      Sofia - Das Mittelmeer kommt näher

      Mit dem Zug gings von Bukarest nach Sofia. Hatte schon ruhigere Fahrten, dieses Mal waren 2 kleine Kinder dabei. Aber naja, Kopfhörer und einfach mal aus dem Fenster schauen hilft dagegen eigentlich schon ganz gut, die Landschaft war echt schön.

      Hatte nur einen vollen Tag in Sofia, da ich erst abends angekommen bin und 10 Stunden Zugfahren, irgendwie doch anstrengend sind und am Samstag früh morgens nach Thessaloniki fahre.

      Denn Freitag habe ich dann aber doch gut genutzt, morgens mal wieder meine Wäsche gemacht und Mittags habe ich dann eine Stadtführung gemacht.
      Dort habe ich dann Margreet aus den Niederlanden kennengelernt und wir haben uns danach dann noch die Stadt etwas genauer und ein paar Kirchen von innen angeschaut. Leider war es aber verboten von innen Fotos zu machen, außer man zahlt 5€:)

      Eine echt interessante Stadt, beim Bau der Metro wurden dauernd alte Sachen aus der Römerzeit gefunden, um die man dann rum bauen musste und die man sich jetzt anschauen kann. In der Stadt sollen wohl schon vor circa 8000 Jahren Menschen gelebt haben, was es somit zu einer der ältesten Städte Europas macht. Hier waren und sind alle möglichen Religionen vertreten, was man auch an den Kirchen sieht.

      In Sofia gibt's eigentlich echt viel zu sehen, die Stadt ist riesig.
      Hab aber auch schon schönere Städte in Europa gesehen, hätte wahrscheinlich eher in kleineren Städten Halt machen sollen.

      Sofia, Bulgaria

      We arrived in Sofia at sunrise after a brutal overnight journey from Istanbul. The journey included a land border crossing around 3 am. With snow mountains surrounding the city, and the air temperature about 6°C, we were happy to finally have arrived and be starting the next chapter. Our plans for our next 10 days in Bulgaria are to hopefully get to the nearby ski fields of Borovets. But despite my research showing the season planned to start this weekend we’re unsure of whether there’s even snow there. With the local language written in Cyrillic and websites impossible to navigate it’s been hard to get any clear information.

      We checked into our apartment early thanks to the automated check-in process having a lockbox with the key available before the determined check-in time. Similar to my impression of Albania, it was nice to be in a city that felt modern and civilised after the constant hustling of Istanbul. We indulged in a deluxe breakfast - a Brekkie burger and scrambled eggs on toast. Then, we returned to the apartment and slept for a few hours. It’s amazing how comfortable a bed can be after 2 back-to-back overnight buses.

      At 2 pm we went and joined a 2hr walking tour that took us around the key points of the city centre. We heard about how Bulgaria had evolved from the Therasians thousands of years ago through multiple conquests of the Romans, ottomans and the Soviet Union. And now it has emerged as a democracy proudly retaining the various cultural influences of the past.

      That night we wandered into the German Christmas Market which was something I’d been super excited to introduce Jessie to. Being her first time experiencing a “white Christmas” I’d been hoping to find a Kristkindlemarkt in Iceland once we were properly in the snowy weather. I never could’ve guessed that we’d get it in Bulgaria!      Les mer

      Basilica de Santa Sofia

      La basílica de Santa Sofía, es una de las iglesias más antiguas de la capital búlgara, junto con la de San Jorge, el otro templo de época romana de la ciudad.       Galería de Arte Nacional y Extranjero

      La Natsionalna galeriya za chuzhdestranno izkustvo se fundó en 1985 y contiene piezas de artistas extranjeros, como su nombre indica. La galería está en un edificio neoclásico que se construyó en 1884 y se reconstruyó tras los daños que sufrió en los bombardeos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

      En esta interesante galería, vas a poder disfrutar de una exposición permanente con obras de artistas europeos, asiáticos y africanos. Entre todos ellos, destacan algunos más conocidos como Auguste Rodin, Rembrandt, Picasso, Miró, Goya, Dalí, Jan van Goyen, Rosso Fiorentino, Pierre-Auguste Renoir o Nicolaes Pietersz, entre otros.       Sofia Guided Tour

      So...
      These guards guarding the presidents day to day office have their own guards to prevent people touching them. They are extremely still.

      After the president had arrived and driven in, we were able to walk through the arch to see the St George Rotunda, which is not only the oldest intact building in Sofia, but one of the oldest ones in the world. All you can see is original and preserved, not rebuilt in any way, even the roof! You can still go in today.

      The Russian Church holds the remains of the pope who laid the first stone of the building, who promised after death to take the wishes of all to god, so people write their wishes to him still now and believe all your wishes will come true there.

      Lastly the cathedral, a thanks to the Russians for something, it took 30 years to build, the gold is real gold, and the heaviest of the bells weighs 12 tonnes on its own!!

      Shame we didn't get to hear them ring.

      Last 2 things we learned that were interesting, the Bulgarians invented their alphabet (not the 'Russian' alphabet as most believe) and its now used by many countries including Russia, Ukraine, Macedonia, Serbia, Kazakhstan etc etc. They are VERY proud of this and hate people asking 'why they use the Russian alphabet'

      And the most interesting...
      In WW2, they were of course allies with Germany, and were under great pressure to send all their Jewish citizens to the concentration camps.
      Due to Bulgaria not having an antisemitic population, there was huge outcry at this and many protest all over the country, particularly Sofia and Plovdiv.
      The King knew he had to listen to the Bulgarian people but also didn't want to upset the Germans, so used the excuse of the typical Bulgarian late and unorganised-ness, by coming up with excuse after excuse and wasting time...
      'the road out is broken, we need the Jews for 3 more months - times are hard - it's war times - things are taking longer than usual' etc etc 😄
      Until eventually they lost the war, and were the only European German allies who managed to save every single Jew! (over 500,000 lives)      Les mer

      Der Flug nach Sofia dauerte knappe 2 Stunden. Es war eigentlich sehr angenehm und das Flugzeug halb leer. In Bulgarien habe wir eine Stunde Zeitverschiebung. Wir fahren mit dem Taxi zu unserem Hotel im Zetrum, checken ein und suchen nach einem Restaurant. Viele haben leider zu. Wahrscheinlich Folgen von Corona. Es ist sehr schwer etwas traditionelles und günstiges im Stadtzentrum zu finden.

      Nach einer Kleinigkeit zum Mittagessen erkunden wir die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten. Es ist sehr heiß, wir sind müde und Marlon hat überhaupt keine Lust sich die Stadt anzuschauen. Free walking tour um 18:00 machen wir deswegen nicht mit und fahren mit den City Rollern in eine Kneipe. Vitamin B bietet verschiedene Craft- und Fassbiere. Wir probieren 4 Sorten aus.

      Die Suche nach einem einheimischen, traditionellen Restaurant ist leider erfolglos, wir essen deswegen in einer Pizzeria. Das Essen ist ok, aber auch kein kulinarisches Erlebnis. Am Abend lassen wir es uns gut gehen und können uns entspannen. Unser Hotel hat im Keller ein Spa Bereich. Die Sauna, das Danpfbad und die Jakkuzi nur für uns. Herrlich! Wir sind beide fix und fertig und schlafen tief und fest.      Les mer

      Pub Crawl 🍻

      Esta noche, junto con Mari, que ya tiene las pilas cargadas, participamos en un Pub Crawl en el que conocemos a mucha gente de diferentes países 🌎

      Empezamos probando cervezas locales en diferentes bares y al final acabamos en una discoteca. La hora de la última foto que tengo son las 3am así que concluyo que volvimos bastante tarde 🪩Les mer
