    Layby near Heselbach

    Driving south off the ridge we saw yet more stunning sights as the sun reached previously shaded forest and caused the snow and water to evaporate in whisps. There were glassy lakes reflecting trees that rose up the hillsides at their shores.

    Our philosophy with our old van had been to wait until something went wrong then either sort it ourselves or get a garage to fix it. Given the importance of the new van to our everyday lives, we want to keep it well maintained and had managed to book a service at a good garage we'd used a few years back near Stuttgart. After reaching the lake at Titisee we turned and headed back up north towards in order to get to the garage on Wednesday.

    There weren't a lot of laybys on the route and it was getting late so we made do with one that had only a small strip of grass separating it from the road. Unfortunately it was one of those laybys that is littered with cardboard coffee cups and mess from when people haven't been able to find a toilet. Not the nicest of places but it was only for one night.

    Day 13 Seewald

    We were woke early this morning by building works nearby, handily it was an early last departure from this hotel of 10 am, but we were up and away well before. Our drive to Seewald took us through Dachau where there is a memorial to concentration camp victims. It then went alongside the mountains ( on our left) almost until we got to the Black Forest. The hotel was perfect for me very friendly people, large room with balcony and a basket with swimming towels robes and sandals. On the grounds was a swimming pool/lake with a sauna beside it. Sun loungers and chairs. Spent a lovely afternoon and early evening exploring and swimming. I the evening there was a BBQ with cold soup followed by your choice of food to be BBQ’d (I had fish and John meats, with salads and breads. Then for dessert, John was full but I had ginger and sweet potato tart with walnut ice cream. Delicious.Read more

    Day 14 Matougues

    Sadly leaving this beautiful hotel where all the rooms were allegedly named after German gods ours was Auerhahn. The key fobs were cute miniature wooden trees. The other cute thing that pleased my little mind were wooden pegs with the room name on to clip to your robe/towel so they didn’t get muddled. Still onward towards France. On the way we drove through miles of beautiful woodland through the Black Forest. We stopped and went for a walk by a dam, and through part of the Black Forest. It was an amazing place as I have never seen such large areas of forest. We pressed on to matougues and stopped at our next hotel, where you can see our accommodation behind the swimming pool. This was just a normal outdoor pool but still got to cool off after a long drive and walk. We had booked our evening meal here in advance as a last treat before going home. We chose the set menu of seasonal regional produce, which included a cheese course with a whole trolly of cheeses to chose from. I did make a pig of myself and chose 5! As it was a Champaign producing area we felt obliged to have some with the meal.Read more

    Nach ere längere Fahrt über Stuttgart, si mr im Schwarzwald acho. In Stuttgart hei mr ou ändlich üses Päckli mit dem Sonnedach chöne abhole u heis da natürli sofort ufgstöut😉 Gmüetlich gnüsse mr da na üsi letschti Abe vo dere Reis u fahre morn id Schwiiz zrögg.

    Für mich war der Haik ein wirklich unvergessliches Erlebnis. Wir haben nicht nur wahnsinnig viel Menschlichkeit erfahren und ein großes Abenteuer erlebt, sondern auch sehr viel gelernt. Das Team passte sehr gut zu einander und ich fühlte mich sehr wohl.
    Ich persönlich habe mich in Empathie und Verantwortung gesteigert. Das kann ich jetzt im Alltag gebrauchen und es hat mich sehr stark weiter gebracht.
    Es war eine große Anstrengung. Wir hatten Stress und körperliche Belastungen durch weite Strecken. Aber momentan geht es mir wieder gut.
    Es war schön aber jetzt freue ich mich auch auf zu Hause.

    Journey to the Black Forest

    We farewelled our fellow travelers onboard the Patria after breakfast and strolled to Saarburg Station where we took a train to Saarbruken. A further short stroll had us at the Europcar rental place where we took possession of a Renault SUV after a minute of drama when Stuart was unable to find his driver's licence. As the backup driver I was feeling most relieved when he found it.
    Our 250klm drive to Alpirshach in the Black Forest went smoothly.
    The place is as good as the tourist guides say it is.

    Dining with Alpirsbach Locals

    We stopped and chatted to a man and his wife (Hilda?) on our walk home from town on Sunday and they asked us to join them for dinner (breads) on Tuesday. So we did and whilst their english was limited we shared some stories and learnt a lot about their way of life as farmers/foresters as well as holding a full time job as Agronomists.
    We were joined bytheir neighbour and he entertained us with some german songs. Not sure our versions of Waltzing Matilda were up to his high standards but they clapped.

    Deutschland, Tonbach

    "Restaurant Köhlerstube"
    Hotel Traube Tonbach
    Nachdem ich das Restaurant Köhlerstube im legendärem Traube Tonbach Hotel betreten habe, hat mir Herr Wohlfahrt (einer der besten Köche Europas) ersteinmal zugenickt. Ganz angetan von dieser Geste (wann kommt man schon mit solch tollen Persönlichkeiten in Kontakt) erwartete ich etwas nervös meine "Geschäftsessens-Partner".
    Das Ambiente in der Köhlerstube war gemütlich, rustikal und edel zugleich. Das Essen war ein Traum. Jeder Gang (es waren vier!) war ein Gedicht für sich. Die Birnen-Cannelloni zum Abschluss waren eine pure Geschmacksexplosion.
    Wegen des Charakters dieses Essens war ich aber eben etwas nervös und hab ganz vergessen alles im Detail in mich aufzusaugen und so bleibt mir zur Köhlerstube nur zu sagen: ich komme wieder!
