    The morning started out overcast but dry as I made my way back from Chiang Rai, but around noon the skies opened up and it poured cats and dogs. So much so, that while Boob-a-lube was out doing his daily saunter, he thought the hash would be cancelled as the streets were well over ankle deep in many areas. Alas, a pack of more than a dozen hashers eventually turned up for the start. There was a question of which side of the street we would start from, either in the parking lot in the rain, or on the other side of the street under cover. Several of us hashers played “frogger” getting back and forth across the street until a decision was finally made . . . in the end, it did not matter. We had to get back on the parking lot side of the street anyway as that is where the trail was.

    Heading down the main drag for a couple hundred meters, trail cut left and back under a bridge and down onto a klong path. There was plenty of that as we crossed back and forth over several wooden makeshift bridges and eventually getting back onto the streets. Hitting a T, trail turned left and again just after passing over a bridge, trail turned hard right and down under and through a small park, then parking lot, and popped out on a side street. By this time, it was drizzling on us, and it was dark. Boob got to the second bridge crossing, and not finding the cut back . . . he did what Boob does, he made his own way back to the beer. At least 4 of the runners found the whole trail, enjoying splashing through several puddles, parking lots, crossing bridges, while searching for trail. The hares claimed true trail was only 8 kms, but the runners clocked up between 11-12 kms with all the exploration. Overall, it was a most excellent trail, many thanks to our hares.    Lue lisää

    Heading out exit 4 at Bang Bua Station, we started by following a short hash trail through the ville to the start location. Slippery When Wet was out hare for the day, and she set an interesting trail that was much more fun running than what appears on the map. Right about 4 kms into trail, we rounded a corner and found a false trail. The pack spread out and looked in at least a half dozen possible directions, with no luck. Finally, Codpiece went back around the corner and looked at the last street we passed . . . and there it was. Calling on on, the pack soon rejoined trail for the final 4 kms back to the finish.

    Around the circle, we had a couple out of town visitors, and even a couple local visitors . . . but it was Circle Jerk from Canada (and Ecuador) who was dressed up as the TITS of the WEEK. After circle, the pack headed back toward the train station for dinner and drinks. Food soon flooded the table, and it kept coming, and coming . . . I think there was as much left on the table after dinner, as we actually ate. It was another humid and sweaty, but very fun trail in Bangkok.

    Next move, the train to Pangandaran

    After arriving at airport, and catching a taxi to the train station, we had several hours to wait. We found a few things to do while hanging out at the train station all day, but mostly just eating and playing on the phone. Then, as scheduled, we boarded the train at 10 PM for the 7 hour overnight ride to Pangandaran. Unfortunately, there was NO beer on the train.Lue lisää

    Pan Asia Hash 2022 - Arrival

    Upon arrival, check in and colleting goodie bags was very smooth. There was a ton of goodies to haul away . . . 3 shirts, hooded wind breaker, a pair of shorts, hat, patch, sticker, key chain, tattoo sleeve, hydro flask, cloth bag, and an actual collapsible suitcase.     PAN ASIA HASH 2022 (6-9 Oct 22)

    It was a well-coordinated and managed event, and I have seen a few. The venue was in Pangandaran, Indonesia, but most of the nearly 3000 hashers that arrived from abroad flew into Jakarta on the 6th. A 45 minute taxi to the train station saw a growing pack anxious to board the prearranged trains for the 7 hour overnight trip, arriving early Friday morning. But there’s more . . . departing the train, we still had about an hour on busses for the final delivery to the Villa Allure in Pangandaran. Upon arrival, we were immediately afforded the opportunity to check in and get our goodie bags, and what a haul they were. We received 3 shirts (one with matching shorts), hooded wind breaker, hat, patch, sticker, key chain, tattoo sleeve, hydro flask, cloth bag, and an actual collapsible suitcase. I had to leave most of it behind due to the limits of my travel experience and living out of a backpack. After dropping everything off in our hotel rooms (and sorting through all the goodies), it was time to go meet the other hashers and find the beer. The day was mostly overcast, and by the time we rallied for the Red Dress Run that afternoon, it was a steady drizzle. The trail was mostly just a pass through down town Pangandaran, and down along the beach, before returning to the venue for the evening party. The food was excellent, and the entertainments was . . . LOUD. Lots of fun, but some of us needed a couple hours sleep before the main event on Saturday.

    Having rained all night, and quite hard at times, we all wondered how that might affect the trails. The Ball Buster was listed as a 25 Kms adventure that would take in 3 beaches, some jungle trails, and finish back at the venue. After a 45 minute bus ride to the start, on 4 busses, the pack of over 200 hashers were ready to take on the day. By this time, the rain had tapered off, and some small glimpses of blue sky started to poke out. We were informed that, due to the hard rain overnight, that the trial would be closer to 20 kms. Getting the final countdown, the pack took off downhill, only to turn hard left and back up another hill, slipping and sliding our way along. Eventually reaching the beach, the next 5 kms on the sand, crossing waterfalls and streams, scaling some cliffs, and climbing some hills, before turning inland. Then it was lots of mud and ankle to knee high water puddles up to 50 meters across. Eventually we got closer into town, and drier tracks. In the end, it was an excellent adventure. My only complaint about the weekend, was upon finishing the 20 kms back to the venue, no one had thought to tap the kegs yet. Made due by hitting the showers and putting on dry clothes. By the time we returned, the party was in full swing. A late night of fun, food, beer, and craziness ensued.

    Sunday had us lining back up for the busses to the days adventures. I chose the Green Canyon trail, which was about an hour bus ride out to the location. Trail was only about 6 kms, but was very scenic, and muddy. Upon finishing, the blocks of ice were waiting, and everyone was escorted in to take a seat and scull a beer. Some of the taller visitors were ushered to the ice several times, which I did not resist much. The beer was tasting pretty good. After returning to the venue, it was another afternoon/evening of dinner, dancing, and frivolity. A massive fireworks display ended the evening, and one more night of sleep before everyone headed to their bus for transport back to the train, or to their hometowns. I caught a ride with some hashers going home to Bandung, where my adventure in Indonesia will continue for another week.

    We held a meeting to coordinate the next Pan Asia selection, and attempted to get it back on the odd year cycle. Unfortunately, the bidders did not feel comfortable with only one year to plan . . . so the next Pan Asia will take place in 2024 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, [rego is open - https://www.pah2024.com ] followed by the next one in 2025.     On On to Bandung & end of 3 years

    After an awesome Pan Asia Hash event, it was time to move on. Next stop . . . Bandung. The bus ride was only 225 kms, but with the narrow, twisting, and packed roads (and lunch), it took 10 hours.

    Three years ago today, I took off from Honolulu on this trip. Never would have guessed it would have lasted this long.

    Here I am in Bandung, Indonesia . . . and what a day it was. I departed Pan Asia Hash on Monday morning, and the plan was to come to Bandung and see the sights . . . and find a couple hash clubs. Well, we arrived too late on Monday (after the 10 hour bus ride) to catch the Bandung Monday Hash, but I set out to find any other clubs in the city. There has never been a country page of hash contacts for Indonesia, but my plan on coming here was to figure one out. So scanning the HHH Genealogy, I found most of the clubs that were once here, had passed on to join G at the big old on-home in the sky. Fortunately, I did find a few hash clubs still active, and with a presence of some sort on the WWW. Case in point, today I was able to run with the Pola H3.

    It was not easy to get to the start, as I had spent two days trolling their FB page in order to get a specific start location. After two day so of no luck, I extended my reach by friending the hasher that posted the most info, and asked her. Priscilla got back to me very quickly, and gave me a street address. Google Maps showed it was about 15 Kms to the north, on the edge of the city. Unable to read those directions, I just made a little placard of the address, and took it to the taxi stand in front of the hotel. I showed it to him, and hoped for the best in the true spirit of hashing adventure.

    About 45 minutes to an hour later, and only 15 kms away, through the tiny streets and heavy traffic, we pull up this road until I see some people on the side of the road in brightly colored shirts. Ahhh, I figured these must be hashers. Good guess, well, at least one of them was. He spoke just enough English that he understood why I was there, and he told me he was just finishing trail, and on his way to the end. He took me down the hill until we hit the out trail, and he pointed me to it. Fortunately, at that moment I saw two hashers ahead in the distance, and ran forward to catch them. I told them I was just there to hash, and would follow along as I had no idea how the trail would be marked. They looked at me as some sort of Martian, and waved me along. 😊

    What I could understand of the instructions on FB, were that there was three trails . . . short (5K), medium (8K), and long (12K). It was just starting to drizzle, so when they said they were planning to do the medium trail, I quickly agreed. They didn’t say much for the first couple KMs, but eventually one of these fine gentlemen started asking me a few questions. We chatted off and on throughout the trail, and by the end we had made enough headway that he offered to drive me back into town. Now that was good fortune, because we were so far off the beaten path that I had wondered how I would ever find a taxi this far out of town.

    Anyway, we finished trail, and found a few hashers gathered at the on-in. Now, I should tell you that the Pola Hash is still following the COVID standard of setting trail in the morning, and allowing hashers to follow trail at anytime during the day. This explains why there were so few hashers seen on trail, and so few at the end. I paid my hash cash (~US $1.25), and had a few snacks, and some water. They serve no beer due to the current set up, but my new friend Nanang, said we would stop for a beer and dinner on the way back to town. Talk about the power of meeting and befriending local/visiting hashers. I should also add here, that within 10 minutes of us finishing trail, the skies opened up and it poured like Noah was just about finished with the ark. This gave me a chance to talk to a few other hashers, while we waited for the rain to settle before heading back to town.

    After about a 45 minute drive back towards city center, as the streets are flooding from the downpour, Nanang pulls into a side street and parks. By this time, the rain has tapered off, but the flooding continued. We saunter into a happy looking pub, and order up the first round of beers. Looking at the menu, I respond to his questions with . . . I would just like some local food. I ended up with a lovely feast of soup and rice, along with some chips. We chatted for a while, and after a few more beers, he asks if I want to go hiking on Friday. BING, I waste no time in saying that would be awesome . . . so dropping me off at my hotel, he says he’ll send me a note on Friday for around a 1 pm departure for a hike in the mountains, along with one of his friends.

    This is the power of the hash . . . and the wonderful friendships that form between hashers that were recent strangers, that a bond quickly forms. It’s a beautiful thing. Come back and see the pictures after the hike on Friday. On On.    Lue lisää

    Trail was up in Lembang, a few kms away from where we ran on Wednesday. It was an excellent trail up in the mountains, but not hard enough, as my friend Nanang wanted to go all the way up to the crest . . . so we did. Making our own Super Eagle Trail, we covered 16 kms over about 4+ hours, finishing the final 3 or 4 kms in the dark. Good times here in Indonesia.

    I would like to start with the fact that I am so fortunate to be able to visit hash clubs all over the world. For the past 10 days I enjoyed Pan Asia Hash in Pangandaran, and a few days here in Bandung. Bandung is actually a hash megacenter, as you can hash at least 5 days a week. There are so many clubs, as shown

    I enjoyed trails with the Pola H3 on Wednesday, Bandung H3 2 on Friday, and Bandung H3 + today. All were amazing trails, with friendly hashers, but today was just one of those special days.

    Start was at 1400, so I jumped in a taxi to the start and made it just in time, but hardly anyone was there yet. On the way, the skies dropped a couple of showers, but when I arrived it was ok. As the pack arrived over the next 45 minutes, we had a point where for about 10 minutes it poured like hell. We all thought the trail had been washed away, but we were soon to find out that the paper held up quite well. OK, back to the start. With all the rain, my expectations for the day were quite low, even the hares thought we might have to just go out and wander around and come back. But the paper held up, and we had what I called, one of the best trails I have run in a long time.

    First off, there were many runners. The Bandung H3 + is a younger crowd, mostly expat, and enthusiastic runners. So I was happy for that and took off in pursuit. We had over 35 hashers in the circle, but we had a solid pack of a dozen runners having a ball running in an off and on drizzle of rain. The local hashers may have run this area many times, but I was loving the new twists and turns, slippery spots, and dirt paths. It was the quintessential old city trail, where you are inside the city, but running through all the hidden shiggy, dirt tracks, and stairs that have been constructed over many decades. If I had a go-pro, I would have liked to record this one, and show it as an example of how amazing hashing really is. I love being out in the farmer’s fields and rice paddies, but I also really enjoy running those back allies and stairs of the old world.

    Drenched from the rain the entire trail, and with all sorts of slippery spots, trail was such a blast to navigate. The pack of runners continuously circulated from first to worst and back again, as we explored many check points. Finishing in just over 8 Kms, the end popped up by total surprise for me, which is another sign of an amazing trail. I took the opportunity to thank the hares in circle for this spectacular day . . . I don’t like the trend of everyone just saying it was a SHITTY TRAIL and abuse the hares. I always thank the hares, no matter what, but on those special occasions, I like to really say thank you.     Circle was a rousing affair, lasting over an hour. Everyone stayed engaged, so the RA was doing a great job. And yes, when they appreciate my songs and ask for more, that is always a special circle. Dinner followed, and I got to talk to many of the pack. It was a tremendous and awesome day on the hash . . . but tomorrow it will be time to make a move. Catching the train at 6 am, for Jakarta. On On.    Lue lisää

    I have been to Perth many times, but this is my first time with the boys of SOPH3. We had a pack of 29 for this 7 km trail, and although it was all sidewalks and roads, it was a fairly entertaining trail. We had a robust group of about a dozen runners, and we blazed along at a pretty good clip for a hash. Circle was very entertaining, with song, jokes, and banter. Did not hurt that there were stacks of hot pizza delivered either. Good run, good grub, and good fun.Lue lisää

    Another excellent 8+ Km nighttime trail in Perth tonight. Start was at 7 pm, but trail was very well marked and I didn’t even need a torch to follow along in the dark. There were about 30 in the pack all together (and I looked like one of the youngest there), with a solid dozen or so runners up front.

    Circle was also excellent, with songs and jokes, and funny commentary. We had dinner served after the circle, of nice hot pizza, and fun was had by all.

    It was an overcast Sunday afternoon, and it had been drizzling all morning. By the time we set off on trail, the rain had mostly stopped, but everything was wet and a bit chilly. Although I have felt very good running in the cooler weather lately, so there’s that. Anyway, trail was mostly just run, there were only a few checks, and they all seemed to be straight forward, but it was a good 7 km run. Circle was short and to the point, and we had a rice stir fry sort of thing for eats. A good day on the hash.Lue lisää

    I knew it had been a while since the last time I ran with the old boys of Hamersley, but was surprised to see it had been 17 years. Way back in 2005 on a previous visit to Perth, I had snagged a run. Not much has changed, it is definitely a mates hash, just the guys. We had about 40 in the pack, and about 15 FRBs up the front during the run. It was a cool evening, but the 8 km trail was good and a fun time.

    Circle was hilarious, as they traded barbs over the most mundane of things. This hash has some seriously long time members, and you can tell who they are. I saw the presentation of a 35 YEAR hat, and looking around the circle, there were several red and blue hats, emblazoned with everything from 20 to 40 year members, in 5 year increments. It was good to run with them again, a fun evening.    Lue lisää

    Got in a good run with the ladies. There were no rules explained (but I anticipated there may be some) in the opening discussion, so I just took off running with the pack. After running out ahead and finding the first 3 or 4 false trails, and breaking the first check about a mile and half into it, a woman comes up beside me and quietly says "we have a rule here, that all men must stay behind two sets of bouncing buns." And so I did. There was only about a mile left to go, so I was on my best behavior. :)

    The H4 stands for Hash House Harriers Hoons . . . This was my 6th hash over the past week (5 of them in Perth, Australia), but one I have been waiting for . . . for many years. I have heard about all the great hashing in the Jakarta area for many years, and finally got here. The trail did not disappoint. It took almost an hour to get to the run start near Bogor, leaving from central Jakarta. Meeting in the driveway to a local dump, the stench was bit off putting, but we were soon enough on trail. Normally a men only club, for this special event the UMs were allowed to join in. An A to B affair that was 9 kms of single file tracks most of the way, from alleyways, to rice paddies, to dirt paths. You had to be paying close attention in many spots, as running along on the rice paddies, they get narrow, and sometimes what looks like solid ground with grass, actually has nothing underneath it. I took a handful of tumbles along the way, but managed a soft landing each time.

    Circle was like a speed dating scene. It was rapid fire down downs, knocking out over a dozen in the first 10 minutes. I made a comment to The Penguin, and he said the circle would be quick . . . but it went on for nearly two hours, and over 100 down downs (they actually kept count). It was a laugh a minute, with plenty of barbs between hashers. Today will be a day of rest before kicking off the Jakarta 50th Anniversary Celebration (delayed 19 months due to the pandemic) tomorrow.    Lue lisää

    This was the celebration of the Jakarta H3’s 50th Anniversary, delayed by 19 months due to the pandemic. Originally founded on 22 Mar 1971, the Jakarta H3 was the first hash club in Indonesia (the history can be read here, if interested [http://harrier.org/.../Week-of-Mon-20150629/008…].

    The hares went all out to make this a special trail, and carted by bus for 2 hours, to a location south of Bogor. There were nearly 100 hashers signed up, with many old time Jakarta hashers flying in for the event.

    Trail options included a short (7.5 km), medium (10 km), and long (12+ KM). There was plenty of climbing, and many amazing views of the local environment . . . and tons of shiggy. We even passed a waterfall. The long trail was grueling and took me 3 hours to complete, but well worth the effort. At the end, there was plenty of eat and drink before the circle kicked off.     After a great weekend of partying to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the JH3, we had one final run last evening. There were still 29 hounds available to make the journey to the “Road to Nowhere” down near Bogor. After a few introductions, we set off on yet another amazing trail of mostly single file shiggy tracks through the local fields, including a couple small water crossings.

    As the pack began gathering again at the finish, we huddled around the umbrellas as the rain came a calling. The last few hounds came in just after dark, in the pouring rain . . . but then, the skies dried up, and we had a dry circle of fun for about an hour. Great jokes and songs, and just when it couldn’t get any better . . . it did. Hot pizza rolled in to finish off the evening. Well done hares, and thanks!
