    Ithaca H3 #994

After a week of family time, I am now back on the war path in search of hash trails. Started today by joining the Ithaca H3 just an hour away from my childhood home, but this hash club did not start until several years after I had rolled out to seek my life’s fortune . . . and actually 4 years after I started hashing. But many years of visiting home, it was not until 2 years ago that I actually got over to run with them . . . and today was only the second time, but this is also the start of a big road trip up through New England visiting several new hash clubs in Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

No matter how far and wide one travels, there is always going to be more new hash clubs to run with. 😊 😊 Today’s trail was an excellent 4 mile shiggy trail through the Finger Lakes National Forest. After a fun circle, we had a pool party, then an On On On at a local Italian Restaurant. It was a great day, and a good kick off to this leg of hash exploration.

  • On the road, from Ithaca to Syracuse

    8. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Making my way from Ithaca to Syracuse today for my next hash adventure, I had a leisurely yet amazingly beautiful drive up along Cayuga Lake. Saw numerous vineyards and cider mills, along with all the grapes and apple orchards, and many fields of corn and other agricultural commodities. Made a couple stops along the way to see some sights, including the Women’s Rights National Historic Park in Seneca Falls. Passed by Congress June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment legally guarantees American women the right to vote. It was a great day.Les mer

Announced as the 8th Anal Britney Bash, where everyone is supposed to dress up like Britney Spears . . . as two of the pack, also born on this day, along with BS herself, were the hares. It was a slightly larger pack than they normally get, with 30 present by the circle afterwards, it was a full on party atmosphere. Theme hashes are not my thing, but the pack seemed to be having a good time. It was hot all day, and by mid afternoon the temps were hovering around 95F. But then a storm blew threw and drenched the trail, washing away any mark that had been preset. As we set off, the lead hare ran along with us, but after a half mile he concluded that there were no marks left at all, and took off with a head start and reset trail.

I gotta be honest, the trail was not that great. Marks were sporadic, and we basically ran straight to the beer stop and back, with a second beer stop thrown in for good measure (so there was lots of standing around), but everyone was having a good time. I was told this is not their usual type of trail, so I’ll just chalk this one up as being in town for an event rather than a usual trail.

At the first beer stop, at a local craft brewery, they held a Britney Spears trivia contest, and gave out prizes, along with beers for everyone. The circle at the end was fun, with all the usual down downs, and then we had a birthday party with pizza and cake after. All in all, a fun time on my first trail with this hash club. Next week, they will be holding their 10th anniversary event, so cheers to the SOH4.

  • On the road from Syracuse to Stowe

    9. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Yesterday was a 6 hour drive from Syracuse, NY to Stowe, VT for the next hashing adventure. It was 250 miles of beautiful forested mostly two lane backroads, passing through many cool little towns in upstate New York. The final hour or so was through similar roads in Vermont.

Stowe is actually a winter ski haven, but has also become a summer getaway region with tons of hiking trails and craft breweries, small shops, and various restaurants. Very nice area to hang out for a couples days, while I get the opportunity to hash with the Burlington H3 tonight, about an hour away. More on that tomorrow after the hash.

I probably should have stopped to take more scenic pictures, but in many cases there was no place to pull off the road . . . so all the photos are from behind the wheel.

  • Burlington H3 #740

    10. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After a long drive up from Syracuse, NY . . . I was able to catch a trail in Burlington, Vermont. The instructions said to bring a flotation device, but I don’t have such things in my backpack, so just turned up and hoped for the best. Fortunately, one of the other hashers had an extra innertube and all was well. We had a pack of about a dozen, and shortly after the hares set off, we ran after them with an innertube over our head or wrapped around a shoulder, and made our way through the small town of Jeffersonville. We certainly must have looked funny running through the middle of town, and after about 2 miles we found ourselves on the shores of the Lamoille River.

The hares had arranged an assortment of shots there (I don't drink on trail, so just jumped into the water), before we all jumped on our tubes and started floating down river . . . but VERY slowly. The water was barely moving, and it would take us over an hour to go the one mile that was planned for trail. Not to mention that it was about 9:30 by the time we finished, and the last half hour was in pitch dark solitude (I think there was a consensus, that we all had had enough floating by that point), with nothing other than the laughs and yelps of our fellow hashers to let us know we were not alone on the river. Just in the last few minutes of floating, the nearly full moon popped up over the horizon and lit things up just a bit. The water was cold, but tolerable . . . right up until we jumped off our tubes, and the cold night air hit our backsides . . . THEN, we realized just how cold things could be.

With about a quarter mile walk back to the cars, we made a quick change to dry clothes, and had a short circle. With my teeth a chattering . . . I thanked the hares, and said goodbye to the pack, and headed back to Stowe for a hot shower and a warm bed. Many thanks to the Burlington H3 for a mostly fun day on the hash.

  • Stowe, Vermont to Portland, Maine

    11. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After an interesting visit to Vermont, and a fun day with the Burlington H3, it was time once again to move on. I had a leisurely 200 mile drive through New Hampshire, that included a stop in Gorham to have lunch and do my laundry, then a hike up the Rattle River Trail for a look around, and a skinny dip in a water hole. The drive into Maine was uneventful, and arrived just in time to check into the hotel and get changed, before heading to the hash.Les mer

  • Knightvillain H3 #306

    11. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

When I visited the Syracuse Hash on Monday, I mentioned that I had found hash clubs and would be hashing in Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. One of the hashers mentioned there were two hash clubs in Portland, but did not recall the name of the one on Thursday . . . so after a bit of looking around, I found an event listed for the Knightvillain H3 on Thursday. So after hashing in Vermont on Wednesday, it was a quick drive to Portland to join them. Given the name, and the fact there was a full moon the same night, I figured it may be the local FM Hash. But that is not the case, the Knightvillains run every Thursday evening, and as you can see above, this was their 306th.

Juggling the info on several new hash clubs in this region, I mistakenly thought it was starting at 6:30, but after checking into the hotel, I realized the start was at 6, so jumped in the car and off I went. The event listing as you can see in the pictures, stated the start was at 69 Providence, but clicking on it did not bring up a map. So copied and pasted that into Google Maps, and 69 Providence St popped up, only 4 miles away, so easy. Arriving at the street at 5:50, I slowly drove down the road looking for 69, and there was none . . . it went from 55 to 77 on the odd side of the street, so looked on the other side, just in case. Nothing. Wondering if it was just hashers changing the number for fun, I looked in Google Maps again, and noticed there was also a Providence Ave on the other side of town. I posted a question on their FB page, and got an immediate response that it was indeed on Providence Ave.

Making the 15 minute drive across town (South Portland is actually a different city), upon arrival I looked around for hashers. Nothing. Knocked on the door, no answer. So wondered if they had already started, and looked around for marks . . . nothing. Thinking I was either getting pranked, or something else hinky was going on, I sat in the car and waited for 15 minutes thinking if no one showed up, I’d just have to leave. But just before pulling away, two people who looked like hashers walked up, and confirmed this was the place. They walked around to the back yard, and found the hare, and in the end it was just 5 of us on trail.

Our hare set a fun trail around town, using blue chalk . . . unfortunately the streets are literally covered with blue spray painted arrows for future maintenance work. Close inspection was required for each mark throughout. Our pack of 4 hashers swerved our way through the first couple miles, and finding a check at one point, we split up and looked for marks. One went right, and I went straight and found only one mark. As I was coming back, I saw the hasher who went right coming my way, as if to say he found nothing. So I started heading over to the left to see if there were marks down that street. Well, after making a big loop back to the left I eventually came back to the check, and they were all gone. So figured they must have found the trail over to the right, and had run on . . . but did no mark the check. I ran out that way, and eventually found an arrow and followed the trail on to the finish another mile and a half or so away.

Upon arrival, I jokingly said thanks for marking the checks, only to find out that the pack had not found trail at that check, and had run the trail backwards to the start. So we had lots to talk about in circle, the hare got roasted for blue chalk, the pack got roasted (the other three) for giving up on trail, and fun was had by all. We all had a good laugh, drank some beers, sang some songs, and then started talking about the PorMe Hash scheduled for Saturday. Come to find out, it was a generic marker event, and there was no hare. In the end, arrangements were made, a hare volunteered, and now we have a trail for tomorrow . . . Hooray!

    13. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After the adventure that was the Knightvillain H3 a couple days ago, arrangements were made for the PorME H3 on Saturday. The Portland hashers are very friendly and accommodating, and our hare (Tight Lipped) set a fun romp around South Portland. This 3 mile A to B excursion took us from the Spring Point Tavern, out through Bug Light Park and down through Ferry Village ending at Trojan Horse’s house where we were treated with guacamole and salsa, followed by enchiladas of various fillings, after a short but impressive circle. Was great to meet the local hashers for a fun day, and many thanks to the hare and hostess for the hashpatality.Les mer

  • Hike to and on Seawall Beach

    14. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Sunday was a nice day for a beach walk, so headed out for a 10 Km hike over Morse Mountain to Seawall Beach on Small Point. It's beautiful out there.
It has been about 50 years since I was last in Maine, so have little recollection of my previous visit. It has been a blast hashing, and finding all sorts of seafood to dine on, as well as doing some walking around seeing the sites. Next stop, Massachusetts.

  • Boston H3

    17. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

It was just a short drive into Boston, so got in fairly early. Could not check into the hotel until 3 pm, so spent a few hours wandering around the city. After getting settled at the hotel, it was just a short less than 10 minute walk to the start of trail.

I had the pleasure to join them for their annual ANYTHING BUT CLOTHES (ABC) hash last night. ABC means, as they describe . . . “Come to this hash wearing absolutely anything you want, as long as it isn't clothing. Shirt? No. Trash bags? Yes! Shorts? No. Caution tape? Yes! A cat onesie? No. A dozen live cats strapped to your body? Yes! The more creative the better.” While many just ran in a trash bag, some of the costumes were very creative . . . one had on 6 backpacks taped to her front/back, arms, and legs. Another had on a watermelon pool innertube, while one of the hares (winner of best costume) had on a dress fashioned out of blue medical masks.

Special shout out to NAMBLA who turned up . . . we keep crossing paths all over the country. 🙂

Since I am traveling light, and don’t really give a !@#!# about themes, (as you might suspect) I showed up in regular hash gear. With a theme like this, I was expecting it was going to be a lot of walking and standing around . . . BUT, thank goodness, the Boston H3 is an actual running hash. There were two drink stops that had us standing around a bit, but for the most part, we were hauling ass along trail at a nice clip . . . I loved it. It was an excellent 5+ mile, A to B trail, but the pack of about 30 finished close together, as there were hardly any walkers, and the circle was very entertaining. Heard several new songs, and the pack mostly paid attention to what was going on. Overall, an excellent evening hash.

Another short drive today, from Boston to Nashua, New Hampshire. Trail tomorrow is in Milford, but could not find any hotels there, so just 10 miles away in Nashua is fine. Will spend a couple days here, maybe also the weekend, and then move on to Albany for trail next Wednesday.Les mer

  • Seacoast H3 #242

    20. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

My first hash in New Hampshire, and it was a beautiful day for a run in Milford. Overall, it was a great day. The hashers were all super friendly, and our three hares set a great trail over hill and dale . . . but it devolved into a pub crawl. After taking us up the hill on some mountain bike trails to a drink stop, trail then made a sweeping loop back through some shiggy paths in town to another beer stop. From there it crossed a couple sports fields and a stream into the back side of a pub . . . and then it was short hops to more pubs. About 4 miles of trail took us nearly 4 hours to complete.

The on after was hosted by one of the local hashers, not far from trail, where we were treated to PETA certified angus beef and hot dogs, along with the usual picnic fare. Circle however, was mostly a shit show. We had a first time RA stand in taking us through a journey, and it was fine until he decided we needed to conduct a naming. Hours later . . . a name was bestowed on a fine young harriette, and we were released back into the wild. A great day, making many new friends, and even crossing paths with some old ones. Thank you Shuttlecock for the invite to trail, good time in New Hampshire.

  • Beantown City H3 #90

    21. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

After the fun in New Hampshire yesterday, it was a short drive back to join the Beantown City H3 for another spin around the Boston Area (well Cambridge actually). We had about 18 on trail, for 5 miles of fun in the sun. Much like the Boston H3, the Beantown hash is a runners hash, but also had two beer checks with nearly as much time standing around as there was getting down the trail. But that is the standard in New England. Still a great time with fun hashers. Where to next? 😊Les mer

  • Rhode Island H3 #1904

    22. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

I have been sucked into the happy vortex of hashing here in New England. While hashing in New Hampshire on Saturday, I was alerted to the Beantown City H3 running back down in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Sunday. While running with them, I was reminded that the Rhode Island H3 runs on Monday, so I took a look and saw that it was less than an hour away. After getting my weekly laundry cycle completed this morning, I was off to Rhode Island. After a streak of seven consecutive hash runs with clubs I had never run with before, the streak was broken today. I ran with this hash three years ago, about 2 weeks before my open heart surgery. Obviously, it is great to still be vertical, and able to run here again. My streak of consecutive DIFFERENT hash clubs lives on though, having now run with 13 clubs without repeat, and still have more to add on.

Getting back to today’s trail in Rhode Island . . . it had been raining all day, after enjoying the past couple weeks of beautiful sunny skies. About two hours before trail it was tapering off, and hour before trail started, the rain had stopped. So things were looking up. A pack of 9 gathered in Diamond Hill Park in the north-eastern corner of the state to enjoy a Mr. Rogers (our hare) trail. From the looks of the park, we were anticipating a fun shiggy trail.

Unfortunately, the skies were beginning to darken, and after a quick chalk talk, we were off. Within 5 minutes the rain started again, and continued to gain in intensity until any marks on horizontal surfaces were completely gone, and the vertical marks were fading.

As the marks disappeared, the pack eventually clustered up again, and fortunately the hare was along for the ride and guided us through trail . . . not THE trail mind you, just along various trails as best he could remember, until we got to the whiskey check, which we picked up and continued on to gather with the rest of the pack at the beer stop. All 9 of us were together once again, and by this point, the rain was just pissing down on us like a cow pissing on a flat rock. We were drenched, and for some odd reason, we just stood there in the rain for like 10 minutes as we all chatted while a couple beers were being consumed. Finally, the absurdity of it all finally dawn on our hare, who then led us back down the hill to the cars. This is what the previously dry trail looked like at this point . . . https://www.facebook.com/reel/1127392637851333

By the time we reached the parking lot once again, the rain had subsided, and we regrouped and grabbed the cooler for circle. Soaking wet, we went through all the usual infractions, we sang some songs, and laughed at what had taken place. Fortunately it was a warm enough day that the rain was enjoyable, and the whole trail event was a hoot. Great time hashing in Rhode Island. A few of us went on for dinner at a local speakeasy, and all was right in the world. On On to the next trail with the Halve Mein H3 on Wednesday.

  • Hike around Kilburn Pond

    23. august 2022, Forente stater ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

In between all the hash runs, I still like to get out for a little exercise. Took an amazing hike around Kilburn Pond through the Pisgah State Park in New Hampshire. It was a warm and rainy day, so was wet most of the way . . . but had a nice swim in the pond towards the end. Just love being out in nature . . . this park is prime hashing territory.

It was a small pack of 8, but what we lacked in numbers, we made up for in enthusiasm. It was an excellent shiggy trail through a local park full of mountain bike trails. No pavement, just good old dirt tracks with plenty of twists and turns. We had two runners breaking all the checks, and the trail was full of song stops that . . . you know . . . kept us standing around. 😊 Circle was short and fun, and then we went into town for dinner. Nice to meet some of the local hashers, and a great night on the hash in upstate New York.Les mer

Coming back into New York after 3 weeks of exploring New England, set me up just in time to join the campout. I was the last one to sign up, late Thursday evening.

Many thanks to Sux & EW for supplying the camping gear, and the warm up hike out in Trumansburg to start the weekend.

The event was three days of crazy, with lots of dancing on Friday night & great seeing many old and new friends. The eagle trail on Saturday was over 8 miles and a complete shitshow [ 🙂 🙂 ] , with missing marks and lots of bush bashing. Sunday was the hangover trail, and a short ride home.

Overall, a splendid weekend of fun. And what happens at the campout, stays at the campout. 😉

  • Labor Day 5K

    5. september 2022, Forente stater ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Labor Day has always been a big holiday in my hometown celebrating the end of summer . . . and school starting up again. Most of my schooling was back in the 1970s, and class sizes back then were growing. I believe my class of 1981 may have been one of the biggest at just over 150. From what I hear now, class sizes are closer to just 50, and they have to combine with another school several miles away just to field an 8 man football team. Times change . . . Anyway, over the past decade, they have added a 5K race to the holiday procession, and my buddy John and I have run it three times. This year it was in a steady rain, but it was just as much fun as always. We have tied on the two previous occasions, but this year he beat me . . . as you can see at the finish. 😆😆😆Les mer
