    On On to the Next Adventure

    I should have been in the air at 1730 for the first leg to Miami . . . but due to severe rain storms in Miami, we were delayed by about 4 hours. I missed my connection to Doha (and the follow on to Nairobi). Finally got in the air, and made it to Miami. But there was no reps for Qatar Air.

    Had to find a hotel, but just as I got to the Airport Hotel desk, they sold the last single room. So then had to find a hotel in town. Made it out, got some snacks and a couple beers, and got on the phone to Qatar Air. Got my flight rebooked, on the most garbled phone line, could hardly understand what he was saying. But I got an email with new flight, and good seats. So will arrive 24 hours later than expected, and miss the Saturday Hash . . . but will still get to the Sunday and Monday hash trails in Nairobi.    Читать далее

    Made it to Doha

    After the 24 hour delay in Miami, it was back to the airport for the next leg into Doha. We boarded on time, and everything looked good, but we ended up sitting on the taxi way for 2 hours, and guess what . . . we arrived LATE in Doha, and of course, missed my connection again. At least this time, there was an agent at the gate with a new boarding pass . . . but that was all.

    I figured I needed to follow up on the extra expenses of hotel and UBER in Miami, and see what was available in Doha. After getting sent to 4 different service desks, the best they could do is a lounge pass, and a card with an email address to submit a compensation request. It was about $200 total, not holding my breath, so will see what comes of it.

    Otherwise, this delay is only 8 hours, departing at 0200 Sunday morning, for a 0800 arrival in Nairobi. If my hotel room is still available, I'll have time to check in, clean up, and make my way to the Sunday Nairobi H3. Fingers crossed.    Читать далее

    After finally arriving in Nairobi, 32 hours later than planned, arrival was fairly easy.
    Heading straight to my hotel, I got a quick 4 hour nap . . . and then it was off to the Sunday hash here in Nairobi (a.k.a. the Sash).

    I was all set to grab an Uber, but Maasai Disaster offered to give me a lift, and he was told that I needed a down down to start the day . . . so I got to enjoy a Tusker beer on the ride to the hash. We had about 25 hashers lined up at the start, and after a brief introduction, we were off. There was a most excellently marked trail, and it appeared that almost everyone did the long trail (short was only 6k), as we all just trotted along through side streets and alleyways, and completed a 10 Km trail back to the meeting place. You pay for your own beers at the bar, but a small sum of 200 Shillings (~$1.50 US), gets you down down beer and a nice buffet meal after circle.

    Everyone was very friendly, and we had some good laughs after a most enjoyable trail. Many thanks to the SNH3 for a great day. As I was on pure adrenaline after the long flight, it was back to the hotel for more sleep.    Читать далее

    Original Nairobi H3 #1177

    Another great day of running around the streets of Nairobi, and meeting new friends on the hash. Well, I actually had some old friends at this one, but always good to catch up.

    We met out in the Embassy area, off United Nations Ave. As you may guess, there were several embassies in this area, as well as the UN Headquarters, which we ended up running past towards the end of trail.

    Speaking of trail, after the usual introductions, the runners were sent off in advance of the walkers. We headed up the street to the main road (UN Ave) and found the first bit of shiggy passing through a farmer's field. From there it was along the side of the road which was mostly under construction. Looping around, we found a bit more shiggy before coming back around to UN Ave.

    Then, trail turned down a long street with fences on both sides, only to hit the Hurricane Stop (drink stop), then turned around back to UN Ave to make the final 1.5 kms back to the house. Runners ended up with about 9 K, and the walkers was something like 4 k (according to the hares).

    Circle was a good event, with 4 actual virgins, and a handful of visitors, including Fat Ass. Following circle, we had an excellent dinner of chili and salad, washed down with several kinds of beer to choose from. Another great day on the hash.    Читать далее

    Hiking Karura Forest

    Enjoying my stay in Nairobi, and after getting in a couple hash trails on Sun and Mon, I was able to get out for some great hikes. There are so many enjoyable dirt trails to hike right in the city limits. Was able to get in about 25 kms worth over the past couples days. Today we hiked in Karura Forest, very relaxing.Читать далее

    It was another one of those 'Bucket List' item days . . . got to cross off Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. First few photos are from our flight arrival. Then the rest are close up.     Hashing Zimbabwe PANAFRICA HASH Prelube

    After spending the morning admiring Victoria Falls, our merry gang of 20 hashers gathered for our first trail of this prelube event. It was an A-B trail starting at the Livingstone Hotel . . . and finishing at the Dzimbahwe Lodge. True trail was about 5 K, hared by Hazukashii (well, what did you expect?), and it even included a beer check (nobody saw that one coming). 🙂

    At the end, we circled up around the pool and issued a few down downs. Highlight of the day was that it was Honey Bee’s birthday, and she provided us all with special event hash shirts (as you can see in the photos). By the time we wrapped up circle, it was getting late, so we headed straight out to a local resturaunt for dinner. All in all, a great day of hashing in Zimbabwe.    Читать далее

    Well, we hashed yesterday . . . so it's time to go on a SAFARI. OK, let's find another country to explore in then. So off we go to Botswana. It was only an hour away.

    Lusaka H3 #2247

    I have been hashing a long time, probably longer than most currently active hashers. One club I have heard about for many years, and have always wanted to get to was the Lusaka H3 in Zambia. Today was the day. Our merry band of prelubers (for PAN AFRICA HASH) from all over the world, rode a bus up from Zimbabwe yesterday, and prepared to take on this opportunity.

    I was all prepared to set a trail in the city near the hotel, but my last minute plea to the Lusaka hash resulted in a most generous offer to host us . . . they sent a bus to pick us up, set the trail an hour outside the city, prepared a whole buffet dinner on site, and treated us to an awesome circle and evening of fun. Right from the start when we offloaded from the bus, we could tell this was going to be a good day. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, and made us feel right at home.

    Once all 30 hashers had assembled, it was on out for trail, which was 5 kms of good old single track dirt trails through the countryside. The trail was most excellent, on rolling hills and through scrub brush, and eventually wound its way back to home base. Beer was immediately flowing from the makeshift bar, and smiles were on every face. After numerous beers had been consumed, we circled up for the usual entertainment, and we enjoyed all the fun. Then, when the Swing Low had faded off into the darkness, the food line opened up and our bellies were filled with BBQ beef, chicken, and sausages, along with an assortment of salads and rolls.

    Once completely sated, we stood around and chatted for another hour and laughed . . . but then it was time to say goodbye. Many thanks to the Lusaka H3 for hosting us on this special Tuesday trail, we all had a great time.    Читать далее

    Pan Africa Hash - Red Dress Run

    We all made the two hour shuttle out from Lilongwe this morning, and have settled into this fabulous venue right on Lake Malawi. This RDR was a well laid 6 km trail that took us through the local village outside the venue, even had a bunch of kids chase after us as we ran by. One of the better RDRs I have done in a long time. Looks like we had over 50 on trail this evening, good times to start a fab weekend.Читать далее

    Long flight back . . .

    What an amazing trip to Africa. Long flight on return . . . Malawi to Addis Ababa, to Geneva, to Newark, and finally to Boston. Transit was mostly uneventful, except in Geneva. Arrived, and we had to wait about 15 minutes because they could not open the airplane door (new A350, so may have been the ramp was off line). Then we exited another door, and entered the terminal to another locked door, for another 15 minute wait. Then for those of us just transferring, there was another door to pass through, also locked, and another 15 minute wait. Then had to get scanned again, and the woman in front of me lost her boarding pass, and we stood there while they fumbled around with her for another 10-15 minutes. Eventually got through, all this happened in less than 100 meters from the airplane I arrived on . . . what a CF.

    Was able to visit 5 new countries (Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, and Malawi), and hash in 4 of them (went on a day trip to Botswana for a Safari). Back in the US now for about a month. Then off to Thailand for a month.    Читать далее

    After maybe the longest gap between hash runs I have experienced in a long time (16 days), I finally got back into it by haring the Jolly Roger H3 today. The pack was small, but energetic, and scampered along after me on this 5 mile (runners) and 3 mile (walkers). It appears that no one actually did the walker’s trail, as the two walkers somehow did not pay attention, wandered past the split, and followed the runner’s trail. Once they realized their mistake (KISS and Dab), the claimed they lost trail and cut their way back to the start, thus becoming the FRB and FBI. Well done.

    In the end, the pack was happy, happily grumbling that the beer check was too close to the end of trail. Oh well. In the circle, we had one real virgin, from England no less. We had to educate him, that the whole sport of Hashing actually comes from England about 200 years ago, via Malaya (now Malaysia). After the usual round of down downs in circle, we adjourned to the Brick House for dinner. Good fun on a nice warm day.    Читать далее

    Hashing in Tampa Again

    Just going to put them all in one post. Got to do some excellent trails in the greater Tampa / St Pete / Sarasota region over the past couple weeks.

    After haring the Jolly Roger H3 trail below, I added:

    Jolly Roger H3 #1644 - Hared this one out at Ft Desoto. It was a special Saturday trail, to benefit HPV who had just suffered a stroke.

    Sarasota Circus H3 #325 - Short trail, as part of a series of trails laid for dog owners.

    Taco Tuesday H3 - Fun city trail, good night for a run.

    Jolly Roger H3 - Was all set to hare for the third JRH3 trail in a row. But as we gathered at the start, we had an afternoon thunderstorm. 5 Minutes before I was off to set trail, two big lightening strikes hit near the park, and the pack decided that . . . no fucking way dude . . . and we all just headed to the on-afters.

    St Pete H3 #219 - We had a new transplant come in from Tidewater H3, via California. It was a great evening for a hash run, but trail was prelaid, and it rained. So the hare did a live relay to check it out. We ended up with a check on a false trail, that ended up causing us much confusion. Eventually figured it out, and finished up a 4 mile trail in nearly 6 miles. :O)

    Tampa Bay H3 #1191 - It was Puppy's 22nd anniversary of hashing. He set a short pavement pounder behind the Appleby's on Gandy. It was a hot day, but still running a hash is better than sitting around.

    Monday Federal Holiday H3 - Just happened to be in town for Memorial Day, and was asked to set trail. Did this one over in Pinellas Park area. Winged it, based on my general knowledge of the area, and gave the pack a 4+ mile loop around a couple parks, and alleyways between buildings.

    Even with the aborted lightning storm, it was still 7 trails over 14 days. Good good.

    Loading up for lots of hash trails

    Arrived early Tuesday morning, and spent the first day sleeping since I did not sleep on the flight from Germany.

    Wednesday was:

    Bangkok Harriettes #2113

    The sky was mostly overcast, with an occasional ray of sunshine breaking through. We met at the edge of Lumphini Park for a casual Wednesday evening trek through the city. After the pack of about 15 or so gathered, we were off on trail. All was well for at least the first 500 meters until we hit the first check, and that’s where things got dicey . . . shit happens on the hash sometimes. Not going to get into the details, but most of us eventually found paper again headed in the direction we were already going, until we hit an area that has been used many times for trail, including earlier this week, and we were warned we would be crossing trail . . . and we did, and . . . it was a bit unclear after that.

    Most of us eventually found trail again and made it to the finish of this projected 8 K trail (I only found about 6 k unfortunately). Two hours passed before the DFL finally turned up at the On-In, just in time to get circle started. Circle was uneventful, but fun, and as usual when I return to Bangkok, I get the Tits of the Week award (for having traveled through 21 countries on all 7 continents over the past year) accompanied by the customary down down steel. Circle concluded in short order, and we recessed into the restaurant for dinner . . . and just in time too. It was not long before we heard some light pings on the roof, and started seeing flashes outside . . . and as they say in Blackpool . . . THE RAINS CAME DOWN!

    Thursday was:

    Bangkok Thursday H3 #405

    It was another overcast evening, but the rain held off this time. We had an excellent trail from an old friend, PMS, who I have known for over 30 years reaching all the way back to when I was in Hawaii the first time, running with the Honolulu Hawaii H3 (H5). PMS made good use of the park to start us out, but we eventually found our way out and into the local city streets, alleys, and hidden pathways, for a fun night time 7 Km trail.

    It is still hot and humid, so developing a thirst is done far too easily. We had a nice and short circle, followed by an excellent fare of Thai food (my favorite). And a few quick goodbyes and it was back out into the night for a nice after dinner walk back to the hotel. Another grand day in Bangkok . . . I should move here someday.    Читать далее

    It was the AGM, and my old buddy “Rawhide” was giving up his GMship after a great year of hashing. We ventured up to the northern edge of Nonthaburi for a most excellent 8+ km trail through the shiggy. There has not been much rain recently, so trail was mostly dry, even the rice fields we wobbled through. This trail just reminded me of how much I really appreciate Thailand, and should just get over it all, and move my saggy ass here for good (I’ve telling myself that for years, but when will I be done with all the travel and settle down?).
