      Chamonix Mont Blanc

      June 29, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

We drove from a very hot Cinque Terre to Chamonix which was a full 10 degrees cooler and overcast so we had little view of the Mountains. On the way we drove through numerous tunnels and the longest at the border to France just before our arrival. The tunnel is 10km long, the famous Mont Blanc tunnel. We were to spend the next few days with a work colleague of Anthony’s (Angele and partner Kevin) who have a stunning Alpine Chalet 5km outside Chamonix. They were the perfect hosts, pointed us in the direction of many things to see and do. We all went to several of their favourite restaurants and were introduced to the cuisine of the area (Savoyard).
Chamonix is a typical Alpine village catering to skiers, hikers , cyclists and mountaineers. Everyone was always dressed in their outdoor adventurous gear. There were outdoor shops galore. We had fun browsing on the one rather miserable day. We were able to enjoy some good mountain walks with incredible views when the clouds decided to disappear. We saw plenty of waterfalls, fast flowing rivers and mountains. One of the walks was to Mer du glacé (see of ice), which included an alpine train, cable car and 500 descending steps to get to the incredible ice cave which is part of the glacier which we viewed from above. We saw the markings of how the glacier has diminished in size, on average 3km per year. (New steps are added continuously).

The sun decided to make an appearance on Monday morning and we were spellbound by the incredible views surrounding us on every side. We caught the cable car (65 people per car) to the top of Aiguille du Midi (3800m). When we left Chamonix, there were still clouds above, but we travelled through the clouds and what a view was before us. The magnificent Aiguille du Midi and the ever impressive Mont Blanc surrounded by the many peaks of the French Alps. We saw many Alpinists heading off on their various climbing exhibitions, including those that were attempting the summit of Mont Blanc (the highest mountain in Europe, 4800m). There were views all around us and each one was as impressive as the last. Kevin was kind enough to come with us and be our guide. He has climbed most of these summits (including Mont Blanc), so we learnt a lot from an Alpinists perspective and didn’t have to guess at what we were looking at.

In the same afternoon we took another cable car the other side of Chamonix, to mountains looking onto Mont Blanc. We enjoyed watching the paraglides jump off the mountain right in front of us.

We were also lucky enough to visit an old friend who lives about an hour away. They spoilt us to a delicious lunch in their own restaurant .

I’m sure we will be back because once is definitely not enough …

      Chamonix

      April 27 in France ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

Shouka was where we had our moring fix . Coffee and cuppachino with croissants ... The smell of fresh ground coffee with a combination of dark chocolate will linger in my mind for a while as we witnessed the processes of melting chocolate and roasting coffee at Shouka !!! I decided to quit the idea of going up the mountain with the cable cart as I examined my condition of tinitius and vertigo, but took the tram train instead. Up and up with the tram train.. With the snow still melting on the mountains, it was an awesome site on the mountains. I went one step down by cable cart once on top and enjoyed watching the active guys skiing⛷️...I never went there as I can't bearly walk straight, let alone skiing!..On the way up again to the mountain top on the cable cart being alone I chanted my mantras!!! On the way down to the valley of Chamonix I felt the cold spring breeze.....Read more

      Zermatt to Chamonix Mount Blanc

      April 25 in France ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

When I opened the window curtains this morning, I was delighted to see the rays of the sun on the mountain picks . The snow was now melting, but unfortunately, we were moving on to greener pastures....or so I believe.! We were at Zeermatt station early, and the 1st train to Chamonix was on time . Our ride to Visp station was only 1 hr 10 mins, which was the 1st change of train. From Visp to Martigny was only 41 mins. The next change was to Vallorcine, which was more of a tram train taking us to the mountain. UP and Up as we got off on the mountain and then boarded another tram train to Chamonix Mont Blanc ....Very scenic ride and different experience for us city dwellers.! Our 15 mins walk took forever and finally got to Le Refuge Hotel. ! ...Upon our arrival at the station, there was no taxis. !!! It is amazing how people live up in the mountains. Small community of people with a little church! The slopes are scary 😨 when you look down the mountain passes! No rain, and the snow was melting on the mountain peaks !!! What a breathtaking sight to Chamonix. ....Read more

      Chamonix day 2.

      July 18, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

2pm and just waiting for Allen to come in. Beer waiting in fridge.
Quite a warm muggy day. Feels like thunderstorm weather.
Been a tourist this morning. Did like the look of the meringues.
Also wondering about shouting Maree a paraglide for her birthday. See video.
Again very crowded and lots of English being spoken.
McDonald's very subtle. And icebreaker even here.

      Chamonix - Mont Blanc

      June 13, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Today we enjoyed a simply stunning drive into and through the French Alps, with our destination being Chamonix, where the 1924 winter Olympics were held.

On the drive we were very close to Switzerland and had some good views of Lake Geneva.

Chamonix lies beneath Mont-Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe, 4810m high. Mt. Kosciusko is only 2228m.

The Arve River runs through it and is fed by the glaciers of the Mont-Blanc valley, but mainly from the Mer de Glace (glacier).

When we arrived, Mont-Blanc was covered in clouds, so we abandoned plans to go up in the gondola to the Aguille du Midi, a viewpoint only 1000m lower, not that Debbie seemed overly disappointed. Instead, we went up in the train to the Mer de Glace, which gave us great views.

Spectacular is an understatement. We weren't leaving until 11:00am so we had plenty of time to walk around Chamonix and enjoy the sights.Read more

      La Cabane des Praz

      June 13, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

For dinner tonight, we drove into the nearby hills to the La Cabane des Praz, a log cabin restaurant with great views of the golf course and mountain peaks. The dinner was pretty good - you were given sauces and thin slices of duck, beef and chicken, which you cooked on a grill plate. Dessert was a creme broulee (of course) and I chose snails with garlic butter for entree. First time I had tried them and they were surprisingly good!Read more

      Chamonix, Day 3

      March 21, 2023 in France

Today, Andrew and I were very grumpy getting up. As Dad made breakfast, Andrew and I slowly got ready to ski. Mom wasn’t going, because she was traumatized from yesterday. We left the apartment at around 9:30. We were heading to Le Tour mountain to ski. We hopped on the gondola and skied the first mountain for the morning and part of the afternoon. Then, we stopped and ate lunch, pizza, pasta and salad. While we were there, birds kept begging people for food! Andrew gave them pizza crust and pasta, and they LOVED the pasta. After lunch, we took the gondola down and drove to another mountain, which was way harder. So far, there was no fog and it was sunny, perfect weather for sking. At this mountain, there was a racing course that timed you. Andrew wanted to do it, so we did. It was fun, because there was jumps and turns, Andrew loved it. Then, we skied down and got on a lift to do it again. This time, Andrew betted gelato on it, 3 scoops if he beat Dad and I’s time. For me, 2 scoops if I beat Dad, 3 if I beat Andrew. In the end, Andrew beat both of our times. In fact, he got better! As for me, I did not beat Dad or Andrew, but Dad said maybe to 2 scoops. We were all tired, so we started to go down the mountain, but we missed the turn to the gondola! We had to ski this hard red, Andrew took it like a champ, while Dad and I took our time. It was really hard, but we made it! Dad then said that I could get 2 scoops, maybe 3! After we got our skis in the car, we drove to a little bakery for a little snack, then we drove back to the apartment. We met up with Mom, and returned our skis, then headed to dinner. We had raclette, which was like fondue, but it was on the triangle of cheese, and it was heated by a charcoal mini oven. It was really cool. We ate it with bread, potatoes and charcuterie. As the cheese melted, you scraped it off with a big knife. It was yummy 😋. We also had beef bourguignon, Mom and Dad said they have made better at home. It tasted like dry briscuit to me. After dinner, we got gelato and crepes, and went to sleep.
      See you tomorrow, Renee
