Arrived to the island of Skopelos yesterday by ferry boat from Skiathos. Both of these islands are part of the Sporades, a group of islands in the Northern Aegean. Skopelos does not have an airport, so tourists must visit by ferry or private charter. Because of this, the tourism is less catered to nightlife and party-seekers and more to site-seeing and relaxation. Skopelos Town

The main port town on Skopelos is stunning with beautiful views of the water, mountains, and traditional architecture. Of all the places I've been to in Greece, skopelos seems to have maintained it's architectural integrity in place. The red ceramic roofs against the white buildings with the natural colors of the natural surroundings are breathtaking. like most port towns in greece, the town is "organized" in a labyrinthine fashion, where it's easy to lose your way. If you do get lost, just remember that up takes you to the mountain and down takes you to the water.Læs mere

Skopelos has over 300 churches and dozens of monasteries. The Church of Panagitsa tou Pyrgou is located at the port entrance of the main town, Chora, and is an easy walk fro the ground. It was built around 1760 and is post-Byzantine, as are most churches on the Island.Læs mere

Stafilos Beach

Located about 4 kilometers from Chora is Stafilos Beach. The beach is organized with beach chairs and there is a little Cafe serving refreshments. The surrounding area is typical of Skopelos ' beauty, with stone cliffs, pine trees, and blue-green water. The beach is named for Stafilos, one of Dionysos' sons. Stafilos comes from the Greek word for grapes. Dionysos was worshipped on Skopelos in antiquity, ever since the ancient Minoans colonized the island and brought grapes and olive trees about 1600 BC.Læs mere

Velanio Beach

This is a beach only accessible by boat or by walking a path from Stafilos beach. At the end of the beach are several areas where fresh water drips from the rocks cliff. The area was used in antiquities as a Roman bath, taking advantage of the fresh water. The beach is stunning. It is not organized, meaning there is no cafe or beach chairs, or a lot of shade for that matter.Læs mere

Fresh Water at Velario Beach

At Velaria beach there is fresh water that drips from the mountain wall. These springs have been used for thousands of years. The area was known as a bathing area since at least Roman times.

Milia Beach

Today I went to the beautiful Milia beach on the western coast of Skopelos. The bus stop is high up from the beach and it's about a ten minute walk down. The good thing was that the road down was through a dense pine forest so there was plenty of cover. This beach has interesting rock formations in the water that are easy to swim to, and there is an uninhabited island in the distance (Dassia) which I did a small watercolor of.Læs mere
