      Last day in Brussels

      February 7, 2020 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

So that's my last day in Brussels before I head of tomorrow onwards to Bruges. It was spent walking around and enjoying the relaxed vibe of the city.

Not really sure what to say about Brussels it's super different to anywhere I have been. One minute your in the most incredible old traditional square surrounded by tourists, gold plated buildings and chocolate shops the next your in the metropolitan shopping street surrounded by new and high rise buildings and development.

It's a super cool place to be and I loved having a night out last night, met some cool people, practiced my Spanish a bit and got by great however the Belgian beer was a tad strong and I slept until like 11am 😂😂.

People are lovely and friendly as well and the trams are pretty cool to be fair. Also so many Irish bars!!

All round a lovely place to see and spend time. Looking forward to meeting a friend tomorrow

      Brussels

      July 3, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We started the day with a call home before heading out on our day of exploring the beers of Belgium!

Our first stop was Brussels oldest brewery where we learnt about the process required to brew ‘Lambic’ beer. The production of this beer does not use modern cooling tanks and temperature control, and as such cannot be brewed in summer when it is too hot. Instead, it relies on the natural weather environment and traditional methods like using wind to cool the beer as it is produced. It was very cool seeing the entire process from mashing the ingredients through to bottling and then finished the tour with a few samples of the lambic beer. It had a very interesting taste and is more similar to a wine rather than a beer, which makes sense given it is aged in a oak barrel. This type of process of making wine is only now done in Belgium and is very rare.

We walked for a bit from the brewery and checked out some more comic book murals across the city (and we even checked out a comic book store which was very cool!)

Our next stop involved ticking off another important Brussels food tradition - mussels! We had some delicious mussels and fries accompanied by a couple of very flavourful beers, a red rosè (made with raspberries) and triple amber!

There was one last "must eat" item in Brussels and that was chocolate! We went to Mary’s, the oldest shop in Brussels (which was the first to officially be the chocolate of choice for the royal family). Mary's was highly recommended by our tour guide from yesterday and they use traditional chocolate making techniques so we had to give it a go! It now has chains all over Belgium. We tried a couple each including a salted caramel dark chocolate, peacan chocolate and dark chocolate mousse (which was our favourite!) The chocolate was nothing short of delicious and gave us the energy to continue on with our pub crawl!

We went to the Delirium Cafe, where we tried their ‘Beer Meter’ - a long paddle of 10 quite sizeable tasting beers! We enjoyed the various flavours as we made another call ‘home’ - to Daniel’s parents in the US!

We made our final stop at a bar called Gist (dutch for yeast), which brew their own beers and just so happened to have happy hour whilst we were there! We enjoyed some strong sours (which Gab loved), amber and dark beers as the days' drinking was starting to catch up with us! We had some great chats and lots of fun sitting outside enjoying the little bit of sun.

We made it back to the Airbnb in one piece to have dinner and watch a movie and then called Daniel’s cousins in the US before heading to bed!

      La première galère !

      January 11 in Belgium ⋅ 🌙 -5 °C

      How it begins

      May 7, 2022 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Unsere zweite S.A.C. Rallye beginnt - how exciting - in der Hauptstadt von Europa vor wirklich amtlicher Kulisse, die James an die andere Hauptstadt und mich an meinen geschätzten Dadaisten R. Grebe erinnert.

      Brussles Day 2

      December 4, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

We walked around the city after lunch, and its common to sit outside at patios to drink/eat even when it’s cold out…so we joined the fun with some warm alcoholic coffee at this Italian cocktail place! Then had dinner at a small restaurant by our Airbnb that is known for their beer - had the most fun and friendly servers at both places. Ended the night at a fun bar talking with some people from London, and got Belgian McDonald’s before heading home :)Read more

      City tour 💫

      February 6 in Belgium ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

Read more

      In the Streets

      July 14, 2022 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We spent the afternoon what we were planning to do tomorrow. Started with Luxembourg, then Strasbourg, before finally settling on Cologne...although whether we stay there or push on to Koblenz remains to be seen!

On the way back to the hotel we passed a lovely looking cafe serving mussels so we returned their for dinner along with some of their own Grimberger beer - both were delicious.

Today was the start of the In The Streets festival, so once we finished eating we wandered over to the roller dance display, which was superb. They then had skates free to hire, so we had to have a go. I managed to get my skates on, stand up, and instantly fall down! B at least made it to the rink without falling over. Impressively, we both only fell once!

We took a long walk back via the Grand Place and some bustling side streets to round off our time in Brussels 🇧🇪

      The two chocolatiers

      November 1, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

We started the day slowly this morning with tea and coffee in the nice common area of our hostel. Now that it's getting nice and chilly, we decided it was time to clear some space in our bags and send some of our warm weather clothes back home. We put the plan into action, only to find out that today is a public holiday and the post office is closed -- oops!

With that postponed until tomorrow, we decided to go for a walk and happened to stumble across a nice looking hot chocolate place. The two of us decided it was in our best interest to try it... And we were right, very nice!

Next up was a chocolate tour which we had booked (don't worry, we left space after the hot drink!) It was quite interesting, probably more engaging than the one at Lindt. 1 point to Belgian chocolate over Swiss.

Once we were full of chocolate and knowledge we then went for a walk around the town to stumble across various sights, including the Royal Palace, Parc de Bruxelles, the Cathedral of Saint Michael, the Royal Gallery of Saint Hubert, and another very important statue in Brussels: The peeing dog!

As we haven't been feeling our best today (unrelated to the chocolate, we swear!) The next decision we made was to go back to the hostel and rest with some light planning.

Once it reached the evening, the two of us went to find something affordable to have for dinner which ended up being the tried and tested bread and soup combo! Still a winner.

      Blown away

      November 2, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

Today started off at the laundromat, where we *had* to go buy a coffee so we had enough change to not be walking around in crusty clothes.

The summer clothes package was sent off too, and luckily it was - because today was the windiest day we've both ever experienced. We're talking about parks being shut down because trees are leaping from the ground, not being able to walk straight or against it without the likelihood you'll be pushed over.

So what did we decide to do? Walk an hour and a half in it. Not only this but it started raining about half way to our destination and we couldn't use our brollies because they would immediately fold inside out and break.

After a beautiful but turbulent walk we arrived at the meaning of life, the Atomium. This structure was originally constructed as the centrepiece of the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, standing at 102 metres it's an impressive structure. Up in the spheres it felt like being on a ship it was shaking so much, but it gave a very nice view of Brussels.

We trained back to the city where we went to the supermarket to pick up some soup for dinner, and a relaxing afternoon.

      Gofre y cerveza 🍺

      February 7 in Belgium ⋅ 🌧 5 °C
