Pasto und Laguna de la Cocha

Die letzten 2 Tage von mittlerweile über 3 Wochen in Kolumbien verbrachten wir in Pasto. Die Stadt liegt in einem Bergkessel auf knapp 2600 m ü. NN. Das Klima ist relativ kühl und wir erlebten unseren 1.! Regentag in Kolumbien 😄. Die Stadt selber hat nicht wirklich viel zu bieten, wir nutzen ihn mehr als letzten Zwischenstopp bevor es nach Ecuador geht. Die Umgebung bietet jedoch einige Vulkane und Seen die Touristen anlocken. Wir besuchten die Laguna de la Cocha, der zweitgrößte See in Kolumbien. Der kleine Ort El Encano, der sich direkt am Nordufer des Sees befindet, besteht eigentlich ausschließlich aus Hostels und Restaurants. Als wir dort waren fand gerade das Forellenfest statt. Es wurden Preise für die größten und schwersten Forellen verliehen. Nachdem wir den Ort besichtigt hatten gab's natürlich auch für uns eine leckere Forelle. Eine große Portion mit Suppe und Getränk für 12.000 Pesos. Das sind gerade mal 3.5 €.

Heute geht's weiter nach Ecuador. Wir freuen uns und sind sehr gespannt was uns dort erwartet. Außerdem sind wir bereits ziemlich genau bei der Hälfte unserer Reisezeit angelangt.Read more

Pasto - Dag 1

Na heerlijk geslapen zijn Nolan en ik de hele dag door Pasto gaan struinen. Pasto ligt op 2527 meter hoogte, en gedurende de dag zie je de wolken zich langs het hogergelegen deel van de stad bewegen. Voordat de Spanjaarden deze stad officieel stichtten in 1537, heeft hier een inheems volk geleefd: de Pasto. Tot op de dag van vandaag identificeren 163.873 van de ruim 480.000 inwoners zich als Pasto.

De stad zelf is niet zo extreem veel aan. Behalve een paar mooie kerken, en enkel mooi straatje en twee lelijke pleinen, stelt het niet veel voor. Omdat Pasto dus bekend zou staan om de Cavia, besloten Nolan en ik opzoek te gaan naar onze eerste ervaring met Cavia's. Op het bord dan. Als twee kleine kindjes vonden we eindelijk een plek met meerdere Cavia restaurants en liepen we enthousiast naar binnen en bestelden we Cavia. Cavia komt met popcorn op de een of andere manier, maar dit werkte verbazingwekkend goed.

Cavia zelf is niet echt met iets te vergelijken. Wellicht lijkt het op andere knaagdieren, maar hier heb (nog) geen ervaring mee... Het vlees is superzacht en gleed er vrij makkelijk vanaf. Klimaatactivisten benoemen Cavia trouwens als klimaatvriendelijk alternatief voor rundvlees!Read more

Vannacht werd ik wakker met flinke koorts, gepaard met diarree. Meteen denk ik aan de cavia, ik vrees dat hij de boosdoener is geweest. Helaas is het sochtends nog steeds gaande, dus heb ik besloten nog een extra nacht in Pasto te blijven, en niet met Nolan naar Ecuador te vertrekken. De dag bestond verder dus uit het bezoeken van de smalle wachtkamer, en overdag heel even geprobeerd ontbijt te eten en een voorraadje crackers, water, paracetamol en vitamine C tabletjes in te slaan. Entering Colombia through Nariño

Yeah, the last border of our trip and finally destination: Colombia!
After 5 hours passing through the amazing mountain landscape of northern Ecuador, we crossed by foot the bridge between Ecuador and Colombia, entering the department of Nariño.
Finally back in Colombia, Isa's home country and Ulf's beloved old home. But honestly, it felt rather unusual. The south of Colombia is very different from what we know about this country. Actually after independence from Spain, the department chose to become a part of Ecuador, but the new Colombian army "convinced" them otherwise. It is an extremely beautiful landscape, and Colombia's Andean or Inca's side! And the first site, is directly behind 'Las Lajas, a famous pilgrim destination consisting of a church on a bridge, so remote that most Colombians only know it from pictures. After that, we continued to Pasto the department's capital. We decided to stay two nights, to have time to visit another remote sight, the beautiful mountain lake of 'La Cocha' and enjoy the last peculiarity from the Andes we hadn't tried yet: eating guinea pig. The lake was absolutely marvelous, the guinea pig tasted rather unique...and having tried it once, is probably enough!Read more

A Pause in Pasto

We arrived at the terminal de transporte in Ipiales and found the only way to get to Pasto was by collectivo / small minivans, sometimes referred to as microbuses or megabuses, depending on the size of the vehicle. We had eyed-off a transport company that had buses that were bigger than a matchbox car. But as we have become accustomed in South America, you never get what you think you are getting and we ended up squashed into the back of a “megabus”. The megabus was supposed to hold eight people but the child sitting on his grandmother's lap didn't count as a passenger.

After about two hours of driving around mountains, watching the constant flow of Venezuelan refugees heading to the border, we were dropped off at the Pasto terminal de transporte. Pasto is the capital of the Nariño department, with about half a million residents, but surprisingly with very little on offer by way of tourist attractions. Our intention was only to stay a night to break-up the northbound journey and to take a pause from the endless bus trips around the Andes mountains.

Traveler Een Colombiaanse huisarts had misschien gekund, maar heb ik niet gedaan. Alleen wat Paracetamol en Vitamine C gehaald... Het ziek zijn is overigens al wel voorbij! Ik loop een week achter, dus dit was van een week geleden, beetje onduidelijk... Maar het heeft nog lang nagesudderd 😖
