      Paris, France (Days 1 & 2)

      What we did:
      - Got into Paris around 5pm. Great audible to take the train instead of drive. We checked into our hotel in the trendy 10th arrondissement - nice place and no bed bugs either!! Nice to be in this area as it's around all the local haunts.
      - Walked over to grab Ramen for dinner and enjoyed a nice chill dinner. But we are in Paris so before calling it a night we needed some street Crepes! We tried to get to two places that we’re a 20ish minute walk from us and once we were close it started getting fairly sketchy…. So we called it and just headed back to the hotel. Fortunately we stumbled upon one right near us that just wasn’t on Google - the banana nutella street crepes were amazing!
      - Woke up to meet Trent’s cousin Sarah who’s a senior at the American university in Paris! Turns out the hotel we booked was one block away from her apartment - what are the odds in such a sprawling city as Paris?!
      - We enjoyed croissants and coffee from a local boulangerie as we caught our train out to the town of Reims in Champagne! So great to catch up with Sarah on the way.
      - Once in Reims we walked through the town and saw the famous Notre Dame church. We had time before our first tasting so we grabbed some drinks and then hit another boulangerie for sammies. French bread always hits>>>
      - We taxi’d to the first stop at the notorious Veuve Clicquot. Was an hour and half tour of the caves and tasting of 5 champagnes. Definitely pretty commercial but we really enjoyed the whole experience. Heavy pours too!
      - Afterwards we took an Uber about 20 mins into the countryside to the Mailly champagne house. It was raining but we were still able to see the rows of gorgeous colored vineyards. Wine country in the fall is beautiful as each vine takes on it’s own color. Sarah said that visiting the Champagne region is her equivalent to a Pumpkin Patch - must be nice to be a local Parisian!
      - Mailly was awesome as we had a 1:1 with the tour lady for about an hour. Super interesting to hear about the differences in how champagne is bottled as compared to still wine. Mailly is also a collective where all the farmers in the village produce the grapes and combined in the house. Great comparison to the commercialization of Veuve.
      - Grabbed a beer at “Hemingway’s” in town for an hour and caught the train home. So fun to see Sarah and find out about her life living in Paris!
      - Sarah went home to study (not sure how in the Champagne fog) while we regrouped and went to a local Cafe for burgers! Man the French know how to make a burger.
      - Then we took the metro to the Eiffel Tower! Right as we got off the train we hit the viewpoint to see it do it’s hourly twinkle. Honestly pretty cool given we voted it is likely the most famous man-made thing on earth.
      - Walked around the park for an hour and a half, but it was getting cold and it was a long day so called a cab back. We immediately fell asleep when the heads hit the pillows. Great day!

      What we ate:
      - Yamanashi Ramen for dinner. Honestly not great and turns out the guy comes around with a QR code to give him a 5 star rating - no wonder it got so many 5 star reviews on Google...
      - Croissants from Du Pain et des ídeas in the 10th arrondissement
      - Delicious sandwiches for lunch at Le Four a Bois.
      - Burgers and spicy cauliflower at La Banquette Marais cafe in the 10th arrondissement!

      Fun facts:
      - Under the town of Reims there are 250 km of caves that all the champagne houses use to store and age their champagne. During WW2 the French hid out in these caves. Even though the Germans knew about it, they couldn’t figure out how to get down there so this saved many lives.
      - Veuve actually exports 90% of it’s champagne to the US and Japan. So it’s actually a commercialized producer that the locals don’t like as much. After tasting Mailly we agreed it’s overrated!      Leer más

      Kostenloser Stellplatz am Stadion. Aber nur nutzbar, wenn im Stadion kein Spiel stattfindet. Sehr laut da neben der Autobahn.

      Keine Ver- und Entsorgung und ohne Strom. Auch kein Fernsehempfang möglich.Leer más

      Notre Dame i Reimes

      Nu har vi sett så många fina kyrkor så de är värda en egen sida! Katedralen i Toledo, fantastiskt fin! San Sebastian, La Rochelle, Nantes, alla har väldigt fina kyrkor. Saint Nicolai i Nantes och Notre Dame i Reimes är två favoriter. Ljusspelet på katedralen i Reimes slår det mesta man har sett! Otroligt häftigt! Katedralens utseende förändrades hela tiden med hjälp av ljus och projicerade bilder. Det måste upplevas live, ni får åka hit helt enkelt 😉.Leer más

      Weiter geht es zurück Richtung Osten. Wir machen einen Stop in Reims. Besonders beeindruckend ist hier die Kathedrale Notre-Dame de Reims, die zu den bekanntesten Kirchen Frankreichs zählt.

      Im 13. Jahrhundert erbaut, wurden hier viele Könige gekrönt. Einige Fenster wurden von Chagall entworfen. Steinmetze haben insgesamt 2.300 Statuen erschaffen. Seit 1991 ist sie UNESCO Weltkulturerbe.Leer más

      Auch bei Tage spektakulär

      Auch wenn sie nicht von vier Türmen aus mit Licht bearbeitet wird ist die Kathedrale von Reims absolut königlich. Immerhin wurden in Reims jahrhundertelang die französischen Könige gekrönt - vom Chlodwig, dem ersten Franken bis zu Karl X. dem allerletzten Bourbonen.
      Das beeindruckende an dem Bau ist die Figurenpracht. Keine Nische, aus der nicht irgendein Heiliger, Prophet, König, Engel oder Dämon auf einen herabblickt … und selbst unter den Figuren gucken noch Figuren raus. Die berühmteste ist der „lächelnde Engel“, der süffisant grinsend seinem Nachbarn in die offene Schädeldecke schaut. Im Ernst: Ich habe keine Ahnung, warum der so grinst.      Leer más

      This morning we were up at 7am. We’d had a pretty good nights sleep except for being woken up at 1:15am by what sounded like someone banging some shoes together. We never did work out what or where the noise was or came from.
      At 8:30am we were dressed and the bed was made and we were pretty much ready to leave sitting there drinking coffee. There was a lot of banging and clicking from the Motorhome that had parked next to us. In fact they had been clicking cupboards and banging doors ever since they arrived. We think it’s a hire vehicle and even though it’s as big as Wanda they seem to have anything they need stored in the outside lockers.
      At 8:30am the man of the Motorhome got out and got something from the outside locker then climbed back in to his Motorhome. 30 seconds later he re-emerges carrying something with a long lead followed by his wife whose in her Pyjamas and dressing gown carrying a coffee cup. They both Wanda over to the water station and put whatever he was carrying on the top. It was a coffee machine, one of those ones that looks like a penguin, and to our amazement he’s looking around for a power point to plug it in. We couldn’t believe our eyes.
      Luckily for normal humans there isn’t a plug socket at the water station and a minute later he had to do the walk of shame back to the Motorhome and she followed him carrying her empty coffee cup.
      Just after 9am we left the park up still laughing about the Germans and their coffee machine. I think it would have been better if there had been a plug and we’d have watched them for 10 minutes while the coffee brewed and dripped out.
      We had just a 15 mile journey to our stop of the day and for a big city we had a great parking spot at the football ground where all parking is free and it lets motorhomes stay there aslong as they want except on game days. From the park up it’s literally a straight line 10 minute walk right into the city centre.
      Reims really surprised us as a city. It was easy to get into. Easy to find a parking space and easy to navigate into the city centre. Our first stop was Reims Cathedral which was very similar to Notre Damme in Paris. It has huge vaulted ceilings. Untold amounts of stained glass and the stained glass with Jesus being crucified dates back to the year 1245. Outside the sculptures and statues were amazing. I think we could have sat there all day and still not seen everything in the outside.
      Once the cathedral was done we walked around the corner to the old royal palace which is now a hotel. Then we went to see the remains of an old convent and then we found the shops.
      We’re not shoppers so except for one gift store we just wandered the streets and Reims seems like a very calm and civilised city. It has trams and electric buses running around but the streets were pretty quiet for first thing in a Monday morning.
      With the sights done we headed back to Wanda stopping at a bakery and buying some fresh bread, and Ellie brought a fruit bread cake and I brought a pistachio cream eclair. It was all to good, especially the eclair. I should have brought 2.
      It was now just after midday and with the city done and lunch out of the way we decided to move to a quieter park up half way to tomorrows stop and we set off.      Leer más

      We're back in Western Euope! We began this leg by flying into Paris, and renting a car. The small city of Reims France makes an excellent day trip or short stay while making your way to the eastern edge of France.

      The most noteworthy attraction being the Reims Cathedral which is stunning from the outside but also has some of the more beautiful stained glass works in church's we have seen. A UNESCO World Heritage site built in 1211 it did not disappoint. Prior to this it was the coronation spot for all the Kings of France. Reims was a quite city full of locals lacking the hustle and bustle which makes it a more peaceful location to base yourself in the northern Champagne region.      Leer más

      Ausflug nach Reims

      Heute Vormittag haben wir es ruhig angehen lassen und sind erst gegen Mittag aufgebrochen nach Reims. Eine wirklich sehenswerte kleine Stadt und auch garnicht so überlaufen. Am schönsten Platz der Stadt haben wir einen Espresso und ein regionales Bier getrunken. Das Bier war gut, die Preise allerdings gesalzen. Die Kathedrale aus dem 16ten Jahrhundert ist beeindruckend. Später sind wir über kleine Dörfer und zwischen Weinbergen zu dem Restaurant gefahren, das uns Gernot empfohlen hat und haben ein 3 Gänge Menü genossen. Leider war es dann von dort über 1 Stunde nach Hause, und das obwohl wir sogar durch eine Straßensperre durchgefahren sind. Wir waren unschlüssig, aber weil ein weiterer Deutscher einfach durchgefahren ist und nicht zurückkam habe wir es riskiert! Daheim gab es dann noch ein Absackerbier bevor wir alle müde ins Bett sind.Leer más

      Day 1 Reims

      Started off for the Eurotunnel to start our 2 week trip in Europe (doesn’t really compare to 5 years but ....) Made good time and got an earlier shuttle than the one booked. Decided to meander towards Reims and bought French bread and cheese in a supermarket, then found a lovely park to eat it in. Went on a motorway for the last leg of the journey. Parking was booked at the accommodation but the spaces were made for small cars, so it was a bit of a squeeze! Accommodation very good and only a short walk to Reims centre, where there was a party atmosphere following France’s football win. Sitting outside watching the evening game John wished he wasn’t driving when he saw the fun metre of beer dispensers. We then moved to a Mexican restaurant which was also showing the football!       Citywalk Reims

      Reims hat natürlich noch mehr zu bieten als nur die Kathedrale. Die Stadt gilt als inoffizielle Hauptstadt der Weinbauregion Champagne. Viele bekannte Champagnerkellereien haben hier ihren Hauptsitz. Mächtige Firmensitze z.T. auf parkähnlichen Grundstücken. Mit Champagner lässt sich offenbar richtig Geld verdienen.

      Der Triumphbogen Porte de Mars aus dem 3. Jh. erinnert an die Zeit der römischen Herrschaft. Bis zum Jahr 1544 diente der Bogen als Stadttor und gehörte zu der antiken Mauer, welche die Stadt umschloss. Von der Porte de Mars aus gingen die Römerstraßen nach Soissons und Bavay, Laon und Boulogne.

      Der Burger in der Fußgängerzone musste einfach sein!      Leer más
