Christ Church Cathedral, more formally The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, is the cathedral of the United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough and the cathedral of the ecclesiastical province of the United Provinces of Dublin and Cashel in the Church of Ireland.

The cathedral was founded in the early 11th century under the Viking king Sitric Silkenbeard. It was rebuilt in stone in the late 12th century under the Norman potentate Strongbow, and considerably enlarged in the early 13th century, using Somerset stones and craftsmen. A partial collapse in the 16th century left it in poor shape and the building was extensively renovated and rebuilt in the late 19th century, giving it the form it has today, including the tower, flying buttresses, and distinctive covered footbridge.Read more

As a history lover, this place was amazing. So much to read and learn. I would definitely go back. We also got to here a student choir perform. Man. So spiritual and a lovely memory.
This church is the oldest in Dublin. It costs them 1.5 million Euro a year to keep it operational.Read more

1. Tag in Dublin

Nach 2 Stunden Flug und einer kurzen Taxifahrt sind wir in unserem Hotel angekommen. Es war zwar erst nur ein Zimmer fertig, machte aber nix wir wollten ja eh erstmal was essen und bei strahlendem Sonnenschein die nähere Umgebung unseres Hotels erkunden. Gegenüber steht die Christ Church Cathedral die wir links liegen gelassen haben um erstmal was zu esse. Nach Fish and Chips und Burger ging es gestärkt durch die Straßen von Dublin. Die nächste Stärkung hatten wir in The Bank eine alte Bank die zu einem Pub umgebaut wurde, hier gab es dann auch das erste Guinness und Irish Coffee auf irischen Boden :) Frisch gestärkt führte uns der weg zur St. Patricks Cathedral wo wir die abendliche Musikvorführung um 10min verpassten und nicht mehr herein kamen. Wir schlenderten durch das Pub Stadtviertel Temple Bar, welches abends schön beleuchtet und von Menschenmassen belagert war. Unser Abendspaziergang (wir waren nur noch zu 3) führte am Liffey über mehrere Brücken bis zum Spire of Dublin eine 120m hohe Nadel.Read more

Christ Church Cathedral - Dublin Castle

Christ Church Cathedral ist Dublins ältestes Gebäude und mehr als 1000 Jahre alt. Neben ihrer ansprechenden Architektur und den außergewöhnlichen Bodenfliesen ist sie bekannt für ihre Krypta aus dem 12. Jahrhundert.

Die Cathedrale wurde in den Jahren ihres Bestehens wichtiger Zeitzeuge der unterschiedlichsten geschichtlichen Entwicklungen. 1487 wurde in ihr König Edward VI. gekrönt, heute beherbergt die Krypta eine nennenswerte Ausstellung an Schätzen und Überbleibseln alter Zeiten. Auch als Filmkulisse musste sie schon für große Filme herhalten.

Von der Kathedrale aus gehen wir in Richtung Dublin Castle, aber nicht ohne an der südlich der Cathedrale gelegenen Visualisierung einer alten Wikingersiedlung vorbeizugehen. Da in Dublin sehr viele Relikte der Vergangenheit gefunden werden, können nicht alle ausgegraben und ausgestellt werden. Daher hat man sich hier entschieden, mittels Markierungen im Boden das Gefundene zu visualisieren.

Von hier aus gehen wir zurück zu Dublin Castle. das Schloss nicht von innen, verschaffen uns aber über den oberen und unteren Hof einen Eindruck von diesem Gebäude. Da die Essenszeit mittlerweile herangerückt ist, beschließen wir hier auch unseren kurzen Rundgang.Read more

Guinness!

This might come as a shock but I really don't think I have even had a Guinness before, a Black and Tan, yes, but not a straight pint of the G. I visited the brewery today and I was completely blown away. Magnificent, educational, they did a fabulous job with all of it. Heaps of staff to help you through the beer journey. I even got emotional as I was watching vintage footage of a "cooper" (now I know what that is) making a barrel by hand, yes, you heard me right, emotional! Then came the taste test and learned how to drink this stuff! You first inhale and hold your breath, take a gulp of beer, hold it in your mouth a few seconds, then swallow it while you exhale. This allows you to taste the flavors in all of the different areas in your mouth, and it really worked! Then on to the finale, on the 7th floor, you were given your reward after the tour with a pint of the black stuff at the Gravity Bar, with a 360 degree view of the city. It was happening in the there!

I then went from drinking, to church. St. Patrick's Cathedral (1192!) was having an Evensong, the members of the church chorus sing the mass, if you will. Got emotional there too, natch. Jonathan Swift (Gulliver's Travels, 1726!) was dean there for 32 years and is buried there also. On his grave in the nave, his self-penned epitaph reads "He lies where furious indignation can no longer rend his heart". Heavy.Read more

Christchurch is the largest Protestant church in Dublin. It is an Irish Episcopal Church, part of the worldwide Anglican communion. The first presentation of Handel's Messiah took place in an auditorium across the street, which no longer exists. Underneath the church are remains of a previous building, and several historical and archaeological displays. One shows a gospel book that comes from the early medieval period.Read more
