      Denham (Monkey Mia)

      Heute verbrachten wir den grössten Teil des Tages in Monkey Mia. Zuerst schauten wir bei der zweiten Fütterung der Delfine zu. Diese ist genau reglementiert. Es gibt nur für 5 Weibchen maximal 3 Fische aufs Mal. Heute war ein Weibchen mit einem 10 Tage alten Kalb gekommen sowie ein weiteres Weibchen. Nach einer längeren Pause kehrten die Delfine in der gleichen Konfiguration für die dritte Fütterung zurück.
      Anschliessend badeten wir ausgiebig in der wunderschönen Bucht und sahen nebst Delfinen auch Rochen und Schildkröten. Ich stand irrtümlich im Wasser auf etwas, das sich als Wasserschlange entpuppte. Sie schwamm dann hastig davon, ich habe keine Ahnung, ob sie auch beissen könnte und Gift injiziert.
      Ende Nachmittag ging's zur Little Lagoon. Da es dort sehr windig war und es ausserdem Steinfische hatte, gab es hier kein weiteres Bad.      Read more

      Shark Bay

      Das nächste Peninsula (Halbinsel) Shark Bay stand an.
      Nach einem Besuch beim Shell Beach, der aus einer bis zu 10 Meter dicken Schicht aus Milliarden von Muscheln besteht, gings in den Francois Peron Nationalpark. Der Reifendruck musste auf 18 psi heruntergelassen werden, da die Strassen dort lediglich aus Sand bestehen. Der Weg zum Campground gestaltete sich als sehr bumpig. Doch es erwartete uns eine ruhige Bucht wo das türkis farbene Wasser auf roten Sand trifft. Währenddem Marco ein Kolossuem aus Steinen baute, sammelte ich Muscheln und Korallen.
      Auf dem Rückweg stoppten wir bei Monkey Mia, wo wir Delfine sowie eine Schildkröte sehr nah am Ufer sahen.      Read more

      mir mached üs fruäh am morgä uf vu kalbarri und mached nu diä letschtä chlinä wanderigä im nationalpark, bevor mir witer richtig shark bay günd.
      mir hend eigentli vor nuch ei nacht anerä tankstell, wo gratis isch, z schlafä, aber will mir so fruäh los sind hemmer gnuäg ziit zum bis ganz ufä fahrä. ufem ufä weg gümmer nu an shell beach. dr sandstrand bestaht us unzähligä, chlinä wisämuschlä. hammer nu niä en strand nur us muschlä gseh😍
      bim ufä fahrä hemmer au nu e begegnig mitemä riesä adler. er hoggt direkt am strassärand underemä busch. riiiesig isch er gsi. leider hets nur fürnäs foti bim wegfluägä glanget. aber ich glaub mir hend en adler ider natur nu niä so nach gseh. unglaublich gross sinds 🦅🦅🦅 es isch en keilschwanzadler gsi.
      das einzigä grösserä (obwohl gross nöd das richtigä wort isch) dörfli a dr shark bay isch denham.
      üseri erst nacht verbringed mir in monkey mia. der ort isch bekannt für sini delfin.
      es isch jedoch chlei wiedersprüchig. d delfin da wärded gfuätteret und me chan das de gu luägä.
      fruähner hend d fischer, d fischrestä is wasser gworfä, wo d delfin aglockt het.
      und hüt wird das eifach nu witergfuährt, aber mit rangers.
      mir sind üs nunig ganz sicher eb mir das würgli wend gu luägä. dr ort selber isch aber au so sehr schü. überall hets emus und z wasser isch absolut klar.
      mir entscheided üs für en strandspaziergang und siehe da mir gsehnd zwei delfinmamis mit ihrnä jungä. es gseht so us as würeds gad unterricht gi, wiä asmä jagt. hammer si sind mega nach und so erübrigt sich das au gad mitem gu luägä wes delfin fuättered. mir hends mega nachgseh und de nu zwei chlini.
      am nächstä tag gümmer gu kajak fahrä und schnorchlä. also dr robin mir isch z wasser z chalt😂
      diä nächstä täg vrbringed mir mit denham und umgebig erkundä.
      mir schlafed zweimal irgendwo im nirgendwo (isch erlaubt) mit wunderschönä sunnäuntergäng und sternähimmel.

      Shark Bay

      Hier haben wir nun unseren nördlichsten Punkt der Reise erreicht. Shark Bay Shire. Sharks haben wir leider nicht gesehen und auch die heißersehnten Wale, die es hier wohl geben soll, lassen sich nicht blicken. Dafür aber laufen wir am Shell Beach entlang. Hier gibt es keinen Sand, der Boden besteht nur aus kleinen weißen Muscheln. Der Strand erstreckt sich über 100 Kilometer weit und die Muschelschalen sind zwischen sieben und zehn Meter tief.
      Der Ozean hier ist doppelt so salzig wie auf dem offenen Meer.

      Ab jetzt werden wir wieder langsam Richtung Süden nach Perth fahren. Wir haben eine Woche Zeit, um die 750km zu fahren, also ganz entspannt. Mal sehen ob wir noch ein paar neuen schöne Ecken entdecken werden, ansonsten genießen wir die letzte Woche unserer langen Reise. Am 11.06 fliegen wir zurück nach Deutschland.      Read more

      Around Shark Bay

      After a more leisurely start to the morning in our cool (in both senses of the word) cabin, we spent the day exploring the Denham/Shark Bay area more. We went to "Little Lagoon" and had a paddle in the shallow waters there and Solana and I enjoyed making a shell picture on the beach, whilst Laura searched unsuccessfully for lizards in the sand dunes. We did see some beautiful little fairy wren birds as we drove away but they were too quick to get a decent photo. More photogenic were the big emus we saw crossing the road on our way back to the town! We visited Ocean Park, formerly a pink snapper (tasty local fish) farm but now an aquarium housing some of the native species of fish and a couple of marine reptiles from the Shark Bay area. Most of the fish were in large open tanks, which was good to see and also meant that we got some good views of the marine life, including stonefish, lionfish, sharks, a couple of turtles awaiting rehabilitation to the wild and some sea snakes. Many of the species are highly venomous too. We were shown around by a marine biologist and learnt some really interesting facts about the animals we saw too. We stayed for a tasty lunch overlooking the bay, then headed back into town. We have left our own snorkels and masks at home due to lack of space, so we bought a cheap one here and, putting thoughts of all the venomous sea creatures to one side, we did some snorkelling off the jetty this afternoon. Although not the best snorkelling in the world, we did see a few species of fish and some beautiful rays that were lovely to watch. Afterwards we enjoyed a sundowner beer, watching the sunset from the rocks along the shore - a lovely way to end the day.Read more

      Drommond Cove - Denham

      Heute erlebten wir die grossen Distanzen hautnah, bei Temperaturen bis 34 Grad und starkem Wind. Dana hatte das Steuer zum Glück fest im Griff. Erste Station war der Pink Lake, ein Salzsee. Das Wasser war sehr warm und mega salzig.
      Bei einem kurzen Abstecher nach Port Gregory konnten wir gerade zuschauen, wie zwei Fischer ihren Fang, kistenweise Langusten, in den Kühllastwagen verluden.
      Weiter ging's zu den tollen Klippen vor Kalbarri und ganz kurz nach Kalbarri selbst. Schon ging die Fahrt weiter bis nach Denham, wo wir kurz vor Sonnenuntergang ankamen.      Read more

      Boat trip to Dirk Hartog Island

      On the boat out to Dirk Hartog Island at 8am. 12 people, skipper and his offsider. Perfect weather. What a place, too special to describe. Water amazing, flat calm, looking forward to our adventure.
      Hopped into 4WD vehicle with ‘offsider Jono at the wheel’. WOW what a trip to Shark Bay over sand dunes on very rough terrain, Adrenalin pumping!!!
      The bay had hundreds of baby shark (lemon fish) only about 2 metres from the shore, such an amazing sight with beautiful clear water. Then on to the blow hole, again WOW, 45 metre cliff with the water spout reaching another 30 to 40 metres. Our two guides said it was three years since they had seen it like this.
      Back to the old homestead for scones, jam and cream before the 50 min boat trip back. Surely it can’t get get better than this. BUT we saw dolphins, turtles and three Dugong’s and their calves, so special. Off boat, then to the Ocean Aquarian, informative.
      Calamari dinner, now bed, knackered.      Read more

      Kalbarri to Denham

      Left our wonderful accommodation yesterday morning for the nearly 380km trip to Denham. Stopped for fuel and lunch at Billabong. Weird to say the least, out in the middle of nowhere two gas stations/ roadhouse next to one another, one with fuel 5 cents dearer than the other, a ‘no brainer’. Best thing was a group of motorcyclists, all women, sat and had lunch in among them, what a hoot. A great bunch of ladies🥴🥴🥴having a long weekend break.
      Then on to see the Stromatolites, very interesting going back about 3000 years. Called in to Shell beach, not one grain of sand, all very small shells. Funny that.
      Then to Denham, accommodation across the road from the beach.      Read more
