakfast having had an extra hour in bed due to the clocks going forward. Off for our last house view.
Met with Bjorn the German who took us out to a property in Pouyouleix.
Lissy immediately announced - Not for me as we pulled up outside a property in what seemed like good condition - as in had been worked on fairly recently.
One main lounge leading to a raised kitchen and small bedroom with toilet shower room off that. Further downstairs toilet - then upstairs to two almost mirror bedrooms, one just slightly larger than the other. Further larger bathroom between them.
Outside was a small door to a cellar with a low ceiling but bone dry - no signs of damp anywhere.
Further outside utility room with oil tank and heating system - and an old bread oven. Also outside small gate to a genuine well.
At the rear open views down to a lake, and fields to the distance. Property consisted of land down to the tree line just before the lake which is owned by the next door neighbour.
Said our goodbyes to Bjorn the former tank engineer - and headed off towards the airport for the trip home.
