      Bamberg

      14 maj, Tyskland ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We wandered down the street to have breakfast in a café, but not until 9am. It was a fantastic, warm spring day. We went around the town a little and up to the Catherdral and another church up on the high side of town. When Bamberg was a regional powerhouse the administrators had the high side and churches, while the people had the low side and businesses, with the town hall on the very border. It was the burghers saying their admin was as good as that of the lords and nobles.

The biggest church is closed for renovations. We also met Max on the Rathaus bridge at 1130, and walked around then had a coffee before he had to head home to see Jens, who was not well.

The afternoon was spent wandering around bits of Bamberg we had seen before, but only ever in winter, then going to Ilke’s flute practice for 40 mins. She really is good, and her teacher was delighted we came.

Anne had mapped out dinner – two of Bamberg’s eight breweries were in the same street as the music lesson, so we tried the first one. Bavarian (or Frankish) pub life at its best, in a brewery that opened in 1649.

Tomorrow is a train to Luebeck…but not until 9:42am.

      Paris to Bamberg

      13 maj, Tyskland ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We were on the metro at 6:07 and at Gare de l'Est by 6:40 for the train to Bamberg... a trip of 865 or so km.

It was two trains together, so the walk along the platform to find our carriage was 250m +. It streaked to Strasbourg, then crawled to Karlsruhe and Frankfurt at 11 9or a few minutes late0 and we changed to the Regional train to Bamberg - 11:30-14:32, and stopping everywhere in between.

Bamberg in summer is a new experience. We have been here three times before, but always in winter. The days are longer and the colours brighter... although there are also lots of (mainly German ) tourists about. We stopped at a laundromat on the way, so checked in at the hotel (Messerschmidt Weinhaus) at 3:30. It seems an odd name, but it is the building where Messerschmitt of Messerschmitt aircraft fame was born and opened his first aircraft manufacturing business in 1923. We have a lovely bright room, almost in the old town. We organised ourselves, planned a little for Wednesday /Thursday (still tbd), walked around the town hall just to re-acquaint ourselves, then headed off to meet Max at 6:30 at a restaurant/brewery near his new house.

When I was an exchange student in 1975, I lived in Neumuenster, which is between Hamburg and Kiel. I lived with Max's family for perhaps half the year. Much of the other 6 months were spent with two other families, whom we will visit on Friday and Saturday when back there. Max is a few years younger than me, but we got on well and keep in touch. Max moved to Bamberg perhaps 40 years ago, and began a website design business that did well. He married quite late (say 18 years ago) and has two children (13 and 11). Max was immortalised in the Great Bamberg Snowball Fight of January 2003, when Nico (in his first professional snowfight) was out-manouvered and hit by his own handfuls of snow, while Alistair picked everyone off becasue no-one could match his range.

Tragically, Max's wife died about 15 months ago. Dinner had to fit in with school and flute lessons, since Max is now Mr Dad, and it was always going to be a bit tentative, I thought. In reality, it was fantastic. We were bowled along by the unstoppable enthusiasm of 11 yo Jens, who has taught himself English by watching The Beast on Youtube, and was speaking excellent English at 100 words a minute. We were stunned - but not nearly as much as his father! His sister Ilka was shyer to start with, but she was soon in control, and the two of them talked to us in English until they had to go home at 8:30. We had seen Ilka as a baby...before she won last year’s Bavarian State Championship for Flautist for her age. The three clearly get on well, but on all of them it must be so hard.

The plan is to see Max again tomorrow so he can get more than the odd word in, maybe listen to Ilka's flute practice if the teacher allows and it is possible, and wander more through the town. We are also considering one of Max's suggestions for Wed/Thurs; Leipzig.

The Messerschmidt hotel is big, bright, quiet and clean, with excellent wifi. No tea or coffee, but that's about the only flaw.

14,188 steps, 10.9km and 1 flight (which has to be wrong after the ups and downs at the stations...)

      Bamberg, Germany

      24 juni 2022, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

As we walked on the shady path next to a river that many locals were taking a dip in, Mabel said "you walk a little billit, then I ride a little billit." Meaning that she walks some and then is carried some along our excursions. I love the way she verbalized it. We have been doing a lot of walking. Later, after our Bamberg trip she called the movie Pinocchio, "Poky Noky!" Stinkin' cute!

Those of you with kids can sing along... Do you like bacon? Yes, I do. Yes, I do. Do you like beer? Yes, I do. Yes, I do. Do you like bacon beer? NO! Or at least I don't. This town is famous for its smoked dark beer. It tastes as if you are drinking smoked bacon or meat. Seth and his friend thoroughly enjoyed it, but hard pass for me. The Schlenkerla is a historic brewery that specializes in this beer.

After the brewery, we ventured to feed our hungry critters a leberkäse brötchen. This sandwich did not appear appetizing to me, as it was described to be a meat sponge made from left over meat parts. However, it was quite tasty. The kids devoured the warm meat "sponge" sandwiched inside a soft, crumbly bun.

Once we "fueled" up, we began exploring Bamberg. The views in this town were amazing everywhere you looked. The scenery from the bottom on the cobblestone streets provided close ups of old architecture, tall towering cathedrals with gaudy gold accents, while the view from above in the rose garden allowed for a panoramic view of the town. The height and stonework on the four towers of the cathedral were just remarkable. I cannot imagine how much blood, sweat and tears went into building these collasal towers.

Nearing the end of our hot day in Bamberg, the kids were melting, so we ice creamed them up. I tried an orange basil ice cream that was quite refreshing.

On our way home, we stopped for dinner at the Spezial-Keller Biergarten, which is just outside the city. This place has such a picturesque view of Bamberg, shade and a lovely playground for kids to get their wiggles out, while parents relax.

What a lovely day with our friend as our tour guide!

      Day 13: Bamberg, Germany

      16 juli 2022, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

It was a tough day of cycling with a lot of ups and downs, and a headwind. When we arrived in Bamberg we took a spin through town to see some of the sites. Since it was Saturday, and there was a magic show festival going on, it was super busy and difficult to get through the crowds. We arrived at our Warmshower hosts at 7:00 pm, And got cleaned up quickly, started some laundry, and headed out for a walking tour and dinner. It was another fun day, but we were definitely exhausted and ready for bed after eating some traditional Bavarian food and beer.Läs mer

      Dag 15

      31 juli 2023, Tyskland

Oj denna förmiddag började riktigt knasigt. GPS ledde oss in i den smala bergiga staden Bamberg.

      Bamberg

      15 maj 2015, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

We left this morning for Bamburg, an important city in medieval Bavaria. Dmitri our guide led us on a walking tour of an ancient town that was as lovely as any of the towns we have visited over the last week. I feel as though I'm drinking from a fire hose. The cathedral was impressive but not as beautiful as the one in Wurzburg. I was impressed with the courtyard around the original palace of Hendricus II, which dates from the tenth century. The filming of a recent film version of The Three Musketeers was filmed at the site. We passed a hotel owned by the Messerschmidt family. This is the house in which the famous aircraft designer for the Third Reich was born. His father was an innkeeper here, and the house is still a hotel run by the Messerschmidt family. At the end of the tour we walked back to the Green Plaza, where green grocers originally sold their wares, got an ice cream cone, and photographed the Jesuit church. We got some free time at the end of the tour, and we spent it in a park. There was an evangelical youth group singing in German very loud rock songs about Jesus. It is hard to see that anyone would find such evangelism attractive. I walked to the nearby Jesuit church and took photos. Glenda waited for me on an interesting set of concrete pillars sitting beside a splashing pool in the public park. Near the cathedral, which was dark and forbidding, a bride was making preparations for her wedding. I snapped a shot, and her groom looked displeased. However, later when we were at the brewery, we met some of the wedding party's family, and they were very pleasant people indeed!Läs mer

      Bamberg

      12 oktober 2020, Tyskland ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

      Sommertag in Bamberg

      11 juni 2022, Tyskland ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

      26 december 2017, Tyskland ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

There wasn’t a lot to see at Bemberg. It is a very old town but doesn’t have a castle or any other major attraction. We wandered around the town and there were some interesting buildings which were very old, some to 800 years old. One thing I did try here is their famous smoky beer.Läs mer
