    Back in Thailand, just in time for the rain. When I walked to the train, it was overcast but light out. By the time I arrived near the run site, it was getting dark early . . . and 20 minutes later, just as we were ready to take off on the run . . . down came the rain.
    It is only those first few minutes going from dry to completely wet that are uncomfortable . . . once you are all wet, it is actually fun to run in the rain. And so it was, but with the rain, so goes the marks, and after the first few hundred meters, we did not see another mark for the rest of the day. I ended up running around for about an hour, enjoying the evening, but not seeing any more marks. No pictures, did not carry my phone on trail today.

    Still a good time, and still plenty of beer at the end.    Leggi altro

    Tokyo H3 – 50th Anniversary of Hashing in Japan

    First, a little background . . .

    Japan is a wonderfully diverse island nation in the Western Pacific Ocean. It has no physical borders with other nations, but does have maritime borders with Russia, China, Korea (N&S), and Taiwan. It consists of four main islands (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu), and numerous smaller islands, including the Ryukyu Islands that stretch all the way south to Taiwan, and the capital city is Tokyo.

    The islands of Japan have been inhabited for nearly 40 thousand years, but there seems to be little recorded history before the first century AD, and that is from the Chinese “Book of Han.” We know that several dynasties have ruled Japan, and like other parts of the world, life was simple and warriors ruled the day. In the late 1800s and into the early 1900s, Japan’s rule was expanding throughout the Western Pacific (Far East) until the end of WWII, and that history is well recorded. After the war, Japan was occupied by international military powers from 1945-1952. Since then, a new Japan has emerged that gives more power to the people and new freedoms. Some of those new freedoms included the joy or running, and with that came the arrival of the Hash House Harriers.

    The first hash club in Japan was the Tokyo H3, founded by Patrick 'Dunafew' Donoghue on 14 Jun 1976, who had previously hashed in Hong Kong. The HHH was in full expansion mode by the mid-70s, and Japan ranks as the 30th country to have a hash club. It would be less than two years before Dunafew moved on to Kobe and founded the Kobe H3 on 9 Jan 1978. Further to the south, the small island of Okinawa would be the next attempt to start a hash club, when William D. 'Jock' Trader came over from Taiwan. His first attempt was the Naha H3 on 10 Apr 1979, but that club could not get a proper foothold. His second attempt 16 Feb 1980 proved successful when he founded the Okinawa H3.

    Hash clubs would continue to pop up in major cities throughout Japan, including Iwakuni, Misawa, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, Sasebo, and Ibaraki. Hashing became so popular that multiple clubs starting emerging in some of these cities, especially around military bases. Some of these took on names unique to Japan (e.g. the Samurai H3, Kamikaze H3, and Sumo H3 [wink wink, I founded the Sumo H3 back on 6 Jan 2002]). There was even a mobile hash club based on the USS Blue Ridge that was founded on 21 Mar 1981. In all, there are nearly 50 hash clubs listed in the HHH Genealogy, and as many as 20 are still active.     I have had the pleasure of running nearly 400 hash trails in Japan while living in Okinawa and Tokyo, and can tell you that the public transportation system in most of the major cities is amazing. Trails often start at a train station, so there is no need to drive. While most of the weekday hash clubs run in the city, the greater Tokyo metropolis has a train system that offers access to over 1500 sq/kms of amazing trails, and they are explored every weekend by the Samurai and Sumo Hash clubs. Japan has also been a key crossroads for hashers to go forth and start new hash clubs around the world. As many as 70 descendants are recorded from Japan based hash clubs, in far off countries including the US, Italy, South Korea, Iraq, Switzerland, and Portugal.

    OK, back to the 50th Anniversary. We had a amazing pack of over 100 hashers to help celebrate this auspicious event. Trail started at 1400 in Ikebukuro, and traversed many an alleyway, side street, and park over about 8+ kms of joy. We even had a shortcut for the walkers, on this extremely hot day of 36+ C (100 F). All finishers were rewarded with copious amounts of ice cold beer, snack food . . . and eventually a full on dinner with champaign, wine, and sake. It was great to see so many old friends, many I had not seen since I departed Japan back in 2004. This trail capped off 6 straight days of hashing bliss here in the greater Tokyo area, in celebration of the past 50 years of hashing in Japan.

    Sumo H3 #1053

    This was the last prelube trail before the big celebration on Monday afternoon, for the 50th Anniversary of hashing in Japan. We returned to the site of the very first Sumo H3 trail in 2002 . . . and the 50th trail one year later in 2003. I found a couple old photos from trail number 50, I wanted to make sure it was the very same park.

    It was an awesome 8 km trail, 90% shiggy, up on the mountainside. We had about 50 hashers this time, a far bit more than back in the early days. So happy that the Sumo H3 still runs on, and now with over 1000 hash trails, we are going strong. ON ON!!!!

    And a special shout out to ICE DELIGHT for keeping the Sumo H3 going for so many years. Glad to see you are now traveling the world and seeing so many other new places. ❤    Leggi altro

    I first hashed with the Samurai H3 25 years ago this month, during my 3 years living here in Tokyo. What a great time that was. Nice to be back and get a chance to run with them again, as part of this 50th anniversary of hashing in Japan.

    We had a good hot humid trail today along the river, for just under 6 kms. Circle was raucous with over 60 hashers in the mix. We then recessed for party food and socializing. Another great day on the hash.    Leggi altro

    Sake H3 #86

    I spent many years in Japan, but this was my first trail with the Sake H3. Well, it was a split event with the Finally Friday Fukov H3, but you can only choose one.

    We had an awesome trail tonight, hared by Crusader. So many awesome little alleyways, and we even cut through several graveyards . . . ooooohhhoooohhhhoooooo. Scary. 6 kms of joy, and at the end we were served up copious amounts of beer and SAKE. Pissed as pissed can be. Good times on the hash.Leggi altro

    Tokyo Tuesday Thursday Holiday H3

    Tokyo has regular weekly hash trails on Sun, Mon, Wed, and Sat, and up until recently on Fri (Fri is now every other week). Originally founded by Rapunzel in 2009, as the Tokyo Tuesday Holiday H3, now the Tokyo Tuesday Thursday Holiday H3, was to fill in the gaps when such opportunities occurred. Japan has many holidays. Since we are having the big celebration for the 50th Anny, they snuck one in without a holiday.

    Last night, we met at the Hobgoblin Pub in Roppongi for more hashing fun. The lead hare was Piss-n-Boots, and SOMF and I assisted for moral support, as PnB had things all worked out on his own. It was an excellent trail, snaking along numerous little paths . . . highlighted with over 20 check backs. Very well coordinated, so the pack was twisting and turning all the way. True Trail was probably about 4.5 kms, and with all the CBs, closer to 6. About 20 hashers turned up for the fun, and we had some excellent pub grub to close out the evening.

    It is pouring down rain now, so basically a big etch-a-sketch shake cleaning up all the old trail chalk. Tonight we have the Finally Friday Fuckoff H3 trail at 1915. More good fun, then Samurai H3 tomorrow, Sumo H3 on Sunday, and then the big event on Monday.    Leggi altro

    Tokyo Ladies H3 #2232

    Well, I first hashed with the Ladies in Tokyo back in 2001, so 25 years of history there . . . but, it has been about 14 years since I last had the opportunity to join them on a run.
    When I lived here, it was about a 90 min to 2 hour train ride out to the west, in Fussa. I got out of work by 5 pm every Wed and headed to the train to make the journey into Tokyo over 50 times (and carefully planning to catch the last train that would get me home every time - that was no small feat, as it was never just one train. Often as many as three changes required to snake my way back to Fussa). One shameful note about this club, since I lived so far away, it was hard for me to hare a trail for them . . . but after relentless abuse, I finally did set one hash. My worst run to hare ratio of all the clubs I ran regularly with around the world.

    Tonight brought back so many great memories from 25 years ago, really enjoyed my time here. Tonight's trail was in Shibuya, a familiar area back in the day, but not so much anymore. Anyway, was great dashing up and down the narrow streets of Tokyo. Trail was well done, and made a figure 8 on the 6+ km journey. We had 29 on trail, and 22 of them stay on for dinner, at an Indian restaurant. Good times with great friends.

    Will be hashing every day for the next week, as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hashing in Japan.    Leggi altro

    Hua Hin Full Moon H3 #45

    Wrapping up the celebration weekend for their 4th anniversary, the H2FMH3 set an excellent 6+ km trail through the streets of Phetchaburi. It rained throughout the trail, and was all city streets and alleyways. Plenty of checks that were fun to figure out. After a short circle, we had a nice dinner in town, then returned to the hotel to finish off the 6 racks of beer still remaining.

    After drinking beer for an hour or two, and laughing, I suggested we order a couple pizzas, so ibo ibo pulled out his phone and found a place. Said we had less than 10 minutes to get the order in before they closed delivery, so got a pepperoni and a supreme. He laughed, saying it was only about 380 baht for both. About 40 minutes later, the website said they were still looking for a delivery driver. Another half hour after that, a guys pulls up on a scooter and hands over two tiny pizzas, about the size of your hand, and we all busted out laughing. Ibo ibo had ordered personal pan pizzas. So everyone grabbed a slice and it was gone in 30 seconds, and we all called it a night. At least we got a good laugh out of it all.

    I woke up this morning with a sore neck from whiplash, and a slightly sore butt, from my crazy fall yesterday . . . although I am still so thankful for not splattering my head on the concrete. Always look on the bright side of life . . . doo doot, doo doot, da doot da doot da doot . . .    Leggi altro

    Hua Hin 7-11 H3 – Hangover Trail

    We awoke to a cloudy sky, and a steady drizzle coming down. The hares managed to get all the marks on the vertical surfaces, so trail was intact throughout the first 5 Km leg to the restaurant. Trail had several FTs, but only one or two checks. They even had a run/walk split, but I think only a couple of us did the actual runner’s trail. No worries, all good. Even saw a monkey on trail.

    We all settled in for lunch, and the beer started flowing. I was not feeling like drinking beer, so wandered down the street and picked up a couple cans of Coke Light, and started making my way back. It was still drizzling, and as I stepped across that spot between wet sidewalk, and dry cover, I stepped on what turned out to be greased lightning. My leg went up in the air so fast I did not have time to flatten out, which saved me. I was still in a banana shape when my ass hit the concrete, so only landed on my ass & elbow (soda cans flying through the air). So very lucky me head missed the pole, as well as not banging it on the concrete. I could have blown my brains out there on the sidewalk. My lucky day for sure. I may find out I have whiplash or ass bruising tomorrow morning, but for now I feel fine.

    After a fine feed of local Thai food, it was make your own way back to the venue for circle. It was an easy jog of about 2.5 kms. Circle was really short, as most were just looking to jump in the shower and dry off . . . in preparation of the real trail later this afternoon. We now have a couple hours to relax.    Leggi altro

    Hua Hin 7-11 H3

    Well, I was not planning on it happening, but I have now participated in a 7-11 Hash Event. Down here in Hua Hin (actually in Phetchaburi, about 60 kms north of Hua Hin), for the Hua Hin Full Moon H3 4th Anniversary weekend. Since it was actually 11 July, they started the weekend with a 7-11 Hash Outstation, claiming it is the first ever outstation for such an event.

    Not saying I am a fan, because it is mostly drinking, with little emphasis on the trail . . . but we had a good time. We hit 5 stops on the way to dinner, then two more on the way back to the hotel. Now time to rally for the hangover trail this morning . . . more to follow.    Leggi altro

    My turn once again to lead the pack astray. Set an 8+ Km trek around the National Stadium area, filled with alleyways, RR Tracks, and other assorted obstacles. The pack of 25 or so, only took a few pictures for me to scarf up for this post . . . maybe they were to busy keeping track of all the turns.

    Back to Bang Sue, not literally, just starting back out there by the new train station. It was a hot and humid evening, but it looked like the rain would hold off for us, and it did . . . until just before circle (then it let loose on us).

    Trail started by running back to the station, where the septuagenarian pack of early starters got bogged down at the first check. Although they started about 30 minutes before the main pack, we found them still searching just a km away. In their frustration, they shouted they had looked all over, and had already covered over 4 kms with little to show for it. The pack soon found the paper and off we traveled up along the train tracks.
    Weaving our way through the streets and dirt paths before us, we crisscrossed the RR tracks several times. It was an excellent trail, but there were just two little things that confused the pack. First, the hares used pack arrows . . . so there was no distinction between the two as we moved along (and someone in the pack was dropping pack arrows a tad bit carelessly).

    Second, trail eventually passed through someone else's hash trail from the past couple weeks and then the shit started hitting the fan. We ran off on what ended up being old trail. Eventually figuring out that we were definitely not headed back to our start point, we turned around and eventually found our trail. 2 kms later, we found the hares waiting at a beer check, with a mea culpa (we were 9 kms in at this point), handing us a beer along with 20 baht to catch the train (we were still over 4 kms away from finishing, so they told us to get on the train).

    BUT, it was still a km to get to the train, ride 2 stops, and then another km from the train to the finish. So in the end, we covered 11 kms on a increasingly humid evening. In the end, we all found our way back to the on home, and all was right once again, in the world. Another fun evening on the mean streets of Bangkok.    Leggi altro

    It looked like rain for most of the afternoon, but to our enjoyment . . . there was no rain. Trail would have certainly been washed away as it was mostly chalk, and very well marked in chalk. Heck, there were intersections with as many as 10 circles marked. There were numerous arrows at many of the same spots. We passed up and down, in and out, of several temples . . . and it was in fact, very well marked. Cheers to Gung and her co-hare for a job well done.Leggi altro

    Rockin' a little celebration in honor of the 250th Anny of the good 'ol USA. Virginia Slim and I set the trail, and the rest of the gringos provided support with food, beer, shirts, and good cheer.

    Trail was rather short, but heavy shiggy with a few back checks . . . and even a beer check out in the swamp. And fun, FUN I TELL YOU, was had by all.    Leggi altro

    It was that time of the month . . . so off we go chasing the full moon. We had a relatively new hare, and I will commend him for marking it well. BUT, it was a little boring, just lots of streets and lots of traffic. Still a good time.     It was a long overnight flight from Mauritius, then having to wait 20 minutes to exit the plane, and 75 minutes in line at passport control. The train into town was fine, and then the taxi over to drop off my stuff went as planned. Then with only moments to spare, the taxi ride to the run site left me only about 5 minutes behind the pack. So dashing off in chase, I managed to catch up to the pack in less than 10 minutes . . . for some reason, they were all walking. I blew past them all, and ended up the FRB . . . WTH? 🤪🤪

    It is great to be back in Bangkok, and enjoying the rainy weather this time of year. The trail was shortened due to both the heat of the day, and the ensuing rain it brought in. No trail today, as we have the monthly Full Moon Hash tomorrow, and all is right in the world. On On . . .    Leggi altro

    Mauritius H3 #960

    Mauritius is a lovely island in the south Indian Ocean, aprox 1000 kms east of Madagascar, and even a remote island such as this has an active hash club. The Mauritius H3 was founded by Charles 'Bird' Mochan on 14 May 1988, when he came over from previously hashing in Finland with the Helsinki H3. This is my first visit to Mauritius, and although I have run about 100 trails this year, it has been 9 months since I last added a new country hashed in. So today was extra special to join the Mauritius H3 on trail for a most excellent 7 km trail. We had over 50 hashers turn up, and everyone was very friendly.

    Trail started on Albion Beach 2, and headed directly out into the sugar cane fields. The marks were straight forward, just the way I like. Circles were a check, plops of flour marked the way, and an occasional arrow to point the way to the Runner’s and Walker’s trails. The views in all directions were amazing, and the whole island is calm and relaxing, you just have to come visit to feel it. They run every other Sunday morning, and this was their 960th trail. So, in about 18 months they will be celebrating their 1000th. Will have to come back to help them celebrate.    Leggi altro

    One more trail before departing Germany. I hared a trail a few kms down the road from where I used to live, in a relatively underutilized quadrant of the greater Stuttgart area.
    Lots of great trail options, for this 8 km scurry with plenty of forested cover on a hot summer day. Hoping some of the pack got some more photos . . . BUT, it was Photocopulator's birthday, where she generously hosted a drink stop to help us celebrate. Another great day on the hash.Leggi altro

    German Hash-a-thon 2026

    Another great weekend in the hinterlands of Germany. We had about 30 hashers turn up for this one, hash-a-thon, out in Horwagen (about 3 hours north of Munich). As you might have guessed, this year’s event was hosted by the Munich H3, and they did a wonderful job hosting us. Great food, plenty to drink, and awesome trails. If you are not familiar with a hash-a-thon, it is four hash trails that eventually equal 42 kms of bliss, all in one day. Each trail is hared by a different hash club, and they use their own club’s marks (so just enough to keep you on your toes while running). Participants can run all four trails, or any of them or just one, totally up to the individual. This year the first trail was 16 kms, second trail was 11 kms, number 3 was mine at 8 kms, and the last one was supposed to be 7, but ended up closer to 9. This year’s winner for most distance covered was Made-2-Cum from Frankfurt, and he covered 49.2 kms. My lazy ass only did 22.

    The pictures provided are some hanging out photos, but all the trail shots are of trail three . . . the one I hared (and tagged along with the pack when they ran it). Although it rained pretty hard on Friday night, we had great weather otherwise. It’s a wonderful life.    Leggi altro

    Dienstag Schnitzeljagd Trupp H3 #872

    Back to my second home (Germany), I say that a lot. I actually have several places that I can refer to as home, it’s a wonderful life. Arrived in time to join the Dienstag Schnitzeljagd Trupp H3 for their regular Tuesday trail. It was an excellent shiggy trail through the forest near the airport. The pack ran between 10-12 kms depending on how many checks they worked on . . . me on the other hand, with my bum knee, took a couple liberal shortcuts and staggered in at just over 6 kms.

    The DST H3 is a no frills, free hash club in Stuttgart. When I founded it back in 2009, it was designed with a focus on the trail alone, as a running hash. It remains such still to today, so happy for that. We followed up trail with an awesome German / Croatian dinner and called it a night. Great great great times on the hash.    Leggi altro

    Oslo H3 #2001 – A Hash Odyssey

    Back to your regularly scheduled program . . . and it was a bit of a special event, as a spoof on a Space Odyssey. We met at a park overlooking the city on an overcast evening . . . but just before we set off on trail, the sun burst out for the first time all weekend, it was magnificent. Trail took us southerly down the coast, and out onto one of the islands in the bay. When I say out onto an island, I mean an island behind an island, way out to the end, on a single lane road. They also mentioned there would be no transportation, so we would have to walk out on our own. Happy Days.

    It was a beautiful location for the end, complete with swimming. Circle was short and sweet, and then they fed us some gumbo like rice dish, which was washed down with 150 NOK (about $18 USD) swill. A very entertaining end to an awesome weekend. And to top it all off, there was a surprise in the circle, as the founder . . . Ahluetta . . . was presented with a copy of the ultimate book on HHH History, TRUE TRAIL. It was a complete surprise to me, as you might expect, but a pleasant one. So another signed copy has entered the world library.    Leggi altro

    INTERSCANDI 2026 – Hangover Trail

    We had a great night of partying last night (yes, I eventually did leave the comfort of my bed to return), and the beer and wine was flowing . . . along with the live music. We had a fine breakfast this morning, before boarding the busses back into downtown.

    Trail started in the very famous Frogner Park, in central Oslo. Mother Nature was spitting rain down on us for a bit, but it eventually cleared off about 10 minutes into trail, and from then on we enjoyed a lovely afternoon. We passed by many interesting statues, buildings, and parks, along the way to the ? Mark Bar for lunch, circle, and social drinking for an additional hour or two. My knee felt pretty good this morning, but I thought it was still the pain killer I took yesterday afternoon . . . but even now, 24 hours later, my knee still feels quite good . . . It must be a Christmas Miracle. Time will tell, let’s see how it feels tomorrow morning. 😊

    Overall, the Oslo H3 has done a magnificent job hosting us this weekend. What a treat . . . great venue, excellent trails, and plenty of cold beverages.

    In my ever expanding effort to “act my age” . . . or back off and not be crippled for the rest of the day, I opted for the long trail at 14 kms, vice my usual attempt at the Ball Buster Trail, which was 25 kms. We were executing a B to A movement, getting to the train station and out to the start, when we ended up arriving at the train station about 45 minutes early, and standing around in the rain. We did have a 10 minute game of Rock/Paper/Scissors that distracted us for a bit, but dodging the rain was the main effort.

    The train finally arrived, and took us up the mountain where we jumped out and took off. First we climbed to the top of the first mountain, which was fine. My knee was feeling pretty good for the first 7 kms, but just as we were descending down a steep section for the mid trail aquavit stop, I slipped on a wet rock and wrenched my knee again and that was it. I was walking from there on in, and took a short cut. That only cut off about 2 kms, but was happy to be done. From there it was a hot shower and dry clothes, and partaking of a few local adult beverages.

    Once all of the pack got in and sorted, we circled up for down downs, which were entertaining with all the various hashers from around Europe. Then it was more rehydrating while we waited for dinner to be served. I am now back in my room, deciding if I want to roll over and go to sleep (Yay!!!), or rally for another hour or two of dancing and frivolity. My knee is screaming go to bed, but my party animal side is tapping me on the shoulder, and whispering in my ear that . . . you flew all the damn way to Norway for this event, GO PARTY!!

    Thirsty Thursday H3 - Oslo

    I hashed last night in Bangkok, straight back for a shower and grab my backpack, and off to the airport. Fly all night, via Dubai, and arrive here in Oslo around noon. Bus to the hotel, and just about an hour to relax before heading off to the hash here in Oslo.

    It was an excellent prelube to the weekend INTERSCANDI events. But I am so tired, all I could do is run the trail, grab a burger and a couple beers, and chat up a few hashers, then right back to the hotel for hopefully a good night's sleep.

    My Garmin watch must have been tired as well, as it did not want to sync up until the first km complete of this 5.5 km hilly trail through downtown Oslo. I think we had about 30 hashers in all, about half walkers and half runners. Good to see friends, but getting a good sleep tonight will make the rest of the weekend more enjoyable. On On.
