      Arrived in the lovely Lille suburbs

      Arrived in our lovely little Gites in Flequieres.
      Crossing under the sea was as seamless as usual and driving on the right has been remastered with only one petit faux pas! 🤭
      Raining in Dunkirk so didn't mooch but did take in the Museum dedicated to Operation Dynamo in WW2. Very thought provoking.
      Our first supermarche provisions shop had the usual ooooo, look at this, look at that, look at the price of wine, what the f#*k is that? Always a good experience, this time enhanced with the checkout girl reversing Kev back down the checkout ailse to a wider exit spot!
      And now we are relaxing with beer and wine, one of Kevs all time favourite beers I may add, Kwak.
      We're watching Argentina v Samoa in this sweet little Gite which reminds us both very much of our house in Spain...

      England 71 - 0 Chile

      Our first Rugby game off British soil.
      England fans friendly and in great spirits.
      The people of Lille welcomed us all and were so helpful.
      The Chileans were absolutely incredible. Sort of a shame we didn't get to see them celebrate any points.

      Wieder auf dem Festland

      Beim Warten auf die Fähre, habe ich einen netten Platz am Strand, südlich von Calais in Hardelot bei P4N gefunden. Ja, der Platz ist tatsächlich nicht schlecht, aber der Ort, naja. Ist im 2. Weltkrieg wohl ziemlich zerstört worden und in den 60ziger Jahren typisch aufgebaut worden. Bausünden das es kracht. Saison ist auch noch nicht, alles steht leer. Macht es auch nicht besser. Die Küste heißt hier Côte d'Opale, klingt ja nicht so schlecht.Read more

      Day 9 - Wisque to Therouanne

      It was good walking today. I walked solo and only saw one push bike on the Path. I saw a big group of walkers behind me, but they never caught up to me. I had one close contact with a tractor, of which I have never seen so many of my entire life - they are literally everywhere. And, just when you think you have seen everything that cultivated and grazing land has to offer, you will surprise a hare and they will run in front of you, or the sun will come out and warm you briefly, and make you smile, or you'll pass another field of yellow flowers, which I believe is Canola, and you will feel happy just to see their brilliance. But the joyful surprise today was walking on what was probably an old train line, with high earth shoulders on either side and a very stony bed. I really felt I was all alone on the planet in a secret, special place. There was a fair bit of mud to contend with today, and I did slip a few times, but it does not rate a 'Mud' day. Oh yes, I saw the largest snail I have ever seen in my life. Finally, the stained glass windows were in this weird creepy basement under the pilgrim accommodation at the Abbey in Wisque that was set up like a chapel.Read more

      Una serata Lilla

      Chiediamo scusa ai nostri followers per l'assenza! Ma eravamo occupati a mangiare patine e waffle (full reportage fra poco).

      Per la nostra ultima soirée francaise abbiamo continuato con l'eplorazione delle birre (Ipa Hirondelle e La Bise au fruits rouges).
      Per stare leggeri dopo la birra abbiamo cenato con una teglia (a testa) di pane inzuppato nella birra, prosciutto e formaggio fuso (welsh).
      Vorremo inoltre invitare i francesi, visto il precedente della Gioconda, a rubare anche alcune abitudini italiane quali l'uso del bidet e l'utilizzo di appositi contenitori per lo scopettino del wc (non del pentole). Un bacio.      Read more

      Bailleul to Lille (to Wasquehal).

      It can be difficult to know how to start writing these entries. Sometimes, I start by just writing about what happened that day, and then I realise, what does it even matter? It's not really important what I did, just what I took from it. And well, yes, French pedestrian crossings might be entirely useless (and terrifying) for one, and, yes, I might be the only person north of the channel to so much as own a Renault Twingo. But more to the point, being able to have meaningful discussions and learn about the world through another's experiences has really been everything I've gained from Lille. Everyone has a story to tell, and unfortunately, I don't quite have the French to be able to understand those of others', nor to tell my own with any real purpose in the depths of the French campagne. But it turns out that proper conversation really is fundamental to what it means to just feel like a human (woah who'd have thought). And one thing I often get asked is 'Don't you get lonely?' Well, to be honest, I'm not really sure what the actual answer is to that, maybe sometimes? The truth is that you don't really need much. But what you do occasionally need is just to be with the right people, and in the right environment. So thanks to Patrick from Nantes and to Matteo (& Hippolyte!) for making my time in Lille.       Denkmäler und viel Laufen 🥵

      Wir leben noch! Den Footprint gestern haben wir einfach unterschlagen, weil... Ihr wisst... das Alter. 🥲

      Nachdem wir gestern irgendwann in Escalles gelandet sind, haben wir einen Standplatz mit Strom unser Eigen nennen dürfen. So mit echter Toilette und Dusche. Herrlich sauber haben wir uns heute Morgen gefühlt. Wir vermissen wirklich nicht viel, aber Duschen geht in unserem Wohnklo einfach nicht.
      Wir haben gestern einen Spaziergang in der Bucht gemacht und abends gab es lecker Fertig-Bolo.
      Nachdem wir dann heute Morgen unser bestelltes Baguette und Pain au Chocolat verdrückt haben, ging es für uns nur ein paar hundert Meter weiter zum Baby-Aufstieg zu einem Denkmal. Das steht übrigens nochmal in gleicher Ausfertigung gegenüber auf Dovers höchstem Küstenpunkt. In der Ferne kann man mit viel Zoomen auch die englische Küste sehen.
      Anschließend haben wir noch an einem Leuchtturm gestoppt und neue Camper Freunde gefunden, mit denen man sich (Daniel) so über Elektrik und Schwerlastauszüge ausgetauscht hat. Ruth und ich haben uns dann eher auf die Bequemlichkeit eines Raumbades und einer Backform für den Gasherd beschränkt. 😅
      Eigentlich wollten wir dort auf dem Leuchtturmparkplatz verweilen, aber nachdem wir das Bußgeld Schild entdeckt haben, haben wir doch noch mal einen Blick in die App geworfen und sind diesen wunderschönen Parkplatz angefahren, auf dem wir jetzt stehen. Alles richtig gemacht, finden wir. Wir stehen direkt an der Küste und konnten es nicht besser treffen. Für 9.45€ für 24h auch noch ein echter Schnapper.
      Die Roller durften uns heute zum Einkaufen begleiten und so haben wir auch noch etwas von dem kleinen Dörfchen gesehen.
      Nach einem lecker Abendessen, bei dem das Hackfleisch eher nach Mett geschmeckt hat - aber wer weiß schon, was ich da gekauft habe, sah jedenfalls nach Hackfleisch aus - geht es für uns nun ins Heiabett und morgen auf einen Dünenstandplatz.
      Es soll etwas windiger werden, also haben wir vielleicht genug Zug für den Lenkdrachen. 🤩      Read more

      Weiter geht's nach Wimereux. Ein wunderschönes Naturschutzgebiet
      Vom Parkplatz geht ein Pfad hinunter auf den breiten Sandstrand, welcher übersät mit lauter Muscheln ist.
      Wir wandern die Dünen entlang durch Sanddorngebüsche und sehr viele Brombeeren. Dann fahren wir die Küste weiter entlang und sehen einige Befestigungen vom Krieg am Napoleon Strand.Read more

      Nach Boulogne-sur-Mer zum Waschen

      Heute strahlender Sonnenschein, Grund genug, Nützliches mit dem Schönen zu verbinden, daher radelten wir uns 20 km entfernte wunderschöne Städtchen Boulogne-sur-Mer. Traumhafte Landschaften säumten unseren Weg, und das Städtchen selbst ist mehr Wert als eine Waschaktion! Aber wir haben uns in netter Umgebung due Zeit mit Café und Kuchen vertrieben, Leute geguckt und die tollen alten Gebäude rund um uns bewundert.
      Wir werden hier sicher noch einmal hinfahren, ohne Gepäck und mit mehr Zeit.

      Auf dem Weg sahen wir diese riesige Napoleon-Statue. 1798 errichtete Napoleon „das Lager von Boulogne“ in dem nahe gelegenen natürlichen Hafen und wollte von hier aus England erobern 😳 In Gedenken daran wurde diese Statue geschaffen …

      Heute ging es für uns in Europas größtes Aquarium. Zunächst konnten wir da ein riesengroßes Becken bestaunen, in dem uns vorallem die Rochen fasziniert haben. Mit einer Leichtigkeit gleiten sie durchs Wasser. Es ist zauberhaft!
      Auch das Robben Ecken, bei dem diese auch unter den Füßen durchtauchen konnte, war einfach nur fantastisch!      Read more
