    On G72 Quannan Highway from Yangshuo to Nanning, we stopped at Xinxing Service Station for a bio-break and a quick stretch. It was spotlessly clean and well-maintained, offering large washrooms, driver rest areas, laundry facilities, restaurants, and shops. There, I spotted a cute, fluffy little puppy so eager to play—absolutely adorable.

    The Yulong River is the longest tributary of the Li River in Yangshuo. It is 15.36 kilometers long, 38 to 61 meters wide, and 0.5 to 2 meters deep. The river retains its original natural scenery, with 28 weirs along the course. On both banks stand ancient bridges from the Ming and Qing dynasties and the ruins of Guiyi County. Experts have recognized it as a world-class natural heritage. The scenic area has no modern buildings or artificial carvings, presenting the pastoral landscape of karst landforms. The main way to explore is by bamboo rafting.
    We arrived at Jima Wharf hoping to do the bamboo rafting, only to find out there’s an age limit – and we didn’t qualify. No helping it, so we rented an electric sidecar for a joyride. Honestly, it turned out to be really cool and lots of fun.

    We stayed three nights at the Guilin Exhibition International Boutique Hotel and explored nearby attractions like Xiangbishan (Elephant Trunk Hill) and the Two Lakes & Four Rivers waterway. The hotel’s rooftop infinity pool offers a stunning view of Xiangbishan itself. Even better, the stay includes a poolside photography service—a wonderful bonus.
    Photographer Xixi was very experienced, and very patient. She talked us into the mood and captured warm moments.

    According to meteorological records, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM on June 20, 2026, Xiaoqikong Town in Libo County received 314.5 mm of rainfall in just 6 hours.
    Based on the latest official information, the G243 section near Xiaoqikong (Xiaoqikong Town, Libo County) is currently under traffic control due to a landslide. The resumption time is pending as of June 21, 2026.
    Our plan has been updated accordingly. For safety reasons we are going to Guilin instead.

    Xijiang Thousand Miao Stockaded Village 西江千户苗寨

    Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is the largest Miao settlement in China, and the largest in the world as well.

    The village is not a single hamlet, but a cluster of over a dozen natural villages connected together. In total, there are more than 1,400 households, home to over 6,000 Miao people.

    The village sits on the riverbank slopes at the foot of Leigong Mountain, with the Baishui River flowing right through the middle. The houses are all wooden stilted buildings, stacked layer upon layer from the foot of the mountain all the way up to the summit. When the lights come on at night, the entire village appears quiet and tranquil, with a touch of mystery.

    The Miao people living here are descendants of Chiyou, a legendary tribal leader in ancient China. Their ancestors moved many times over the centuries before finally settling down in this place.

    西江千户苗寨是中国最大也是全世界最大的的苗族寨子。这个寨子不是单独一个村，是十几个自然村连在一起形成的。一共有一千四百多户人家，住了六千多个苗族人。
    寨子建在雷公山下面的河边坡地上，有条白水河从中间穿过去。房子都是木头盖的吊脚楼，从山脚一直盖到山顶，一层一层的。晚上灯亮起来，整个寨子看着很安静，颇有点神秘感。
    住在这里的苗族人是蚩尤的后代。他们的老祖先搬了很多次家，最后才在这儿定下来。

    Qingyan Braised Pig Trotters, also known as "Number One Scholar's Trotters," is a famous Guizhou dish made primarily from pig trotters. Its name originates from the late Qing Dynasty, when Zhao Yijiong, a native of Qingyan, often ate braised pig trotters at the night market on North Gate Street in Qingyan while preparing for the imperial examinations in Beijing. After he became the first number one scholar from the Yunnan-Guizhou region in the 12th year of the Guangxu reign (1886), the locals combined the braised trotters with the culture of the "number one scholar," turning it into a cultural symbol commemorating Zhao Yijiong. The dish uses plump pig trotters, slow-cooked over low heat with aged marinade and over ten types of spices. The finished trotters have a red skin and moist, tender meat, soft and chewy. They are typically eaten with a dipping sauce made from crushed chili peppers, double-flower vinegar, ginger, and scallions, traditionally enjoyed by hand.

It is one of the largest and most historically significant Buddhist temples in Yunnan Province. The temple was rebuilt on the original site of the ancient Dai royal temple, "Jingpiao Buddhist Temple," which was first established during the Ming Dynasty, giving it profound historical and cultural value.
    The temple enshrines a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, standing over 49 meters tall, making it one of the largest Buddha statues in Yunnan Province. The temple also features the Four Nations Hall (Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Laos), which commemorates the spread of Theravada Buddhism.

At a rest stop, I saw a wall painting of Naxi script and found it very interesting. In contrast, the writing systems of Native Americans can mostly only be seen in museums today.

It's only a five-minute walk from here to the centre of ancient town, truly making it an ideal place to stay when visiting Xizhou.

    Along the 300+ km highway G5621 from Kunming to Dali, the road is high-quality and smooth, passing through 35 tunnels – very impressive. Service stations are spacious, and rest stops are located about every 20–30 km. Inside the stations, the washrooms are very clean and well-maintained, and the restaurants serve local food either from a food court or as a buffet – both equally delicious. A buffet of 14 dishes, plus rice and soup, costs ¥35 ($7 CAD).

    Landing at KMG was smooth, pre-booked transportation was already waiting for us.
    After checking into the hotel, we were greeted by Bao Ge and his wife — friends we had made during a trip to Antarctica. They are natives of Kunming and had planned a guided tour for us of the city’s historical areas.
    Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province, located in the central part of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau at an elevation of about 1,900 meters. Known as the "City of Eternal Spring," it enjoys a mild, pleasant climate year-round. The city covers approximately 21,000 square kilometers and has a population of around 8.6 million.
    As one of China's first historically and culturally renowned cities, Kunming boasts a rich heritage, including the ancient Dian culture and the famed Southwest Associated University from the WWII era. It is home to 25 ethnic groups, such as the Yi and Hui, living alongside the Han majority, creating a vibrant cultural tapestry.
    Bao Ge and his wife led us to visit Green Lake Park, the former site of the National Southwest Associated University, the former site of Yunnan Military Academy, the Victory Memorial Hall, and Huanggong East Street. We sipped rose tea while listening to Bao Ge tell the stories of Pu’er tea. Then, at Fuzhaolou — a restaurant themed around the National Southwest Associated University — we enjoyed famous Yunnan dishes such as steam pot chicken, porcini mushrooms, erkuai (rice cakes), and other delicacies.

    Arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, 30 minutes early, which is really good. It’s a bit foggy when the plane getting closer to the airport. The airport is very large in size, very clean, with a lots of shops, services, and restaurants.
