Nach dem antiken Teil der Stadt ging es nun in den modernen. Als erstes zum Parlamentsgebäude und dem Grab des unbekannten Soldaten. Ein Grab des unbekannten Soldaten ist eine besondere Form eines Kriegdenkmal, das an die nicht identifizierbaren gefallenen Soldaten des Landes erinnert. Dieses wird durch Wachen 💂🏼 in traditioneller Uniform. Die Bommel an den Füssen und der Rock fallen dabei besonders ins Auge 👁️‍🗨️. Stündlich findet ein kleiner Wachwechsel statt, die Bewegungen fallen da gewöhnungsbedürftig aus. Danach ging es zum Mittagessen, griechischer Salat 🥗, Fleischbällchen mit Tzatziki 🧆 und nochmals Zucchini-Pommes 🍟. Das Essen werde ich bestimmt vermissen. Am Nachmittag ging es noch in einige Kirchen ⛪ und noch etwas Souvenir-Shopping 🧿 🫒.Lue lisää

The changing of the guard

This Christmas morning, after sending and receiving messages from friends and family, we set off to watch the changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Presidential Mansion on Syntagma Square.

The changing of the guard takes place every hour on the hour every day of the year. On every day except Sunday the Greek guards or 'Evzones' wear khaki uniforms. On Sundays, however, they wear their ceremonial white dresses which are instantly recognisable throughout the world. And at 11am on Sundays, there is an extra special changing of the guard ceremony involving many more soldiers and a marching band.

As luck would have it, Christmas Day has fallen on a Sunday this year and we are fortunate to be in the city to witness the pageantry.

As our tourist bus tickets were still valid, we caught that from the Acropolis Museum, arriving at Syntagma Square just in time for the 10am changing of the guard ceremony. There were very few people about so we were able to get some good photos and video of what was going on. I really need to do some research on why the guards March in the unique way they do. I'm sure it was them who inspired John Cleese's Ministry of Silly Walks! 😀

After the ceremony, to kill time until the main event at 11, we wandered through the National Garden, a 16-hectare oasis of greenery in the centre of the city. There are thousands of century-old trees and a couple of ornamental lakes with turtles 🐢 and lots of varieties of water birds.

It was a very peaceful way to spend part of Christmas morning - until the peace was shattered by the sound of a band tuning up. We followed the noise and emerged from the south entrance to the garden right next to the guards' barracks where the parade was starting from. How lucky were we?? We walked alongside the band and soldiers all the way to the front of the Parliament building where the changing of the guard ceremony takes place.

Once there, there were crowds of people, meaning we couldn't get near. We didn't care, though. We'd seen it all an hour before!Lue lisää

Heute ging es nach Athen. Nach der Wachablösung inklusive Choreo der Evzonen vor dem griechischen Parlament (die komplett affig aussah), ging es in das kleine Kykladen-Dorf Anafiotika. Dieses ist aus Wohnungsmangel Mitte des 19. Jhd. am Fuß der Akropolis entstanden, sollte eigentlich wieder abgerissen werden und wird heute allerdings von den Bewohnern gepflegt und deshalb geduldet.
Danach ging es zu den berühmtesten alten Steinen Griechenlands, von wo man einen tollen Blick über die Stadt Athen erhaschen konnte.
Die kleinen hatten außerdem Spaß in der U-Bahn.

Mit dem Flugzeug bin ich von Stockholm nach Athen geflogen. Der Flug kostete 45 SFr. Ich war eine Nacht in Athen Hawks Hostel. Es war sehr billig. Ich bezahlte 21 SFr. für eine Nacht. Das Hotel war sehr schön für das dass es so billig war. Ich war am berühmten Akropolis und es war sehr schön weil es älter war und wunderschön aussah. Es kostete mich 19,36 SFr.Lue lisää

Charlotte and I travelled with long-time friends, Maureen and Lesley, who now live in Houston. After an overnight flight, we landed in Greece at 11:00 a.m. local time after a 10hr direct flight from Toronto on Air Canada. The time difference is +7hrs.
We shared a cab to our respective hotels which were only 5 minutes walk apart. After settling in briefly, we went out exploring and got a sense for how busy and touristy Athens is!
The weather for our three days in Athens was spectacular - 24 to 26 degrees Celsius with beautiful sunsets.Lue lisää

Predsednikova garda - Evzoni

Srečo sem imel, da sem ujel menjavo gardistov pred grobnico neznanemu vojaku, postavljeno pred predsedniško palačo.

Menjava je čista ceremonija, fajn za videt in polna neke simbolike. Od vsega so mi še najbolj padli v oko in uho njihovi čevlji, t.i. Tsarouhi, ročno narejeni iz trdega rdečega usnja. Vsak par tehta cirka tri kile in ima 120 žebljev, na prstkih pa cofke, s katerimi se je dalo skriti rezila, ki naj bi jih uporabljali v borbah mož-na-moža.

Onto Greece!

Today we leave our beautiful tour group and head to Greece ❤️
I don't have the words to describe the impact of this tour.. But I'll try anyway.. Some thoughts on the Holy Land of Israel and Jordan..everywhere you look there is evidence of conflict.. from 2000 years ago to very recent wars in my lifetime and unrest on the borders today. Israel's hostile neighbours are sooo close, and even within the state of Israel the different religious groups living at such close quarters strike a tenuous kind of peace that seems very fragile.
Unlike Australia whose government seems focused on finding reasons to exclude refugees, Israel has assimilated thousands upon thousands of Jews, believing they DESERVE to be there.. Such a different way of looking at it..a definite miracle in the way the state of Israel has developed in recent history
Walking on the very ground where our Lord trod, and seeing the undeniable proof here has been a faith strengthening experience we will never forget. Likewise, visiting the 7 churches in Asia minor (Turkey) has been an eye opener. At times I felt like I was in a Sunday School play.. bringing the stories to life!!
Reading the Bible and singing certain hymns will hold a far greater significance now. I feel as if I am seeing things in colour for the first time. It's been emotional and mind blowing. As a side benefit (and possibly even more precious) we have made many new connections that I feel will be lifelong friends ❤️
Most days on the bus we sang this song, which has become our theme song.."Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you.. We have come with open hearts.. Oh let the ancient words impart"🎶
(In other news.. a highlight of the trip was facetiming Caleb who learnt to say 'Granny' while we were away 😍❤️)
Tonight we arrived safely at Athens and had a brief explore in the balmy evening.. beautiful cobblestone streets with cool live music and eateries. Can't wait to see it in daylight tomorrow!Lue lisää

Königliches Schloss & die Tsoliades

Unser nächste Ziel war das griechische Parlament, vor dem gerade die stündliche Wachablösung der Tsoliades stattfand. Das Griechische Parlament ist das Parlament Griechenlands, das heute im Alten Schloss am Syntagma-Platz in Athen residiert. Das Parlament besteht aus einer Kammer und 300 auf vier Jahre gewählte Mitglieder. Das Schloss wurde 1836 bis 1843 durch König Otto von Griechenland erbaut. Bis 1922 war es der Sitz der Könige von Griechenland. Seit 1935 ist es der Sitz des Parlaments von Griechenland. Vor dem Parlament steht das Grabmal des Unbekannten Soldaten. Im Jahr 1925 beschloss die griechische Regierung, ein Denkmal für die namenlosen Kriegsopfer zu errichten. Die Sprüche auf beiden Seiten stammen von dem Historiker Thukydides. Auf der linken Seite steht: "Es gibt eine leere Bahre für die Unbekannten Gefallenen" und auf der rechten Seite: "Die ganze Erde ist die Grabstätte berühmter Männer." An den Wänden stehen die Namen bedeutender Schlachten. Sehr bezeichnend für das Schloss sind auch die traditionellen Soldaten, welche vor dem Schloss Wache stehen. Die rocktragenden Tsoliades bewachen das Denkmal. Sie werden in der Regel aus den griechischen Spezialeinheiten der Armee ausgewählt. Ihre Uniform hat sich aus der Kleidung der Klephten entwickelt, die gegen die Osmanen kämpften. Sie besteht aus einem roten Fez mit einer Seidenquaste, einem weißen Hemd mit weiten Ärmeln, einer Wolljacke mit dunkelblauer Kordelstickerei, einer knielangen Fustanella aus weißem Stoff mit vierhundert Falten (die Dauer der osmanischen Herrschaft in Griechenland), weißen Wollstrümpfen mit schwarzen Strumpfbändern und Schnabelschuhen mit schwarzen Quasten. Ein Teil der Wachablösung konnten wir noch sehen, dann ging’s wieder weiter.Lue lisää

Das Zappeion

Unser nächstes Ziel war ein sehr mächtiges und schönes Gebäude, in das wir leider nicht rein durften. Das Zappeion wurde 1888 gebaut. Die Errichtung erfolgte zur Erfüllung des Vermächtnisses von Evangelos Zappas, dem Begründer der Olympien (eines Vorläufers der Olympischen Spiele). Dieser hatte nach seinem Tod den größten Teil seines Vermögens dem Komitee der Olympien unter der Bedingung vermacht, eine geeignete Stätte für die Olympien zu errichten. Heute ist das Zappeion ein Kongresszentrum, weswegen Touristen auch keinen Zutritt zum sehr schönen Innenhof haben. Viele bedeutende Termine fanden hier in der Vergangenheit statt. 1979 zum Beispiel die Unterschrift zum Beitritt Griechenlands zur Europäischen Gemeinschaft.Lue lisää
