    Todays agenda didn’t quite go as planned but probably in the best way possible. The original plan for today was to travel to a small mountain village and then take two cable cars up near Mount Zao and then hike for the last hour to reach Okama which is a volcano with a crater and a caldera in that looked really beautiful!

    So we got up at the crack of dawn in order to catch the 7.45am bus that got us there at 10am so we would have plenty of time to explore.

    Finding the cable car station we were chuffed to find it empty! Thinking we would have all the views to ourselves and that we had done really well to avoid the crowds we eagerly headed up towards the summit. After stepping off the second cable car at 1,700 metres high we realised why we were the only ones here. Thick cloud covered the mountainside and you couldn’t see more than 20 metres in front of you. Not letting this deter us we began the trail still keen to give it a go until the trail disappeared under a hill of snow. Now the website had said that the hiking trail would be opened around the middle of April so we thought we would be able to do it, however I think a live update would have been helpful! The wind whipping around us we tied bandanas around our noses to try keep some heat in. Trying to explore what we could we soon realised it was a bit of a lost cause. It was very cool to be up there in such an eerie atmosphere but not what we came to see and do!

    Feeling slightly disheartened we headed back down the cable cars and just began exploring the little mountain village which is a onsen town. This basically means there is loads of natural hot spring bath houses that you can visit. I’ve been putting off going into these as you bathe naked which neither Jacob or I found an appealing experience with a bunch of other people! This was until we came across this tiny little onsen, curious I went to have a little look and the ladies hot spring was completely empty and Jacob checked the men’s which was also empty. Feeling like this was our best opportunity we both went into the hot springs and it was soooooo nice. I got my own little private hot spring to wallow in which was actually incredibly hot- almost too hot! It was lovely and I’m so happy that we got to do it as I really wanted to but I didn’t want to go in naked with lots of strangers!

    After enjoying our private hot springs we met up outside and headed to catch the bus back. So not the day we had envisioned and it was a shame we weren’t able to see the volcano but it worked out pretty well in the end with quite a special onsen experience!    Read more

    schneemonster

    ich habe nochnie soviel schnee gesehen.

    nach einem nachtbus und zwei weiteren bussen erreichten wir zao früh am morgen.

    all die strapazen um einmal mit den ski auf japanischem schnee zu fahren. und heute war einer der besten skitage die ich jemals hatte.
    gute ausrüstung, schönes wetter, leere pisten, griffiger schnee und angenehme temperaturen.

    das skigebiet hat keine grindelwald grösse und trotzdem genug pistenkilometer um spass zu haben. inkl paar schwarzen pisten und funpark.

    zuoberst gabs dann noch das highlight: schneemonster. bäume die komplett voller schnee sind und wie eisige kreaturen aussehen.

    besonders fremd waren uns die lifte. oder jedenfalls wie man diese benutzt. es gibt nähmlich keine bügel. das heisst, wir sassen auf den sitzen und hätten jeden moment herunterfallen können.

    nach den skifahrtagen blieben wir noch einen tag um das örtliche sake museum zu besuchen sowie unsere eigenen kokeshi zu bemalen. natürlich statteten wir auch hier den onsen einen besuch ab.
    obwohl diese zumteil nach schwefel aka gefaulte eier riechen.

    unser gasthaus wird von einem paar mit 3 jähriger tochter geführt. ihre weltoffenheit und die vielen interessanten gespräche mit ihnen machen unseren aufenthalt besonders. einer meiner liebsten unterkünfte bisher.    Read more

    Wandeling door het Zao gebergte

    We hoefden vanochtend maar een half uurtje in de auto te zitten om naar onze bestemming Zao Onsen te komen. Hier konden we met een skilift een start maken om het Zao gebergte op te komen.

    Wederom ietwat valsspelen, maar 1.841m omhoog wandelen in deze temperaturen gaat ietwat te ver deze vakantie.

    We hebben zo'n 5 á 6 uur rondgelopen in het gebergte en zijn een aantal toppen opgelopen, de hoogste 1.841m. Voordeel van de hoogte is dat het aanzienlijk koeler is. Bovenop was het iets van 22 graden i.p.v. de 34 graden beneden. Er stond wel een klap wind, dus petjes vasthouden!

    Eén van de doelen was het bezichtigen van de Okama krater. Dat was de wandeling ook zeker waard, een mooi uitzicht. Bijzondere kleur water om zo te zien. Blijkbaar kan het meer 5 verschillende kleuren hebben, afhankelijk van de temperatuur.

    Uiteindelijk zijn we uiteraard weer naar beneden gegaan om rustig aan iets te eten te zoeken en verder rustig aan te doen.    Read more

    Zao Onsen

    We took the Shinkansen with Elli's mum and dad up to Yamagata and picked up a hire car ("the cube") for our next, much more rural bit of exploring and calming down from Tokyo chaos. A very big contrast!

    We stayed in a little ski chalet in the woods with its own spring fed bath (with warnings of nearby bears, although to our great disappointment we didn't see any).

    Proved an excellent base for a few days exploring the area, including a hike up the nearby volcano and to the impressively/revoltingly eggy town at Zao Onsen as well as a few days of sitting inside while it rained through a gloriously green forest and drinking sake in the bath.    Read more

    Zao and the Snow Monsters

    Drove straight up 3 hours, after riding yesterday to make it to Zao with a predicting 15cm plus of super fresh stuff coming in, plus to ride through the 'Snow Monsters' on one of the highest mountains via cable car in Japan.

    Snow monsters are what they call the trees up there as they get drenched in snow through freeze and thaw cycles, and eventually look almost overwhelmed with the weight of snow stuck to then into summer.

    Had a bit of an issue getting up the hill in the two wheel van, but in its last official run with me, it's done well too this point.

    The views were there in patches between the clouds, with amazing tree runs and insane powder everywhere. A very steep mountain at times, but also loaded with lots of flat spots too, really keep your speed 😂    Read more

    Zao onsen

    Unser letzter großer Ausflug in Japan führte uns nach Zao onsen. Dort angekommen sind wir mit einer Seilbahn auf einen Berg gefahren und von dort zu einem Kratersee gewandert. Leider war es sehr bewölkt und wir in den Wolken, sodass nur zeitweise ein kleiner Teil des Sees zu sehen war.Read more

    hot n‘ cold

    Schnee so weit das Auge reicht...?
    Dem war leider nicht so. Auch wenn es bei meiner Ankunft geschneit hat, liegt leider nicht so viel Schnee wie erwartet. Als ich aus dem Bus ausgestiegen bin tog es mir kräftig um die Ohren. Dick eingepackt mit Schal und Mütze erkundigte ich das kleine Ski Örtchen Zao.
    Hier Stinkt es. ( Chli stinke mues es!). Es roch nach faulen Eiern und Schwefel. Der Bach, welcher mitten durch das Dörfchen floss, hatte gelbe Ablagerungen. Kein Zweifel das war Schwefel.
    Ich machte mich auf Erkundungstour. Stufe um Stufe nahm ich nach oben. Festgeklammert am Geländer da es Stufen nich wirklich gab, diese waren mit Schnee und Eis bedeckt. Oben angekommen sah ich eine alten Sessellift welcher zum Ski Gebiet führte. Quer über die Skipiste gelaufen stolperte ich in den Gebäudekomplex welcher nach einer Talstation aussah. Ich ging herein und sah eine kleinen Sportladen welcher Ski vermietet. Das Wetter war jedoch zu schlecht um Ski fahren zu gehen. Also brach ich im vollen Schneesturm auf um ein Onsen (japanisch für heisse Quelle) zu finden. Per Zufall entdeckte ich nach wenigen Minuten ein Bad, welches sogar ein Aussenbereich hatte. Ich ging herein bezahlte 500 ¥ (umgerechnet 6.-) und genoss splitter Nackt die Terme in mitten des Schneesturms. Es war herrlich. Wie neu geboren machte ich mich auf die Suche nach was Essbarem. Gefunden habe ich ein kleines Restaurant direkt neben der Busstation. Ich trat ein und sah ca. 10 ältere Japaner welche einen Riesen Spass hatten beim Tischgrill. Kurzerhand bestellte ich auch so einen und Grillte darauf mein Fleisch, Gemüse und was sonst auch immer. Da ich halt mit meinen blonden Haaren und dem nicht japanischen Aussehen sofort auffiel, kam einer und erklärte mir, mittels Handzeichen wie ich es Essen, Braten und Tippen soll. Sie hatten gefallen an mir gehabt. Deshalb gab ich ihnen, sobald sie fertig gegessen haben echte Schwiizerschoggi, welche ich im Dutyfree in Zürich gekauft habe. Genau für solche fälle. Sie bedankten sich und gaben mir darauf auch Süssigkeiten. Ein mega Pack Mandelguetzli mit Schokolade. Als ich bezahlte und ging hatte ich noch gut 2 Stunden bis der Bus Richtung Sendai ablegte.
    Was nun?
    Ich entschied mich noch einmal in ein Onsen zu gehen. Eines der vielen Öffentlichen Bäder verteilt im ganzen Dorf. Ich zahlte 100 yen und ging rein.
    Scheisse wär das heiss! Ich konnte nicht mit dem ganzen Körper rein da es schlicht weg zu heiss war. Mein Körper begann sich rot zu verfärben wegen der Hitze. Nach gerade mal 30‘ musste ich raus. Umgezogen und ein bisschen benommen von der wärme hatte ich immer noch gut eine Stunde bis der Bus fuhr. Leider hatte nichts auf, respektive gab es kein Cafe oder Teehaus also entschied ich mich zur Busstation zu gehen um dot zu warten. Alls dann endlich der Bus einfuhr und ich eingestiegen bin, nickte ich gleich weg.

    Week-end trip: Zaō fox village

    Deux heures de voiture plus tard, nous voici dans la ville de Zaō (préfecture de Miyagi), au "Zaō kitsune mura" (ざおうきつねむら). "kitsune" (狐 きつね) et "mura" (村 むら) signifiant respectivement "renard" et "village", je vous laisse déduire de quoi il s'agit. 🦊🦊

    Pour ne rien vous cacher, notre arrivée dans ce village nous a tous fait un drôle d'effet, car la 1ere zone que l'on traverse a une atmosphère extrêmement triste...
    Les premiers renards que l'on a vu étaient maigres, blessés, ou affaiblis, et même si le staff et les panneaux indiquaient que c'était parce qu'ils y recevaient des soins, ça faisait peine à voir 🥺
    De plus, les photos y étaient interdites, c'est quand même bizarre de vouloir cacher cela ... 😔

    Passé cette première zone, nous avons été rassurés de voir que la grande majorité des renards étaient en très bonne santé, et se déplaçaient librement dans une zone plutôt grande et bien entretenue. J'ai pu approcher de nombreux renards de près, certains étaient très drôles et bavardaient en faisant des bruits similaires à des poulets !🐓

    D'autres dormaient tranquillement, enroulés sur eux-même.
    C'était la première fois que je voyais des renards aux coloris si variés: orange à queue noire, blanc, noir et autres variantes.
    Attention les renards sont des animaux sauvages, mieux vaut ne pas approcher ses doigts ! J'en ai même vu un qui poursuivait mon ami pour lui mordiller les chaussures 😂

    Also, photos were forbidden there, it's kinda weird to to hide this if the reasons behind are to help them ... 😔

    Once we left that first area, we were reassured to see that the vast majority of foxes were in very good health, and could freely behave in a rather large and well maintained area. I was able to see from really close several foxes, some of them were very funny and some were kind of having a chat together making noises similar to chickens !"🐓

    Others were quietly sleeping, rolled up on their own body.
    It was the first time I got to see foxes with such a variety of colors: orange with black tail, white, black and other variations.
    But don't be careless: foxes are still wild animals, it is better not to approach your fingers ! One of them was chasing my friend to nibble his shoes 😂

    「山寺」を出かけて、私たちは2時間ぐらい運転してから宮城県の「蔵王狐村 (ざおうきつねむら)」に着いた 🦊
    蔵王狐村という場所は、あまり村ではなく、小さい動物園みたい。
    悲しいけど、第一印象は良くなっかたよ 😔
    最初のエリアには、調子が悪い狐がしかいないんだもん。狐は全部で１５匹ぐらいがあって、悲しそうな顔がしているんだ 🥺
    掲示には「その狐を直してます」が書いてあるのに、なんか、変な感じがするんだ…

    幸いに、次のエリアには狐がもっと元気だったよ。最初のエリアより、狐が沢山いた。🦊🦊🦊
    狐たちは、走ったり、寝たり、喋ったりした。そのエリアはもっと広いから、少し安心した 😌
