      Pompeii ii

      October 4, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

More from what has been an excellent day touring Pompeii. It is huge and It is incredible to think how much material has been removed in order to expose the ruins. Work is still continuing with much of the area still to be unearthed. You will need all day to visit this site and you will need plenty of food and drink especially in the summer when there is no relief from the sunRead more

      Pompei and Salerno

      May 25, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

On Thursday we took a side trip by train from Salerno to Pompei. The train, by comparison to French trains, was clean, modern, had English notices and announcements, was inexpensive and on time. What is surprising is that the Italians we've met do not speak much English whereas the French do.
Pompei was fantastic! A bit of a lineup and a wait to get in but quite efficient and once in, you could wander wherever and avoid the crowds/tour groups. It's a marvel that so much has been uncovered and is intact. Even blown glass perfume vials and carved hair pins with such intricate details! Piecing together frescoes is the ultimate jigsaw puzzle. Amazing.
Yesterday we wandered around Salerno. We visit a lot of churches for the architecture and to see the opulence. Some are so full of glitz and some are in such inaccessible places it makes you wonder how, why??? They are a contradiction of the beauty and the macabre.
After paying cigarettes ☠ and beer🍺 to the young fellow at the fuel dock to look after our dinghy, we motored back to the sailboat. We were visited by a Swiss couple who invited us onto their catamaran for drinks which turned into dinner. It was a lovely night and they gave us lots of info and advice on harbours and places. They know another sailing couple from Bella Coola! It's always a pleasure meeting new people and hearing their stories.
Salerno is our last southern spot before we head north again and leave the boat at an as yet to be confirmed marina.

      Naples Day 2- Pompeii

      July 12, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Today, me, Emily, and Janik took a train to go explore the town of Pompeii. We went to the ruins, which are remnants of a village that were wiped away by an eruption from the nearby volcano- Mount Vesuvius. I did some research, and this town was built around the 9-8th century B.C. The city was covered by a blanket of volcanic ash which is how it was preserved so well. There even were people that were preserved- who had died in this town at the time. Kind of creepy, but really interesting. There was a lot of art that was preserved from that era- still found in the buildings on the walls, and also bits and pieces in a separate exhibition. There were coliseums, amphitheatres, restaurant kitchens, laundry baths, it was so interesting! And i’m not usually one for history. After a looooong time spent in the ruins, the scorching sun (and of course, a gelato later), we went to climb Mount Vesuvius itself. Which, I don’t know if it was a smart idea because walking around in the heat for 4 hours is tiring already. But off we went. We had a tour bus that would take us up most of the hike (which I very much appreciated), and it was about a 30/40 minute walk to the top. You know, it kind of just looked like a big rock with a hole- which I guess is what it is, but it was still cool. The view looking outward from the top was nice, with mountains and shoreline, I couldn’t complain! After, our tour bus ‘surprised’ us and took us to some dude’s limoncello shop. So we had a tasting of his limoncello, this liquer that he created which is a mix of limoncello and mozzarella, and one that is a mix of rum and mozzarella. Surprisingly, I actually really enjoyed the mozzarella shots- would definitely have it again. After that, we trained on home, had some aperol spritz and I had some gnocchi for dinner- which I was craving for this whole trip!!Read more

      Pompeji Ausgrabungen

      May 31, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

      Pompeii Arena, Guilia's House, Exit

      May 6 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Seeing the shady green orchards and gardens with Vesuvius looming above was strangely serene. Walking in to the huge, well-preserved arena was surreal - I can't believe that all of these ruins were so covered that the city was forgotten.

The few casts that are still on site are at the exit in glass displays. Heart-breaking and yes, fascinating.

I cant believe I saw Pompeii!

      July 25, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

      Miles: 8.3 Steps: 18937
      Flights stairs: 10

I remember learning all about Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius in grade school - seeing pics of the “frozen people” that had gotten caught in the volcanic eruption. And today, decades later, I found myself at the foot of Mt Vesuvius walking the streets of Pompeii! This trip is unreal.

We braved the intense heat and took a day trip, about 45 min south, to Pompeii and walked through the archeological site. Fascinating seeing the remains of the village, the whole time with the mountain looming in the background. The famous eruption that buried the village in 17ft of ash took place in 79 AD. It happened in the morning, when most were still asleep. The last time it erupted was 1944, but it was fairly minor - it is still active today, and they feel the next eruption will likely be as deadly as the first.

Seeing the plaster casts of the villagers was really sad - to see that it hit so fast they literally were killed and then preserved in the exact state they were in. It was an amazing visit.

After, we headed to a local winery/vineyard for a tour, tasting and lunch. It was located in the national park and was even closer to the mountain. Great view and great experience!

      Pompeii

      May 18, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Today we set off by Metro using our Campania cards, which gave us free travel and museum entry in the Naples area. We took the train headed toward Sorrento, as instructed, but unfortunately we got on the wrong line. Along with two other sets of tourists, a father and son and a couple, we decided to all get off together, at what we then found was a largely abandon station! Anyway, the correct train eventually arrived, and we arrived at the correct station, and headed to Scavi Vesuvi - the ruins of Pompeii.

Pompeii was quite a large city, with a big amphitheatre and 25 brothels! There are many taverns, bakeries and temples surrounding the forum and the basilica.

It must have been a very malodorous city, with the inset cobbled roads with ruts of cartwheels intact (see photo) , and raised stepping stones intermittently to protect the feet from the sewage that must have flowed in the streets!

The casts of the bodies found were eerie, but very interesting. We spent several hours here, along with many many other tourists (it was a very busy Saturday), then headed towards our next stop, Herculaneum.
