      An abundance of Nature on Amami Oshima

      I have spent the last two days on Amami Oshima - one of the southern Japanese islands 🏝️ located between the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
      Two days ago, the ferry has brought me and Anna-Maria at 4.30 am to the port of Naze. That’s basically the main city with approximately 10.000 inhabitants on Anami-Oshima. There was no possibility to store our luggage at the harbour or before 9 am in the hostel. So, the idea was to bring all our belongings 🧳 to the mangrove forest, store it there and participate in the 10 am kayak tour 🛶 through the mangrove forest 🌳 It was still very early. So, we had to wait nearly 2 hours before we could take the first bus to our destination. I believe we were lucky in multiple ways: on one hand we had an English speaking guide - probably because Anna-Maria had been writing the company (that organised the tour) upfront. Moreover, the time slot we picked was sunny ☀️ and even exposed some blue skies in between. Later, after our tour the weather became more cloudy, windy and it started to rain 🌧️ For a few minutes there was even a real downpour.
      When we returned to Naze we could finally check-in in our hostel and store our luggage in our rooms.
      In the afternoon, we visited a Shochu 🍶distillery. Shochu is a high-percentage alcoholic beverage. It is typical for Kyushu and the southern islands of Japan. On the Amami islands, brown sugar 🎋 is used as a special ingredient for Shochu whereas other regions use sweet potato 🍠 , barley 🌾 or just rice 🌿 The difference to Sake is that it is much more potent (approximately 30% alcohol instead of only around 15%) since it is distilled after its fermentation. The owner of the distillery who showed us around put a lot of effort in explaining the production process in detail to us. After we have finished our tasting, his wife also joined us with their newborn 👶 for a brief chat. They seemed to be very happy to have us as their guests in their distillery and recommended the close-by Japanese restaurant „Kitahachi“ for dinner that serves local food 🍲 from the Amami islands. That evening we were not able to go there since the place was already completely booked out but we made a reservation 🎟️ for the next day. Instead, the owner of the restaurant „Kitahachi“ sent us to another restaurant across the street which served also very good local food. 🍱 It didn’t take long after we sat down at the bar before our neighbour started a conversation with us. It was really striking. Here on the Amani islands the Japanese seemed to be so much more open than on the „main land“. 💬

      The next morning, we went to Akiyaba Tategami - a huge rock 🪨 in front of the crystal clear and blue coast of Amami Oshima. I read the day before in the „Amami Oshima World Heritage Conservation Center“ near the mangrove forest 🌳 that this rock is associated with the gods by the indigenous people. It is truly an impressive sight.
      From there, we started our ascent to the top of the mountain ⛰️ that houses the „Amami Nature Observation Forest“ - knowing that at its peak, some beautiful views would await us. Then we walked down to the city „Tatsugō“ on other side of the mountain to catch the bus 🚎 and drive back towards Naze. We both got already off the bus at „Nazeasahicho“ but spent our afternoons separately: Anna-Maria wanted to relax in a cafe ☕️ and read her book and I wanted to see a little more of Amami Oshima. So, I walked 1 hour along the coast until I arrived at our hostel in Naze.
      In the evening we met again for dinner at „Kitahachi“ (the restaurant we made a reservation the day before). The 6-course menu 🍽️ with local dishes was excellent. One or two glasses of Shochu highball complimented it perfectly. Also here the Japanese were quick to chat 💬 with us - they were from all over the country (Yokohama, Hakata, Osaka, Nikka, …). Some were in Amami-Oshima for work; others for leisure. It was a fun evening.       Landing on Yakushima

      The day began much too early, I still managed to squeeze in a delicious breakfast and afterwards, a taxi brought me to the ferry port with more than enough time to spare. So fully packed I entered the terminal to find the ticket counter closed... with a sign that the ferry was cancelled for today. Well... I don't know if the weather would have really been a problem or if it was just a good excuse to not have to run the service (I guess in low season on some days you barely make any profit , but you have to supply the service to keep your license...) Well ... can't be helped, guess I was lucky I could not buy the ticket the day before. There was no way around it, I had to pay double the price to take the Jet foil Speed boat. Too bad, I was looking forward, to the time on board of the ferry, the Jet foil felt a little like an Airplane where you were told to keep the belt on. I would have preferred to walk around the car ferry. It was a pretty rainy day and by pure luck I was able to take the next outgoing Jet Foil in the last minute. I arrived much earlier on Yakushima than anticipated, but the owners of the Minshuku I would stay in for the next 5 nights were kind enough to let me in earlier. I like the room, it has everything I need and is just next to the shared bathroom and toilet. It is also super cheap, only 22€ per night. At least that helps mitigating the extra cost from the Jet Foil (145€ Return) and the 163€ I will have to pay for renting a car for 4 days. After I moved in and spread my stuff in the room, I went out again to a supermarket where I shopped a little, on the way back I also visited a gift store, they had lots of local crafts, but the prices were quite steep, they had many woodcrafts, some items were very expensive, but the wood was super lightweight and smelled nice, they also sold fragrant wood chips. The wooden items are so expensive because the felling of the trees called Yakusugi is strictly prohibited and only the wood from trees that fall naturally can be used for the woodcrafts. So the supply is very limited... Yakusugi are ancient Japanese Cryptomeria, they are a unique kind of cypress trees called Sugi, and the ones from YAKUshima can grow incredibly old and some of the trees on the island are thousands of years old. Mir gefällt das Zimmer, es hat alles, was ich brauche und liegt direkt neben dem Gemeinschaftsbad und der Toilette. Es ist auch supergünstig, nur 22€ pro Nacht. Zumindest hilft das dabei, die zusätzlichen Kosten für das Jet-Foil (145 € Hin- und Rückfahrt) und die 163 €, die ich für die Anmietung eines Autos für 4 Tage bezahlen muss, zu mildern. Nachdem ich eingezogen war und meine Sachen im Zimmer verteilt hatte, ging ich noch einmal in einen Supermarkt, wo ich ein wenig einkaufte. Auf dem Rückweg besuchte ich auch einen Geschenkeladen. Dort gab es viele lokale Kunsthandwerke, aber die Preise waren ziemlich hoch. Sie hatten viele Holzarbeiten, einige waren sehr teuer, aber das Holz war superleicht und roch gut, es wurden auch duftende Holzspäne verkauft. Die Holzgegenstände sind so teuer, weil das Fällen der Yakusugi-Bäume strengstens verboten ist und nur das Holz von Bäumen, die auf natürliche Weise fallen, für die Holzarbeiten verwendet werden darf.       Da es den ganzen Tag mit kleinen Unterbrechungen in Strömen regnete, war das Einzige, was ich noch schaffen konnte die Suzuki-Autovermietung zu besuchen, um mir ein Auto zu reservieren, das ich morgen abholen werde.       Yakushima Roadtrip

      I picked up my rental car around 11:00, the procedure was quick and easy thanks to my preparation (an official drivers license translation to japanese was required) after the few moments my brain needed to adapt to driving with automatic transmission and on the left side of the road, I enjoyed driving quite a lot, safe from the rain and wind I drove south at a maximum allowed speed between 40 and 50km/h... I loved it, Normally the road goes in a circle around the island, so my aim was to circle around and see what I could randomly find on the roadside, I found two waterfalls and an undersea hotspring at the ocean, I saw weird jumping amphibian fish, yaku monkeys, some shy deer, many rainbows and impossibly green and dense views on the forest.       Shiratani Unsui Ravine

      Main Focus of the day was a visit of Shiratani Unsuikyo, a ravine situated near Miyanoura, surrounded by a dense and lush Cedar forest. The road up to the entrance was sometimes very narrow and is currently closed at night, because they are actually doing the repairs at night, in order to not disturb day traffic. Only in Japan. There were several paths of varying difficulties, I chose to walk the medium upper circle and the easy leisurely circle on the way back. I had slept a little too long and left in a bit of a hurry, so I forgot my actioncam, something to eat and my down jacket, that would have helped fighting the cold. I felt a bit chilly because of the relatively low temperature (around 10 degrees) and high humidity. My rainproof windbreaker failed at keeping me warm. Hopefully I won't get cold again like when I was hiking in the ❄️ In Nagano. The forest was amazing, lush and dense with gigantic cedars, the route I took was not especially difficult, my shoes and legs served me well traversing all the little springs and rocks. While there was no rain, there was no sunshine either, just a grey cloudy sky. But the beautiful lush green forest still managed to brighten up my mood.       Relaxing Rainy Day

      Since it is raining nonstop today, I took my rental car and drove to the north, to try and close the circle around the isle, at least till the point the road is closed because of construction work. The ocean as well as the mountains were clouded with dense fog. It was a bit eery as I seemed to be the only one travelling on the road in the relentless rain. Once I reached the sign for the closed road, I drove back. Before I shut myself in my nice cozy room, I bought supplies for tomorrow in the local supermarket. I found some amazing raincover pants that I can just use above my pants to make my legs waterproof. Good find, might come in handy tomorrow when I head southwards again, I also bought towels, so I am better prepared to try out the seaside onsen tomorrow, weather permitting. If there is less rain and even some dry periods I will hopefully be able to visit Yakusugi Land, the second famous recreational forest area.

      Yakusugi Land

      My plan for today was to drive down to the south again and visit the second recreational forest area called Yakusugi Land, for the late afternoon I also planned to visit the seaside Onsen again to immerse myself into the hot spring water with a view towards the ocean. But first things first, it took me around an hour to drive to the parking lot near the park entrance, 20 minutes just to drive up from the main road to the park. A long winding road with great views that I could not Photograph in the curves. The park itself offered a 30, 80, 150 and 210minute trail, I decided to walk the 210minute trail that brought me up to a different forest, where You could walk even further up the mountain, but I returned from that last mapped location to have enough time for the hot spring. I made some cool new acquaintances, Davis from the States and Yuti from Austria had many nice and super interesting stories to tell, also some elderly japanese gentlemen joined in, it was a really cool experience and it got gradually darker, windier, there was mood lighting from the house near the entrance, it looked cozy and beautiful. Later I drove Davis and Yuti to their accomodations and we shared a few more stories while on the road. It definitely was a night to remember.

      Kagoshima

      Back in Japan, have to pass through immigration again. Windy, dry looks like might brighten up this pm. Taxi to the Sengan-en gardens. Japanese lunch pork Katsu with rice, pickles and salad. Washed down with a cool beer. Mike had warm sake. Impressive gardens over 15 acres, interspersed with tasteful shops. Imposing view of the active Sakurajima volcano…. thankfully not churning out any ash or lava today.Read more

      Ferry to Yakushima

      It is an absolutely awesome pleasure to be on a boat again. It just makes me feel so alive. The wind, the water, the waves, far away horizons. I love it.

      Yakushima appears in a shroud of clouds. There are only just over a hundred sunny days on this island it rains almost all the time if it isn't cloudy. But it has incredible flora and that's why people come here to hike. The volcanic origin of this islands is obvious in the steep slopes and the highest point at just under 2,000 m. Everything is green obviously.

      The tourist information centers are very useful and they're very good with their tourists here.

      All my stuff is moist without even getting wet or any rain. People mull about in the hostel without too much communication, just a little bit of conversation with the Frenchman and the Korean in my room. Maybe it's the rainy weather.

      Big Surprise

      Incredible hike into the center of the island on a well established track. This place is wet and moss is everywhere, some 600 species are on this island. The cedar trees here grow slowly and have tight rings and high resin content so they are resistant to rot and insects. They grow large and old. Jomonsugi is estimated between 2700 and 7000, it's 16m circumference is impressive.Read more

      Rest day Onsen

      April 13 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

      I go to an Onsen after a leisurely wake up and go soak in a sulfur water warm bath right by the ocean. Cool spot.

      In the afternoon I find a deserted beach, volcanic rock and at low tide a nice spot to do an excursion.

      The Israeli guy, Philip and I are discussing how to learn Japanese. I have absolutely no clue with my two words but they have done a few months of study and are a wealth of information on the topic. It's more involved than I realized.      Read more
