      Zur Höll

      December 18, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 23 °F

We have been eating a ton of amazing food this trip so far but this restaurant has been hands down the best food to date. (Of course this means it’s cash only). It’s so good in fact we have been twice!

Well that’s what this was going to say when we wrote it yesterday knowing we were coming back tonight. Well today changed that. Tonight’s dinner experience was a clear example that the chef makes all the difference. Tonight’s food was horrible. In fact the best food title has changed. Today we tried a ham sandwich at the market for €4,50. It was the best ham we ever had. (Sorry Dad) We went back twice for more!

      Erstes Hinschnuppern Rothenburg

      October 24, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Anhaltender Regen begleitete unsere Fahrt.

      Rothenburg Museum (and shop)

      October 6, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Housed in an old monastery, the building was as interesting as the exhibits (which were surprisingly varied and included a hell of a weaponry collection). Note the painting with my door from earlier (I got excited about that lol). Also a few pics from a really, really neat shop off the main market square -- it's like Ren Fair in a store!Read more

      Plönlein/Toppler Castle

      December 18, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 23 °F

Did you know Rothenburg de Tauber is the start of the romantic road, which is what the Grimm Brothers used as inspiration for many of their stories? Well neither did we. In fact, in town there are two spots that were used as inspiration for tales.

The first is Plönlein which is a famous split in the road that was part of the inspiration for Pinocchio.

The second is Toppler Castle. While it may not look it, this tower is over 80 feet tall. We will let you take a guess which fairytale this castle inspired.

The third you won’t recognize…because it’s just a cool looking bridge we found!

      Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

      April 9, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

We left Mittenwald this morning and on our way to Miltenberg we stopped to explore the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a German town in northern Bavaria known for its medieval architecture. Half-timbered houses line the cobblestone lanes of its old town and the town walls include many preserved gate houses and towers, plus a covered walkway on top. Today it is one of only three towns in Germany that still have completely intact city walls.

It was a very pretty town but boy was it crowded, especially after the towns we had already been to. And with me not feeling very well it was hard to really enjoy it and embrace the business. It was surprising it was so busy as being Easter Sunday all the shops, excluding cafes and restaurants, were closed.

We did find a very traditional restaurant to have a very traditional lunch before stopping to buy a Schneeballen (which means snow ball). This pastry treat is typical of the region and has been made for the past 400 years so we just had to try one. Not sure we would rush out to try another one - it was a deep-fried pastry made from shortcut pastry sprinkled with icing sugar or coated with chocolate for a more modern version. Interesting and great to try something that has such a long history.

We did enjoy our stop here, admiring the beautiful buildings, the lovely Easter displays and the vibrant squares. It is a town that would be nice to visit after all the day tourist leave (and yes, I know we are day tourists and contributed to the crowds).

    • Day 48

      Rothenburg

      October 8, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Rothenberg is one of those picture perfect postcard towns. While it received some bombing damage in WW2, it was the 30 Year's War in the 1600's that did a lot more damage to it. A lot of buildings from that time period have survived intact and make it a living museum. That's why hordes of tourists flock here. It's early October, so the high season is over and most of the rest of the tourists are day-trippers on tours. We're spending 2 nights which is plenty of time to soak up the views.

Something about this town seemed so familiar, and then I found out it's the setting of "Vulgaria" in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the infamous Child Catcher! Yikes. I thinks some Madison 20 somethings are still having nightmares from when I dressed up as the Child Catcher one year for a Halloween party for kids. It was really me scaring the parents, which scared the kids.

Anyhoo, the photos will give you a better picture than I can describe. The weather is perfect, a sunny early Autumn day, and after a few walks around the well-preserved town walls, we're chiling out after another delicious lunch. We're staying in a zimmer (room) above a restaurant. It's about 300 years old and we've got a really nice room. The floor is slanted a bit, which gives it a funhouse kind of feel, but we're not complaining. We opted for dinner on the first floor last night, and Deanne had half of a very large duck and I opted for more pork, a humongous pork shoulder with kraut and potato dumplings. My god, the portions are huge here.

Breakfast below had the most fresh fruit we've seen anywhere on the trip and it was a welcome surprise. Of coure we also had the requisite cold cuts and cheese. Only a couple other people are staying here.

About 75% of the town works in tourism of some sort here, so I think everyone breathes a sigh of relief in late fall before business picks up again for Christmas. They sell a lot of cuckoo clocks and Christmas memorabilia. We went to a few museums and took the famous Night Watchman's tour around town at night. It was a humorous take on what living here during the middle ages was like.

    • Day 3

      Rothenburg ob der Tauber

      June 2, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Rothenburg

      Day Seven
Breakfast at 9 AM in the hotel restaurant. Very nice breakfast scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, croissants, assorted jams and jellies. Top it off with hot tea and the meal was complete. The day was overcast and the forecast was for scattered storms and sunshine. We received mostly cloudy skies and rain. The temperature dropped throughout the day into evening. We spent more time shopping rather than sightseeing. Thanks Heather for the suggestion to see Käthe Wohlfahrt-Weihnachtsdorf. It is a muti-floor Christmas store. I have never seen anything like it. Well worth the time.
We walked around the city shooting pictures like we were tourists. LOL.
i had to take a picture of the most photographed house in Germany, which turned out not to be a secret with the tour busses. I waited for some time before I could get just the right shot.
We ate Italian tonight for the first time on this trip. We had dinner at "Roma." What a great setting, service, and meal. Linda declared, "Best meal of the Trip."
Getting to bed early as we head north beyond Franfurt to visit the German town and fortress, Braunfels.

Von der Innentalsperre an die Tauber

      June 1, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

So kanns weitergehen :D.

Mal sehen, was die Betreiber sagen.
