      Dag 49

      May 31, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Read more

      Ausflug nach Capri 🍋

      July 25, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Read more

Isle of Capri - part 1.

      June 4, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

No ruins today but more picture postcard beauty as we spent most of the day on the Isle of Capri. What a beautiful place.

We went by a hydrofoil ferry from Salerno which stopped first at Amalfi and then at Positano. (Positano looks just like it is portrayed in the movies such as "Under the Tuscan Sun". No it's not in Tuscany but on the Amalfi Coast but if you know the movie you'll remember why the town of Positano makes a couple of appearances.)

Once on the Isle of Capri we caught the funicular or cable car up to the main square of the town of Capri. Next was a walking tour through the gorgeous alleys, through the shopping area with all the high end shops (think blouses or dresses around €750-1100 and they weren't the most expensive). It is a playground of the rich and famous as well as a popular tourist spot for people like us! We had plenty of spare time to further explore before going on a boat that took us around the whole island.

      Capri (2)

      October 1, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Read more

      Capri

      July 27, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Capri

      October 5, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

All I can say is our accommodations are great in Anacapri but getting to it is an OMG I am going to die situation. After arriving by ferry you have two choices to make it to Anacapri. One is to walk it or you can take a bus. We chose the latter because we had no idea how long it would take. The bus is just a little bigger than a pickup van. We are so jammed-packed in the bus that it is no wonder why people die in bus accidents or tip them over and crush people. It's all about the money, no care about safety. We proceed up the hill in a winding fashion holding on for our dear life. With every twist and turn or the slam of the breaks I wack Jane with my stiff knapsack, pissing her off as she is already under stress from the ride. Nicole can only look one way and that is the water below the edge of the cliff. We stop for another bus to pass through with motorbikes sneaking in first. The bus scrapes by nicking the review mirror on our bus. We are a bunch of wack jobs getting off. Our accommodations are fabulous and give a tropical feel to our vacation. We go to a restaurant recommended by our host, she states they have very good lemon risotto. Of course, that is what I ordered, and was disappointed. It had very little shrimp in it and I did not taste lemon, but more like Kraft Dinner. We settled fairly early as everyone was tired. The next day was beautiful. Breakfast was self-serve and a big spread. After we headed to the chair lift not far from our place. That was the best 14 euros spent. It was a smooth ride up and the views were okay but coming down was spectacular. We spent about an hour and a half up at the top of the island. We were above the clouds, clouds moved in making the view not clear. Boats were specks in the water. The lift down was a total view of Anacapri and Capri. After Miriam and I walked and shopped. We walked around with Aperol spritz passing the police with no issues at all. I found a vending machine that sold many items including a vibrator. They sell everything here! We stopped for lunch with a bottle of wine and had a flirtatious waiter with a great sense of humor. The two of us stumbled back with me almost peeing my pants at the gate over something so trivial. The rest of the gang went and toured Capri meeting us back at the room for some afternoon wine that was locked in one of the bedrooms. Jane arranged dinner reservations at a swanky hotel. She was stressed about the cost but we have been well below our eating expenses. Drinks at sunset on the terrace and a wonderful gourmet meal with great bread, fish, and petitè for desserts. Our waiter again, was awesome and helpful and funny with some arrogants. We walked back through some dark walkway back to our space. Me I tooted back, trying to be quiet but failing miserably. It was like 25 days of buildup helping me along. Of course, I laughed, and Miriam too. We ended the evening with red wine and 60% chocolate. Yummy!!_Read more

      Capri

      July 17, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Absolutely magical. Until the day tourists arrive.

We'd originally planned to do a day trip to Capri from Sorrento. I'm so glad we changed our minds and stayed for a couple of nights. I'm sure I wouldn't have loved Capri as much if we'd only done a day trip. Too many tourists, I'm sure it's doing irreparable damage.

We stumbled onto via Krupp at dusk and had this amazing path almost to ourselves. I can't explain it. It was such a special and unexpected moment.

Capri is best when the large day crowds have left the island, and you can find a quiet spot to yourself.

      Capri

      May 28, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Day 25 - Capri - Best Day Ever

      October 4, 2017 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Today was absolutely the best day ever. And Capri is absolutely the best place ever. It is basically a giant island made up of giant cliffs and giant rock formations that stick hundreds of feet out of the Mediterranean Sea, with views of the Bay of Naples, the Sorrento Coast, the Amalfi Coast, Mount Vesuvius, and, at some points, just water as far as the eye can see. About three quarters of the island is beautiful empty cliffs while the other quarter manages to squeeze a couple of small towns - Capri, down on the water, and Anacapri - up in the cliffs.

We started our day by walking the short but steep walk from our beautiful bed and breakfast down to Anacapri town (with a friendly kitten) to catch the chair lift to the top of Mount Solaro. I am terrified of heights and was terrified to get on this single-person chair lift to the highest point on the island. I didn't do well. I gripped the railing and either stared at the cliff on my left or closed my eyes the entire way...not once looking at the beautiful view of the water and town and cliffs on my right. Once we made it to the top, we got off and walked around and I got to actually take in the beautiful scenery. It was amazing. I am so glad we took this trip in September/October because there were not that many people on the mountain. I imagine in the summer there is barely room to stand, let alone grab a seat overlooking the cliffs. We had a cold beer and relaxed and I built up the strength to take the lift down instead of hiking all the way down. The ride down was beautiful.

Once we got back down, we had a quick pizza, and took the crazy bus down to the Capri marina for a private boar tour around the island. I'm not sure what to say about this tour except that it was the absolute highlight of the trip. I can't think of much else I've ever done to top it. We spent three hours in a private boat, riding around the entire island of Capri, sipping wine and beer, swimming, and taking in the views. We went into several caves, swam in caves and grottos, and saw the island in the best way imaginable. The white grotto was amazing, with it's natural Madonna statue. The green grotto was beautiful, and Tim was able to scale the rocks inside and dive in. But nothing could ever compare to the blue grotto.

I had read so much about the blue grotto this past year. I knew it would be amazing. But everything I read said that you paid a small boat a lot of money to take you inside the grotto with a dozen other boats, turn you around, and you're out in 2 minutes. I had also read that, before and after hours (9-5), the boats and the cops leave and sometimes the locals just swim in. I had wanted to do this and had told everyone I would do this for the past year. Well that's how our boat trip ended. He dropped us off near the entrance and told us to have fun. We swam over to the tiny opening (I have no idea how any boat can fit in), we pulled ourselves in on the rope, and we saw the most beautiful thing imaginable. The entire cave is lit up with a glowing bright blue water that I can't even describe. We spent a long time in the cave, swimming and climbing and diving off rocks. It was unreal.

Then we rode back to the marina, dried off, changed, had a good pasta dinner, and now we're ready for bed. What a day!

      Day 24 - Capri!

      October 3, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Wow...Capri is beautiful! We left Naples this morning for the short ferry ride to Capri. Then we hailed a cab from the ferry port and rode in the back of the open convertible up through the mountains and along the windy rode to our Airbnb in the highlands of Anacapri. We decided to stay up here in the quieter Monte Solaro area instead of down in the crazy packed Capri, filled with day trippers. Our Airbnb, which is actually a family owned bed and breakfast, is probably the highest point that we could be staying, with gorgeous views of the cliffs, the Mediterranean Sea, and the island of Ischia. We ordered delivery salad and pasta and set up on the pool deck for a late lunch. Then we walked down the steep hill (about a 5 minute walk down...but about 20 minutes back up) to the Anacapri town. We walked around for a little bit and then returned to the pool deck for the beautiful sunset. We decided not to go back down for dinner, since I am still not feeling great. We are going to have another relaxing night and hopefully I will be feeling better tomorrow to explore the island.Read more
