      Von Wiener Melange und Kaiserschmarrn

      6 июня 2023 г., Австрия ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

      Unsere Genusstipps:

      Vienna, Austria

      9 августа 2022 г., Австрия ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Vienna in a quick blink! Our train ran a bit behind, so our arrival was later than expected. We had to hustle to see the sights before things closed.

We will be back to Austria for longer another time, but for this trip we booked it over to the Schonbrunn Palace to get lost in the garden labrynth mazes. The girls ran ahead of us giggling with such excitement as they ran through the mazes. We also played on the Labyrinth Playground which was super unique. The creativity in designing this playground included a large metal bird you could sit inside, a mirror maze, climbing ropes and more.

Everything was closing, so we decided to surprise the girls by taking them to do something really American. We ate Burger King and went to the movies! Mabel had fallen asleep in our travel towards the cinema, so we moved slow. That only left us with enough time to feed the kids something quick and close. Once they figured out what was happening, the big girls could not stop smiling. They kept saying "thank you" over and over again. Sweet girls! They giggled so much through the movie and were still so grateful as we walked home. Fun family night!

      Vienne

      19 августа 2022 г., Австрия ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

      9 сентября 2022 г., Австрия ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

      Vienna, Austria

      6 мая, Австрия ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We left Zagreb on a Tuesday after a visit to the Museum of Broken Relationships – a small gallery where people donate the remnants of their past relationships, along with a sad or funny story. Everett was not amused by an activity about failed love.

We opted for the bus instead of train to Graz, Austria (the direct train was a 7am departure which wasn’t appealing). Crossing the border into Slovenia was quick and easy. Slovenia, we should have stopped for a few days! What a miss. We drove through the eastern part of the country for an hour or so and then arrived at the bus station in Graz. The station was on the edge of town, and as we attempted to figure out transportation to our hotel, a Croatian passenger gave us a free ride in her Uber, saving us a 30 min bus ride. Happy with our luck and new location, we chowed on Turkish doner kebabs (they were on every corner). Our accommodation was an amusing hostel on the “wrong side of the tracks.” (It was actually a cute place but literally behind the train station). We loved the historic downtown and of course had to stock up at the Manner store (hazelnut wafers).

Our fun idea: “5-day wiener schnitzel challenge:” eat breaded meat for five days in a row and rate the winner. Ken was absolutely buzzing at the idea: pork, veal, chicken… which would he choose? What sides … potato salad… There was a lot to discuss.

Graz, you were gorgeous and completely under-rated.

Three hours went by too quickly, as train trips usually do. The countryside provided wonderful views enroute to Vienna. (Sidenote, we are purposefully going to new cities – meaning we have not visited before. The only exceptions so far have been Bangkok and now Vienna. We just had to make an exception, it’s a favorite European capital city).

Everett’s first impression, “Are we in London?”

The Vienna metro system was abundant and we easily navigated to find our “platz.” Just as we arrived at our station the rain came down hard. It was difficult to find our apartment and we became drenched. We stayed on a beautiful local plaza just a short train ride from downtown – the location turned out to be a perfect one.

It had been twelve years since our last visit, but the city didn’t seem as Austrian as we remember it. The city has become much more multicultural with more foreigners – for example, there were both Arab and Somali markets on our block.

We went to Figlmuller for a nostalgic visit: we were there to appreciate the wiener schnitzel. The line was out the door and around the corner as hundreds of people queued in the rain. Luckily, we had reservations and skipped the line. Ken pulled up a picture on his phone from twelve years ago and told the waiter, “I’ll have this again.” We all agreed Figlmuller was the Undisputed Champion of the Five-Day Schnitzel Challenge. A second visit was in order the next day.

We found Ken’s grandma’s childhood home (now used as a school) and enjoyed the park near her house. We walked in the rain all day, but didn’t care in the least. Ken, on his new running kick, had been waiting months to buy specific shoes and he finally was able to find Zero running shoes. Vienna had everything you could ever need.

We wandered the historic downtown streets and pretended we lived there – all the while feeling the romantic nostalgia of the past. Unexpectedly, we stumbled upon a huge festival called “Wings for Life,” a charity running event to find a cure for spinal cord injury.

Vienna, there is no other in comparison to you: You were a shining star, around every corner a more magnificent building than the last. Not one single tout tried to bother us. No one stared. Everyone just let us be - such a nice feeling. If it wasn’t so expensive, we could stay forever. Five days in Austria and it just wasn’t enough.

      Tour Day 8 - Bratislava & Vienna

      16 июля 2023 г., Австрия ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Today we woke up and left Budapest. We drove to Bratislava for a lunch break and wander around the town. The old town was small but cute. We ended up grabbing a burger and a beer, Marlene and Paul came over and grabbed a beer while we ate. The strangest thing in the town was the UFO tower on top of the bridge which the Soviets made which is now a restaurant. Closely rivalled by a statue of a man peeping out of a manhole which our tour guide Kristzi described in a much more creepy manor (judge for yourself).
We continued on to Vienna which was only a short drive away. We checked in and then met our local guide for a driving/walking tour of the city. We welcomed Walter the walking red flag, as white and ancient as tour guides come. Initially he was cracking a few jokes and explaining about the great public housing system they have in Vienna, and I was hopeful my initial thoughts were wrong. However, when a joke was made regarding a queen having a miscarriage as an 'easy way out' and a comment about seeing Adele on TV before she lost the weight and her being not attractive, I knew it was going to be a long tour.
The city had so many elegant buildings, from palaces, museums and even the parliament. The first place we walked around was a church, however there was a festival going on and there were strong sounds of Olivia Rodrigo coming from the area... Turns out there was a choir singing pop hits. Unholy by Sam Smith was a risky choice but About Damn Time by Lizzo was a personal favourite.
We then walked to main areas like the parliament, palace, through a rose garden and came out in the main centre of town. All with Walter's sexist and interesting commentary. It was also very hot so the group were struggling with the heat. Our guide Kristzi was getting slightly annoyed with the complaints which was funny to see. We ended up in an old storage cellar for a traditional Austrian meal. Unfortunately for us, we were last to arrive so had little say in where we sat. We were with 2 South African ladies, who were a little patronizing regarding our ability to travel the world at such a young age and used any conversation as a way to speak about South Africa. The schnitzel was nice though.
The other interesting thing about the restaurant was that the waitstaff were the most stressed individuals we've ever seen. Kristzi had warned us about 'Austrian' effeciency of waitstaff and how they try and get you in and our very quickly. Seeing it in action was a different story, we watched Lukas the waiter chug glasses of water while running to tables. We've heard he refused to get people drinks as he was too overwhelmed and busy. Erin and I made sure to stack our plates so he could quickly retrieve them. Honestly that man may have an ulcer.
Next we wandered around Vienna and went to a rooftop bar that was suggested by my friend. It was an eventful time. First we went up in the elevator with others and none of us got off the right floor, so we went back to the ground floor... Finally we got off at the top and walked up stairs to a beautiful bar in the middle of Vienna. We watched the sunset and the views were stunning. I then made a mistake of pointing at a glass belonging to an interesting and creepy guy who approached us, begging us to stay multiple times. Luckily we were saved by our waiter... (Please ask for more detail in person, I attempted to write the story but it was too cringe to retell). We then finished the night at an Australian bar which wasn't too over the top actually. Then we met with our tour group who had returned from the classical concert which majority seemed to enjoy. It was a big day but we really got an experience of Vienna!

Читать далее

      Our trip from Vienna

      26 октября 2023 г., Австрия ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

So here's the story, no, saga, of our trip from Vienna to Freiburg via Frankfurt. On Wednesday afternoon we were to take a fast train from Vienna to Frankfurt. Once there we were to pick up a rental car, stay the night, and then get an early start for Freiburg. We hadn't reserved seats and when we got on the train people were sitting in the aisles. Since it's a 5.5h trip we didn't want to join them. (As we found out later there were seats amongst all the full seats and the aisle-sitters actually preferred to "slum it".) The tickets were good for the next train only so we stepped off and hoped to have better luck on the 2nd train. Come to find out there was no 2nd train! Long story short we had to buy 1st class tickets to get reserved seats on the last train of the day, which turned out to be painfully expensive 😱😭.

When we got into F'furt at 00:30am and walked out of the station it felt a bit like a third world country! Multi-culti, bustling, and noisy. Turns out that F'furt is a hub for travellers, both those of some means like us, and also for the multitude of backpack wearing, hostel-staying vagabonds. Warily we walked the few blocks to our hotel, which was very clean and snug, showered up and conked out.

Next morning we awaken at 10:30, not having set an alarm (duh). We were supposed to pick up the rental across from the station at 8am and so I sez "Oh shit I hope they still have a car!". We throw on our clothes and as Beth finishes packing I hoof it to the rental agency. After much discussion of "no we can't find your reservation", "Yes I called yesterday" to "well you must have called the hot line" (meaning what exactly?) to "here's my confirmation email so there!" we got our car. All smiles and "danke schoens" all 'round in the end☺️. Hit the road for Freiburg, not having a bite to eat until 1pm.

The car is a Opel hatchback, like a VW Golf in size. Stick shift too (whee!). A dog around town but amazingly it's geared for the highway and does quite well for itself there.

No pics of F'furt so I'll leave you with one of our special friends. 🛸

Next up, Tommy's first experience on the famed German autobahnen 😎
