      Varenna: Tramonto sulle sponde 🌅🍻🍕

      December 2, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Lake Como Day 2 Varenna part 2

      June 11, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

On return from Varenna and some lovely lunch some nice slushies to cool down it was time for another chapel. Small one in the village centre before getting the boat back to Bellano. A chilled and relaxing evening next to the lake as the clouds started to form for a night of thunder and lightening as we slept. We felt relaxed now on our holiday as we chatted about the highlights and what was still to come.Read more

      Lago di Como Pt. 2

      February 19 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

      Sunday Crowds at Varenna

      September 2, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We are staying at the north end of lake side Varenna. Thankfully. The late Summer crowds are big. Lake actually looks very enticing for a swim. Once you have launched yourself from some very ordinary “beach”… Ha!Read more

      Afternoon Tea

      September 4, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Lovely day visiting Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo and then Bellagio by ferry across The Lake. They are packed with tourists even though it’s Monday - no let up from the weekend. Seeing millions and millions of photos being taken just today - here’s my one photo for this post. Challenge is up. Please someone locate retail purchase of these biscuits in Melbourne? They are a very more-ish bite with a cup of tea, that’s for sure :-)Read more

Day trip to Bellagio and Varenna

      June 27, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 36 °C

Today we took the ferry on Lake Como to Bellagio and then on to Varenna. The forecast temperature for today was 38 deg with a ‘feels like’ temp of 43, so we decided to stay by the water for the entire day, enjoying a swim in a couple of different locations. We survived the heat pretty well but it was incredibly hot and humid away from the cool waters of the lake.Read more

      Day 4 Varenna

      November 16, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Varenna is an hour's journey by train from Milan through picturesque countryside. It is a quaint little town on Lake Como.
We were met by the warmest Nona called Tosca at Tosca b&b then had a romantic lunch alfresco at the Varenna Cafe. The scenery is breathtaking.
We then hiked up to the Castello to work off the lunch.

      Musings on Milan

Many have commented, even criticised Milan for being plain, drab or even dull. Although seen to be the glamour capital of Italy, the actual city has often paled to Florence, Venice and Rome.

When we arrived in Milan, our first stop in Italy, we were wary from the warnings of a dirty, boring, plain, drab city where people are arrogant and discourteous. What we experienced was the exact opposite. There was an abundance of graffiti, but the paths were clean. Despite the many dogs, there was a delightful lack of their poops. The buildings around Sant Ambrogio where our accommodation had plain facades, but many hid beautiful gardens, like 7 Via Cappuccio. The churches may seem non descript and boring on the exterior, but hid frescoes and art that would stand proud in any major gallery. The guide from our walking tour told us that Milan is a great example of never judging a book by it's cover. To see Milan, one needs curiosity to peer behind the drab walls, have the imagination to picture the treasurers behind a heavily graffitied building, and smile at the people around.

The people of Milan are gracious and kind and warm. The waiters happily indulge our questions and translate the menu, the doorman happily led us into a private garden and left us to enjoy it for as long as we wanted. People waited by patiently whilst I took a photo before continuing on their journey, and noone growled at me for bumping into them when not keeping right, or just walking and looking at everything else but where I'm going. For all their indulgence of an awestruck and clumsy traveller, for all their hidden beauty and treasures, and for the wondrous Duomo that drips upside down, we say that Milan is marvelous. Thank you Marvelous Milan.

      Varenna

      September 8, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

      Jaw Dropper in Varenna Italy

      September 1, 2022 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 63 °F

What? Mountains and lakes combo?! Only in Italy. Tricia has just crossed 100x zone for saying wow! The drive from Verona to Lake Como was like any other major hwy. Not until last 15 minutes could we get a good view of Lake Como...even then not the best. Then after at least three wrong turns...we made it. At one point, there literally was three different exits for Bergamo, Italy on a roundabout and Google maps was lagging, we, of course guessed wrong! Once we arrived, our locally raised Airbnb host, petite Alessandra, greeted us w efficiency of a German and panache of an Italian. Follow me, log in here, go there to park..boom...boom like machine gun. When her husband called. Her first words were Pronto, pronto w questions regarding the two week old gelato shop they just opened called Bon Bon.

Our first task, was laundry. lol. I scored some Peroni and a fruiti bianco wine and we settled in. Then pizza for each of us the size of a car tire and we are done. Big rain came and the town deserted w everyone scurrying to a dry locale. We really can't believe we are here?!! Day two will bring a visit to the villa where the James Bond film Casino Royale had a scene sequence, then a visit to Bellagio and dinner by the water front. ;) Ciao!

      Go Gophers!

Added a photo from Verona. Our house/hotel was located just across the bridge on bottom of photo.
