      Barossa Valley

      January 25 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

      Greenock

      September 22, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Following the Barossa Heritage Tourist Drive we left Greenock and headed for Nurioopta, Angaston, Tanunda and Seppeltsfield. We visited Mengler's Hill Lookout which we had been to the last time we were here in 2001 for our 25th wedding anniversary. We also tried to find the little cottage B&B that we stayed in last time but the memory was a bit hazy and the wind was too cold to wander around too much. It was lovely to revisit some of the same places.
A must visit from Faye's bucket list was Maggie Beer's Farm Shop. Coffee and treats were on the menu as we explored the farm and the shop. Faye was excited to see the actual kitchen that was featured in The Cook and the Chef TV show that she has enjoyed for so many years. The obligatory photo opportunity was taken. Unfortunately Maggie was not there but it was special anyway.
Back to Greenock for the night as we rugged up against the freezing winds.

      Barossa Valley

      April 6, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

      Wein, Wein, Wein

      Barossa Valley Tag2

      October 29, 2018 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

    • Day 44

      Greenock, South Australia

      September 21, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

On the way to the Barossa Valley we passed through a few small towns one of which was Owen. They have a huge silo painting over 6 separate silos. Most impressive.
The weather was still not being kind to us with the wind blowing and the temperature dropping. We camped at the Greenock Centenary Park which was a pleasant area around a cricket oval. While it was nice to have a green outlook for a change the wind drove us inside the van for most of the afternoon. We finally braved it for a quick walk around the small historic town before bunkering down for the night.Read more

      Barossa Valley

      April 25, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Loved the Barossa! Stayed 5 nights at Greenock Centenary Park $5 pn. Top spot adjacent to a beaut cricket ground under huge pine trees. Had to get the Genny out eventually as the trees provided so much shade the solar panels couldn't catch any sun.

Checked out the Whispering Wall, a 140m arch dam that has incredible acoustic properties. Marg and I could have normal volume conversations from one end to the other which we captured on video to great effect. Called in to Maggie Beer's Farm Shop where Marg stocked up on Quince paste, Cabernet paste and Dukkah which proved to be a great accompaniment to the many bottles of Barossa Shiraz we sampled in the region.

Visited heaps of wineries in the area and thankfully the liver survived the onslaught! Chateau Tanunda is known as the biggest and oldest in the Barossa and it didn't disappoint...although the wine itself was a bit ordinary. Loved Seppeltsfield, Rockford, Murray Street, Peter Lehmann, Jacobs Creek and a small wine producer called JB Winery.

      Bloody cold! 5-18°

      Bungaree Station

      January 16 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 34 °C

We spent a hot, but very enjoyable afternoon exploring Bungaree Station. Clare Valley. What a pleasure to be able to wander around this magnificent property. The audio post scattered around gave a fascinating insight to life on the property.

The story of Bungaree Station begins on Christmas Day 1841, when our ancestor, George C Hawker and his brothers, James and Charles, selected this as the site for their "head station". They had purchased 2000 ewes from NSW, and on advice of the explorer, Edward John Eyre, went looking for sufficient good land along the Hutt River. They found "good drinkable water at a depth of 8 feet and plenty of it" and named the property “Bungaree”, after the aboriginal name for the area.

Bungaree became the headquarters of one of Australia’s most successful sheep flocks, running 100,000 merino sheep at a time when the country was said to "ride on the sheep’s back". With over 50 staff and their families living on the property, Bungaree soon resembled a small village, with its own Store, School, District Council Chambers, Blacksmith Shop and Church, as well as the Woolshed, Shearers Quarters, Homestead, Manager's House and other staff cottages.
The property remains the home of the 4th, 5th and 6th generations of the Hawker family. George and Sally Hawker have handed over the reins for the day-to-day management of the farming activities to their son Edward, while their daughter Vicky manages the hospitality business with her husband Mark Stewart.

      Greenock

      January 17 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Just an overnight stop. Had a parcel sent here to pick up. The owner of the Post Office is from Brisbane. Moved here last year.

Very pretty little town...I remembered to take my phone when we walked up the the post office. So I have photos( unlike our last camp) Much cooler today. Have my flannelette shirt on. Crazy weather.

Camped at the local oval here. Not very flat, but a nice outlook.
