      Cinque Terre

      Cinque Terre ist die Bezeichnung für 5 Nachbargemeinden an der schroffen italienischen Riviera. Die jahrhundertealten Küstendörfer sind bekannt für ihre bunten Häuser und die terrassenförmig an den Steilhängen angelegten Weinberge. In den Häfen liegen Fischerboote vor Anker und die Trattorien servieren Meeresfrüchtespezialitäten und Pesto, die berühmte Sauce der Region Ligurien. Der Wanderweg Sentiero Azzurro verbindet die Dörfer und bietet dabei Panoramaausblicke über das Meer. Lue lisää

      Cinque Terre National Park

      Into Cinque Terre where we went to three towns in a day! So fun and so beautiful! Locals here are nice too, we got lost and wanted food so they walked us 15 mins to their favorite takeaway home stole place an date with us🥹🥹 We all had “local dishes” like octopus pasta and pesto which was invented in this area! So good we watched the sunset and got in the water, then took the train to see a nighttime town. Then it was time to leave, I will come back :(Lue lisää

      Travel day to La Spezia, Cinque Terre

      Our day started off with a stop at Poste Italia. I was hoping for a UPS store experience but unfortunately I got a typical Italian experience. Slow…Gabe was losing his mind. We got some things packed up into a medium sized box and shipped it home. It cost $36 euros. I thought that was pretty good. We are out of room in the car. We finally got on the road to La Spezia. It’s the town we are going to sleep in for the night while we visit the Cinque Terre or the 5 towns. Cinque = 5, Terre= Towns.
      Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso
      We drove straight to Riomaggiore. Which is the 1st town . We parked and walked down 100+ steps to the marina. Gabe rented us a little boat to see the towns from the water. The boat company suggested we get here as soon as possible because the weather is going to be bad for the next few days. So we got a layered up with gloves, beanies and rain jackets. Even though it was chilly and foggy, the views are beautiful. Seeing the towns from the water is a must! We were starving of course. A family walked in front of me carrying a paper cone filled with Fritto Misto!. Shrimp, calamari, fish, fries…Yumm. I pulled out my phone and found the place. Andrew was in heaven because they had fish and chips. Renee got chicken nuggets which were pretty good. We didn’t get a photo of this. Next time…
      Our boat guide was a nice, young man from La Spezia who likes to surf. He told Andrew about surfing in the area. We pulled into the marina in Vernazza to have a little walk around. They have cute shops and lots of restaurants. This town is what the movie Luca was filmed based around.
      We got back on the boat and finished the tour down the coast line. It’s not very long. Approximately 2 miles. Lots of people hike from each town but its very hilly and there are tons of steps. It takes approx 5 hours to walk to all the towns. That’s why there is a train and its so easy. Just hop on and off. The ride back to the marina was interesting. The weather was much worse and the rain started. We did have a cover thankfully. But we all for sure got wet.
      We walked back to the car and Gabe got his first parking ticket. Oops. We drove back to La Spezia and checked into the hotel. Our suitcases would not fit in the elevator because its so small. So we had to walk up 5 flights of stairs. Oh we haven’t discussed how the floors here are 0,1,2,3…So the 5th floor is really the 6th.
      We took the boat captains recommendation for dinner and walked over around 7:30pm. I had a different version of bean soup. It was chickpea and farro. La Spezia seems to be a nice town. It’s a huge shipping port. And the Italian Navy has a base there. The ships were super cool to see docked in the harbor.

      Cinque Terre is a National Park and a UNESCO world heritage site.

      **Laundry saga - Things have been going well with the washers. I successfully washed at the townhouse and they had a laundry line outside in the yard. I still don’t want to hang dry undies and socks. Hoping to find a coin operated laundry soon.      Lue lisää

      Cinque Terre

      A must see UNESCO protected villages. Colorful with amazing views all around. The road to here is a killer though and I mean literally as we almost got hit by a speeding car on a steep narrow road. I advise the train or the boat to see the amazing villages.Lue lisää

      Cinque Terre Hike

      Levanto to Riomaggiore - quite a rough hike but beautiful scenery (don't know exactly how long the hike was but I would estimate about 25 km and more or less 1500 m of up- and downhill hiking).

      Höhenwanderweg nach Corniglia

      Ich habe keine feste Planung für die Cinque Terre. Beim Frühstück überlege ich mir, wie ich den Tag heute gestalten möchte. Sehr gern möchte ich nochmal Manarola sehen und auch wandern. Nachdem hier ja recht viele Touristen unterwegs sind, möchte ich den relativ einfachen Hauptwanderweg durch de Cinque Terre lieber vermeiden. Also entscheide ich mich für den Höhenwanderweg über Volastra ins nächste Cinque Terre-Dorf Corniglia.

      Nach einem sehr gemütlichen Morgen fahre ich mit dem Zug nach Riomaggiore, das letzte Dorf der Cinque Terre. Ich stelle allerdings fest, dass der Wanderpfad zwischen Riomaggiore und Manarola gesperrt ist. Also Planänderung! Da es zwischen den beiden Dörfern keine echte Alternative gibt, bleibt nur der Zug. Daher fahre ich eine Station zurück nach Manarola, das geht ja hier alles einfach!

      Ich laufe durch das Dorf nach oben vorbei an dem netten Hotel, in dem Udo und ich zweimal übernachtet haben. Der schöne Garten mit den Zitronenbäumchen ist auch noch da. Die Sonne scheint, es ist warm, wenngleich nicht mehr hochsommerlich. Da es inzwischen schon früher Nachmittag ist, habe ich auch schon wieder Hunger. Mein Vesper esse ich dann noch in den Höhenlagen von Manarola an einem schönen Aussichtspunkt an der Kirche 😉😋.

      Eine ältere Dame, der ich begegne, ist sehr verärgert, dass ich keine Maske trage. Ich bin verdutzt, ich bin doch draußen? Dann frage ich bei einem Restaurant nach. Tatsächlich gilt hier Maskenpflicht auch draußen. Ok, ich kann es auch gut verstehen. Hier sind auf relativ engem Raum viele Menschen unterwegs. Das leuchtet mir ein.

      Dann wandere ich recht steil durch die Weinberge bergauf. Ein paar Wanderer sind unterwegs, es ist jedoch nicht sehr voll. Immer wieder gibt es wunderbare Ausblicke auf die Küste! An ein paar wenigen Stellen ist der Weg etwas ausgesetzt und führt über felsigen Untergrund schmal am Hang entlang.

      Es macht wieder mal großen Spaß, durch diese tolle Landschaft oberhalb der mit Weinreben bewachsenen Hänge zu wandern! Dann kommt Corniglia in Sicht, dass sich auf einem Felssporn oberhalb des Meeres drängt. Der Ort selbst ist nicht so attraktiv wie Manarola oder Vernazza, finde ich. Das liegt auch daran, dass er sich nicht zwischen den Rebhängen Richtung Meer öffnet.

      Was toll ist, ist jedoch die Aussicht von der sundowner Bar! 😎🍹 Ich ergattere ein heißbegehrtes Tischchen, hihi, Glück gehabt! ;) In dieser location trinke ich den obligatorischen Aperol Spritz. Nebenan sitzen zwei Frauen aus Süddeutschland. Wir kommen ins Gespräch, das ist sehr nett. Eine der beiden ist auch schon häufig alleine mit dem Camper unterwegs gewesen. Ich selbst habe auf meiner Reise keine andere alleinreisende Frau auf den Campingplätzen gesehen.

      Ich genieße den wunderschönen Sonnenuntergang in dieser herrlichen Lage! Und beschließe, in Corniglia noch etwas zu essen. Es gibt Miesmuscheln, sehr lecker! 😋

      Mit dem Zug fahre ich wieder zurück nach Deiva Marina - das war ein richtig schöner Tag mit vielen wunderbaren Eindrücken und sportlicher Herausforderung! 💪🏃‍♀️☀️      Lue lisää

      Dag 8. Uitstapje naar Cinque terre

      Na een bezoekje aan de plaatselijke bakker en de groentemarkt, ontbijten we en doen we onze zwaarste stapschoenen aan. We oefenen ze al wat in op de trap achter on appartement dat naar de hoger gelegen baan gaat waar we de bus nemen richting La Spezia. De bus brengt ons niet dichter maar juist verder van het treinstation, dus we zetten er nog even de stap in, dwars door het stadje, voordat we kunnen mee aanschuiven voor de aankoop van een Cinque Terre kaart waarmee we in het park mogen, de bus en de trein kunnen nemen en gratis naar het WC-gaan. We nemen de trein naar Corniglia, het middelste van de 5 dorpjes. Hoge woonkazernes op elkaar geprangd op een voorschootje rots groot, zoals we nu al een beetje gewoon zijn, maar juist iets authentieker maar daarom niet minder bezocht door vooral Amerikaanse en Chinese toeristen. Waarschijnlijk stond Cinque Terre ergens bij hen in de boekskes en zal de Euro laag staan.
      Aangezien de kustweg ingestort is, moeten we een andere weg nemen naar Manarola, een dorpje terug. Eerst 1,5 km recht (300 meter) omhoog, dan een beetje valsplat en dan weer 1,5 km recht omlaag tot we weer op zeeniveau zijn. Over amper 5 km doen we 2 uur. De affiches voor de trail van de 5Terre negeer ik vakkundig.
      We nemen de trein terug naar La Spezia, de bus tot bij ons en genieten er languit van dat Katrien nog wat energie over heeft om voor ons te koken.

      Swimming in the Mediterranean

      Can't really come here and not dip your toe in right?

      We walked along what looked like an abandoned and uncared for esplanade area, found the remnants of an abandoned touristy area, managed to stumble upon an entrance which took you down a tunnel where there was so much blood that it looked like someone had been murdered there the night before, found a rickety ladder with a bit of rope dangling off the bottom from which you could just reach to get into the ocean.

      Craig went first, kids followed, I minded the gear, but then we agreed it would be impossible for a person with a dodgy shoulder to get back up again. Thus, my toe has remained undipped. It was cold, so not sure I mind so much.      Lue lisää

      Second Bus tour

      2 words that will forever epitomize all things beautiful in my mind. On Saturday we went on our second bus tour to the cinque terre, an area made up of 5 very small towns where the houses are built into the mountains and trail along the beautiful crystal clear waters of an inlet in the Mediterranean sea. This is the perfect combination of land and sea, flora and fauna, mountain and beach side. As we ride along the water I begin to wonder whether what I was seeing was real or just a dream because the beauty was almost unbearable. Words such as breathtaking, awesome, marvelous and brilliant come to mind when describing this scene. I hope that you enjoy these pictures!Lue lisää

      3 town day

      Yesterday we hiked 1/2 way to the town south of us to find the trail washed out along the ocean. So we trekked back to the train station and hitched a ride. We probably walked the same distance from Corniglia to Manarola. The first part from Corniglia from the town to sea level directly down some stairs. The rest was relatively level. Had a great time touring the city. Lunch was spaghetti with meat sauce. Great. Ordered what we thought was lemonade, but was a lemon flavour shooter. Met a nice couple from Wisconsin at the next table. Margot bought a nice sweater and some scarfs. Train back to Corniglia for a nap before dinner. Wound up in a bar just before early closing and had ravioli for dinner. Reservations are needed on the weekends.
      Today was the 3 town day including Corniglia. We trekked north to Vernazza. A 3km hike that the guide said would take 1 1/2 hours. I laughed as I repeated this to Margot. Well it took us one hour 20 not including the break for fresh squeezed orange juice at the 1/2 way point. Toured the town with a pizza lunch break. Next with took a train to the most northen of the Cinque terre towns, Monterosso. A busy place with a beach for showing off the most skin and little fabric as one could. Had a gelati break. Temps today were low 20s. Train back to Corniglia for a nap. We've walked each way to the train station here by road to avoid the stairs down to the trail. 3/4 mile each way. Photos are from yesterday as Max per post is 6. Running 6 miles each morning before a day of walking has played havoc on my quads. Basically 900 ft of climb over 3 miles. Then to run down hill as well. There is no flat portions.      Lue lisää
