      Bologna

      February 10, 2020 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Me alegra seguir vivo 🥳

Before leaving Florence, I realized there’s a tram stop in my honor (“De Andrè”) 😌

In Bologna, I couldn’t see as much as I wanted to, as I didn’t find where to leave my suitcase and had to carry it with me. Nonetheless, I was able to walk around the center for a couple of hours and could see some interesting stuff, such as: the “Fontana della Ninfa e del Cavallo Marino”, the “Parco della Montagnola”, the “Porta Galliera” or the “Porta Lame”.

I didn’t get the feeling that the city is as beautiful as Florence, but then again I couldn’t explore that much. I sure need to come back 😉.

Before going to the airport, I ate a pizza roll at a place in front of the main station, where they also had pizza with French fries and sausages as toppings. Really Italy? You can’t stand pineapple on a pizza but you can do this? Smh 🤦🏽‍♂️

The flight back home was way worse than the one before because it was so bumpy. Kinda expected that due to the storm in Cologne. I’m just happy to still be alive 🥳.

And that was my little adventure in Italy. Let’s we what’s next!

      Nach Bologna

      September 15 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      April 21 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

      Modena - Balsamic & Markets

      September 14, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Yesterday we caught the train to Modena the town famous for Balsamic vinegar. We did a taste testing of the different aged varieties from 8-25+ years & heard how it was traditionally made & still is - was really interesting. Then we went to ANOTHER amazing food market for lunch & checked out my first cathedral in Italy. After catching train back to Bologna we did a 2 hour evening walking tour, which was also great to find out some of the history. Interesting facts - The steps in the photo were made that way so the Pope could ride his horse up & down them as he was never meant to touch the ground. Bologna has the old university in the world starting in 1100's. Finished off the day with an apretizo - typical pre-dinner drink in Italy & you get the snacks included in the price of the drink. Then dinner at a real traditional family owned Italian restaurant we fluked finding in the locals part of town. Was yumm. We did 18k steps for the day!Read more

Bologna to Göteborg through the alps

      April 11 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Early morning in Bologna, leaving The Social Hub (a very nice hotel with an apparent ambition to be a youthful hotel but still in a good way). Today was train strike day all over Italy, and it was uncertain what effect it would have on my trip. My best shot was that I was travelling on a DB ticket with an ÖBB train (yes, the very same RailJet luxury one as on the way down, lucky me!) and that I was leaving at 7:45 so I might get far enough early enough.

It turned out that the strike did not have any effect on my train ride whatsoever, and thank you very much for that!

All my connections worked perfectly. We had a standstill for a half an hour in Fulda I think it was, because of something with the police. The information over the speakers were generally in both German, English and Italian when in Italy, but for some reason this part about why the police were there was only in German. And my German has its limitations, to say the least.

But I had plenty of time in Hamburg, so 30 mins here or there did not really matter.

Arrived in Göteborg after Snälltåget took me from Hamburg to Malmö and then Öresundståget Malmö-Göteborg, just on time 11:20.

Two long and very well-functioning train rides in a few days

      Second work day in Pistoia

      April 10 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Day 2, new workshops, today about environmental indicators; what they could look like, what they should mean etc, excellent planning and execution by University of Twente 👏👏👏👏👏👏

Excellent lunch again, of course, and then after the day was finished I rushed to the train station to begin my journey back to Sweden.

Short trip today, only to Bologna for my morning departure, which might be a little too exciting since there is supposed to be a train strike in entire Italy tomorrow. It seems like it will start at 9:01, and my train leaves at 7:45 so it could work out. It is the ÖBB RailJet again, so perhaps I'll make it since it is not Italian. We'll see.

      To Milano

      November 29, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

I'm at the station in Bologna waiting for my train to Milan. It is an underground platform, which is nice since I didn't want to sit outside.

I wandered around for a bit and thought about lunch. However, I was just not hungry! So I stopped at a café and had a spritz... and a sbagliato. At 3 p.m., I walked to the hotel to pick up my suitcase. I reorganized to put my purse and its contents in my suitcase. The cab I requested arrived fast! There were about 50 teenagers in the lobby and they were all leaving. I couldn't get out the door! The hotel staff let me out another door.

The taxi took about 10 minutes and cost 11€. So much better than schlepping my suitcase for a 20-minute walk! The train ended up being 3 levels down. Thank goodness for elevators, escalators, and that I planned enough time!

The train was crowded, but it had assigned seats. It originated in Rome, so this was the 2nd to last stop. The ride was comfortable, and all was going well until about 2/3 the way there. Then train slowed down to a crawl. Later they came on the intercom and said there was a police action going on at one of the other Milan stations, and we were going to be late. No big deal for me since Sarah was running late, as well.

I didn't rush to get off the train since I wasn't in a hurry. I was in the 4th car, and by the time I got 2 the beginning of the 1st car, there was a major crush to get out. People trying to go both ways, but no one was moving. At one point, it was a little scary. I am guessing what happened was that since the train was 25 minutes late, ALL the people were getting on to go back south at the same time. As soon as we got off the train platform, it was fine. But it was a crazy 10 minutes!

I found the taxi area, but there were 2 or 3 separate taxi lines. And of course, no taxis! I finally had to get aggressive and jump to one of the few that arrived. The cab took about 20 minutes to Sarah's, and she was waiting at the door for me.
