La Spezia & the train past Cinque Terre

      July 21, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

For our last full day in Italy we planned a coastal day trip, catching the 8am train from Milan to La Spezia, a coastal port town to the south east of Milan, then another train past Cinque Terre (the Five Towns) to Genoa, a coastal city due south of Milan, before an 8pm train back to Milan and bed. These photos are of La Spezia and the train trip to Genoa past Cinque Terre.Read more

      Ciao bella italia

      October 27, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Angekommen in unserem letzten Reiseland in Europa: Italien

      October 14, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Ach so, auf ein Schloss und vorbei an historischen Gebäuden und der Uferpromende ging es ja auch noch aber das war nur Nebensache. 😉

      Florence to La Spezia!

      September 13, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

It is impossible to travel without some hiccups in getting to the destination 😂 you can only be adaptable and roll with the punches. My first train to Pisa was about 15 min delayed off the tracks so of course I missed the connection to La Spezia. So...rerouted...took a little detour, and made another connection and here I am! In La Spezia! So excited to be here, being on the coast/near water is my happy place :) I'm also super stoked with the hostel I'm staying at, already seems very social and the women working at reception sat me down for a good 20 min and gave me all the recommendations for the next 2 and a half days!!! I haven't had that kind of kindness at any hostel I've stayed at, so great! It's also right on the water so it's a perfect location and about a 10 min bus to Cinque Terre!!!Read more

On to La Spezia and the Cinque Terre

      July 27, 2022 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

Tonight, as I write this, I am sitting on my balcony, drinking coke and watching all the people in the piazza socializing the Italian way. Jen is crunching a sugar dough cookie in my ear, as we both watch kids kick a soccer ball and the edge of the modern looking fountain filling with people who are just sitting and enjoying the night.

This was our third straight day of travel and we are really enjoying the slowness of the moment. We are settled in to La Spezia for 2 nights so we don't feel any pressure to do more.

This morning started off slow with everyone sleeping in. Our train didn't leave until noon so we took advantage of the respite to catch up on some rest and just approach the day with no sense of urgency. After all... this is Italy....

We once again got to the train station early enough to get some breakfast and prepare for the journey to La Spezia. The train was only 3 hours but by now the traveling was getting monotonous. We arrived without incident, except for the Italians and their weird mask rules. Nobody wore masks on the train, until we were just coming in to La Spezia. Then a guy came through the cabin and had every put on masks. We kept them on until the train stopped, we got off, and then everyone took their masks off. Very weird. And it wasn't that we took them off and we weren't supposed to. Hardly anyone in the whole station was wearing a mask. I guess they wanted to be extra careful for when people exit the train. I am not sure.

Jen knocked it out of the park again with our accommodations. It is perfect for our needs and right near the action. After we got settled we went for a walk down by the Mediterranean. We wandered a bit, ate some Gelato, got groceries, and headed back to our place to cook our own food and just relax. Tomorrow we are wanting to have a really early start to see as much of the Cinque Terre as we can. It will be a long hot day but we are sooooo looking forward to it.

So, with that I will bid you good night.

      Abend in La Spezia

      March 30 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Read more

      La Spezia Port

      April 14, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

This was due to be our day to visit the Cinque Terre, but it was scuppered by the rail strike. So, what to do on a beautiful sunny day? We planned to take a boat trip to Portovenere, which we were told was lovely, but we missed the boat! 😂. You can see a picture of the boat leaving just as we arrived at the quay.
But once we were at the port it struck us how vast it is. Apparently there are 5.1 kilometres of quay, and thousands of boats. There is a naval base; super yacht marina (full to the brim); working fishing boats; cruise boats; ship building facilities; and vast numbers of private boats. We spent a couple of hours walking around the port, and still didn't see it all. And for some reason, even though it is a working fishing harbour, it didn't smell like a typical British fishing harbour. Why is that?
Thoroughly enjoyable morning, finished off with a lovely fish meal at a local Osteria.

      Cinque Terre

      June 5 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Cinque Terre is a cluster of 5 villages spread along the coast and they are now part of a national park. They can be accessed by train, boat, walking, or by a small car (not recommended!). We took the train from La Spezia and were at the first village Riomaggiore in about 20 mins. We were heading to the second village Manarola which was 10 mins further.

This is a very cute village built on a very steep slope. The hills are terraced and grow olives, grapes and lemons. We walked out to a headland and the views of the town and the sea were beautiful.

We then hopped back on the train, skipped the next town Corniglia, and went to Vernazza. Once again very cute with a breakwater protecting a small marina. Some people were swimming and while the water was very clear the beach wasn’t really up to Australian standards. By this time it was getting very crowded with large groups coming through. We had a great lunch at one of the restaurants on the piazza.

Our final town was Monterosso. This is the largest of the towns and the one with the biggest beach - mostly pebbles with some sand.

We walked around town and stopped for a spritz and a beer before catching a boat back to La Spezia. The views along the coast were sensational.

While you can walk between the villages it would be very difficult and would take a few days. The hills are very steep and you could see a number of landslides had happened.

Tomorrow we are off to Pisa and Florence.
