      Murray River

      January 11, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 37 °C

      Drive to Burra

      July 3, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Long day today and a bit of a slow start with a sleep in and morning run along the Murrumbidgee. Stopped for lunch by Lake Benanee and in Paringa to see some silo art but otherwise it was mostly a day of driving. Staying at Bon Accord Hotel in Burra - free camping when you eat at the hotel.Read more

Day 5: Over the border to SA

      April 11, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Early start for a big day with the aim to cross the SA border and stop in Renmark, approx 600km of shared driving, but with the option to stop off and head in the next morning - let’s see how we go

Felt a little weird to pack up and not head home but instead onto somewhere new, but definitely a good weird 😜

Couple of stops along the way.
First morning tea at Lake Reedy RV rest stop, would be a great spot for a couple of nights.
Next Hattah Roadhouse, only to discover Google Maps was having a bad day and it was actually Wemen Cafe- not a recommended stop for food, coffee or the loo, but not bad for a picnic under the shade of the trees.
Then Hattah Roadhouse for real where the loos where much better 😜. There was the option of staying with shower and toilets available, but we made the decision to keep on keeping on as we hadn’t had enough of the flat scenery and endless roads of nothing 😜

So over the border, which we nearly missed (the sign that is), through the quarantine check, over the bridge, through Renmark and on to Plush’s Bend- our home off grid for the next 2 nights.

And as SA is 1/2 hour behind, we made it just in time to set up before the sun set

      Melbourne to Renmark

      June 23, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

TOP END TRIP - MELBOURNE TO RENMARK

      The journey begins…..
We finally made our escape from Melbourne on 22/6/21. Our first stop was Campbells Creek where we spent an enjoyable night with the Gissings, camping in their driveway. The next day we headed off to St. Arnaud, driving in the rain most of the way and set up camp there for the night. From St. Arnaud we headed off next morning to hit the silo art trail around the Wimmera/Mallee area. Our first stop was Rupanyup where the silos were painted in black and white portraits of two local youngsters in their sporting gear, then off we drove to Murtoa to have a look at the heritage listed Stick Shed which is a really impressive structure. The huge corrugated iron shed was built during WWII to store grain and is as big as 5 Olympic sized swimming pools and has 560 tall poles, some almost 20 metres high holding up its enormous roof. It’s a bit like an enormous cathedral inside and to think it only took four months to build back in 1941 proves how hard they must have worked. It was used to store grain until 1989. Next we headed north to Sheep Hills where the silos were painted very colourfully with portraits of four indigenous locals. Off we travelled past the Brim silos with their sepia portraits of four local farmers and on to Roseberry which also had sepia artworks of two locals.
After spending a night in Hopetoun we travelled on to see the Lascelles silos which were again painted in sepia style of local identities. The next town we headed to was Nullawil where the beautiful artwork depicted a black and tan working Kelpie dog and his master. This was my favourite as not only was it really detailed but the dog looked just like our old Kelpie, Dexter. Our next stop was Sea Lake where the immense artwork reflects the pink and orange colours of the nearby Lake Tyrrell sunsets. This one showed a young indigenous girl on a swing. Our final stop was at Patchewollock to see the local farmer nicknamed “Noodle” painted on the silos. Each of the sites was unique and well worth going out of our way to see. We spent the night at Ouyen caravan park.
On the morning of 26th June we set off towards the South Australia border and after stopping to dispose of (and eat) any fruit we were carrying we entered the fruit fly exclusion zone and the S.A. border. We had applied for and been granted our Covid border passes so when we stopped at the border checkpoint it was a relatively easy process and we didn’t even have to show proof of our access pass and found that there isn’t even a requirement to be Covid tested when entering now. We drove on to Renmark and checked in to the caravan park next to the Murray River.

      Day 6: Exploring Renmark

      April 12, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Woke early to witness a beautiful sunrise over the river, wasn’t disappointed

Received lots of recommendations for ways to spend the day, most involving alcohol 😳

First we walked along the riverfront and played in the water fountain getting very wet, then onto Murtho Forest and the Headings Cliff Lookout with the most spectacular views of the river below.
Walked the Peringa Paddacks track within the Murray River National Park, would have done the Goat Island loop but had to get to the Distillery before it closed for a gin and beer tasting.

And given both the Brewery and the Historic Pub were closed on Tuesdays, what set out to be a boozy day ended quite sedately, at least for one of us 😜

      Renmark SA

      March 25, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Three states in one day - NSW, VIC and SA!

We cruised through Hay, Balranald (where we stopped for lunch by the
Murrumbidgee River) and Mildura, passed inspection at the SA Quarantine Checkpoint, then onto Renmark for the night, where we stayed at the magnificent BIG4 Riverfront Caravan Park. Dusk overlooking the river was magic.

We will definitely remember Renmark for the nail-bitingly narrow bridge into town. With a total width allowance of just 3m, there’s not much wiggle room either side for the caravan. I’m proud to say our driver handled it like a pro.

Dinner at Club Renmark was also spectacular overlooking the mighty Murray River. Interesting to hear the December 2022 flood peaked at just below the height of the balcony where we were dining, which itself is about 4-5 meters above normal river level.

Morning coffee and a quick dip of our toes in the Murray River and we’re off again towards Port Augusta.

Renmark and the Dinghy Derby Races

      February 7, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We arrived in Renmark late Friday afternoon, pumped about the Dinghy Derby Races on Sunday. As we rolled into town, Brax spots a massive BMX track! We can’t say no to letting the boys have a go, so we pull up and and grab the bikes off.

On Saturday we explore the town and find out the best spot to set up camp and watch the Dingy Derby races. We got a beautiful location on the Murray and set ourselves up there for the next few days.

The Derby Race did not disappoint on Sunday, the boats came flying past our riverside camp spot at speed. I was in charge of taking some action shots on the camera, Brett was in charge of flying the drone, unfortunately he flew it straight into a tree and then it fell in the river 😱! Needless to say we need a new drone!

After the race was over the boys (and Lyla) were keen to have a run through of the race track in their tinny, so down came the boat.

On Monday, Brett took the boys and I into town via boat, the scenery is stunning along the Murray.

We finished up the day by filling up the water tanks and playing our favourite camping game ‘whose poo is it ?’ 😂😂 ( Aunty Kat hates this game, you can’t even mention it to her without her gagging ) .

On to the next stop, where will it be.......
