Costa Rica Jungle Cruise

The canal we explored on our jungle cruise in Costa Rica was lush and full of life. The brackish water was brown because it’s fed by mountain streams and it’s been raining.

We saw so many trees: almond, carob, ylang ylang, mango, and more. Beautiful birds dabbled along the water’s edge. I was especially thrilled to see a flock of toucans.

We saw a mother crocodile nestled in the weeds with her baby, but the biggest thrill was seeing sloths snoozing in the trees.

Our guide told us sloths only poop once a week, and that they come to the ground for this. If they plan to stay in the same tree, they bury their scat like a cat. This is to keep from advertising their whereabouts to predators.

If they plan to move to a new tree, they leave their feces uncovered as a way to mislead predators.

Who knew there was so much strategy to this!Read more

Cacao Plant

To me, the inside of cacao fruit looks a bit like intestines. The slippery white seeds are pink. They turn brown after they are dried.

How did people figure out how to create such delectable treats from such a slimy thing?

Somehow we made it back to the ship without buying any chocolate. I think we were melting from the humidity and simply forgot.Read more

Day 6
Ziplining in Verugua Rainforest

From the canals, we headed up the mountains and in to the rainforest, causing our bus a bit of trouble as we ascended some of the steeper hills. Waivers signed, kit donned and safety briefs completed, we headed to the first platform. Ben was first up of the whole group and flew off the first platform towards the second of twelve, rolling high above and within the rainforest canopy. We did keep an eye out for wildlife, although as we advanced through the zip wires the increasing speed made this more of a challenge. However just off the second platform, we were treated to the sight if some howler monkeys in the treetops...and their noise accompanied us most of the way around too! It was an absolutely cracking experience and well worth signing up for.

As we were first up, we were also first down. Whilst we sat and waited in the cafe for the rest of the group, the rainforest truly earnt its name - the heavens opened and the rain poured...and those still ziplining got very, very wet!Read more

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

Nach einem Seetag entlang der Küste Nicaraguas haben wir heute Morgen in Costa Rica angelegt.
Nach dem Frühstück ging es auf auf eine Flußfahrt durch den Regenwald. War wirklich interessant dirses Dickicht zu erleben und darin, Reiher, Krokodile, Faultiere und Brüllaffen zu entdecken. Wie es sich für Regenwald auch gehört , regnete es zwischendurch auch immer wieder: Ähnlich, wie wir das in Bremen gewohnt sind: als feiner Niesel. Nur eben bei 24 Grad.
Am Nachmittag werden wir wohl an Bord bleiben, uns durch die Essensabgabestellen zwingen und bei einem Cocktail Bücher lesen. Das haben wir gestern schon geübt und wissen wie das ist.
Morgen ist dann Heiligabend vor Panama. Ein
seltsames Gefühl-ich werde berichten.Read more

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio is home to one of the most visited national parks in Costa Rica. We spent four night here in a lovely nature resort. The resort was the best part of our stay. It had lots of trails in the backyard, home to iguanas, toucans and tiki monkeys. We were lucky to see all of these animals at the hotel. There are only around 1000 tiki monkeys left - I think we got to see around 20!

During our time here, we also visited the national park. It was extremely hot and humid and rather busy. None the less, we still managed to see monkeys and sloths. The National park borders the beach, so after our hike we jumped into the water which was lovely and warm.

The rest of our time at Manuel Antonio was spent around the pool and in our villa. Lucky for us, we were upgraded to a two bedroom apartment, which gave Alex the chance to do some cooking.Read more

Weg nach Tortuguero

Wir wurden mit einem Shuttle am Hotel abgeholt und nach ca. 1std Fahrt an einem kleinen Boots Anleger abgesetzt. Nach etwas Wartezeit wurden wir von einem kleinen Boot eingesammelt und sind über den Fluss nach Tortuguero.

Wir sollten zu Beginn die Schwimmwesten anziehen, nachdem wir eine Polizeistation passiert haben konnten wir sie wieder ausziehen 🙈

Die Tour war lang, aber wunderschön ♡
Ich finde es immer noch unfassbar wie grün die Natur hier ist ♡♡Read more
