Day 1. Leaving to Catforth

Today’s the day we leave for Scotland - finally ! We have loads to do today , starting off with washing Maddy in the utility sink as she has rolled in fox poo the day before - thanks maddy !
Once maddy was washed with her tropical shampoo, we left her to dry and set off to Leigh’s garage . Leigh very kindly lubricated the gears for us as they were starting to feel to bit clunky . James then jet washed the van ( although give it an hour and it would be filthy again).
We borrowed the land rover and went to Ledbury tip to get rid off all our rubbish from the van build . Afterwards , we headed to Aldi and Tesco to get our first three meals for our trip and some essentials ( gin and tonic , obviously ).
Quick drive back up to the garage to load our shopping into the van , to our surprise everything fitted perfectly .
Next , we had to reverse the van down the steep and slippery driveway , it didn’t quite go to plan as James got distracted by me talking and managed to back it too far onto the grass bank . After placing loads of wood slats in front of the tyres , it was obvious that the freshly washed van was properly stuck and filthy again . Fortunately, Leigh was coming down the drive just as this happened . After teasing James true Leigh style , Leigh luckily managed to tow us out .
The next few hours involved packing all our clothes into the van and cleaning out our hobbit house and the garages . We had a lovely lunch in between taking loads to the garage - thanks Jackie !
Once all the lifting and tidying was done , it was time to enjoy our last shower at home ,we were both in there for ages as a daily shower will now be a luxury of the past .
Finally , ready to leave at about 1800. I did the driving tonight , some rain showers on the way but on the whole a very pleasant journey to a little village called catforth, which is near Blackpool .
We had a cheeky beer whilst I cooked supper , a chilli con carne pasta bake , which was very tasty ! We took Maddy out for a little walk and then watched Netflix for a while before going to bed .Читать далее

Day 2. Catforth to Loch Katrina

Today we woke up in Catforth and had some breakfast, we then headed up the long scenic motorway to Gretna Green passing the lakes enroute. We stopped at Gretna green to have a look as may be a "potential" place to get married, we paid to go and have a look around inside and the history of the place was fascinating. After letting Maggie have a run we cooked a full English before carrying on upto Scotland. When in Glasgow we needed to do a fuel and water run, fuel easy, water not so much... But eventually ended up stealing some from a tap we found at Morrisons as we had enough of touring Glasgow 😂. Then we headed upto a great park up next to a stream and Loch called Loch Katrine, we had a lovely gusto meal (cheers mum) and took Maddy on a walk around the local woods in the dark. She is loving van life and loves her new robes for wearing inside, she's a little confused with us constantly cleaning her but needs must when she gets into the van. Van life so far is great, we had a flannel wash before bed which worked a treat. Van and everything is working well so happy days.Читать далее

Day 3. Loch Katrina to Glencoe

This morning we woke to blue skies and autumn colours, such a beautiful time of year to be up here. We stopped at another loch for services and saw some crazy people swimming 🥶🥶. We have a very scenic drive this afternoon, weaving between the mountains to our next park up in Glencoe. It's so nice cruising along at 40mph without a care in the world and having everything we need on board makes it even better.
We managed to find a park up 12 miles off the main road, the road to the park up was very narrow and quite bumpy, but the scenery was amazing. The look of concentration on Grace's face was comical, but we got there in one peice, only hitting one pothole on the way.
After about 40 mins on the single track road, we had made it to our new park up for the night, which was right next to Loch Etive in Glencoe. We had managed to get the best parking space before all the other campers drove in for the evening.
We had enough day light left to take Maddy on a nice walk around the side of the Loch, taking our time and skimming stones along the way.
Once the light had gone, we took the opportunity to use our new firepit! We sat outside drinking hot chocolate and warming our hands over the fire for an hour or so, it was lovely.
Once back at the van, we dried Maddy off and put her towel robe on to keep her warm.
We had a couple of beers whilst James cooked a delicious masala curry. After the washing up was done, we sat and chilled for a while before taking Maddy out again for her night time walk.
We had a cuppa in bed and started watching "A Man Called Otto".Читать далее

Day 4. Glencoe to Skye

Today we woke up to another beautiful sunrise ! James took Maddy out for a quick walk at about 730 and I slowly rolled out of bed to make a cuppa .
Once James was back , we made the decision to head on up to the Isle of Skye as we have stayed in Glencoe before .
En route to Isle of Skye , we stopped off at the famous Harry Potter film location in Glencoe , which is where all the scenes with Hagrids hut are filmed . We managed to find the exact spot and take some good photos - sadly we couldn’t find buckbeak.
Next , time to stock up on food , fuel and water before entering the wilderness . We managed to buy our meals for the next 5 days , including some tasty venison burgers (sorry , Bambi). Obviously we bought some more beers too !
After our very expensive food shop , we are now cruising slowly towards our fourth park up in the Isle of Skye . We crossed Skye bridge which was scary as it’s very high and long. Our next park up was about 40 mins deep into Skye. We stopped at a place called Ord which was really secluded and beachfront which was cool. After a walk along the beach with Maddy we cooked some venison burgers and some wedges which were delicious, using the oven more than we thought we would. We had a cosy night in the van and watched a film. Van life is great!!Читать далее

Day 5. Isle of Skye

Today we woke up to strong winds and rain next to the sea front so decided to move on, we are touring the west side of skye today. We decided to visit the famous fairy Pools, this involved abit of a hike from a very expensive car park, as soon as we were booted and ready to go the wind picked up, we braved it anyway and Maddy enjoyed wearing her new rain jacket. We hiked to the pools which were flowing well but not as pretty as they could have been on a sunny day, but it was fun all the same.
After a lovely 1 pan full English breakfast, we headed north west towards our next park up, hopefully another coastal one as we want to see what the vans like in 50mph winds overnight, may be a silly quest but having fun all the same!
We drove for about an hour to our next stop off point. The road was more like a beaten track, with huge potholes everywhere and quite a drop on the left side. After creeping up the track slowly, our phone notified us to say we had reached the park up spot. Unfortunately, it was a boggy feeding area for cows, really not suitable for a camper.
James turned the camper around like a boss and we headed back up the track, to find a tiny little pull in just big enough for a camper. This was our spot for the night!
It was super windy and rainy, but we loved it. It's so relaxing sitting in the warm campervan with a cup of tea listening to the weather outside.
We took Maddy out for a short walk and then cooked a stir fry for supper.
After having a good tidy up, we spent a few hours playing rumicub and uno- with a few beers of course.
We climbed into our comfy bed and started to watch a film on Netflix but we both fell asleep and woke up at 3 due to the sound of the stormy weather outside. A great park up, middle of no where!Читать далее

Day 6. Isle of Skye

Today we woke up to such a view after a very blustery night, we carried on heading our way around the island firstly stopping at Neist Lighthouse, we didn't realise it was a good walk from the car park and the weather was rolling in so decided to carry on. We took a road over the top of a mountain which was super exciting and went past cows and sheep blocking the road. Next stop was a place called fairy Glen, upon arrival you could so tell why it was called Fairy Glen, as it looked like something out of the Hobbit. Rolling pointy small hills and big rock formations, we explored here for an hour or 2 and we all made it to the top of the tall formation (including old smaggie bless her).
After exploring we needed to find a campsite to do the toilet and restock on water, we found one close and got Electric hook up for the night to restock battery's. £28 for us all for the night, but was worth it for the shower and emptying the tanks. It was very blustery again and we staying beachfront at a place called Uig which was a busy harbour. We explored here and the beach and came across a big spotted ray dead on the shore, it was huge.
We then went and cooked a Thai curry which was delicious and the van doesn't smell of curry after which is a plus, the ventilation is working well. We looked at our next move onwards and played rummikub. Getting used to van life now and loving it. We started a new series in bed on BBC1 called boat story and then went to bed.Читать далее

Day 7. Isle of Skye and Quiraing

After a good nights sleep we quickly restocked the tanks and had some breakfast then headed for the north coastal road. We got around the head of Skye and arrived at the Quiraing, the UKs largest landslip mountainous area which has created the most scenic mountains.
We parked the van and headed off along the path crossing waterfalls following the path, which was getting better with every step. Maddy loved every second, crossing sketchy bits with ease, we were calling her a mountain goat, she's definitely got it in her still despite being 13 in 10 days, 2 people think she's a puppy today 😂🐶. We walked to the end of the trial and saw a small path heading straight up the side of the rock stacks. When we eventually got to the top we were just under the top of the mountain, looking down at the formations of rock. It was beautifully peaceful and started to snow a little at the top, we sat here and enjoyed a rest... We then we realised it was up and down the same way, no circuit this way 😂😬. Downhill took ages as it was super steep and slippy, thank God the weather was nice today, Maddy was good as gold on the lead, we both had a little slip over on the way down, but all good 😂. It was super fun to get walking again finally.
We then headed to Kilt Rock which was pretty, then onto Lealt Falls which was also really cool. We have found a lovely little park up on the side of the coast, with about 6 lighthouses in our view . We have crossed off the map where we have been and read up and ready to head to Applecross tomorrow, hopefully crossing Bealach na Ba, Scotlands 3rd highest mountain pass😬. Super excited as weather is looking good for next few days. Cosy night in the van, pasta bake and games tonight.Читать далее

Part 1

After a lovely nights sleep at quite possibly our best park up yet, we were woken to the most glorious sunrise, the sun slowly coming up over Bealach Na Ba, Island of Raasay and Rona. The view was absolutely stunning! Cold but very scenic. We had some breakfast and set tracks as today we were walking upto Old Man of Storr another famous mountainous landmark of Isle of Skye. We parked up and started the 700 mtr climb upto the view point. Weaving in and out of the huge stacks of rock, also like yesterday from a landslide 6000 years ago. The view on the way up was so pretty but very cold, we struggled to regulate temperature whilst walking up. When we got to the top we were looking down on the rock formations and the lovely sun made a special scene. Maddy was yet again called a puppy twice and people were shocked when we told them she was 13 and she jumped up the hill like a spring chicken. After a walk back to the car we were heading onto Applecross via Bealach Na Ba.Читать далее

We had a super scenic drive to our next stop, passing all the lochs and snowy mountains on the way, the reflections of all the colours against the crystal clear loch waters was beautiful. We refilled water, fuel and food as we are off grid the next day or so. We then got onto the start of the NC500 - mad to think we have been gone 8 days and only just starting the route. First stop is an extra from the main route and to stop at Applecross is one of the remotest settlements in mainland Scotland. We headed over Bealach Na Ba a 650mtr high mountain crossing with about 12 hairpins, dad is going to freak😂. We went for the crossing and got up fine, coming down though, Lennys brakes didn't like us much and they started to overheat a little, we stopped and let them cool down before carrying on. When cold, we headed down the mountain to Applecross. I had been told on a cruise by a Jordie chap that we must try the seafood pub when we get here, sadly this shut the for season. So we carried on along the peninsula and found an awesome park up by a small lake. On the way to be parking Grace had an Aurora alert for this evening. We were checking outside constantly and there it was!! A rather faint but clearly different lights changing. Finally we had seen the Nothern Lights! Wow!! They were really pretty and we took some cool pictures on my phone. We had to go in as it was so cold tonight re feel of -3 in the wind. Grace cooked a lovely Pealla to warm us up and got ready for a cosy night. What a great day!Читать далее

Day 9. Applecross to Torrindon

Today we set off after a slow morning. We headed up and around the bay past Loch Torrindon, we wanted to have some lunch so headed to Sheildig & Torrindon but unfortunately they were all closed. Instead, we stopped and watched the Loch for a while and took advantage of the fact we had signal for once.
Afterwards , we drove down to Lower Diabiag looking for a park up for the day/night, it was super pretty but after 2 hours of searching we decided to carry on along the road of the NC500. We eventually found a awesome place next to the mountain range and Ben Eighe. We took Maddy for a walk up abit of the mountain. Feels very cold so both looking forward to getting the van nice and cosy.Читать далее

Day 10. Torrindon to Loch Maree

Today when we woke up and opened the blinds we saw a stag standing just outside. He's a local celebrity named Callum and very friendly, he came straight over to the van and even put his nose out to touch James. Afterwards, we headed to a local campervan point to restock all tanks and then onto Ben Eighe nature reserve. We had read about a must do mountain walk, it was 4 miles long and climbed upto a point half way up Ben Eighe, it was quite an adventure but a really well laid out path. We sat up the top for ten minutes before the long, slow and icy descent. Very good walk, definitely got the heart pumping.
We drove down the Loch and decided to stop for the night after finding a cosy spot next to the Loch, great find! Cosy night in the van deserved after today's effort 😂🥶Читать далее

Day 11. Loch Maree to Badrallach

Today we woke to a lovely morning, after a cold night in the best pitch. We had some breakfast and headed off upto Badrallach, en route we stopped along the way, a Nato submarine base at Loch Ewe which was cool. We then headed north to a funny sounding place called Melon Uldridge where we played on the beach with Maddy and had a kick about with a football. After a while we headed back to the van for some lunch, we realised then that we had little water so then slowly headed off on a scenic drive to Badrallach where there is a year open campsite at the end of a 20min drive around the Loch. When we arrived it was all loched* 😂 up but after a making contact with the owner, he gave us the code and told us how to turn all the electic on. We took Maddy on a short walk and had a great shower before hunkering down for the night.Читать далее

Day 12. Badrallach to Stac Polladiah

The following morning we realised that we didn't refill our tank before heading down the field, we knew this would go one of 2 ways with the grass and mud, either will be successful or we won't be able to go back onto the grass. The gravel track wasn't wide enough for the van, so it was quite slippery trying to go uphill for water, and even worse once the tank was full. The owner of the campsite then came down to meet us, which was slightly embarrassing with a semi stuck van!
The owner suggested we parked up at an area half gravel half grass, James managed to turn the van around and back it into the space. Our electic hookup wouldn't reach that far and we both noticed a strange smell.... I went to have a look around and discovered we were about 5 metres in front of the sess pit.
After all that effort, we concluded that we weren't prepared to pay for another night here as we can camp for free without smells 😂.
After packing everything back into the van, we headed off to Ullapool to restock on food, fuel and gas- which we managed very easily with no hastles.
We continued north and ended up at a car park at the bottom of Stac Pollaidh. The car park was big and flat, but next to quite a busy road.
We explored the area with Maddy, then had a Thai green curry for supper, before playing rumikub and listening to some old tunes from back in the day with some beers. Was a lovely night!Читать далее

Day 13. Stac Palladiah to Kylesku

Today was a beautiful morning, we were going to walk to the top of Stac Palladiah but decided to carry on along the NC500 as we woke up later than planned. We followed probably the most scenic back road yet viewing the Summer Isles and surrounding islands, following the sea all the way to Lochinver. We think we saw 2 seals, only problem with the road was the length we are.. The road was for max 8 mtrs and we are 6 so when we met people it was a nightmare especially when we passed another ambulance same size as us😬 after safely navigating we got to Lochinver. We were both desperate to have fish and chips so stopped at one of the first cafes we have found the whole time up in Scotland still open and had some. The recommendations said they were amazing and they certainly were.
We enjoyed this and then restocked tanks before taking Maddy on a riverside walk, the falls were raging so it was super cool to see. Upon returning we headed along the road to a castle ruins and walked as close as we could get. Afterwards we headed down the road and turned off towards Drummeg, we found a lovely park up with great views. Tonight is going to be a cold one so got the van toasty ready for a cold night, the van stays at 19 degrees easily throughout the night so we hardly notice inside. We had a lovely spaghetti bolognese and watched 007 show on amazon , mum you must watch it, it's so good! Heading into the Lonely Lands tomorrow onwards, where they have the lowest population in the whole of the UK and basically nothing about... But we can't wait to get even more wild.. 😁Читать далее

Day 14. Kylesku to Durness

The weather was amazing this morning, glorious sunshine but very cold. The road was glistening with the ice.
The roads seem much more narrow up here, with literally no room for error, even trickier with the ice. We succesfully managed to drive down to the main road and start our journey to Durness.
Our first little stop off was at Old Blairmore beach, once again the whole beach to ourselves. Maddy had a run around and managed to find a dead seal washed up, which was really sad. We stayed on the beach for a good while, playing football and throwing maddy's ball.
After walking back to the van, we had a quick bacon sarnie and carried on our journey - next stop Smoo Cave! Smoo Cave has the biggest entrance of any sea cave in the UK. Allt smoo plunges 25 metres down a sink hole into an inner cave.
Smoo Cave was a great little visit, there was a launderette just up the road from the car park, so we put a wash on whilst we had a look around smoo Cave. The waterfall in the cave was so powerfull and loud and the cave was lit up with pretty lights.
Finally our washing was done, we sat in the van and had a tidy up whilst the washing was drying and planned where to stay for the night.
Luckily, there were loads of places to park up, we had a choice of three close to eachother and decided to stay at the spot most northern facing to see the northern lights.
We weren't disappointed at all, lots of activity that you could just about see by eye, but really vivid through a camera. We stood outside in the freezing cold taking loads of photos, I had to keep retreating to the van as my hands felt like they were going to fall off, fair play James for staying out so long!
We warmed up inside and had some more venison for supper, it's so good! We then opened our Colin the Caterpillar advent calender, cheers mum and decorated the van with Tinsell.
Afterwards, we played rumikub and watched some Netflix and headed to bed.Читать далее

Day 15. Durness to Skerray

Another beautiful but frosty start this morning , with sheep bleating outside our window !
After a quick cup of tea and a freshen up , we headed toward Skerray , only about an hours drive away .
The drive was super scenic , with snowy hills next to us and frozen lochs dotted around. We stopped off along the way when we had signal to do some research , we also took Maddy on a little walk as the area was so pretty .
We continued to a little park up at Skerray harbour . The little twisty roads were really starting to get icy , but all was good and we got there safely .
There was a tap with drinking water there , so James thought we should empty our drinking water tank and get fresh water . Not surprisingly , the drinking water tap was completely frozen . Not to worry , as we still had about 3 litres in bottles , phew !
Braving the cold , we walked down to the harbour with Maddy , sliding all the way down the ice on the road . We didn’t stay for long before heading back to the warm van .
We had an early supper tonight , pork and Mediterranean veg tray bake , it took ages to cook. Luckily we were distracted by the northern lights outside.
After a few rounds of rumikub and some reading , we made some tea and headed to bed . Temperatures cold tonight , but Van stayed toastie.Читать далее

Day 16. Skerray to John O' Groats

Today we woke up to our coldest night yet - 7, not surprising as we are not far from the place where the lowest ever temp has been recorded in the UK. Mad to think weather has been this cold at home. All the tanks frooze overnight , luckily we carry water on board and got a heater we can use to defrost the tank when driving. It was - 3 when we left around lunchtime after giving Maddy a very quick run, luckily the Scottish are set up for winter and all the roads were gritted and safe with only a couple of patches of black ice. We headed along the top coast and although still pleasant scenary, definitely not as nice as the previous few days. So we decided to drive all the way to John o Groats as it was too cold to do anything today also. Along the way we saw some crazy blokes heading out with surfboards. We also stopped at a Nuclear power station to have a quick look from a viewpoint, not to exciting 😂. You can go for a walk along the beach but apparently it's radioactive so we gave that a miss... We stopped at Thurso to restock food and fuel and found a Lidl... So we went abit mad and struggled to fit all the food into the van😂. We stopped at Castle Of Mey, which was the Queens mothers house which was beautiful but sadly closed. We then drove onto John o Groats campsite as tonight is the night for our every 5 day shower.. We do however stay very clean with flannels washes everyday. This is quite a posh campsite but right next to the John o Groats sign.. Its expensive at £32.50 but looking forward to a good shower and plugging in for the night to restock batteries 🤓🤓.Читать далее

Day 17. John O' Groats to Helmesdale

We woke up and took full advantage of the amazing showers at this campsite, feels like being in a warm pressure washer 😂. Afterwards we headed to the famous sign to take the obvious John o Groats pictures, we also headed upto the Duncansby head lighthouse to go and have a look at the Duncansby Stacks which were interesting, but it was very cold so we headed on.
We wanted to visit 4 castles enroute today but only 1 allowed visitors, it was called Sinclair and Girnigoe which in its day was a magnificent castle and still is one of the best to visit in Scotland. We drove through Wick which was dreary but temptingly average house price is £120k... We drove down the east coast and decided to fast track another day as wasn't an awful lot to see and we could see mountains in the distance, so we headed for them. Enroute we stopped at Whaligoe steps, which is 300 steps etched into the cliff side and has been used for 300 years for fisherman bringing in their catch. We didn't walk down due to conditions and James slipped over twice on the boggy path to the lookout, which was hilarious. Still happy we went to have a look though.
Afterwards the roads started to get more icy, so we decided to find a park up. One had a short but steep entry and unfortunately we headed a little to far forward so had to go down it and attempt to get out, this was fun.. But erm stressful haha. Afterwards we headed down the road and found an icy pull in so made camp for the night, we were both slightly anxious about getting off from here but luckily managed to with ease... We watched BBC series "Time" which is super addictive and had a lovely massaman curry then went to bed.Читать далее

Day 18. Helmesdale to Inverness

After the morning stress of icy roads and frozen to the ground ramps, we headed down towards Inverness, firstly stopping at Dunrobins castle. Unfortunately for the time of year, it was shut but we still managed to take a look as its a magnificent castle with 189 rooms.
Afterwards we headed down to Tain where you can find 'The Mermaid of the North'. I have seen this on TV before so we thought to swing by to check it out. It was cool to see and Grace did a very good impression of a Mermaid.
We had an hours drive to Inverness, we filled up again with water and fuel (seems never ending) , and drove to our park up. We took Maddy out and then stank out the van with lovely angus burgers and wedges. We both prefer wild camping much more than in the city, stealthy one tonight. But looking forward to be up early to explore Inverness.Читать далее

ПутешественникDunrobin is a fantastic castle, been there many times in the past. They have an unusual museum, falconry displays and lovely gardens and a great cafe! well worth a return visit when it's open :)

JG TRAVELSYeah it looks so good. We defo will be returning. Although it's been the best time of year to do NC500 as no people or midges it is a shame lots of things have shut.. Problem is Scotland has been something different with no midges feels slightly surreal 😂😂

19. Inverness to Edinburgh

The trees and the grass were dusted with thick frost this morning .
We set off into Inverness with Maddy , which involved a very pretty and foggy 30 min walk next to the river . The houses here look so nice too.
We had an explore around the city centre and had a look in some of the quirky Scottish shops before stopping off for some lunch at a dog friendly pub . We both had haggis stuffed chicken , which was actually quite nice !
Afterwards , we headed back to van as we needed to start our 3 hour journey to Edinburgh , stopping at the Culloden battle site along the way .
The battle of Culloden happened in 1746. It was the last pitched battle fought on British soil. A fight between British and Scottish, it was a very bloody battle with mass graves at the battle field which still are raised to the day.
We walked around all of the battlefield , which took a good hour and headed back to the van .
We carried on our journey until we finally 3 hours later reached Edinburgh . First stop was a supermarket and fuel station. Enroute we spoke to Kalata ,as it’s her birthday today, which was nice . Kalata reminded us it was Maddy’s birthday yesterday so we picked up some belated birthday treats for her. Then we headed to our park up for the night , a tucked away little car park on the north west side of the city .
We took Maddy on a walk and gave her some birthday treats. she had a doggy Christmas pudding and some chicken sticks!

JG TRAVELSInverness was lovely , the Leakeys book store was my favourite shop there .we really wanted to go and have a look at Edinburgh castle, but theu wouldnt allow dogs which was a real shame !
