I feel bad. The man with dog panhandling from the other night is actually blind. A lady came to fetch him, but a woman with a small daughter asked him about his other dog, and he pulled out the smallest chihuahua, one month old, out of his purse. Made my day. I gave him ten pesos. 😊 - BassamMeer informatie

  • Taqueria Lunch

    15 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

I took Yelapa to this street taqueria literally 2 blocks from Casa Fantasia. Oh what good tacos. Had the El Pastor, lengua, and asada. The lady makes the tortillas right there in front of you. There are benches to sit around the cart and a small one to the side. The owner brought a chair for Yelapa. I tried very tiny morsels of meat, she inhaled them. She was so happy. A few small portions of taco soaked in the meat juice, she loved. I tried to sneak in a small bean or two with the meat, she ate the meat and spit out the bean. She definitely is a meat lover - BassamMeer informatie

  • Playa Los Arcos

    15 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

He took me for a walk in the evening. He talks funny. Most of the time I don't get what he's saying, except when he calls me "bonita", I like that. Occasionally he will say "ven aquí" so I go to him. I am starting to like him, he is kind to me. He has been taking me to the beach many times a day to walk in the sand and on the wet edge where the waves break. I miss my beach, and the jungle that starts where the beach ends. Funny, he keeps calling the name of my beach when he wants my attention, just like the Fernandez' did when I was staying with them. I guess that will be my name, Yelapa, Yelapa they call me. That's where I first saw them, He and the two ladies with him. I still don't know what he's got planned for me, but for some reason I don't care. I have a feeling it will be good. - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Loncheria y cocina económica

    15 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

After our walk on the beach He buys some ham and cheese to take back to the hotel. We place the goodies in our little fridge in our room and we leave right away. We go back towards the tacos cart where we ate earlier in the day. Aha, he takes me this time to this authentic Mexican eatery across the street from the tacos that I loved. The lady says "perro, si", phew i can go in with him. The menu is on the wall, I can pick up bits and pieces since he's using the little Spanish he knows. I hear "mole, frijoles, arroz, melone". He has good taste, and he loves our foods. We go out on the tiny tiny courtyard they have. I sit on the chair next to him. He eats, he seems to really like it, he gets his fingers all stained with mole as he is spooning it into hot corn tortillas. He gives me a couple tiny pieces of chicken thigh, delicious. He seems to be enjoying the melon juice, I think that is a new taste for him - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Casa Fantasia

    16 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

I make sure to get up somewhat early. I drag him out of bed to go walk on the beach. I can't have enough of the playa, that is my thing. Early in the morning there are more dogs, it seems, than humans. I like seeing all the dogs, they all have brought their human friends with them. The friends sit on the low wall and talk and laugh while the dogs run and play in the sand. When I walk on the sand they all run up to me to say Hola. I have some business to take care of, and after I walk him for a while, it's time to go back to Casa Fantasia for our breakfast. I eat mine in the room, but he eats his in the courtyard while I sit there keeping my eye on him. I want to make sure that I don’t lose him - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Icecream Oaxaca

    16 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

After breakfast I drag him back to the Malecón, at the end there is an icecream shop that I know he likes. The weather is clear but he is sweating a lot, too humid for him I think. He orders a scoop of Oaxaca icecream, Mezcal con Higos, and the lady gives him a chair to sit on while I watch the traffic go by. Time to go back to the playa - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Playa Los Muertos

    16 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

The beaches seem to go on and on here, much bigger than my playa in Yelapa. I am having fun watching all the families and the hawkers and the small bands singing.

We are not seeing my Familia Fernández today, so we will eat by ourselves in this restaurant on the playa called El Burro restaurante. The guy standing outside inviting us in is named Karim. We go in and we sit at our own table. He orders a whole red snapper, grilled, to remind himself of the meal in Yelapa when we first met. I have a few morsels, it's good, but nothing compare to the fish at my home. They give him a bucket of three beers, Corona, on special for seventy pesos. The whole meal was cheap, and satisfying.

We walk and walk some more. The sun had long set, and it is time to go back to Casa Fantasia - Yelapa

  • Texcoco Barbacoa

    17 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

My Puerto Vallarta familia pick us up at 9:30 to go eat breakfast at Texcoco Barbacoa. They serve tacos and birria made with lamb. Eduardo and Yadira say that they love love the food here. He is so excited to try this very authentic lamb barbacoa. Of course he orders the birria. The server brings all the fixings :chopped cabbage and cilantro, chopped onions, limes and a couple salsas. He is raving about it. Eduardo orders a couple tacos for him, but he can eat only one, there is so much food. Everyone eats to the full, with soft drinks, and it all comes to 350 pesos, he can't believe how cheap it is. And, there is music to boot. A couple street performers stop by and sing for us. Anywhere you go in my country there seems to be music - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Cafestodo

    17 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Eduardo drives us here after breakfast for coffee. He says they get their beans locally from somewhere in the Sierra Madre and roast it fresh. He orders a double espresso and everyone else orders frappés. They sit and take their time enjoying their coffee. Yadira points that the building right across the street is the Social Security Clinic where she works. When the coffee is done, we pile up in the minivan and Eduardo starts it on the way to Sayulita. I sit in the back with him. Actually I sit in his arms most of the way. I like the way he holds me and I feel safe - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Playa de Sayulita

    17 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Eduardo is lucky with finding parking right away. We start for the Playa. It is really busy. I have never seen this many people on the beach. My playa in Yelapa never gets this crowded, but this playa is much much bigger. We walk on the sand and it is scorching my poor feet. I immediately take shelter under a beach chair. He feels bad for me and he picks me up in his arms and takes me to where the waves break and the sand is wet. Ah, it feels good on my feet. We walk up and down, watching the children playing in the water, some older ones learning how to surf, and everyone having a great time. The weather is great, the sun is out and the ocean is calm. Reminds me of many such days I have seen on my beach in Yelapa - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Don Pedro's Restaurant, Sayulita

    17 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

It seems the day will have a lot of eating. Yadira started her 2 weeks vacation and she is very happy. I am very happy too. They all pay attention to me all the time and they hold me and hug me and kiss me. At Don Pedro's Eduardo splits a big Hamburger with Yadira and Omartito orders arrachera, and he orders angel hair pasta. Yadira gives me a small morsel of her Kobe beef hamburger. I haven't had that before, and I love it. Right after lunch we head back and I hear him ask to stop to pick up some tequila at Soriana. We wait for him and Eduardo in the car, and pretty soon they are back with two bottles of Don Julio 70. He is telling everyone how good it is. The plan is to drop us off at our hotel, I need a siesta after all this and then pick us up for pizza, a treat for little Omar - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Pizza

    17 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

He walks into the pizza place with me in his arms. A large group of Americans stop him and they want to touch me and say hello. They are making a big deal out of it and I feel flattered. They wanted him to tell them all about me. He says we met on the Playa in Yelapa, over a month ago, and that he has come back so that I can travel with him to where he lives. This is the first I have heard of it. He says we leave the day after tomorrow. I don't know what to think, but I have become really fond of him and I want to be with him wherever it may be. Wow! This needs to sink in a little bit. First things first, pizza. Yadira orders chicken wings and she gives me a bite. Omar wants Hawaiian pizza, so they order a large one, half Hawaiian, half Margarita. He gives me a tiny bit of cheese, yum. He doesn't eat much, only a slice and drinks only water. Maybe he is excited about our leaving soon. I keep thinking, will I ever come back? - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Malecón - One last time

    18 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

He had bought some teeshirts, one size too small. We walk on the Malecón, it is still early and there are hardly any people or any dogs. Is the shop going to be open yet? When we get to the store, the lady had just opened the shutters and was starting to put the merchandise out. He tells her he needs large size, not medium. She jokes that he has been eating too many tacos. He laughs. Then she wanted to know all about me. He tells her we are leaving tomorrow, and that it will be my first ride on a plane. It is starting to really sink in. Yes, really. This is happening - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Casa Fantasia

    18 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We may be going out one last time with my Puerto Vallarta Familia. But he is getting busy packing. He had kept our room tidy, but now it is a little messy. I sit at the edge of the bed watching him. I still don't have any appetite, must be my nerves. For the first time today it rained gently for 20 minutes. Stopped now, which is a good thing because I may have to take him out for a walk - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Café de Olla

    18 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We are out trying to grab something quick for our last dinner in Puerto Vallarta. Hipólito tells him to try Cafe de Olla, which is only a few blocks away. It seems it is quite popular. We sit outside on the sidewalk, the waiter is really nice to me. He gives him my traveling water dish which the waiter fills with cool water and places it in front of me on the sidewalk. He orders beef fajitas and a Modelo cerveza. The fajitas are served, but he is very disappointed, the beef is dry, chewy and grisly. When the waiter comes back to check on us, he complains to him, I can sense that he is uncomfortable complaining, but the waiter takes the fajitas back and replaces them. The replacement is better, but, not much better. He splits the beef with me, which I eat heartily (chewy meat doesn't bother me). We finish and get started back to our hotel. I don't think we will come back here - YelapaMeer informatie

  • Casa Fantasia Hotel

    19 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

When we get back to the hotel, he has a surprise for me. He takes off my collar, the one my Hernández familia gave me ever since I came to live with them, and puts on my new clothes: a light orange fabric harness he bought for me at the vet. It feels funny initially, I have lived without clothes all my life on the playa in Yelapa, and now I have to get used to my new clothes. I sit by my bowls while he showers and gets dressed - YelapaMeer informatie

  • On the move

    19 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

It's time! We walk, I in my orange clothes and he in a red shirt that goes with my own colors, to the corner where there is usually a few taxis waiting. We reserve one of them, and walk one block for a last look at the playa. Back to the hotel, we say goodbye to Hipólito, load the suitcase in the trunk and head out to the airport - Yelapa

I ask the driver to stop at the Soriana store on the way to the airport; I need to buy the coffee that Laura loves, the Amor Café. But they ran out in that store and in the others (we called). I am disappointed. Yelapa seems to be doing well, she is sitting on the floor looking up at me. She melts my heart! She is so cute. I hope she is going to do well on this trip. The flight takes off at 2:00, and we don't get home until midnight. This is the first time I am traveling with a dog in my lap - Bassam

  • Puerto Vallarta Airport

    19 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Wow! What a big building! I have never been in a place like this one. It is huge, and I am amazed at the shiny floors and the tall ceilings. There were a lot of people, children and adults, most rolling suitcases behind them. I have seen some of the tourists who stay in the few inns in Yelapa pulling suitcases like these before. This is so exciting. At the airline counter everyone wants to talk to me and touch me. I am liking it - Yelapa

At the Southwest counter, I give them Yelapa's health certificate and the ESA letter. They check us in, it's a breeze. She is walking with me on her leash like she ownes the place. I am amazed at her poise. The surroundings don't bother her, the public announcement system doesn't bother her, the crowds don't bother her. You would think she was a pro at this and you would be incredulous that this is her first time at an airport and this her first trip - Bassam

  • Flight to Denver

    19 juli 2016, Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

We preboard. All the flight attendants are very nice to me. We sit in the back, in a window seat. This is really new and strange to me. More and more people are getting on and settling in their seats. A nice lady sits next to him in the middle seat with her companion sitting next to her. I am looking at and examining everyone, but I keep looking out of the window. Soon enough the engines are roaring, the plane is moving, and quickly we are up in the air. I am anxious, but I don't show it, I don't want him to worry. I look out of the window and see the beaches of my country way way below us. Adios Puerto Vallarta, I will always miss you - Yelapa

They close the cabin door, and we are taxiing for a little while. Yelapa is in my arms, her nose next to the window watching the scenery go by faster and faster. We are airborne and climbing. She is looking down at the receding coastline. I can see the beaches along the Pacific. She is calm, really calm. Only once when the engines sounds increased to a very high level as we were climbing, did she squirm a bit and became scared. I was worried she would freak out, but I stroked her and talked to her and she calmed down completely for the rest of the trip - Bassam

  • Denver Immigration and Customs

    19 juli 2016, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

We land at Denver International Airport. Yelapa is watching the landing out of the window. It is amazing how calm she is while experiencing her first landing. Yelapa and I are the last to deplane. It is very busy, I found out later that 4 international flights arrived at the same time, and the line snaked forever. Yelapa was so patient standing in line, lost between all the legs around her, she would occasionally sit and other times lie down, to get up again when the line starts moving. The immigration officer stamps my passport in one minute, and we walk to the baggage claim. Once I have my bag, we are directed to the agricultural officer. He asks for Yelapa's health certificate and rabies immunization certificate. He looks these over and waves Yelapa and myself through. And, just like that, Yelapa enters the United States. She is officially Americana! - BassamMeer informatie

  • Southwest Terminal - Denver Airport

    19 juli 2016, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

We are inside the large area where people are lining up to go through security. I give Yelapa some water. She drinks very little. Everyone wants to touch her and talk to her. A security officer picks her up and cuddles her. Yelapa has her first elevator ride. We go through security, I am holding her as we go through the metal detector. Once we go through, we take the train to the Southwest Terminal. Her first train ride. She is fascinated with everything and watching everything intently. We exit the train, I carry her up the long escalator to the food court area. And there, we stop at the McDonald's in the terminal. Yelapa's first American meal is fittingly a Big Mac with fries! She loves the few bites I give her - Bassam

We are in a very large building, much larger than the one in Puerto Vallarta. I am interested in the elevator, all the sliding doors, the escalator (he doesn't let me walk on that, he carries me in his arms) and the train. And when we get to our destination, he surprises me and buys a Big Mac with fries. I don't care much for the fries, but I love the few bites of beef. I love it. We wait for a bit and then get on the plane again - Yelapa
