    Slea Head Drive

    April 22 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

This was our scenic Dingle drive—Slea Head—and it didn’t disappoint. We had a bit of everything: some sunshine, some rain, and definitely lots of wind.

There were a few naps and some Nintendo Switch time during the drive, but Simon and I were soaking in every minute of it.

We landed in Dingle for lunch at John Benny’s Pub. The kids went all in with massive cheeseburgers, Simon had the fish, and I treated myself to mussels—so good.

Along the way, we made several stops to take in the views and explore different spots. Just taking it all in and enjoying the road as it came.

Now we’re back at our little place in Waterville for the night. Tomorrow, it’s back to Glencar.

    Dingle and Slea Head Drive

    September 21, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Today was a non golf day and we did a bus trip to Dingle and did the Slea Head Drive. Ireland has 4 fingers that stick out on the south west coast and originally we were scheduled for the Ring of Kerry a much longer drive but the group complained that it has been to much so they opted for the Slea Head Drive a much shorter trip.

This area has mountains ( small compared to Alberta ) which are scenic and used for grazing sheep and cattle.

The drive was very scenic and once again very narrow. We stopped at a house settlement that dates back to 3200BC.

Our driver knew a farmer so he called ahead and for he did a demonstration of his border collie sheep dog herding the sheep. He has a good sideline gig as he charges to see the demonstration . Since our driver knew him, the farmer gave him a bottle of his moonshine which was pretty good , clears the sinuses really good (70-80 proof )

The coast line is very rugged and is used for movie sets including Star Wars The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
Just before noon we stopped at a local pub which is the furthest most western bar in all of Europe . Never to early for an Irish coffee and a Smithwicks beer .

We arrived in Dingle about 1:45. Dingle is famous for its Irish Crystal and ice cream.
The proprietary of Dingle Crystal use to work for Waterford crystal but they moved their production off shore so he set up his own shop and continues the tradition of making beautiful hand crafted pieces. The production facility was closed as it is Saturday but the retail store was beautiful inside with many stunning pieces .
After lunch we stopped for ice cream at Murphys which started the famous ice cream in this area.

    6.Etappe Cues-Calaghane

    July 29, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

    Dunmore Head

    July 22, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

    Anfahrt Dingle

    July 21, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

    Dunmore Head abends

    May 24, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

.... Weil es so schön war. 10,7 KM heute..
    25.5.24:

    Windy morning!

    September 27, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Well the storm hit at about 0600 this morning but we were tucked away behind the big hedge so were fine and just had to sit it out. So we finally had time to try and answer a question that had been bothering me for a few days-
Can you cook a pizza in a frying pan?
Answer - Yes you can and it's great!

Once we'd eaten the pizza and planned our next few days, the wind began to die down a little and so we ventured out in the van back to Dingle. The mission today was to buy a bottle of Dingle beer for Barrie of Ennerdale brewery (I owe him a favour or two). He'd last been to Dingle years ago, loved the place and thought a bottle of Dingle beer might transport him back there. So we set out to find a Brewery/pub in Dingle. We found one a few miles outside Dingle town and I told the barman about my good friend Barry, his brewery and his hankering after a bottle of Dingle beer. Unbeknown to Barrie we'd brought a bottle of Ennerdale Blonde with us to Ireland and I presented it to the barman. He was chuffed and presented us with a bottle of one of their beers to take back to Barrie.
Job done and I'm sure Barrie will be touched.
It was a great quirky pub with crazy stuff all over the place. We loved it and stayed for a pint.
We also tracked down a couple of other pubs Barrie had mentioned but couldn't name. One was as pub and a shoe shop (bar and taps on one side of the room and an old fashioned shoe shop on the other). The other was a pub come Hardware shop!
The atmosphere in both was amazing but we couldn't stop as they were both packed with people 😔.
Oh we also found out that Tom, the campsite owner, has relatives (grandmother , grandfather and mother) that lived on Blasket island and he was full of tales of island life. He gave us a much grimmer view of living on the island and passed on his recommendation for the best book to read to get a true idea of the day to day reality of island life, which we managed to pick up a copy of in Dingle 😊.

Dingle day 2 - various locations

    September 26, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

Sea, mountains and sky. Waves, cliffs and clouds. Sunshine, rain, wind and Star Wars. Fantastic day today following the Slea Head Drive around the peninsula plus a quick sprint up to the view point on the Conor pass. Tip from a local - Go up and down to the viewpoint from the Dingle side as it's the opposite side that causes all the 'issues' for people. What a view! Also a great visit the the Blasket islands visitors centre. Fascinating and sad. All polished off with a bag of chips sat overlooking Dingle harbour. Chips 3/5 😔Read more
