    Along the danube to Hungary!

    After a longer evening than expected, we started late into the day. It was already very hot. We followed the Eurovelo 6 along the "Donau" (Danube in Hungary). The road was perfect. Wind was supportive. With 30+ km per hours, we easily rolled along the river.

    At lunchtime, we passed the Olympic Rafting Center and wanted to try but without a prior course it was too dangerous. So we watched and admired the professional rafters!

    After that, 30 km was nothing as the dam until we crossed a water we passed a hydro electronic power station that counts for 8% of Slovakia's energy.

    After crossing boarder to Hungary, we found such a great restaurant. Wis culinary highlight was the tasty garlic soup in a real bread as big as a pumpkin. And it was only the starter!

    Crazy night

    Es ging morgens früh los um das Tagesziel Budapest zu erreichen, um dort Andre zu treffen.

    Es war wohl der heißeste Tag bislang. Auf dem Weg wurde öfter die Donau zum Abkühlen aufgesucht.
    Ab Esztergom wurde es landschaftlich wieder schöner mit kleinen Bergen auf beiden Seiten.

    In Budapest angekommen nahmen wir ein "Low Budget Hostel" um im Partyviertel zu nächtigen. Zuerst sollten unsere Fahrräder auf der Straße parken, erst als wir kurz vor Abschluss der Buchung einer anderen Unterkunft waren, durften wir sie ausnahmsweise im Treppenhaus im 3.OG stehen lassen.
    Wir ließen uns durch die sehr warme Sommernacht treiben, besuchten sogar eine Skybar (die erst mit Hilfe der Promoterin durch verschiedene Treppenhäuser gefunden werden konnte) und schafften es während des Gewitters gerade noch vor dem Platzregen zurück ins Hostel. Dort wunderte sich Jo warum da ein Typ in SEINEM Bett lag. Zum Glück war noch ein anderes frei. In der Nacht wurde man plötzlich von einer laut ins Zimmer kommenden pöbelnden Frau geweckt, die wenig später wieder verschwand. Eine Stunde später gegen 5 Uhr schreckte Jo erneut hoch. Diesmal tauchte die Frau in Begleitung von 2 Polizisten und 2 gutaussehenden Polizistinnen auf welche die Frau ihre Sachen packen ließ und anschließend mitnahmen. - Was für eine Nacht.

    'The Body' & Water Polo

    After the 'exciting' night with a couple of hours of interrupted sleep, we entered the exhibition 'Body'. We were astonished how accurate the dead bodies have been prepared showing every single muscle, the whole nerve system, our blood circulation, the digestion process and the bones. We were wondering why the prepared bodies were so small? By asking, we got to know that only Asian bodies have been prepared, which we think was kind of odd to be shown in Europe...

    After that, we relaxed at the Danube and watched the Red Bull Air Race pilots during their training session for the race on Saturday.

    After some sufficient hours of sleep in a beautiful apartment, we went to the semi finals of Waterpolo. Why did nobody tell me before that Waterpolo athletes are so f** well trained and good looking ? (Wi)    Read more

    Red Bull Air Race Budapest

    Es gab Lärm, Rauch und ne geile Flugshow.
    Die Besonderheit in Budapest: die Piloten fliegen vor dem Start erstmal unter der berühmten Kettenbrücke hindurch. Anschließend geht es durch ein Slalom. Am Ende des Parcours wird mit einem Salto umgedreht. Das ganze zwei mal. Dauert ca. 1 min pro Lauf.
    Geschwindigkeit ca. 370km/h
    Beschleunigung: 10g (Ein 70kg schwerer Pilot wiegt dann in dem Moment der Beschleunigung beim Salto 700kg)
    Das Rahmenprogramm war auch nicht zu verachten. Zum Beispiel die Red Bulls Flying Acrobatics.

    Highlight war jedoch ganz klar der Jet Man! Besonders da war Jo neidisch auf die Hobbyfotografen und ihre 1m langen Objektive. Jo    Read more

    New territory

    Today, we left Budapest and entered new territory where both of us had never been before. A lower number of cyclists travel here.

    Recommended by a local, we crossed through the highly protected water area south of Budapest, which accounts for 70% of the capitals regions water ressources. There were even signs of shooting (!) but luckily nothing happened at all.

    Now, we camp our first night legally fine on a public camp ground next to the Danube. Best thing: Free warm shower and toilet. Much better than some commercial camping grounds that we have visited.

    Speeding

    After a good night in the tent, a self made coffee in the sunny morning, we continued to Baja. Actually, nothing really happened and everything went smoothly. We cycled for some time ~30km/h because the route was pretty good. Wi ate two ice cream as there was milk in it that Jo could not digest.

    In Baja, we slept in the house of warmshower Roland with his wife and their four kids. We had a great dinner and thanks for interesting conversations about the political situation. (wi)    Read more

    Heute sind wir so früh wie noch nie losgeradelt (7.15 Uhr). Es ging die letzten Meter auf der östlichen Seite der Donau entlang, bis wir mit der Fähre nach Mohács (Dort ist im Februar traditionelles Faschingsfest) über setzten.
    Etwas weiter südlich entdeckte Jo am Horizont einen Aussichtsturm auf den er gerne wollte. Vor dem Turm angekommen waren wir verwundert warum er eingezäunt mitten im Maisfeld steht. Jo fuhr noch eine Seite ab um das Ende des Zauns zu finden (es gab keine) währenddessen gesellte sich kurz eine Streife zur wartenden Wi. Ein Blick auf die Karte gab Klarheit: das Maisfeld war ein Zipfel der Grenze zu Kroatien. Den Zaun hat Herr Ader (Ungarns Präsident) im Zuge seiner Null Flüchtlingspolitik für 3.000.000.00 € bauen lassen. Irgendwie traurig!
    Vor dem Grenzübergang stauten sich kilometerlang LKW an LKW. Wir radelten fröhlich vorbei, mussten dann aber auch unsere Pässe rausholen und warten, da Kroatien nicht zum Schengenraum gehört.
    An einem Weinkeller konnten wir dann nicht vorbei fahren. Irgendwie schmeckt dort der Wein, so nah am Weinberg, besonders gut.
    Danach hatten wir nur noch ein paar Meter zu unserem kleinen Campingplatz, den wir ganz alleine nutzen konnten.    Read more

    Detour to Osijek

    Today, we made a detour to Osijek to visit the 4th largest city of Croatia and the economic center of the eastern Croatian region Slavonia.

    Typical slavonic meal is fish soup, so we ate it even though wi would not order it again. :D

    On the way, we crossed the National Park kopâcki rit
    with many wild birds, lakes and forest.

    In the afternoon, it was not so easy to find a bar showing the soccer game today. When we finally found one, the Croatian TV only showed Schweden vs. Mexico!!! So we had to misuse their wifi to stream the German game via proxy server and watch it on the phone. Unfortunately the game wasn'r really worth as you might know... But life is not over and we had Cevapcici, Pleskavica and as desert palatvcinke :)

    As it was raining the whole afternoon and Wi fell off the bike (wet street..) we took a nice apartment tonight! Both, bike and wi are alive.

    Outside EU: Welcome in Serbia

    We crossed the boarder to Serbia! Now, we have to get used to the cyrillic letters to find our way. At least language is almost the same as in Croatia. We ate lunch for ~4€ (~480 Dinar) both and two kids were begging. It felt like another world.

    On the way to Novi Sad, the rain was pooring for ten minutes so we had to make use of or plastic folia, hide and wait. :D it worked out!

    In Novi Sad, we visited a warmshower family who received a package from Germany from us that we could pick up at their place. We had a great chat with them, a juice and they even gave us a prepaid sim card!

    The city Novi Sad was astonishing! Young people everywhere on the streets drinking and chatting and we only made it to drink one wine because we were so tired. But it is an awesome city for all type of activities. Also, it could have been a part of Berlin or some other cool Western city ;) Wi loved the place immediately.

    We realized that we need to cycle ~100km per day for the next days that Jo catches his flight from Sofia. So, we keep going now! (wi)    Read more

    Schlammschlacht - Fight with the clouds

    Der Tag begann mit einem Frühstück an der Donau mit Blick auf das Fort von Novi Sad, welches nie eingenommen wurde. Zum Frühstück gab es unter anderem eine viertel Melone vom Markt zum Touripreis natürlich, aber immer noch sehr günstig. Wir waren gerade fertig, ehe der erste Schauer des Tages einsetzte.

    Entlang der Bundesstraße 100, die aufgrund einer Baustelle später gesperrt war, wurde der Verkehr immer weniger. Wir hielten seitlich bei einem netten Reifenservice, um den Reifen Nachdruck zu verleihen.
    Kurz vor Beginn der Baustelle machten wir mit zwei Hunden Bekanntschaft welche die Autos durch ließen, aber uns Fahrradfahrer ein Stück bellend und nach der Fahrradtasche schnappend für einige Meter im Spallier begleiteten. Ich hab Wi noch nie so schnell ein Berg hochfahren sehen.
    Wenig später bogen wir auf ein Feldweg ab, um die Baustelle zu umfahren wie es auch wenige einheimische Autos taten. Doch als der Schotter aufhörte war erstmal kein weiter kommen. Zahlreiche Autos hatten sich auf einem Lehmmatschweg, der so schmierig war, das auch wir schoben, festgefahren. Ein Geländewagen mit Seilwinde leistete erste Hilfe. Auf den hundert Metern sammelte sich bei Jo soviel Dreck an Reifen, Bremse und Kette, dass er beim nächsten Einheimischen anhielt um sein Fahrrad dort zu waschen.
    Kurz darauf trafen wir eine Familie aus Südkorea die mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs ist!
    Ansonsten haben wir noch Kühe auf einer Kreuzung getroffen und wieder versucht Wolken zu entkommen. Eine gab uns keine Zeit zum Nachdenken und begrüßte uns mit Platzregen. Wir bogen ins Maisfeld ab und schützen uns unter der bewehrten Plane. Nach dem Regen sahen wir, dass uns nur 300m von der Trockenheit getrennt haben.

    Auf der Reise angekommen

    Eigentlich wäre heute ein guter Zeitpunkt für ne Pause gewesen, aber es geht weiter. Wir treffen einige Locals und übernachten in einem Wasserkraftwerk. Die Landschaft seit Belgrad erreicht einen neuen Höhepunkt.

    Wir wurden von der Sonne geweckt, der Tag war uns wohl gesonnen. Nach einem Frühstück beim Bäcker in Belgrad ging es los.
    Schon nach der Donau Überquerung wurden wir von Peter, einem Local, gestoppt. Er kämpft für (bessere) Radwege und ein Campingfläche auf der anderen Seite von Belgrad. Um dem Nachdruck zu verleihen interviewt er vorbei reisende Radfahrer für seinen Channel (Link folgt ggf.). Ansonsten baut er Flugzeuge als Flugzeugbauingenieur.

    Von Peter ging es den Damm an der Donau entlang, mit der schönsten Landschaft bislang, aber nur sehr langsam. Wir brauchten 2 Std für die ersten 20km. Aufgrund des Regens der vergangenen Tage war der Weg auf dem Damm, der aus Wiese bestand, recht aufgeweicht.
    Wir wechselten auf die Straße und trafen Milan auf seinem Rennrad. Er fragt ob wir Zeit für ein Bier hätten und würde das beste Restaurant mit schönem Ausblick kennen, da konnten wir nicht nein sagen. Wir fuhren durch schlammige rutschige Feldwege in die Einsamkeit. Schnell sammelte sich Dreck überall, die Reifen waren plötzlich doppelt so breit und erreichten den Rahmen. Es musste angehalten werden, um den Reifen durch den angesammelten Dreck wieder gangbar zu machen. Dazu musste vorsichtig in die Pedale getreten werden um keinen Wheelspin zu erzeugen. Jo fuhr eingeklickt, was ihm schnell zum Verhängnis wurde. Er rutschte weg und landete breitseitig im Lehmmatsch.
    Beim Restaurant angekommen hat sich der Weg dennoch gelohnt mit Lage an einem Zufluss zur Donau, wo die Gäste eigentlich mit dem Boot hin geshuttelt werden, aber leider keine Fahrräder.
    Milan kommt aus dem Ort, ist Arzt und hatte seinen freien Tag. Nach dem Essen lud er uns noch auf ein "Bike wash" ein.
    Jetzt war es 14 Uhr und wir hatten erst 20km und noch 85km vor uns. Wir machten erstmal Strecke und kamen dann in einen kurzen Wolkenbruch. Danach hielt uns ein alter Mann im Auto an, um uns mit frisch geernteten Pflaumen zu beschenken.
    Im Zielort angekommen suchten wir im Dorfzentrum ein offenes Wlan, um eine Unterkunft zu buchen. Nach ein paar Minuten kam ein Mann und fragte ob wie eine Dusche bräuchten und noch ein Zeltplatz, bei ihm auf der Arbeit sei das kein Problem.     Serbia, what a beauty

    After the night in the hydro electric water station, Јовица even made us coffee! I'm still absolutely stunned about the hostility we have been facing by the Serbians we met so far! :) :) We took the ferry as our first thing in the morning at 7:30h and had a small break first at the shore.

    After two hours of nice landscapes even with some touristic beaches and cafes, we passed the Golubac Fortress (Голубачки гра) which is a quite impressive fort from the 14th century and had been owned by Turks, Hungarians, Bulgarians, Austrians and finally Serbs with its significant location to control the Danube river traffic during the battles.

    Our last hour, we joined a French cyclist who just started a cycle tour for the next two years. He carried 50kg (!!) on his bike even though he was only 60kg himself after loosing 8kg in 4 weeks (!) Just. Wow.

    I need to mention that a man gave us fresh pears on the street today :)

    Rabenschwarzer Tag? Eigentlich schien die Sonne am wolkenlosem Himmel.
    Es standen gleich zu Beginn 700 Höhenmeter an. Jo bog, fast oben am Berg angekommen, auf einen Feldweg ab, der nochmal steiler war, um zum Ausichtsturm zu gelangen. Doch er trat mit aller Kraft ins Leere. Das Schaltauge, welches das Verbindungsstück zwischen Schaltwerk und Rahmen ist, brach entzwei. Infolgedessen rissen auch gleich noch die Führungsschienen des Schaltwerks. Die Folge: kein Weiterfahren/Rollen möglich. Nach einer kurzen Analyse stand fest: Gewaltbruch in Folge eines Dauerbruchs. Dies half uns jedoch nicht weiter. Mitten im Nichts auf dem Berg verloren sah Jo gerade noch ein T4 mit Tübinger Kennzeichen passieren, war jedoch zu langsam, um ihn anzuhalten. Wäre das die Rettung gewesen?
    10min später kam ein Bauer, der Holz sammelte um daraus Kohle herzustellen, mit seinem altem Traktor vorbei. Wir hielten ihn an und verständigten uns mit Händen und Füßen. Er verstand uns und kramte ein Tüdeldraht aus seiner Notfallzauberkiste hervor mit dem Jo Kette und Schaltwerk befestigen konnte, um zumindest weiter rollen zu können.
    Die Entscheidung den eben hochgefahren Weg wieder zurück ins nächst größere Dorf zu rollen, lag auf der Hand. Den Berg herunter war es entspannt. Auf der Ebene waren es noch 7km bis zum Ort. Wi zog Jo die Hälfte der Strecke, bis ein Moped vorbei kam, bei dem Jo sich festhalten durfte. Jetzt ging es schnell aber auch anstrengend bis ins Dorf, wo wir am Morgen gestartet waren.
    Im Dorf versuchten wir ein Ersatzteil zu bekommen. Im Hostel traffen wir einen Österreicher der mit dem Kajak! die Donau runter paddeln und wieder Rum einen kannte der einen kennt der vielleicht das Rad reparieren könnte. Dies ist jedoch leider wie schon vermutet in ganz Serbien nicht erhältlich, da Spezialteil. Also machten wir uns mit dem Taxi auf nach Negotin, unserem eigentlichem Tagesziel.     Bike repaired. Yehaaa. It was the best and fastest repair ever. Slobodan managed have the specific broken bike part made individually by a friend in Beograde, have it sent to Negotin and assembled it within 24 hours. The bike even got washed and brakes and gears maintained!

    With a fresh bike we cycled to Vidin and crossed the boarder to Bulgaria!

    In Vidin, we went to have a look at the Bada Vida castle which was again inhabited by many different rulers.

    Then, we took the train to Sofia to catch Jo's flight to his moped tour the next morning. (We saved to cycle 6000m in height and 200km)

    It was a bit of stressful to organize a place that takes care of Jos bike for the next two weeks but finally we found a bike shop (and hope it will be safe there :D)

    Sofia, what a vibrant city! What a great view to Torfeno Branishte and we enjoy the variety of food.

    After a relaxed evening dicovering the city, Jo flies to Germany and wi is heading south to the Rila mountains.    Read more

    Today, it was going up the hill. The first 2,5 hours nothing but gaining elevation. Sun, sweat and making height.

    Luckily, I had a lunch break in the sun and after continuing riding, I saw it had rained cats and dogs only 500m further up the hill.

    I reached Somokov, very close to Borovets, the starting point for hiking to the Musala peak and a ski resort in the winter. Weather forecast does not look promising for hiking to the top tomorrow as thunderstorm is forecasted and there are only 6° degrees... but we'll see ;)

    After climbing further 10km up the hill on that sunny morning, I met 'Butch', real name Ognyan, whos owning around 20 horses on his little farm. Some more of his horses are living wildly in the mountains. He has a unique attitude towards nature and knows the mountains like no other. He invited me for coffee, self made herbal tea with self made honey from special pine trees. It felt, as if theres was another time zone, a slower one. The horses are well trained and strong and the film 'Vikings' and many others have been produced with his horses.

    I decided to try a tour on a horseback. Was a bit unsure if it might be counterproductive for my back but it turned out to be supportive.

    So, we rode a tour trough the forest and steep ski slopes. Fantastic experience and sceneries and I can only agree with with the other peoples feedback to it. If you're ever here try: http://www.horse-riding-bg.com

    Musala Peak 1/2

    Today, I wanted to make it to the top of Musala (2925m), the highest peak between Alps and Caucasus in Europe. Unfortunately, the the gondola did not work which would bring me to 2300m.So, I decided to give it a try from Borovets (1300m)

    I started hiking. I sweated excessively. The only things you hear is your own breath, the river and a few birds. My heart was pounding heavily as the air got thinner. After climbing up for 3,5hours of a demanding hike trough forest, a pathway that partly turned into a river, I reached the top of the Gondola Yastrebez on 2300meter.
    There, it was extremely foggy and an icy wind blowing into my soaked clothes. From there I'd still needed around 2,5hours to the top and I had to come down as well. So, I decided to turn back and enjoy the tour instead of making a survival trip out of it.

    I only met 4 persons and two dogs along the way. One dog tried to eat me while he only wanted to play...as he was pretty tall, I did not like the idea too much :D

    The landscape is just amazing. You can watch how it turns from a dense wood into an open landscape after passing the tree line. Sun finds its way trough the foggy clouds and the water vaporizes into the air between the plants. The Bistritza river is floating heavily downwards and partly floods the path.

    Thanks for this lovely 6hours hiking trip Mountain Musala in the Rila mountain region. I'll find a way to continue exactly where I stopped to reach the peak someday ;)    Read more

    Downhill all day & back to civilization

    It was an awesome day. The way was going down from Borovets to Sofia for more than 70km!! With every further kilometer down the hill, I couldn't believe it - but it did not change :) So, this was the reward for the uphill sessions. Thanks to gravity!

    After some sightseeing and food in the city center, I met a friend of a friend of a friend who is physiotherapist with his second job. He helped to improve my back a bit and did it totally for free out of hospitality as he is doing ultra marathons himself and knows about some pain (thanks!!) After the treatment we watched the soccer match. So, now I hope to see Croatia in the final!    Read more
