    It was a great hashing weekend with two excellent trails here in Bangkok. The Men's hash was hared by Tinker, who set a 7 km run around Nonthaburi. The Siam Sunday H3 had an equally fun 6 km run hared by three harriettes. Well done to all for all the sweat.

    My third hare here in Bangkok over the past month . . . paying my dues to hashing. Still doing a bit of nostalgia, I ran this trail past where the very first Bangkok Monday hash started back in 1982.

    To make it work, I set it up as a B to A trail (actually it was an A to B to C).
    After the initial scout I did, it was going to be too long. So I found a restaurant, then a start point. To knock off distance, I started them at the train station 1 km away. Trail started with a 10 minute ride on the Sky Train, then trail zig zagged its way over to Wat Thewasunthorn (which is right about at the 5 km mark). True trail was about 8.5 kms, with some of the FRBs running over 11 kms, while breaking those checks. I may have even found some trail that the current rabble had never run before . . . a good day then.

    It was a fun day, and the last one of the year for the BMH3 . . . AGM is next week.    En savoir plus

    As we get closer to the end of the year, the temps have been cooling a bit, only into the low 30s C now. So not quite as soaking wet at the end as it has been. We had another awesome 8 km trail yesterday on the Men's Hash here in Bangkok.

    There were several returners and visitors in town, making their way to Pakse, Laos over the next week for Mekong IndoChina Hash. Will be headed out there myself on Tuesday. But first, we have the Bangkok Monday H3 AGM tomorrow . . . Happy Trails.    En savoir plus

    The AGM, out with the old and in with the new. Congrats to the year of Maverick and crew, it has been a fine year. All hail Spinning Dwarf and the new committee.

    We had well over 50 hashers on this one, many in town on their way to Mekong IndoChina Hash in Laos this weekend. Trail was a bit boxy, as you can see on the map . . . but was a good run through the back alleys and khlongs. Well done hares Boobalube and Checkless.En savoir plus

    Mekong IndoChina Hash

    Arrived on Tuesday to do some prep work in order to hare the BB trail on Saturday. Scouted on Wednesday, then went back and set the trail on Thursday. Friday morning I was able to go out on the Thinking Drinking H3 trail out in Paksong, and it was a very good run. Came back Friday evening for the RDR in town. Made an early evening of it, so I could get up early and get things sorted for trail on Saturday.

    SATURDAY - Ball Breaker Trail . . . Nearly 40 had signed up to run the BB trail, but after a hard night of partying, only about 20 actually turned up for the run. Bravefart, Flasher, and I teamed up to hare this trail in Laos. The area we were assigned to set trail in had little shade, and it was very hot out at well into the 90 degrees F. The pack took between 3 and 4 hours to roll in from this 20+ km effort.

    SUNDAY - Hangover Trail . . . just a short walk through town, but it was a good circle and lunch. Overall, a great event here in Pakse, Laos.    En savoir plus

    BoBo gave us all a scare early on, providing no information on what his plans were for this annual postlube . . . but in the end, he came through with flying colors.
    We had over 100 ready to go as we gathered to board the busses to the venue. Earlier in the day, BoBo and I went out to set trail and make the final preparations at the venue. The trail was about 6 - 7 kms, out to the south-east of Pakse, and along the Mekong River.

    Most of the pack completed the run just before sunset, but a few stragglers rambled in after dark, but none the worse for wear. After a period of rehydration, the pack reassembled for down down on the ice, and jocularity ensured. Everyone found their way to a cold bottom, and a chance to quench their thirst as the accusations began to fly. All int a days work, another awesome closing event to the Mekong IndoChina Hash.     It has been 26 years since the last (and only) time I have hashed in Hong Kong. Back in the 90s, the internet was just starting to blossom, and the only way to get updated info on the weekly hash trails here was to go to the Wanch Bar and look on the chalk board. It was a Thursday afternoon back in 1998 when I rolled into town, and wasted little time on making my way to the Wanch. I was dismayed upon arrival, that the chalk board was completely bare . . . feeling disappointed, I ordered a beer and sat wondering what to do. Not 10 minutes later, a gentlemen walks in and I notice he has a hash shirt on! Glory be, could this be a sign? I immediately walked over and introduced myself, and asked what was up with the weekend of hashing . . . so this was the first time I met Obelix. He tells me he is actually just stopping for a beer, and is on his way to the hash. I am still in street clothes (blue jeans and collared shirt, with flat leather loafers), but have no time to go back and change. Sooooo, off I go to the hash. If you are familiar with Hong Kong, you know that the Royal South Side H3 runs on Thursday evenings. So tagging along with Obelix, we get to the start, and I buy a hash shirt, so I at least look like a hasher, and run the trail that went up and around The Peak. It was great fun. That weekend, I also took the ferry over to run with the Taipa - Macau H3 to fill out the weekend.

    Anyway, fast forward 26 years, and here I am, back in Hong Kong for the 24th All China Nash Hash. The last time I was in China was 2002 in Beijing, for the very first All China Nash Hash (which coincided with the Beijing H3 1000th weekend). Having just wrapped up with the Mekong IndoChina Hash in Pakse, Laos, I wasted little time getting over to Hong Kong to take in a few hashes both before and after the ACNH. First up was the Little Sai Wan H3 (my first visit to this club). We had over 20 hashers join in, meeting in a park south of Kowloon Bay. Off we go on trail, and almost immediately we started to climb, and climb, and we would continue that theme for the next hour until we reached the top of Braemar Peak which sits at just over 200 meters. Overall, the trail enjoyed nearly 600 meters of ascent and descent on this A to A trail in the dark . . . it was an absolutely great trail.

    We enjoyed a couple beers in the park before heading on in for the après in a local restaurant. After enjoying a family style Chinese dinner, we had a short circle that recognized the hares . . . who were also both celebrating their birthdays. Along with a third, it turns out 3 of the 20 or so hashers were all celebrating as you can see in the photos. Since we started at 1900, and trail took over 90 minutes, by the time we finished up everything, it was after 2300 and the streets were getting quiet, and it was raining . . . so jumped in an Uber and called it a day (a great day that started with a flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong, and then quickly scampering out to the hash). On the way back to the hotel, I received a text that a possible T8 H3 might take place on Thursday morning . . . that is a hash club that only runs when a severe storm is inbound (a T8), but upon waking this morning the damn thing had veered, so now relaxing in bed and writing this tale. Tonight will be my return to the Royal South Side H3 after 26 years of globetrotting. Get Some!    En savoir plus

    Previous to Wednesday night on the Little Sai Wan H3, my one and only hash in Hong Kong was with the Royal South Side H3 back in 1998. Now 26 years later, it is fun to be back. The 6 km trail last night was after dark, and once again all up hill . . . how the hell does an A to A trail come out as ALL UP HILL . . . well, it seemed like it anyway. We’ve done so many stairs and so much climbing the past two nights, that I have decided the BB trail on Saturday on the All China Nash Hash is a NO GO! 😉

    Anyway, the RS2H3 trail was fun, but I made the mistake at one point of following hashers instead of trail. We had been climbing for eternity, and I was alone and between two groups of hashers. I could see the lights ahead of me on the stairs. When I got to the top, there was nothing, everyone was gone (did I mention it was raining, and the marks were not cooperating?).

    Then off in the distance I saw three lights headed down hill . . . so I scampered off after them. Once I caught up, we continued down hill in the dark, when I realized we were not on trail anymore. I gave in, and trusted they knew what they were doing . . . rather than running back up the hill to find the actual trail. That was a good decision, because the did get us back to the finish just as the rest of the pack was coming in.

    After a bit, we circled up and had many good laughs. I like the way they do circle, mostly accusations . . . and when you step up to make one, you first take a down down, then proceed. No songs, just rapid fire accusations. It was a fun divergence from singing the same song over and over . . . and over and over . . . etc. Afterwards, we recessed to a local restaurant for another excellent Chinese family style dinner. And then, it was back on the train to Wan Chai, where we reconvened at the Queen Victoria for more drinks. In a few hours, it is time to check in and pick up our goodie bags for All China Nash Hash that will be taking place this weekend.     Rego desk opened at 1500 today, and most of the 300 or so registrants rolled through and picked up their goodie bags. The hash was scheduled for 1900, and went out right on schedule. Trail followed the established format . . . start at sea level, run towards the tallest, closest mountain . . . and run to the top and back. And so we did, just like the past two nights of prelube trails. 😊

    Trail was a fun 7 km climb to the ridge, and then we ran along a skyline walkway at near level with the tops of most of the buildings. An excellent view of downtown. It did not rain much, but did spit on us most of the evening. Circle was rowdy, and everyone was having a great time. Overall, another fabulous hash trail here in HK. Tomorrow we are off on the main event . . . wish us luck!!

    The organizers have been doing great, plenty of beer on hand, plenty of info flowing for the guests . . . and nice goodie bag.    En savoir plus

    This was the main event day for the 24th All China Nash Hash. The last time I was in China was 2002 for the very first ACNH in Beijing (also their 1000th run weekend). 22 years ago I was still a young strapping lad, and was actually the FRB on the ball breaker trail . . . receiving the coveted Ratchucker Memorial Cup (you can see more on that at . . . https://www.gotothehash.net/history/ItS-China.pdf ). Now, all these years later I did not even dare do the BB trail in Hong Kong, with all these damn hills. I opted for the Rambo (long) trail that was only 9 kms, but still had a shit ton of ups and downs.

    We gathered at Shooter’s Bar and waited for the busses to arrive, and it was raining off and on. We had an hour and a half bus ride to the start, which took us north almost up the China border, but then came back south into one of the national parks. At the start, it was raining, but tapered off just a bit as we took off on trail. Although, with the humidity, we were mostly soaking wet anyway. Trail interlaced many sandy and dirt tracks, along with access roads, to give us a fun 9 kms of joy as we made the usual UP and DOWN along the way. We eventually returned to the bus parking lot and awaiting all to finish. We then had a short circle before getting on the bus to the BASH site (that’s the on on on). We had dinner in an old pig farm in the middle of nowhere, even after the busses dropped us off, we still had to hike in another 300-400 meters along a twisting path to nowhere. Once we settled in, the food was served and it was delicious . . . BUT, they brought out the food in waves. So depending on when you got in line, determined what you actually got to eat. But we all got fed.

    We eventually had another joint circle with all the other trails, and then the bands started playing. The night was capped off with a local hash band called the RED ZEPPLIN. They were quite good, and had the whole pack jumping and dancing. By 2200, we headed back to the busses for the 45 min ride back to town and called it a night.     The Wan Chai sector is still hash central, but for nearly 3 decades, the Wanch Bar was HASH CENTRAL. Back in the 90s, before the internet took hold, the best way to find out where each hash was taking place was to go to the Wanch Bar and look on the chalk board. Unfortunately, recently the Wanch was taken over by new management, and the hash was no longer welcome. Then the Wanch actually moved. But hashers are resourceful, and have now found a couple other bars in the area to frequent. The Queen Victoria gets a lot hash business, as does the Taboo and Shooters Bar.

    Well, on this last day of the 24th All China Nash Hash, the Wanchai H3 hosted us all on a fine trail on the island. We started out by running over to the channel side, and running down the highway, until we reached a drainage area, and dropped down onto a side road. From there, the pack skittered up the road, but there were some old marks on a post, and that sent the front runners off on a side journey, while the rest continued on and up onto a pipeline access to the top of the closest tallest mountain . . . by now you should have figured that out. Making our way towards the top, we had ropes and stairs, and eventually made the top. After a great view, is was back down the other side . . . only to find another split for the crazies to climb yet another mountain. These hashers in Hong Kong love nothing better than abusing their visitors by climbing mountains on trail.

    As the pack began trickling into the finish, the beer was flowing and everyone was happy to be chattering along. Circle soon followed as the last of the pack wandered in, and several down downs were issued to celebrate the grand weekend. And it was . . . a GRAND WEEKEND hash event here in Hong Kong. Well done to all the hash clubs that sponsored trails for the 300 plus visitors. On a bright note, for those of us stay on a few days, we’ll get to run with the Kowloon H3 tomorrow, and the Ladies of Hong Kong H3 on Tuesday. GET SOME!!    En savoir plus

    We ventured to the western side of the island for a run with the second oldest hash club in Hong Kong. Keeping with the ever present theme, trail wasted little time in finding elevation. Not once, not twice, but three hills, each getting bigger as we moved forward. In the end, we had climbed nearly 600 meters on this 7 km trail (and I am not even sure what trauma my Garmin watch went through, as it seemed to head out to sea at about 4 k).

    There were about 30 hashers on hand, and while it did not rain, it was a very humid evening. The first few Ks were city streets, but then it turned up along a mountain road and eventually passed through a recently torn down housing area, where the trail got dark and a bit slippery due to the torn up ground. We all made it down eventually, and had a bit to stretch our legs into the finish. After a bit of socializing, we moved over to the après for dinner of delightful Chinese dishes, followed by circle. Down downs were issued in large bowls, and a couple hashers serenaded a young lady for all diners to enjoy. A great evening on the hash.    En savoir plus

    This hash is the 4th oldest club for the ladies, behind the Brunei Hens, the Ipoh Harriettes, and the Kota Kinabalu Bunnies. Founded by Hilary Prior on 15 June 1971. A fine, and well established hash club.

    The weather has taken a turn the past 24 hours or so, as another storm heads our way. Temps dropped down in the 60s F today, and it was drizzling rain all throughout trail. After 7 days, and 7 hash trails over the past week here in Hong Kong, today was probably the best trail. I love running at night, and in the rain, and . . . the trail reminded me of Hawaii. Single lane dirt tracks cut into the side of the mountain, just like up on Tantalus.

    Weaving back and forth with the contours of the mountain . . . so much fun. Although it was raining, most of the marks were intact, only a couple spots we over ran and had to do some searching. Overall, an awesome day on the hash. Circle was quick, a Scottish theme, and then we went for Thai dinner at the après.

    What an awesome week in Hong Kong . . . 7 trails, 50 kms of enjoyment, and 3500 meters of CLIMBING, holy shit. Can’t ask for more than that.    En savoir plus

    After a week in Laos for Mekong, and another week in Hong Kong for All China Nash Hash (and 7 straight days of hashing there), I caught a mid-day flight over to Bangkok, just in time to scoot on out to the Bangkok Harriettes trail this evening. That makes 8 straight days of hashing, and off to another tomorrow evening.

    Trail tonight was mostly flat, and after all the climbing we did in Hong Kong, it was a welcome respite. We had 29 hashers on hand at the start, and most were out on this 6 km trail (of course, I managed to extend it to 7.5 with all the checks). It was a fun jaunt for a city run, with plenty of small alleyways and twists & turns. Good to be back in Bangkok, if only for a few days. Starting next week, a whole new adventure is in store.     Another beautiful night for a hash in Bangkok. The weather has decidedly cooled to moderate levels, and was only 31 C tonight. We gathered south-west of Lumphini Park, and trail would eventually pass through about half way in . . . where scores of people were enjoying the evening with various sporting events including jogging, jazzercise, yoga, et al.

    This 8 km trail had many points of dispersion, and the pack often had to spread out and find the way forward . . . causing some of us to run over 10 kms to ensure the pack could move on. It was a most excellent night on the hash, and everyone seemed to enjoy it. We followed trail up with a short circle of the usual accusations, and then a spot of Thai dinner before moving on home for a good night’s rest. While this past week has not been the most consecutive hash trails I have run, it has been 9 straight days of fun . . . especially the 7 days in Hong Kong, where every trail had several hundred meters of elevating inspiration. Anyway, I will enjoy a fine Friday with nothing more than a trip to the laundromat to clean up hash attire and make ready for the next set of trails. On On.    En savoir plus

    We met in a van . . . down by the river! IYKYK. From the start, we crossed over the highway and headed towards the water. Trail turned down a khlong, but after about 100 meters, it dead-ended just before getting to the shore line, so back we go to the highway and down another 200 meters before turning left once again. This time, we got to the dock, just in time to board for crossing over. Once we made it to the other side, trail took off into the ville, and heading right over to the river again . . . then zigging and zagging its way and making a big loop back to the pier for a fun 7+ km stretch of the legs. Finishing at different times, the pack had to wait up to 30 minutes for the boat to cross back and forth. An excellent trail.

    Circle was entertaining, and direct to the point, and we were soon having post run dinner of Thai delights. This will be my last Bangkok Men’s hash for this year, probably back in February. On On    En savoir plus

    That’s it for 2024 in Thailand. I ran 58 (of 170) trails here this year, more than ever before . . . seems like I am gravitating to the warm weather of SE Asia, so may just apply for that Long Term Visa in Thailand next year.

    Trail today was just a bit linear, and less than spectacular. Although it was well marked, it was mostly straight down concreate roads, and only a couple short spots of alternative brilliance. BUT, of all the trails I have ever run . . . this was another one. Some days you just have to be happy that someone stepped up to hare, and keep us entertained. So still a good time, and overall it was another great day on the hash.

    Long flight ahead, hope I get some good sleep on the plane.    En savoir plus

    Right after finishing the Bangkok Monday H3, I went back to my hotel and showered up, grabbed my backpack, and was off to the airport. Departing at 0200, flew from Bangkok to Abu Dhabi . . . Abu Dhabi to Madrid . . . Madrid to Asuncion. Took 36 hours total with layovers. Arrived here at 0730 ready for the next hash adventure.En savoir plus

    I am here for the 3rd Anniversary of the 3rd iteration of the Asuncion H3.

    We had about 20 on trail tonight, although three of us started running early on . . . I believe I was the only one to keep running and actually do the whole trail. Most of the pack followed the hare on a short cut towards the end. Good grief, there was 3 drink stops on the 5 Km trail (yes, running up front and breaking the checks was my responsibility, and of course I managed to knock out 6.5 kms (but my fat ass needed the exercise). It was an A to B trail, and we ended at the same bar trail was at last year when I visited. They had pretty good food, and the beer was cold . . . service was a tad slow, but we held circle right there in the place, and all was well. It was a great start to this hashing weekend.     Main Event . . . Another sweltering day in the middle of South America, and the hash was on. A party villa had been rented for this occasion, and it was lovely. Trail kicked off at 1530, the long trail was 10 K, while the short trail got a 7 k deal. Our hare, Ban the Cock, set an amazing trail that took in all sorts of winding single track dirt trails, open fields, and alleyways. A most excellent adventure here in Paraguay. Near the end, trail cut through a marina down by the river, and skirted along the shore for a while before heading back towards the finish. After two of us made it through the marina, they shut the gate to keep the riff raff the likes of us from being seen in such a dignified establishment. 😊

    As the pack slowly drifted into the finish, ice cold beer was the flavor of the day (ok, they had wine too . . . and a few bottles of rum), and a swim in the pool was very refreshing. Snacks of empanadas were on hand while we waited for the BBQ to finish being prepared. Then the BBQ was served and there was sooooo much food. I’m not sure if we finished half of it, but it was amazing. Circle was a hoot, and all 20 + hashers joined in for some games after. Bottom line, if you don’t come down to South America to hash, you’re just missing out on some of the best things in life. On On    En savoir plus

    Another hot day in Paraguay, was near 100 this afternoon, and had only cooled slightly by run time. Well, mostly really walk time. Only 11 turned up for the hangover trail today, and I was the only runner. I was having a hell of a time focusing, and spent far too much time breaking the checks, but in the end the pack was only 5 minutes behind me on this 6 km trail that I managed to do nearly 8 kms on. 😊 It was a good tour of downtown Asuncion, and the streets were sparsely busy as it was Sunday and most people are staying inside.

    It was an A to B trail, and we ended in a cool open air pub where we had free reign for most of the time we were in there, so no issues with circle or singing. After several down downs, we settled in for a pizza night and beer, laughed, joked, and talked about the weekend. Good times . . . then we had to say goodbye . . . until next time Asuncion.     This is the start of the Uruguay H3 14th Anniversary weekend, and with a few visitors already in town . . . why not throw on a hash. I was happy to volunteer to set a live trail, with no scouting, and just winging it. Turned out ok, for nearly 6 kms, unless you were the FRB, and you got to do that checking (BtC managed to score over 7 k). We wrapped things up with a round of beer, before wandering out into the night for dinner. Another great day on the hash.

    Tomorrow, we have a 2-3 hour drive out into the countryside for an outstation celebration.    En savoir plus

    Uruguay H3 #312

    Up at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning, we made the 3 hour drive out to Rocha, then took a small two lane road to the north. Then that turned into a dirt road for the last 3-4 miles, until we arrived at Tierra Bilu, a fabulous Runners Camp for Ultra Marathoners. The managers were a lovely couple Allison & Maxi Lopez. Maxi is the top Ultra runner in Uruguay, so we knew we were going to get some seriously awesome trails . . . and we were not disappointed.

    Once we had the entire pack of 23 assembled, we had a quick chalk talk, and then we were off. No pavement to be found, it was all dirt tracks, water crossings . . . and mud puddles, amazing shiggy for an amazing trail. Circle, dinner, and an all night dance party followed.

    On Sunday, we circled up again for another trail, more like a group hike, but we had even better views and lots of laughs as we climbed to the top of the local mountain. And the best news of all, if you want to join us for PAN SOUTH AMERICA HASH 2026, you too will get to hash in Uruguay (details to be posted in the next couple months).    En savoir plus

    Took a day tour out of the city (La Paz) to visit Moon Valley. It gets its name from Neil Armstrong, who one day many years ago while visiting La Paz, went out for a round of golf. Looking around, he said that area looks like the moon . . . and so it was designated a protected area, and is now a major attraction.

    It looks like the area was once under the ocean, and the ground is packed sediment of sand and stone. Over the centuries, rain has eroded it to spires . . . similar to Bryce Canyon in Utah, but not as colorful.    En savoir plus
