      Roma Italy.

      27 de noviembre de 2023, Italia ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

Rome wasn't built in a day but that's all we had on this whirlwind tour! After disembarking from the ship we took a day tour into the city centre. 1 1/2 hrs drive and then a walk to the Colosseum. Amazing! Then the Trevi foundation which was my favourite. We ate Pizza and drank Spritz. Then a walking tour..in the rain..to many other sites before boarding the bus...soaking wet.Leer más

      ROM |

      13 de marzo de 2023, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

      13:40 🛬 Ankunft in FCO
16:30 📍 Ankunft in der Unterkunft
17:00 🍕 Erstmal was essen. Natürlich sofort eine
Pizza.

Italien - Rom - Cabonara - Aperol Spritz

      Tonino and Pieras house

      29 de junio de 2023, Italia ⋅ 🌙 75 °F

Sara (who visited us 10 years ago) has 2 children now. Lisa drew Giuseppe and nailed his hair!

A fantastic lasagna, potatoes and bruschetta using Tonino’s own olive oil, and a visit by Sara and her 2 smart and beautiful children Elisa and Davide. Davide is 8, the same age Joey was when we first met.

It’s hard to beat the Italian family experience.

Venice , unique , romantic and confusing

      6 de octubre de 2017, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We said arrivederci to Roma this morning and took a 3 1/2 hour train ride into Venice. Our first sight of this city was ...wow there really are no roads , just waterways to get around ! Our hotel was a 20 minutes walk from the train station through narrow streets , alleys and over bridges. We spent the afternoon touring around the Rialto bridge , Doge's palace and watching the hundreds of gondolas taking tourists on the typical boat ride , just like you imagine when you think of Venice. We went in to St Mark's Basilica and one of the very crabby men who worked there told me I had to cover my legs because I had shorts on. With some quick thinking I wrapped my coat around my waist and did the zipper up - instant skirt to my knees lol. Problem solved ! Such a different cathedral from those in Rome. It was kept very dark and it seemed like there were no windows. Barry and I would also like to know who turned the heat off in Venice. This is the first time in 3 weeks we have had to think about pulling out our long pants. And we had jackets on during the day ! It is very chilly here 😬. We ate some dinner and picked up a few things for breakfast and called it a night. We only have one full day here tomorrow and want to be up early. 😊Leer más

      Next stop Rome !

      2 de octubre de 2017, Italia ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Up early and Alfonso drive us all the way in to Amalfi to catch our bus to Salerno. In Salerno we got the train to Rome. So much less stressful getting out of Amalfi than trying to get there a few days ago 😊. After a 3 hour ride we arrived at Termini station. Our hotel was a 15 minute walk from the station. We are very happy that most of our places have been within walking distance. We decided to walk and see where it was even though check in wasn't until 4 pm. We found in with no problem so we walked around the neighbourhood a bit then grabbed some lunch. Pesto for Barry and lasagna for me and a Perino beer 🍻. It's an Italian beer and very good. At 4 we checked in. You have to take one of those old fashioned elevators where you open the metal gate door yourself get in and close it behind you . Kinda cool. Roberta , the property manager, checked us in. She's lovely and so welcoming. She made sure we had everything we needed , gave us some directions and resto suggestions and then we arranged to have our breakfast around 8 am. There is also a rooftop patio that we can use. You go up a wrought iron spiral staircase inside the hotel to get to it. She also left s bottle of wine in our room as a welcome gift. We will definitely enjoy it in the patio one night and take advantage of our view over Rome . We headed out to the tourist info booth back at the train station area , got some maps and realized we are within walking distance of everything !!! On the way back we grabbed some sandwiches to have in the room and decided to stay in and start fresh in the morning. We booked our tickets to the Coliseum, Forum and Palantine which we will do tomorrow. Now we are just chilling in our room with the window wide open listening to the sounds of Rome including the tram that runs right out front of our place 😂😊. We have had no problems sleeping after our very full days. Looking forward to tomorrow's adventure. Stay tuned 💕💕Leer más

Can you say , crazy travel day?!

      28 de septiembre de 2017, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Sooo what a day of travel it was ! Started off leaving our host Anthony in Barcelona at 6:00am. We needed to be at the airport for a flight to Naples at noon but because of heightened security at the airport we had to be there 3 hours early. Our flight was smooth , except for those RyanAir landings! So rough ! We then needed to buy bus tickets to get to Salerno our next leg of the voyage. No problem we had 45 minutes before our bus left. Great! We verified with not only the person who sold us the ticket but also with the people working at the info booth inside the airport where we should go to get to the bus stop . We followed their directions and waited. Well don't we look up and see our bus going by us further out in the street. 😳. Plan B ... try to get to the train which meant a bus to the train station then who knows ...or wait 2 1/2 hours for the next bus. We decided to wait. Our bus tickets were still good for that bus too. Once again verified the bus stop only for the lady at the info counter to tell us , the busses stop right outside the main door 😡. I was stressed knowing the 4pm bus was the last one to Salerno for the day. Thankfully it came and away we went. We arrived in Salerno and got tickets for our next bus trip to Amalfi. Ok great ! From Amalfi we had a 5 minute window to get the bus to Scala. Well the roads are crazy ! Narrow and twisty and turny with nothing but a guard rail between you and the coast. Up and up we went ! The scenery is amazing and it is unbelievable how these bus drivers do it. Here we thought the road to Hana in Hawaii was tricky ! 😫. We made it finally to Amalfi but had to wait for the next bus to Scala. Our B&b owner was picking us up in her car to bring us to her place. Katia is lovely and kind. She stopped by a pizzeria do we could get something to take out. She also helped plan our 3 full days here ! This place is unbelievable Our part of the place is like a small home. We have our own patio looking our over Amalfi and Ravelo . We can't believe it! It made the long long travel day so worth it !!! That and the delicious wood fired oven pizza we ate. Can't wait to get up, have breakfast made by Katia's mom , on the main patio area. Katia will drive us down to Ravello and drop us off. We will look around for a few hours then take a bus to Amalfi and spend the evening there ! 💕😊Leer más

      Buongiorno Roma

      20 de septiembre de 2017, Italia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Another long day of travel this time from Catania to the hills of Rome – about 760km. We started with yet another wonderful breakfast at the B&B – delicious! And then final packing and a chat about Sicilian food with Federico (whom I had been emailing but never spoken too) he explained our mistake at Il Sale – only eat the Pizza – the rest is crap (well we had learned that the hard and expensive way!).
Leaving the B&B (which is apparently evolving into a boutique hotel – I can understand that as they did a very good job with the B&B) we walked around the corner to catch the Alibus to the airport (4 euro’s, free Wi-Fi and takes about 20 minutes – very convenient). The boarding pass had stipulated that we needed to arrive from check in and luggage drop at 11am (this was for a 1.30 flight and despite the fact we had completed online check in anyway (but hey it was a weird Spanish airline and I wasn’t going to argue with whatever they required). We arrived in a timely manner and duly lined up and waited… and waited… and waited… at 11.40 someone turned up… at 1150 they started processing people.. we were sorted by 12.05 (so glad we arrived at 11am). Another massive line and then we were through security at about 12.30 and had an hour to kill before the flight was due to leave. This was spent wandering the shops, marveling at the numerous dogs wandering about the terminal waiting to board (including the one packed in the carry-on bag and barking in a shrill and REALLY annoying manner!) and generally being astounded by the masses and masses of people thronging about. At last it was time to board – again this took ages and by the time I got onto the plane they had run out of space for hand luggage and were trying to tell me my backpack had to go in the hold (I argued I have my Venetian glass in there and they took pity on me and found space). There was a scarey amount of crashing and banging, the cabin crew seemed to have trouble with the PA and then finally – about 45 minutes late we took off in a very erratic manner for our hour and a bit flight to Rome.
Throughout the flight there were various weird and troubling noises, there was NO air-conditioning, no cabin service and the toilets were rank (and I am not that fussy really – hey I’m a scout, I pee in the bush if need be!) Finally we were relieved to survive a very bouncy landing at Rome’s Fuimicino Airport. Into the terminal by bus and then a not toooo long wait for our bags to come off before we headed off, following the signs, to the station for the Leonardo Express (14 euro) into the main Rome train station – this was a non-stop service and took 32 minutes – very handy. There we, relying on my feeble Italian, were directed to the train to Zagarolo via a ticket machine where we purchased the required tickets for 2.90euro (I was hoping I had said – I’m sorry I only understand a little Italian- where is the train to Zagarolo” and that the answer of “20” was pertinent). Anyway we got on the train with about 20 seconds to spare and it pulled off. We then spent the next 35 minutes worrying that we were travelling where we were hoping to go… Phew! The 5th station, at exactly the expected time, turned out to be … Zagarollo!!! Yea!!
Kirstin had spotted a supermarket as we arrived so I nipped down the road and made a few purchases while she minded the cases and then called the hostel for pick up (how convenient). We were soon in a nice van and a mere 5 minutes later we were entering Rome Wiki Hostel – a terribly weird, kind of hippy, trippy place in the hills of Rome. We have a “Private Room” which includes an ensuite at the princely sum of 30 euro pp per night (inc breakfast, free shuttle to and from station, a kitchen, wi-fi and cheap food and beverages if required - inc a 7euro pp pizza party on Friday nights).
We settled in and then off to the kitchen (where Kirstin resisted the urge to sterilise the dishes and contented herself with giving everything a good wash) to make dinner. We had been carrying clam sauce and squid ink pasta since Venice and added some salad and cheese to make a delicious and filling meal (the wine I had been lugging around since Germany also helped – well we did have to drink it as we couldn’t risk taking to Dubai after all!). Sated… or perhaps to be honest… stuffed… the next step was to plan the next 2 days in Rome… and actually Zagarolo which looks like a really nice little town!
