      Paris day 2

      Had a lovely day with Fanny as our tour guide...we went for breakfast and then set off walking around heaps. We got nice weather mostly...but leaving Montmartre the rain started. Managed not to get soaked like in Venice.

      We left Fanny to go to her grandmothers 90th a few hours away...and we went to the Louvre. We booked skip line tickets with an entry time...this proved awesome value compared to sistine chapel in Rome. To find it from street we entered gate 99 and proceeded down in to a mall underground...missed the queues out in the open by the priamid ... assume that was for tickets on the day.

      Wow...so large...they had free lockers which was handy as saved carrying my day pack and it was very hot.

      Probably should have spent the money on headphones tour using Nintendo for $6 euro as meant could skip...or search the display number... rather than listening to all info taking days!

      Had snack at McDonald's to try their chicken nuggets...then home to heat up a preheat chicken tikka...the nuggets were more crispy and tasted less processed.

      Vanessa has not been well...she has a coughing bug...poor thing is so tired and her chest sore from hacking so much...hope I don't catch it!      Read more

      NOTRE DAME

      Nach einem guten Mittagessen am Montmartre, welcher sehr überfüllt mit Besuchern war, begeben Amalia und ich uns zum Notre Dame um danach im Park vom Louvre im Schatten auszuruhen. Am Montmartre lassen wir uns von einem lustigen Fotografen ein antikes Foto machen, er erbittet sich nur eine Spende.       Day 3

      Second day in Paris

      Il mio secondo giorno a Parigi è stato più rilassante e meno caotico del primo. Ho iniziato tornando alla Torre Eiffel, per ammirarla stavolta dalla terrazza del Trocadero. Nonostante il tempo incerto, ne è valsa davvero la pena! Ho prenotato poi l'entrata prioritaria alla Sainte Chapelle e mi sono diretta in quel luogo ma ho sbagliato direzione del pullman e sono arrivata più tardi del previsto. Per fortuna però mi hanno fatto ugualmente entrare ed ho potuto ammirare le vetrate mozzafiato che caratterizzano quella chiesa. Da lì, a poca distanza c'è la famosa Notre-Dame, ancora chiusa a causa dell'incendio che l'ha distrutta nel 2019, ma grazie alla mostra di un famoso fotografo è stato possibile osservare le foto dei danni presenti al suo interno. Poi mi sono diretta verso il quartiere latino, visitando la chiesa di San Severin, passando per la famosa università della Sorbona e la biblioteca di Shakespeare. Proprio lì accanto c'era un ristorante con tipica cucina francese e ho deciso di assaggiare il cibo locale, in particolare la Confit de Canard (Anatra) che, contro ogni aspettativa, era davvero molto buona! Nel pomeriggio ho scelto di visitare il bellissimo Jardin du Luxembourg, dove mi sono rilassata mangiando un ottimo macaron al cioccolato. Lì sono rimasta colpita dai bambini che giocavano con le barchette in un piccolo laghetto, erano molto felici. Poi però è arrivato il temporale e siamo corsi tutti al riparo!
      Poiché è difficile muoversi sotto la pioggia col navigatore, ho deciso di fermarmi in un bar per prendere un caffè e rilassarmi osservando le vite delle persone che camminavano davanti a me. A volte non ci rendiamo conto di quanto sia bello fermarsi anche solo ad osservare, non è mai tempo perso!
      Terminata la pioggia mi sono diretta verso il Pantheon e in ultimo ho visitato la chiesa di Sant Etienne dove si trova la tomba di Sainte Geneviève, il santo patrono di Parigi.
      Penso di aver visitato molto in questi due giorni e sono soddisfatta, non mi resta che salutare questa bellissima città, piena di arte, gioia e amore.

      Notre-Dame

      Notre-Dame
      Today we made it onto one of the islands in the Seine River, Île de la Cité. Home of the famous Notre-Dame.
      The cathedral suffered a large fire back in 2019, where most of the roof was destroyed along with the large spire.
      So the whole area was blocked off for renovations. You might think this was a bummer, but it turned out to be quite fascinating. There were placards all along one side talking about the restoration process. The work done to immediately stabilize the roof area, the planning of the restoration using the same materials as the original, the mobilization of craftsmen from all over. Like I said fascinating. The job at hand is literally monumental. There are over 1,000 people working on the project. You can read about it in the link below.

      Day 4

      Les Catacombes de Paris

      Heute ging es für uns 20 Meter (130 Stufen und eine enge Wendeltreppe) unter die Erde hinab: in die Katakomben von Paris. Die Katakomben sind alte Steinbrüche die sich unter der Stadt befinden. Im 18. Jahrhundert kam es in Paris zu großen Seuchen und Hungersnöten, welche die Friedhöfe völlig überfüllten. Die Gräber waren doppelt und dreifach belegt und an einigen Stellen lagen die Menschenteile sogar bis an die Oberfläche. Es herrschten unhaltbare Zustände und der Verwesungsgeruch war teilweise so stark, dass Lebensmittel verdorben und Menschen krank wurden. Um dieses Problem zu lösen, brachte man die Gebeine unterhalb der Stadt unter. Und da sind wir nun: Arrêté C'est ici empire de la mort.
      Wir stehen im ersten Gang mit unzähligen Knochen. Schon sehr makaber und gruselig.
      Die Knochen dürfen auch nicht berührt werden, darauf gibt es eine Geld oder sogar Gefängnisstrafe. An der Oberfläche kaum angekommen am Ausgang wurde Benni gefragt, ob er "Any Bones" dabei hat. Scheinbar haben sich hier schon Leute ein Souvenirs der etwas anderen Art mitgenommen. Nach den Katakomben ging es für uns auf den Friedhof Montparnasse, zum Grab von Serge Gainsbourg, ein französischer Chansonnier, Schauspieler, Komponist und Schriftsteller. Er war dem Whisky und den Gitanes (Zigaretten) nicht abgeneigt. Auch komponierte er ein Lied über die Metro, daher legen in Gedenken an ihn Fans auf dessen Grab alte Fahrscheine und Whiskygläser nieder. Wir hinterließen auch unsere Karten. 😉
      Noch ein Abstecher zum Grab von Jean Paul Sarte, Philosoph, Dramatiker, Publizist.

      Weiter ging es für uns nach Notre-Dame. Notre Dame liegt übrigens auf der Île de la Cité, also einer kleinen Insel auf der Seine. Besichtigen kann man die Kathedrale leider auf Grund des Großbrandes 2019 nicht.

      20 Km a piedi tra le strade parigine

      Il primo vero giorno passato a Parigi inizia con un'entusiasmante visita del Centre Pompidou, museo che ospita tra le più importanti opere di arte moderna e contemporanea in Europa.

      E dopo essere rimasti affascinati dai capolavori di Kandinsky, Chagall e De Chirico, abbiamo pranzato in un buonissimo ristorantino cinese (che ci ha dato le forze di camminare per il resto del giorno).

      Abbiamo poi attraversato la città a piedi, passando per le Tuileries, i Champ de Mars e i Jardin du Luxembourg.      Read more

      Running late. Coffee and croissant. Metro to Tuileries for the Orangerie. Long queue, possibly for the Modigliani. Flash our out of date pass which helps move us up a few places. Through security- so slow. Now stuck behind old lady who is renewing her pass in slow motion. And then paying by cheque. We finally get where we want to be but it takes a looong time.       Our main mission is to renew our Musee d'Orsay pass. Planned to be a quick in and out overnight trip but in the end we went mad and booked two nights.       Auf Mamas Wunsch ist unser nächstes Ziel die Ile de la Cité
      und Notre Dame.

      Der Brand in 2019 war sehr bewegend und dramatisch.
      Umso schöner ist es, zu sehen, dass die Wiederaufbauarbeiten voran gehen. Die Fotos, die rings um Notre Dame stehen und die Tragödie greifbar machen, gehen unter die Haut.

      Bei der Stadtrundfahrt haben wir erfahren, dass je nach Bauleiter das Jahr der Fertigstellung zwischen 2024 (zu Olympia) oder mindestens 10 Jahren später liegt…      Read more
