      Week #1

      August 5, 2016 in France ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

First week (and two home exchanges) of our roadtrip is already behind us! 4 more weeks (and 5 more home exchanges) to go! Wow, so many things and places already behind us. And much more to come! We're so excited every time we see a new place and meet new people. So far, France didn't dissapoint us (and it's even more beautiful as in the pictures). We love the monuments, city vibes and historical buildings, but most of all, we love exploring the nature through the back roads. We're so glad we had a chance to take this trip. Experiences are priceless for sure!Read more

Day 1: Train to Paris, 28km

      July 2, 2016 in France ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

It started of being a beautiful day, sun shining and Michelle and i eager to start our adventure. The first train from the hague the Brussels was perfect and easy. We dismantled the bikes on the train and put them into the plastic bags/bike bags like I was told on the phone by customer service. Then everything went wrong. The second train was thalys to Paris. We arrived early and the train manager said no. Just no. No bikes and no English and no smile. I argued obviously since this is expensive and I triple checked that I can bring a bike on this train as long as it was In a bag, which we had. He finally said yes. So we spent the next 10 minutes frantically unpacking and dismantling our bikes, I put my bike in train, grab all our bags put them in our seat go out to help Michelle with her bike and the doors close. "What are you doing???" The train steward asked me as if I was retarded. I helping get the bike on the train.... it apparently had to go on the next train, I said no it's ready let's go! No no no. That was it. The doors were not going to be opening again until Paris. We were stuck there watching in disbelief as all our possessions and my bike sit at the station for another 30 seconds, then slide away.

After another lecture at us by the steward, who truly could not believe my stupidity, the helpful ones arrived. "Do you have your tickets? " no of course we didn't. But we were able to catch the next train to Paris which was 30 min later and they called the train manager. When we arrived In Paris i had to run to the previous train which was getting ready to go back to Brussels and all of our stuff was there, thank goodness! We spent ages just outside the station putting our bikes together properly.

Cycling through Paris is terrible, scary, not just from cars but also pedestrians. We made our way to the Eiffel tower and decided to treat ourselves for the first 3km of riding with an ice cream; only to find our shared wallet was empty. Michelle's was empty. And so was mine. Someone had robbed our bags while they sat in our seats. We had about 300 Euro in cash, mainly because NL does not accept visa or MasterCard.

We were obviously devastated! But kept going, we cycled for a total of 28km today to get to the warm showers host (couch surfing for cyclists! -although I still don't feel like one yet). We are with a lovely family just outside of Paris. They gave us dinner and route ideas.

Day 2: towards orleans. It can only better right?

      Bouldering - Parcour style!

      October 24, 2020 in France ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This is day to three in a row - so we figured that we wanted to take it easy - parkour instead of hard moves :-)

Turns out that the choice was great - and the blue 20-problem parcour in Rocher Guichot not too easy either. We started shortly after 12:00 midday and finished with the advent of dusk at 18:50 - what a day.

The boulders offered a nice variety with focus on slab climbing which we had not done a lot of in Bleau in this stay. So good practice with the up to 5c slabs :-)

We both were super hungry upon return, cooking Spaghetti Bolognese and spending the evening watching Babylon Berlin.

Power moves in Canche aux merciers

      October 28, 2020 in France ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Perfect conditions for bouldering today in Canche auf merciers 🤩 we started a tad bit later than planned but today the weather gods were positive and we climbed till the late afternoon without any rain drops.

We started with warming up in some easy problems and then found first a 6a ✅, then a 6b ✅ (see video for Anna :-)), then a 6b+ traverse with difficult top-out and Bertram even managed a 6c+ 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

Really happy, we came home, prepared some “emergency” snack 😅 and talked to Bertram’s parents which was really nice. And now: dinner with movies 📺

Let’s see what new announcements for possible lock-downs will be...

Boulder action in Rocher de la Reine

      October 23, 2020 in France ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Today, we had a lazy morning :-) we slept in to 09:00 after awaking to the 07:00 o’clock rain shower 🌧 . Then, we watched the Euraktiv discussion on Bertram’s co-authored “Systems change compass” - interesting and so proud :-)

Then we ventured into the Carrefour to stock up on some fresh ingredients before the weekend when likely more people would be out shopping. 👍🏼

Then, it was finally time to hit the road to the “Bois Rond” parking area from which we were going to reach the still unknown area of “Rocher de la Reine”. Anna had tirelessly researched a suitable spot following the extensive rain. The area proved awesome!

We started to warm up with an easy blue bolder and then started with the first “real” problem - “Baby Boum” (left variant) 6a+. After some difficulties initially, we found a good solution and both sent it! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

Then we wandered around with our sandwiches and found a lot of more nice looking, interesting problems! Bertram tried another 6b and got the to the top and Anna found a new “favorite problem” on a 6a+ overhang :-) need to come back soon!

At home, we had a good evening with a fast meal (leek-veggie minced meat-cream sauce with polenta) and an episode of Babylon!

      Projects, projects :-)

      October 26, 2020 in France ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We woke up early to gleaming sunlight - a perfect day to try our luck at Bois Rond with our multi-year project: “La Quille” (6b+).

We started immediately there to warm up and then were locked in for a good 1.5 hours. To our surprise, we found another solution (or did we really remember the solution from last time = 2 years ago well?!). Anyhow: Bertram did it! Anna is closer than ever 🙌🏻💪🏼😎

We went on from there in search of new projects and found “Obli-Yettes”, super nice 6b boulder from a cave to a slopery finish. Outcome was similar to the first: Bertram used Anna’s beta and did it after a few tries and Anna got soooooo close - but not quite 😅 a new project no. 2 ...

Happy and tired and with really thin skin on the finger tips we went home, cooked a nice gratin with champignons and pasta and ... well, watched Babylon Berlin 📺

      1. Tag am Fels - Parcours Rocher Guichot

      April 24, 2022 in France ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Danach geht’s zurück in unser Häuschen - Pilzlasagne kochen! Und vorher nochmal bei den Hühnern vorbeischauen: wieder 2 Eier 🥚 da wird wohl mal Omelette geben.

Last day in Fontainebleau, then lockdown

      October 29, 2020 in France ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Sadly, today was the last day - we just confirmed by looking at the details of the lockdown that indeed, it is the same as in March - 1 hour maximum of leaving the house for a maximum distance of 1 km... 😔 they does not make for any bouldering conditions...

But we did use the day well - we did 10 red Parcours boulders in Franchard Isatis and then worked on a really nice 6b - Side Show Bob - most of today’s pictures were taken in this problem.

We also met a really nice person to accompany us: Laurens from Belgium who actually just arrived today for a 10-day-stay - fingers crossed that he can still do something now🤞
