      mir hend eigentli vor nuch ei nacht anerä tankstell, wo gratis isch, z schlafä, aber will mir so fruäh los sind hemmer gnuäg ziit zum bis ganz ufä fahrä. ufem ufä weg gümmer nu an shell beach. dr sandstrand bestaht us unzähligä, chlinä wisämuschlä. hammer nu niä en strand nur us muschlä gseh😍

      üseri erst nacht verbringed mir in monkey mia. der ort isch bekannt für sini delfin.
      es isch jedoch chlei wiedersprüchig. d delfin da wärded gfuätteret und me chan das de gu luägä.
      fruähner hend d fischer, d fischrestä is wasser gworfä, wo d delfin aglockt het.
      und hüt wird das eifach nu witergfuährt, aber mit rangers.
      mir sind üs nunig ganz sicher eb mir das würgli wend gu luägä. dr ort selber isch aber au so sehr schü. überall hets emus und z wasser isch absolut klar.
      mir entscheided üs für en strandspaziergang und siehe da mir gsehnd zwei delfinmamis mit ihrnä jungä. es gseht so us as würeds gad unterricht gi, wiä asmä jagt. hammer si sind mega nach und so erübrigt sich das au gad mitem gu luägä wes delfin fuättered. mir hends mega nachgseh und de nu zwei chlini.

      Shark Bay

      Das nächste Peninsula (Halbinsel) Shark Bay stand an.
      Nach einem Besuch beim Shell Beach, der aus einer bis zu 10 Meter dicken Schicht aus Milliarden von Muscheln besteht, gings in den Francois Peron Nationalpark. Der Reifendruck musste auf 18 psi heruntergelassen werden, da die Strassen dort lediglich aus Sand bestehen. Der Weg zum Campground gestaltete sich als sehr bumpig. Doch es erwartete uns eine ruhige Bucht wo das türkis farbene Wasser auf roten Sand trifft. Währenddem Marco ein Kolossuem aus Steinen baute, sammelte ich Muscheln und Korallen.
      Auf dem Rückweg stoppten wir bei Monkey Mia, wo wir Delfine sowie eine Schildkröte sehr nah am Ufer sahen.      Read more

      Biology lesson

      We travel with a 2-berth van but an early morning inspection proved that it can easily accommodate 200 bush flies on top of that. Most of them were still a bit sleepy when we found them on the side of the van, seemingly disappointed they hadn't been able to find a way in during the night to suck on our skin. We were terrorized during breakfast to the extent that we decided to brush our teeth while driving and make a quick stop further up the road to finish up.

      Today we were going to the beach town of Denham in the Shark Bay area. It was around 300km driving from our free campsite. The area is probably mainly known because of the 'wild' dolphins at Monkey Mia which are being fed every morning. We thought that didn't sound too wildlife friendly and since we had already seen wild dolphins in natural setting in New Zealand, we decided to skip this. Nonetheless we felt it could be worth the detour to see Shell Beach, Hamelin Pool and some nice coast line.

      The driving here is by the way quite different to anything we have experienced so far. Roads are straight as far as you can see, always surrounded by red sand and bushland that never seems to end. Once in awhile there is a goat, emu, kangoroo or bird showing its face or lying dead on or besides the street. And every 100km or so there is a roadhouse coming up, often with petrol station. While that's of course commonly known about Australia, it is still a different thing to experience yourself. For now we still very much enjoy it.

      The first stop was Hamelin Pool, which is a Marine Nature Reserve where stromalites can be seen. These are rock-looking bacteria and the earliest signs of life on earth, as far as billions of years ago. It was cool to walk around there and learn a bit about them. Most were in calm, undeep water when we got there, and we could see some fish "floating in the air" swimming around the stromalites. We had another stop at a viewpoint over the sea, where it was interesting to see Australian red outback sand mixing with white beach sand.

      We arrived early at out campsite in Denham, which was needed as it was also washing day. After a late lunch we originally wanted to check out the local beach for swimming as it was warm weather and a coastal town but we both didn't feel too well and decided to take it easy. Instead we baked some improvised spinach-tomato-paprika-feta dough pieces and had a healthy tasty dinner.      Read more

      Denham Tasman Camping (12.Nacht)

      Heute sind wir etwas länger liegengeblieben und fuhren erst um 9.00h weiter. Florian wollte vorher noch schnorcheln, doch leider fand er weder Fische noch Korallen. Wir fuhren zu der Big Lagoon, das war sehr eindrücklich zu sehen. Wir wärmten noch einige Resten auf und hatten dabei eine wunderbare Aussicht auf die Big Lagoon. Danach fuhren wir bis zum Ende des Parks, wo wir unser Reifendruck wieder erhöhten. Zur small Lagoon fuhren wir auch noch kurz, diese befindet sich ausserhalb des Nationalparks und ist auch für 2WD Autos gut befahrbar. Erstaunlicherweise ist hier sogar Beachdriving in der einen Richtung für 4WD Fahrzeuge erlaubt, dies haben wir aber nicht gemacht, da unsere Vermietung dies mit unserem Camper nicht erlaubt. Danach tankten wir in Denham und fuhren zum Tasman Holiday Camping, wo wir einen wunderschönen Stellplatz mit Meerblick haben.Read more

      Around Shark Bay

      After a more leisurely start to the morning in our cool (in both senses of the word) cabin, we spent the day exploring the Denham/Shark Bay area more. We went to "Little Lagoon" and had a paddle in the shallow waters there and Solana and I enjoyed making a shell picture on the beach, whilst Laura searched unsuccessfully for lizards in the sand dunes. We did see some beautiful little fairy wren birds as we drove away but they were too quick to get a decent photo. More photogenic were the big emus we saw crossing the road on our way back to the town! We visited Ocean Park, formerly a pink snapper (tasty local fish) farm but now an aquarium housing some of the native species of fish and a couple of marine reptiles from the Shark Bay area. Most of the fish were in large open tanks, which was good to see and also meant that we got some good views of the marine life, including stonefish, lionfish, sharks, a couple of turtles awaiting rehabilitation to the wild and some sea snakes. Many of the species are highly venomous too. We were shown around by a marine biologist and learnt some really interesting facts about the animals we saw too. We stayed for a tasty lunch overlooking the bay, then headed back into town. We have left our own snorkels and masks at home due to lack of space, so we bought a cheap one here and, putting thoughts of all the venomous sea creatures to one side, we did some snorkelling off the jetty this afternoon. Although not the best snorkelling in the world, we did see a few species of fish and some beautiful rays that were lovely to watch. Afterwards we enjoyed a sundowner beer, watching the sunset from the rocks along the shore - a lovely way to end the day.Read more

      Kängurus so weit das Auge reicht

      Wir sind bereits wieder auf dem Rückweg nach Perth. Gestern haben wir nochmals in Carnarvon übernachtet und haben am Nachmittag die Blowholes und den Miaboolya Beach besucht. Die Blowholes waren sehr eindrücklich und einen Besuch wert, der Strand eher weniger. Der Weg dorthin war extrem holprig, da die Strasse aus Sand und Gestein war. Der Strand selber überzeugte uns nach Coral Bay überhaupt nicht, das einzige was uns ein bisschen Eindruck machte war die Weite des Sandstrands.
      Heute morgen starteten wir wieder früh mit dem Ziel Shark Bay. Unterwegs hatten wir eine Kollision mit einem Känguru, wobei wir unser Ersatzrad verloren. Zum Glück konnte Papi den Schaden schnell reparieren, sodass wir kurze Zeit später wieder auf der Strasse waren. Der erste Stopp führte uns zum Hamelin Pool, zu den Stromaliten. Dort sahen wir auch mehrere Kängurus, eines davon konnte ich sogar fotografieren. Das zweite Mal hielten wir beim Shell Beach an. Der Strand glänzt mit dem weissen Sand und dem türkisblauen Wasser. Der weisse Sand besteht aber nicht aus Sand, sondern aus vielen kleinen weissen Muscheln. Das letzte Mal vor Denham legten wir eine Pause ein beim Eagle Bay. Von diesem Aussichtspunkt aus sahen wir Haie, Rochen und Schildkröten.
      Leider ist auch Denham ausgestorben und viele Restaurants geschlossen. Man merkt wieder einmal, dass hier die Saison bereits vorbei ist. Dafür haben wir auf dem Campingplatz umso mehr Platz und bekamen sogar einen Abstellplatz direkt am Meer.      Read more

      Kalbarri to Denham

      Left our wonderful accommodation yesterday morning for the nearly 380km trip to Denham. Stopped for fuel and lunch at Billabong. Weird to say the least, out in the middle of nowhere two gas stations/ roadhouse next to one another, one with fuel 5 cents dearer than the other, a ‘no brainer’. Best thing was a group of motorcyclists, all women, sat and had lunch in among them, what a hoot. A great bunch of ladies🥴🥴🥴having a long weekend break.
      Then on to see the Stromatolites, very interesting going back about 3000 years. Called in to Shell beach, not one grain of sand, all very small shells. Funny that.
      Then to Denham, accommodation across the road from the beach.      Read more

      Boat trip to Dirk Hartog Island

      On the boat out to Dirk Hartog Island at 8am. 12 people, skipper and his offsider. Perfect weather. What a place, too special to describe. Water amazing, flat calm, looking forward to our adventure.
      Hopped into 4WD vehicle with ‘offsider Jono at the wheel’. WOW what a trip to Shark Bay over sand dunes on very rough terrain, Adrenalin pumping!!!
      The bay had hundreds of baby shark (lemon fish) only about 2 metres from the shore, such an amazing sight with beautiful clear water. Then on to the blow hole, again WOW, 45 metre cliff with the water spout reaching another 30 to 40 metres. Our two guides said it was three years since they had seen it like this.
      Back to the old homestead for scones, jam and cream before the 50 min boat trip back. Surely it can’t get get better than this. BUT we saw dolphins, turtles and three Dugong’s and their calves, so special. Off boat, then to the Ocean Aquarian, informative.
