    Landing at KMG was smooth, pre-booked transportation was already waiting for us.
    After checking into the hotel, we were greeted by Bao Ge and his wife — friends we had made during a trip to Antarctica. They are natives of Kunming and had planned a guided tour for us of the city’s historical areas.
    Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province, located in the central part of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau at an elevation of about 1,900 meters. Known as the "City of Eternal Spring," it enjoys a mild, pleasant climate year-round. The city covers approximately 21,000 square kilometers and has a population of around 8.6 million.
    As one of China's first historically and culturally renowned cities, Kunming boasts a rich heritage, including the ancient Dian culture and the famed Southwest Associated University from the WWII era. It is home to 25 ethnic groups, such as the Yi and Hui, living alongside the Han majority, creating a vibrant cultural tapestry.
    Bao Ge and his wife led us to visit Green Lake Park, the former site of the National Southwest Associated University, the former site of Yunnan Military Academy, the Victory Memorial Hall, and Huanggong East Street. We sipped rose tea while listening to Bao Ge tell the stories of Pu’er tea. Then, at Fuzhaolou — a restaurant themed around the National Southwest Associated University — we enjoyed famous Yunnan dishes such as steam pot chicken, porcini mushrooms, erkuai (rice cakes), and other delicacies.

    Along the 300+ km highway G5621 from Kunming to Dali, the road is high-quality and smooth, passing through 35 tunnels – very impressive. Service stations are spacious, and rest stops are located about every 20–30 km. Inside the stations, the washrooms are very clean and well-maintained, and the restaurants serve local food either from a food court or as a buffet – both equally delicious. A buffet of 14 dishes, plus rice and soup, costs ¥35 ($7 CAD).

Although it's a homestay, it is fully equipped with amenities, making guests feel relaxed and delighted. It's only a five-minute walk from here to the centre of ancient town, truly making it an ideal place to stay when visiting Xizhou.

    Yulong Snow Mountain is the southernmost year-round snow mountain in the Northern Hemisphere and is regarded as a sacred peak by the Naxi people. Three cable car lines serve the Glacier Park (at 4,680 m), the alpine meadow of Maoniuping (3,800 m), and Yunshanping (3,200 m).
    On that day, the rain was quite heavy, so we took the cable car to Yunshanping. The view was still beautiful.
    After descending, we continued to visit Blue Moon Valley, known as the "sapphire of the snow mountain." Located at the eastern foothills of Yulong Snow Mountain, the valley gets its name because on clear days the lake water would appear brilliant blue and the valley is crescent‑shaped. Its former name was Baishui River, named for its white riverbed. The water comes from the meltwater of the ancient glaciers on Yulong Snow Mountain. Containing copper ions, it will display a captivating blue color under sunlight. Blocked by the mountain terrain, the water forms four main lakes, which from top to bottom are Yuye Lake, Jingtan Lake, Lanyue Lake, and Tingtao Lake. After he became the first number one scholar from the Yunnan-Guizhou region in the 12th year of the Guangxu reign (1886), the locals combined the braised trotters with the culture of the "number one scholar," turning it into a cultural symbol commemorating Zhao Yijiong. The dish uses plump pig trotters, slow-cooked over low heat with aged marinade and over ten types of spices. The finished trotters have a red skin and moist, tender meat, soft and chewy. They are typically eaten with a dipping sauce made from crushed chili peppers, double-flower vinegar, ginger, and scallions, traditionally enjoyed by hand.

    Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is the largest Miao settlement in China, and the largest in the world as well.

    The village is not a single hamlet, but a cluster of over a dozen natural villages connected together. In total, there are more than 1,400 households, home to over 6,000 Miao people.

    The village sits on the riverbank slopes at the foot of Leigong Mountain, with the Baishui River flowing right through the middle. The houses are all wooden stilted buildings, stacked layer upon layer from the foot of the mountain all the way up to the summit. When the lights come on at night, the entire village appears quiet and tranquil, with a touch of mystery.

    The Miao people living here are descendants of Chiyou, a legendary tribal leader in ancient China. Their ancestors moved many times over the centuries before finally settling down in this place.

    寨子建在雷公山下面的河边坡地上，有条白水河从中间穿过去。房子都是木头盖的吊脚楼，从山脚一直盖到山顶，一层一层的。晚上灯亮起来，整个寨子看着很安静，颇有点神秘感。
    住在这里的苗族人是蚩尤的后代。他们的老祖先搬了很多次家，最后才在这儿定下来。
    有说："以美丽回答一切，看西江知天下苗寨"。
