      Hallstatt

      September 24, 2015 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Another really cloudy day for our first full day in the mountains. Undaunted we set forth on a day trip to Hallstatt, another tiny town on another lake, Hallstatter See. We first caught a bus to Bad Ischl - sort of mid way between the two lakes and then a train to the Hallstatt Bahnhoff (train station) which was very conveniently on the wrong side of the lake. So then we had a short boat ride to finish the journey.

The journey itself was quite fun and Hallstatt was worth the time and effort as well, so it was a win. This place has been around for a long time and its claim to fame is a salt mine. It is hard to get a grip on just how important salt was back in the day. The salt mine is still there and is the major tourist draw card. We didn't go the the mine, but they had a small museum which was really interesting. Lately the place has grown to have great archaeological interest. The place has been going for so long and there is so much salt spread around the place that they are finding artifacts in a very well preserved condition. A couple of hours was plenty to see what there was to see. You can tell my fascination with the layer of cloud that had formed around the lake at just a certain altitude.

      Hallstatt

      September 27, 2021 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

What a beautiful place. Hallstatt rightly is a UNESCO site. It is located on an Alpine lake at the foot of a mountain below a salt mine. Yes, this is still in the Salzburg principality with salt as the primary business and source of wealth. So it was under the rule of the Salzburg prince-archbishops (see the several Salzburg posts).
The 1st picture is of Salzburg taken from the lake. The train station is on the other side with a ferry connection to the town. The 2nd and 3rd pictures look along the lake. Number 2 was in the morning, and 3 was taken in the afternoon. Weather changes in the Alps and dramatically affects the scenery.
The 4th and 5th pictures look at how the town built up the mountainside. There is only a narrow strip along the lake. So going uphill was the only choice. The 4th picture picks up a small waterfall, right in the center.
The last picture is a look at some of the waterfront buildings.

      Halstatt

      October 10, 2017 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

The rain disappeared today, so we drove for an hour alongside a couple of the lakes to visit the beautiful lakeside village of Halstatt.

Very picturesque to say the least. The water is crystal clear up close and I assume only looks black from the shores because it is so deep - we could see that it dropped away quickly. There were a large number of swans in the village vicinity and obviously accustomed to being fed because they got quite nasty if you go up close and didn't have any food for them.

We also walked through the cemetery of the church on the hill, and it has to be the most beautiful cemetery ever! The plots were tiny, each one was well cared for, covered in flowers or ornamental shrubs and unique - gorgeous.

      Die Taufe

      June 23, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

    • Tag 4 - Hallstatt, Gosausee & Gosau

      July 29, 2020 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Read more

      Hallstatt, Austria

      September 19, 2015 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

We took a very early train at 6:12am to Hallstatt via Attnang-Puchheim. We had breakfast of coffee rolls in the Attnang-Puchheim train station. The train was very user-friendly and easy to navigate. Upon arriving in Hallstatt, the ferry dock was a stone's throw from the train station and departs shortly after each scheduled train arrival. We had purchased the Kombiticket from OBB which included the train journeys x2, ferry rides x2 and visit to the salt mines. It took 5 minutes to get to the dock in Hallstatt and we arrived around 9am. There were barely any tourists there yet and it was lovely to explore the quiet narrow streets in peace. We walked around the upper streets towards the salt mines. The whole city is built into the mountain sides which was so interesting to see.

The salt mine tour with cable car was great. It was a tad foggy/drizzly but it cleared up and stayed cool and dry. At the salt mine, we had to put on protective clothing. We took two slides down and it was super fun! At the second slide, a photo was taken of us on the slide down and we purchased it for 5 euro! Some of the light shows on the tour were kind of cheesy but overall it was a lot of fun. We bought some flavored salts as souvenirs for many people at home.

Back on solid ground, we took more photos through the lower part of Hallstatt's streets and had lunch at Bacht's Polreich where we both had beer-battered pike perch which was caught in Lake Hallstatt. We were lucky enough to get outdoor seating looking out over Lake Hallstatt! We then rented a boat for 16 euro and got two beers to enjoy out on the water. It was very fun even though it was cool and cloudy.

We took the ferry back and caught a 4:32pm train back to Salzburg. Dinner was at Barewirt again. Myron was jealous of my pumpkin cordon bleu so he got that and I got fried chicken and potato salad. We were both very tired and I wasn't feeling well after eating so much fried food!
