  • Bangkok, Thailand

    2. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

We arrived at Bangkok after a long day of travel yesterday. Went out exploring the city today! Southeast Asia continues to surprise me. I have the preconceived notions of what a city or country will be like, and then I find I am very wrong.

Bangkok is odd. They have an intricate mass transport system, but then a whole large area is just blacked out. Nothing but buses which aren’t as nice to get around on as metros. Of course our hotel is right in the middle of that blacked out area. So we spent some time just seeing how to get around and we’re pleasantly surprised. Bangkok has a great water taxi system, that mainly the locals use to get around in this area. So we jumped on and did our best to negotiate it. English is not spoken near as well here so we’re back to miming or using a lot of google translate to try to communicate. The people are very helpful tho.

So while we were figuring out the boat/SkyTrain system we found ourselves in a modern section of the city so ran with it. Went into the malls and found they’re just as amazing as Singapore’s. They have a full aquarium in their mall! And so many stores from the USA that surprised me to see. A Sizzler?? Crazy. We had a late lunch at a hotpot place - fun to finally try it. And then we headed to the skywalk. A 77 story tower with a glass roof! Really scary to walk out on. Beautiful sunset again, and then a wonderful ride back to the hotel on the water taxi at night.

It was a great day of just figuring out how the city works and playing it by ear.

  • All the temples

    3. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 88 °F

There are SO many temples in Bangkok. A crazy amount. We only went to a few, but dang, so ornate and pretty.

We take water taxi’s a lot here. Just the easiest and cheapest way to get around. While we were out, getting on and off, it must have been high tide because all the houses on the river as well as piers were under water. Pretty crazy.

We headed to Wat Arun temple - it was GORGEOUS. Then we went to the Grand palace which had a second temple there. So much history.

  • Pigs, parks, lizards & Chinatown

    4. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Today we headed out by water taxi again - saw our friendly piggies in the street again. Five of them this time. This time up and wandering.

Then we headed to Lumpini park - they call it the Central Park of Bangkok. It was very pretty - they have 400 Monitor lizards living there. They looked a lot like Komodo dragons to me, but apparently are much smaller. We only saw one on the banks, who had just caught a fish and was eating it. Very intimidating.

Then we headed to Chinatown! It was loud, bright, and FULL of life and FOOD! All kinds of food. We ate and ate - tried all different things - and only spent like $15! It was awesome. Stand outs were: coconut cake dessert that was wonderful, noodles with crab, shrimp gyozas and mango sticky rice!!

Where we’re staying there is a family that practices acrobatics every night in the street - we see them when we get back. They’re practicing for a Chinese New Years celebration. We got video of them tonight. The youngest, on the top, is only 5.

  • Last day in Bangkok

    5. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

We got a late start on our last day in Bangkok today. First stop was a water taxi to a temple we had already been to during the day, Wat Arun, but wanted to see it at night. It was absolutely stunning.

Then jumped on the subway and headed back to Chinatown, because dang, couldn’t match that food anywhere!

Then we stopped at Khao San Road - famous road and had to see it for ourselves. If you are into partying, that’s the place to be in Bangkok. Lots of weed, laughing gas, and insects for sale!!! Scorpion, tarantula, crocodile … you name it. Nope, didn’t try any. Then grabbed a tuk tuk back to our hotel, which is an experience in itself!

Bangkok is a big city, and I’m learning for the most part I don’t like big cities as much. But this was a good stop over as we head to more places in Thailand.

  • Travel day

    6. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We flew from Bangkok to Chiang Mai today. It’s a city in the far north of Thailand in/near the mountains. It is completely different here than Bangkok. Feels like island life, without the islands.

We’re staying in “old town” - built in 1296 as a walled city surrounded my a moat! Most of the walls have come down, but the moat still exists. Only the corner walls and portions of the gates are still intact.

We walked around a bit, found the moat and had some dinner. Hoping this will be a magical time up here in this small city - lots planned and can’t wait to get started!!!!

  • Elephants!!

    7. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Elephants have a long history in Thailand. Unfortunately, that history includes hundreds if not thousands of years of terrible abuse from infancy to old age. They are captured, chained, beaten in a process called “the crush” - referring to crushing the elephants spirit in order to tame them. They have been used in dangerous logging operations, tourism (riding), circuses, entertainment, forced breeding - they are generally poached at a young age. The handlers of these elephants are called “mahouts” and pair with an elephant at capture and then stay with them their entire lives - the mahouts have been taught to control them with sticks with nails in them and hooks they put through their ears. It’s a terrible history.

Thailand is slowly coming around and making laws outlawing abuse, but it’s still happening - so elephant sanctuaries have come into existence. People rescue them from these abusive situations, heal them and allow them to live their lives in peace on their land. Unfortunately, when visiting a sanctuary you have to be very careful as there are only a few ethical ones here in Thailand - many are using the elephants to draw in tourists, still subjecting them to a life of service and abuse.

We did a lot of research and located a great, ethical elephant sanctuary in the northern part of Thailand - Elephant Nature Park and had an overnight adventure (two full days) there learning about the facility and seeing the operation. It was AMAZING!

They not only rescue elephants, they rescue all kinds of abused or injured animals - elephants (116), water Buffalo (100+), cows (50+), cats (2000!), dogs (600!), bunnies, and pigs! Many of these animals live together, coexisting, roaming free during the day - it’s amazing to watch. And the tourists and workers just walk amongst them.

The elephants cannot be released back into the wild, unfortunately. They’ve tried and found once domesticated, they are unable to survive on their own. They do run adoption for the cats and dogs though.

The elephants come to the park occasionally already in family units but sometimes they come individually. They’re given a chance to join another family grouping if they wish to or they can live alone. When one dies, they even allow the elephants to be present at the burial to mourn.

Each elephant has had mahout - a handler- its whole life and because they are domesticated and not wild, they still expect one to be by their side. So the park has a rehabilitation program of sorts for the mahouts as well. They hire them, remove them from the bad environments they are working in and teach them how to handle the elephants humanely and ethically. Each of the 116 elephants here has their own mahout. They have no weapons or tools anymore - they are armed with only “bananas and love” and it’s amazing to watch them work so closely with these massive animals in such a loving and kind way.

There are no cages or fences here (for the elephants). They roam freely, with their mahout watching over them. The elephant groupings have their own territory and stick to an area and there’s hundreds of acres to pick from. At night the elephants are brought into large shelters in their groupings where there are fences. This is for their own protection from predators and human poaching. This also gives their mahout a break from their care for the night.

We saw terribly injured elephants. Many blinded from slingshots and other cruelties, many with broken deformed legs that never healed correctly, one who stepped on a landmine breaking one leg and injuring the other foot terribly, and some females who had their hips and legs broken during forced breeding operations. It was heartbreaking to see. Some elephants have lived their entire lives chained, and this is their first experience getting to roam free.

In the wild, male elephants leave the herd at 9-11 years old and only return for mating - so this is a sanctuary almost exclusively of females. Males can’t coexist in the herd. They have rescued a small handful of them, but they have to live in isolation, unfortunately.

We didn’t ride the elephants, didn’t touch them (unless they approached us and even then, it was rare), we didn’t bathe them - All we did was watch them, marvel at them, walk among them, and we were allowed to feed some of the older ones rice/banana balls for one of the feedings. Overall, this was a remarkable experience that I can’t praise highly enough!!

  • Kitties and pups!

    7. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

Inside the Elephant nature park there was also a cat and dog rescue. The cats (2000 of them!) are kept in multiple “cat kingdoms” - outdoor fenced beautiful habitats made just for them. Visitors all day, every day come in and are able to just sit and love on these cats. It was incredible to have so much feline affection. Also incredible was the lack of infighting - I didn’t expect that. At one point, Jordan and I must have had at least a dozen cats on and around us. It was awesome.

They are well cared for - they are quarantined when they arrive. They get a vet visit, wormed, shots, and neutered/spayed. At the end of quarantine they slowly get released into the larger settings. Since it gets chilly at night in Northern Thailand many of the short hair cats have sweaters put on them daily. It was cute.

They also have a dog rescue. Sadly, MANY strays are hit by cars in Thailand and are left paralyzed. Most get brought here. They have over 600 dogs living there, 40 of which are paralyzed and in wheel chairs. 50 or more of the friendlier 600 are free roaming and attach themselves to a manhout working with their elephant, lay around the compound or wander in friendly packs. The herding dogs spent their days rounding up the water Buffalo, whether they liked it or not. 😂 The rest are in dog runs in quarantine, or in groupings of “like size and type” of dogs.

The adoption of the small animals stopped with Covid, but is starting again now, so they’re hoping to start getting them into homes.

The park is funded by tourists staying there overnight like we did or coming to visit for a day trip - the day we got there 160 people arrived to see the park. They also have lots of corporate and personal sponsorship. They also have a volunteer program - people flock there to pay $400 a week to work there!! Some come back over and over again. The seven veterinarians they have are also volunteers - tho they don’t pay for that privilege. 😂

Again, an amazing experience run by amazing people. It’s not perfect - but it’s definitely a better situation for these animals than how they were before they came there.

  • Loy Krathong festival

    8. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

We were sad to have to leave the elephants, but made it back to Chiang Mai. Tonight starts their annual Full moon festival. A krathong is a small floating container and they are usually made 100% of plants and flowers. You can make one yourself or buy them from one of the many street vendors. You light it, and then float it on the main river in town. The Thai people believe they are floating away bad wishes or bad luck - some feel it is a time to make a wish for good luck.

It was very pretty standing by the river watching hundreds of krathongs float past (picture doesn’t do it justice). They have a massive celebration with parades, music, fun, fireworks and of course FOOD. We ate SO MUCH! It was fun to take part in all of it

  • Hot air balloons … FINALLY!

    9. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

We watched the hot air balloons in Cappadocia, Turkey and knew we wanted to get on one. We made plans for Egypt and then the weather let us down … twice. But today was the day! We finally made it on a hot air balloon this morning and what a beautiful site it was.

Chiang Mai is in the very northern border of Thailand and is surrounded by mountains. We couldn’t have asked for a better day weather wise. No wind, wonderful temperature and beautiful location.

It was scary, thrilling, exhilarating and eventually so very peaceful. We were two of 6 in the basket + the pilot, so a small intimate group. They launched just two balloons. At times you could hear a pin drop it was so quiet up there. We climbed to 2000 ft and spent just about an hour in the air.

This is the only licensed hot air balloon company in all of Thailand - been in operation 17 years. Our pilot was amazing and so entertaining.

This was a few months in the making, but SO worth the wait!

    9. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

When we began planning this trip, we threw Chiang Mai on the list of places to go because we saw they had a lantern festival here. Then we made the trip around being here on November 9th to be part of it.

When we arrived a few days ago we were so upset to find out the launching of the lanterns was now illegal here because of safety concerns and they say it was a problem for the airport. We were bummed.

Different organizations have capitalized on this and have created their own festival locations away from the city, and charged the tourists and arm and a leg to come. Think hundreds of dollars. It was just too much for our budget.

Luckily, by chance we were chatting with our driver who took us out to the hot air balloon and he told us of a festival the locals go to about an hour away from the city - which was reasonable charge to get into. So we did it!!

They bussed us out to it, provided us dinner and 4 lanterns, 2 Krathongs and we had the time of our life. It was like a county fair atmosphere and It was so beautiful to sit and watch. We stayed three hours sitting on a bridge marveling at the sight of thousands of lanterns in the sky. (Think “Tangled”)

Overall, our few days here in Chiang Mai will go down as some of the best of the entire trip. Simply magical!

  • Phi Phi Islands

    14. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ 🌧 81 °F

We took a tour out to the Phi Phi Islands (pronounced Pee Pee). Basically it was just island hopping in a basic catamaran for 7 hours. It was interesting and really glad I did it (but can say now, Vietnam’s Ha Long/Lan ha bays beat it hands down for beauty).

Unfortunately, this area is simply “over-touristed”. In Vietnam they control how many boats are allowed out in the bay, but here, doesn’t look like any such control exists. The lagoons were FILLED with boats - too much. We did get to swim around the boat and Jordan did some diving off the top, which was fun!

There is a “monkey island” here. Some tours go onto the beach, but tourists are getting attacked, so our tour only took us up to the beach to get a glance. After experiencing the monkeys in Bali, we definitely learned they can be far too aggressive. Fun seeing them from the distance of the boat.

Leonardo DiCaprio did a movie here in 2000 called “The Beach” - all filmed on Maya Beach in Phi Phi. Sadly, they had to shut the beach down for two years to let it “rest” from over tourism. It’s open again, but not for swimming - you can just walk out on it. Our tour included it but when we saw the crowds and lines, we opted to stay on the boat and skip it. Actually really nice having the 40ft catamaran, anchored away from the harbor, to ourselves for an hour. 😂

We also went snorkeling - not either of our favorite things to do. (Once you’ve Scuba dove, hard to go back). But, this site was actually really nice, fairly shallow, and had lots of sea life.

We learned that if you put a red filter on the GoPro it captures the colors underwater so bought one in town and tried it out for the first time. The pictures turned out so much better. Can’t wait to try it when we dive next time.

  • Old Town Phuket

After I head home, Jordan is heading on for bigger and better adventures - one of which is Australia. Well, for her to get her work visa she needed to have a pretty thorough physical done … so … we headed to Phuket City to get it done! Was interesting to watch a hospital at work in a foreign country tho. Thailand knows how to get it done! She got a full physical, urine test and full chest X-ray .. for a whopping $80. Glad she didn’t have to have that done in the US.

After the trip to the hospital we headed to old town Phuket for food and souvenir shopping. Then we found a mall and went to the new Black panther movie! And again, as always, going to theaters in other countries is a really interesting experience. Really fun day.

  • Diving again

    17. November 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

We heading back out diving one last time together, near the Phi Phi islands. It was a beautiful, calm day on the ocean. We did three dives - a wreck, pinnacle and wall - and went very deep on al three, about 25m. Only advanced or higher divers were allowed today - the dive was more difficult - so very glad I got my advanced certification in Bali!

These were probably the most gorgeous dives I’ve had yet - not that I have a lot to compare them to with only 12 dives under my belt, but Jordan agreed and she just hit 50 so … there was white and purple soft coral, that I’ve never seen. We saw lots of moray eels, a couple sea snakes, sea horses, and schools with thousands of fish. Crazy beautiful.

Our dive master, Oui, was wonderful. She was so excited to show us everything she could - her enthusiasm made it so much more fun!

The wreck we went to was a ferry that had crashed over 20 years ago. So much coral has grown on it and the massive Tsunami of 2004 apparently displaced many fish to this area, and now they call it home.

Getting certified was a great decision. So fun to share this hobby with Jordan!

  • The Big Buddha

Jordan and I got airplane tattoos back in Amsterdam months ago. I’ve been planning on adding more to it when my trip was complete - so I did it today and finished it up.

Then we headed up to the “Big Buddha”. It’s a 45 meter tall Buddha statue on the top of the tallest hill in Phuket. He was a very big Buddha. 😂 After, we decided to take one last hike - and it wouldn’t be one of our hikes unless we got a bit lost! There were two trails down - one very steep and difficult, and one that was flat and meandered it’s way back. We thought we were on the easy trail but turned out we made a wrong turn and found ourselves on the really steep one. So we spent a couple hours in the jungles of Thailand, slipping and sliding down some very steep areas. Made it fine and felt accomplished once down but dang, it was a hike.

We bought food at the night street market again for dinner and took it to the beach. We sat and ate our dinner and watched another beautiful sunset. I’m going to miss this.

Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world. It’s a Buddhist temple, but it was originally built as Hindu. Cambodia as a country converted to Buddhism, so the temple was changed as well. It’s most well known in the US as the temple shown in the Tomb Raider movie with Angelina Jolie.

There are 300 separate temples at this complex so if left to your own devices, could be here for days to see it all - so we decided to go on an organized tour and see just three of the “best” ones. Great experience.

After 247 days, today was the last full day Jordan and I have together on this trip. Sadly, tomorrow (Thanksgiving day) we part ways. I’m heading back to the states, and she is continuing her adventures solo.

We flew from Cambodia back to Thailand today. Bangkok seems to be a major hub for SE Asia and all flights seem to go thru here.

We had a fun time - went back to Chinatown to enjoy the wonderful street food and then I headed to the mall. Jordan won’t be with the family for Christmas this year (for the first time ever) and after I leave her tomorrow, it will be close to impossible to send her anything - so, I went Christmas shopping!! Now she’ll have a few gifts Christmas day to open from the family.

It was much more fun than I expected. Bangkok is all decked out for Christmas and to my surprise, the mall was playing tons of Christmas music (in English) as I shopped. Really made it special and got me in the mood for the holidays. I was even able to find a place where they were doing gift wrapping. Not quite as nice as I would have done at home, but it will do! ❤️

    24. November 2022 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Jordan and I parted ways at the Bangkok airport this morning. A very tearful goodbye. Over the months we’ve traveled together we’ve grown quite close, so was very difficult for both of us to say goodbye.

Going to be an exhausting Thanksgiving day of travel. I left Bangkok at 8am on 11/24. I will land in Seattle around 2:30, also on 11/24 - but will have traveled for 21 hours. (Tho the clock will only have shown I had been traveling 6 1/2 hours). I’m basically living thru Thanksgiving day, twice. 🦃

I really had wanted to get to Japan on this trip, but eventually the budget didn’t allow it. I did technically land there tho, as I had a layover this “evening” in Tokyo!

This will be the only day in my life where I’ll experience watching the sunset twice! Once in Tokyo and hours later in Seattle. Weird.

  • International Travel done

    24. November 2022 in Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

Landing in Vancouver, Canada today my International portion of my trip is now completed. I’m really sad to have it be over. I’m definitely experiencing quite a bit of culture shock already, as it’s been 4-5 months since we’ve been anywhere near the “Western world”. To sit in an airport and be able to read and understand all the signs, understand everyone’s conversations around me, and as a white person NOT be a minority - this is all so strange, and honestly, I don’t t like it. 😫 It’s going to take me a bit to adjust.

People have asked what we’re doing now. Jordan is hanging out on Koh Samui, Thailand until the first of the year - decompressing and relaxing in an Airbnb. Then a couple buddies from college are joining her there and they’ll all travel around Thailand for a couple weeks together. After they leave, Jordan is off the South Korea for two months! She’ll be working in a “language cafe” getting free room and board to sit and have coffee with Koreans and let them practice their English with her! Then she’ll head to Japan for 3 weeks just for tourism. After that, on to Australia - she has been approved for a work holiday visa, and will do odd jobs as she moves around the continent for a year!!

Me, well, I’m hanging out on the West Coast for three weeks or so visiting friends and family in Seattle, Boise and Tualatin/Portland! I haven’t been back since I moved to South Carolina in 2019 (Covid). Then heading back to Greenville, SC mid December to get moved back into my townhouse, meet up with Adam for Christmas (haven’t seen him in forever!) and get working.

This has been a tremendous adventure. We will have traveled 9 months - 29 countries, 4 continents, in 4 oceans and multiple seas. We’ve taken 92 major forms of transportation - 43 planes, 16 trains, 24 long distance buses, and 9 lengthy ferries. We learned about so many cultures - my racist thoughts/stereotypes (that I didn’t even want to admit I had) were destroyed, and I learned to enjoy and highly respect so many different races and ethnicities - especially the SE Asian people.

This trip allowed me to spend so much time with my thoughts and to thoroughly contemplate the big (and small) questions of life - to really think about where I’ve come from, who I’ve been, who I am and who I want to be. I am without a doubt a changed person …

My time with Jordan was the biggest gift I received. Throughout this time she has educated me - gently - in her and her generations beliefs and viewpoints. We spent hundreds of hours talking about every subject and world event imaginable. We are more than mother-daughter now, we are great friends. I respect her so much - her heart, her viewpoints, her politics and her passion.

As I come home, all I can think about is traveling again, where I would want to go back to, what new places I want to see. Plans are already forming in my head. Exciting plans. Retirement in a foreign country is definitely on my radar in the next few years. “Where” is the only question.

I’ll continue posting pics of my west coast fun, but for the most part I’m done. Thank you to all who followed me on this adventure - I loved interacting with those who made comments or asked questions along the way. It made it so much more fun for me.

My goal when we set out on this trip was to be brave, to be strong, and to be smart. We definitely did brave things - we hiked/walked thousands of miles - and we were smart about our choices without getting injured, mugged or threatened in any way. I think we accomplished all three!
