    Laredo

    Today is supposed to be sunny - finally!
    Additionally, my trail started directly along the coast on a beautiful promenade. 🩷

    Also, I ran into a Spanish journalist who was trying to take a selfie (and I was trying as well in the same moment). So we ended up taking pictures of each other and talking a lot (in Spanish 🩷) and exchanging contacts.
    She is such a lovely and warm person- I liked her from the very first moment!

    Day 8

    Go hard or go home!

    I already mentioned that I want to go beyond my limits but did not really expect this to happen in my first week. 😅
    My hiking buddy has the ambitious target to reach Santander by Monday since he will fly home that day again. In the morning we were still laughing, thinking that the almost 50km are far from reality.
    Well, as you can see, we made it and honestly I was not only physically exhausted but also I felt that my brain was really slow after that immense workout.

    Finally, we found a good and cheap sleeping spot in a monastry. I even have the luxury of sharing a 2-bed room with a girl from my hometown Halle 🙂    Read more

    Day 11

    Castro-Urdiales to Laredo

    Our day started out in the dark with a light rain, but the rain didn't last and the day was beautiful. The views made up for yesterday. Part way through the day, we took the official route, which routed us up into the hills and away from the coast. The alternate route followed the highway and was the shortest distance to Laredo. We were only going 15 miles to Liendo, so we were glad to be away from the highway and other pilgrims. When we arrived there, it was only 1:30 and there was nothing to do the rest of the day since it was a small village. We both felt fine, so we continued on, planning to take a shortcut ("only in good weather") to Laredo. We figured 19 miles total. Instead it was 20.7, factoring in the trouble we had in the city getting to our hotel. By the time we arrived, I had cramps up the backs of both my legs, from calves to thighs. I am in pain, so we'll wait until morning to decide how far to go. I think we'll sleep in.

    Day 10 CastroUndiales to Laredo 220.9 km

    Had a great sleep. Left later than usual 7:00am

    Very nice beginning to the day but starting at 20 C is tough.

    As you can see the scenery is stunning. However I thought I could handle the distance but the heat made it extremely challenging.

    I was fine until Liendo. As you can see looking at the map there are tons of alternative routes. I thought the one I chose was the shortest.....30 km later😱

    But the big roadblock was that MY PHONE DIED !!!!

    Yup. I know it overheated....battery fried!

    So I had no way to navigate my way when I arrived at Laredo.
    I had no address or phone number of the place. Luckily I remembered its name.

    I looked at a map at the Church of Santa Maria run by 2 Nuns in habits. But trying to find the signage on buildings is tricky. 2 people told me to go the Policia for help.

    By some miracle I found the place.....it was 530 at night!!!

    Then I was sooooo fortunate to find a phone place (same company that I bought my SIM card from) and bought a NEW PHONE

    I am the proud owner of a Samsung Galaxy A14 5G😂
    The lady spoke excellent English. I was also able to go to a shop to get the screen protector and case.

    Endlose Strände

    In Laredo macht es wenig Sinn, extra früh aufzustehen, da das erste Boot nach Santoña erst um 9 Uhr übersetzt. (Die Alternative wäre ein beträchtlicher Umweg über Land.) Also machen Christoph und ich uns erst gegen 8 Uhr auf den Weg ans andere Ende der ca. 5km langen Stadt.
    Einen Bootsanleger sucht man dort vergeblich, stattdessen wirft die kleine Fähre ihren Steg einfach am Strand aus. Als wir gerade hinter ein paar anderen Pilgern aus Amerika, Neuseeland, Deutschland und Belgien einsteigen wollen, kommt ein Mann mit seinem Fahrrad über den Strand gehastet.
    Es ist schon wieder Raimund Joos. Auf seiner Mission, seinen Reiseführer (oder, wie er es nennt, sein Buch) zu aktualisieren, hat er es gestern trotz E-Bike nicht weiter als bis Laredo geschafft. Und diesmal hat er einen Auftrag für uns, oder eigentlich für Christoph: er soll ihm von einem bestimmten Abschnitt, der für ihn mit dem Fahrrad nicht passierbar ist, Fotos schicken, damit er sich ein Bild von den Wegverhältnissen machen kann.
    Wenig später begegne ich Raimund noch zweimal. Christoph kommt seiner Bitte natürlich nach und schickt ihm später die Fotos. Jetzt hat er einen gratis Reiseführer gut! Ich ziehe ihn ab sofort regelmäßig damit auf, dass er Raimund Joos' persönlicher Assistent ist.

    Anfangs sind uns herrliche Blicke über die Sandstrände des hiesigen Küstenabschnitts vergönnt und auf dem Weg nach Noja wandern wir sogar lange über einen davon. Die zweite Hälfte des Tages ist dann ziemlich langweilig: immer gleiche Straßen führen uns durchs Hinterland und die Kilometer ziehen und ziehen sich.
    Am späten Nachmittag erreichen wir endlich die bekannte Herberge in Güemes, La Cabaña del Abuelo Peuto. Es ist eine schöne Herberge, aber irgendwie rankt sich das Gerücht darum, dass es sich auch hier beinahe um sowas wie einen Kult handelt. Zumindest versucht diesmal keiner, uns zu rekrutieren.     Heute bereits um 7 Uhr gestartet, ohne Regen, aber wolkenverhangen bis Liendo, dann sollte es hoch in die Berge gehen nahe der Küste. Das war megacool, der Ausblick ein Erlebnis und dann wieder runter nach Laredo. Kurz bevor der Sturzregen einsetzte erreichte ich noch ein Kloster, indem ich auch ein Bett bekam.Read more

    Arrivé à Laredo, j'ai visité l'église Santa Maria. Puis une petite pause café / pain au chocolat / tortilla aux pommes de terre.
    Et au moment de repartir, plouf, il se met à pleuvoir dru. J'ai bu un 2e café ailleurs, puis traîné dans les boutiques une heure le temps que ça se calme... 😊Read more

    Laredo

    After a little bit of a night out, we went to a tribute to Queen band which very Spanish started at 23:30 (review: musicians were great, singer not so much), we left a bit later in the day to go to Laredo. Our WoL friends have unfortunately been stuck in Laredo due to a problem with their engine (looks like there is a solution now that we write this), but it also means we get to catch up.

    The sail itself is quite a tricky one. We are going against the waves, which are very short here, with not a lot of wind. In other words it is a very choppy situation and it makes me quite nauseous. Bart doesn't seem to be bothered at all. As we sail towards Laredo we slowly leave Basque Country behind us. We have absolutely loved our time here and can absolutely recommend going here sometime.     Albergue Casa de la Trinidad

    Ein magischer Ort mit soviel Gastfreundschaft und Verständnis! Wir kamen hier an und wurden ganz herzlich willkommen. Zum Abend hin konnte jeder etwas zu essen abgeben, aus dem die Nonnen für uns ein Abendessen gezaubert haben Dann gab es einen Gottesdienst mit Segnung der Pilger. Wir saßen seperat und das Licht wurde gedimmt. Die Nonnen haben für uns Musik gemacht und wir wurden jeder einzeln gesegnet. Gerade an einem Tag wie heute war das Seelenbalsam für mich. Danach haben wir uns zum Austausch und singen getroffen bevor wir zum gemeinsamen Abendessen gegangen sind. Endlich wieder frischen Salat. Obst und Gemüse. Das habe ich ihn der Tat etwas vermisst die letzte Tage!

    Laredo

    Heute war ein ganz bizarrer Tag. Von Frauen zwischen Mitte 20 und Mitte 60 habe ich erzählt bekommen, dass sie von einem Mann angesprochen wurden. Im Auto, der ihnen angeboten hat sie mit auf den Berg hochzunehmen und sie sind in der Tat eingestiegen! Dann hat er sie wohl unsittlich angefasst und sie sind wieder ausgestiegen und als ich in der Herberge ankam, hat mir Linda, mit der ich eine Weile schon laufe auch erzählt, dass er sie gefragt hat. Sie ist zum Glück nicht eingestiegen. Und dann haben wir noch in einer Kurve im Gebüsch ganz viel Gepäck gefunden. Ganz unterschiedliche Koffer auch einen Wanderrucksack mit Wanderschuhen, verschiedene Pässe, Kreditkarten und auch ein Personalausweis....von unterschiedlichen Leuten. Das haben wir dann auch der Polizei gemeldet und die Frau warnte uns, dass es hier auf diesem Camino gerade nicht so sicher sei. Daher bin ich froh, dass ich mit einem neuseeländischen Pärchen zusammengelaufen bin und immer wusste, dass sie entweder vor mir oder hinter mir sind und werde mich auch auf jeden Fall daran halten, die nächsten Strecken nicht alleine zu laufen. Ansonsten war der Weg relativ ereignisfrei, auch nicht ganz so schöne Aussichten, aber dennoch habe ich es bis nach Laredo geschafft. Und hier werde ich heute in einer Unterkunft schlafen, die von Nonnen organisiert wird. Es gibt später noch einen Gottesdienst, wo wir gesegnet werden und dann kochen die Nonnen uns ein gemeinsames Abendessens, aus Sachen, die die Wanderer als Lebensmittel so mitbringen.Read more
