Rome - the Eternal city

Day 1. An overnight flight, a train ride and a walk down the streets of Rome. A quaint hotel, a cafe con latte and croissant, beautiful narrow streets with sweet, clean water fountains. Lunch at a pizzeria and then on to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and the Imperial Fora. 40 hours and 2 hours of sleep later, dinner of REAL pasta and off to bed. Day 34
Farewell to the Eternal City

Time to bid farewell to the Eternal City (for now) 🤌

After popping in to a few baroque masterpieces we headed off to the Trevi fountain and twin basilicas of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto.

The origin of the two churches traces back to the 17th-century restoration of what was the main entrance to the Middle Ages and Renaissance Rome. Pope Alexander VII commissioned the monumental design to architect Carlo Rainaldi. Though the churches at first appear identical there are in fact major differences. Rainaldi was able to create one of the grandest gateways to the city, despite the plots of land for the two buildings varying significantly in proportions (as can be seen from the un-identical domes which are hexagonal and octagonal respectively). In the centre of the square stands Rome’s oldest obelisk, on of thirteen in the city.

We bid farewell to Rome as the sun did, from the top of the Spanish steps.

Siena

A few shots around the neighbouring winery before we head to Siena. I won't lie, it is hilly and we now always check the parking situation before heading out!
What a beautiful city and the main square is phenomenal. They run horse races here twice per year. Must be an amazing spectacle and packed with tourists of course. Richard managed to wrangle a ticket to climb the tower even tho the groups were fully booked. We found a lovely courtyard (painted ceilings) for a quiet little glass of vino. Quite getting used to the slower pace of life!
Headed back to Bucine as it is time to check in at the villa. So exciting and what a spectacular place. Built 17th century and used as a hunting lodge for nobility from Florence. Beautiful and so romantic.
Even more thrilling .... The pool is salt water and open for Dippers,!
Lovely family evening as 13 of us sat down to enjoy pasta dish cooked by Talia and just one or two bottles opened.....

Der Flug ins Glück

Wir sind da. Zusammen. Am Meer.
Erleichterung. Glückseligkeit. Ausgelassenheit.
Tränen der Freude.

Das erste Bild war mein erster Blick an den Strand und ich lief mit Tränen in den Augen dem salzigen Wind entgegen zu meiner Familie. Ein tiefer Seufzer entfleucht mir; die Anspannung des Tages und der letzten Wochen fällt spürbar ab. Genau dafür machen wir es. Raus ans Meer, raus in die Natur. An nichts denken müssen außer Sprit, Einkauf und Schlafplatz. Sein, einfach sein.
Und damit fangen wir genau jetzt an und wir spüren es beide.. Das sagen mir Davids Blicke, wenn er spielend mit den Kindern zu mir rüber schaut. Wir kommen jetzt erstmal an und erholen uns etwas. Wenn wir Kraft getankt haben, erkunden wir Rom.

Den Flug haben wir drei gut überstanden. Die Kinder hatten Freude und haben gut mitgemacht. Frieda wäre auf dem Weg zum Flughafen schon fast eingeschlafen. Da war sie um 12.30 Uhr zum Start ein bisschen drüber, wollte nicht angeschnallt sein und hat es dann irgendwann alleine in den Schlaf geschafft. Zum Glück. Janosch wirkte wie ein Vielflieger und hat alles ganz selbstverständlich mitgemacht. Ein Träumchen.Read more

Ciao bella

Die eine Woche verging mal wieder wie im Flug und daher heißt es heute schon wieder Ciao Bella.
Vom Flughafen Rom Fiumcino geht es zurück nach Hamburg.

Und zu jedem Urlaub gehört natürlich auch immer ein kleiner Rückblick.
Rom, die italienische Küche mit ihrem herrlichen Gelato, köstlicher Napoli-Pizza, leckerstem Foccacia und Bruschetta, die Amalfiküste und das Wetter waren einfach nur schön! Dieses Land platzt einfach vor Kultur und Kulinarik.
Ebenso platzten die Städte und Sehenswürdigkeiten aber auch vor Touristen und Menschenmassen! Das haben wir in unseren letzten Urlauben, egal wo in Europa, aber leider immer wieder feststellen müssen.

Überrascht waren wir leider von dem vielen Müll an Straßen und in den Städten abseits der Touristenmassen aber auch von der teilweise sehr veralteten und heruntergekommenen Infrastruktur. Von den vielen Bauruinen ganz zu schweigen.

Nichtsdestotrotz ist Italien und gerade Rom ein absolutes Muss und obwohl wir kein Geld in den Trevibrunnen geworfen haben, kommen wir ja vielleicht nochmal wieder.Read more

Leaving home in the middle of the night meant a quiet run to Birmingham airport. We seem to have hit stag party season though, surrounded by multiple groups of them as we waited for the flight. It was interesting to see our ship as we flew over Civitacecchia.

We flew through customs, which might account for why we had to wait nearly an hour for our luggage to arrive. But Princess had sorted our transfer top so we threw our luggage in a lorry, hopped on a bus, and drove north up the coast to Civitacecchia.Read more

Ankunft in Rom

Wir sind gut in Rom angekommen und warten jetzt auf den Bus, der uns nach Roma Termini ins Zentrum bringt ☺️
Die Fahrt ging 45 Minuten durch die wunderschöne sattgrüne Umgebung vor Rom.
Jetzt sind wir ins Hostel gewatschelt und haben beim Italiener Giorgio eingecheckt 😌
Das Hostel hat uns auf jeden Fall sehr überzeugt 😍Read more

When life gives you lemons go to Turkey!

Well, my trip has hit a glitch, but I am rolling with it. I got to the airport almost 3 hrs early and missed my flight. I read the screen wrong, waited at the wrong gate for 2 hours and did not hear my name being called. I will NEVER bitch about loud announcements in airports again! I remembered my sis Shel's advice to take a deep breath when stressed because there is always a way to fix a problem. So, after trying to rebook with British Air...(20,000 euros for a flight) 😳 good ole Google flights took me to Turkish Air. For (Only!) 500 euros I am going to Istanbul tonight and OHare tomorrow and will STILL make my Decatur flight! So, bright side...another new country and continent for me! And can I say it? Nach langem Warten am FCO konnten wir endlich das Flugzeug besteigen, das uns nach Hause bringen sollte. Natürlich haben wir uns an Board ordentlich angeschnallt! Es gab auch wieder ein leckeres Menü, trotz abgekürztem Service wegen heftiger Turbulenzen.
Dann hatte uns Malta wieder und es war am nächsten Tag auch gleich wieder angenehm frühlingshaft.Read more

Arrived at Rome-Fiumicino, trying to get into town. The further south in Italy, the less organized. Train seems the best option. 14 € for the "high speed" variant, "first class". Sardonic quotation marks.

Loudspeakers blaring "cancellazione treno" on repeat. The english announcement reminiscent of Microsoft Sam from the 90s (for Gen Z: one of the first attempts at computerized text to voice).
