We had a great final day in Kansas City. We were able to enjoy the club before our Chicago flight left.

    We had an uneventful flight.

I enjoyed talking to the double A’s while waiting for our flight to board in Chicago.

It’s going to be a long flight.

  • ORD to Heathrow to Oslo

    September 13 in Norway ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

We had uneventful flight to Chicago.

We flew AA non-stop to London. It was a full flight. Most horrible flight I’ve ever taken in a long time.

Glenn sat on the isle. I was in the middle and a big black lady sat next to me at the window and she overlapped on my seat.

We left Chicago around 9pm and arrived in London around 11am. We had a short layover and boarded a British Airways that sat on the tarmac an extra 30 minutes.

I slept a little flying to Oslo. We figured out how to take the train to Oslo central then we walked to our Free hotel Comfort Inn Oslo central. We ate cheese and crackers and carrots.

It felt good to take off our compression socks.

Tomorrow we board the NCL Star for the Norway and Iceland cruise.

When we landed in Norway, it became my 75th country!

  • Boarding the NCL Star

    September 14 in Norway ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

This morning, the breakfast was delicious and variety was unlimited. Took the city bus to the dock. (4.00) senior citizen. We had to walk several blocks to the ship. We’ve met new friends already.

Check-in was simple and a breeze. We met several folks already while standing in line.

Robin worked at CruiseNext on NCL Sky earlier this year. He gave us a big hug!

We plan to go to the 8pm show after dinner in the back of the ship in the main dining room.weather was cloudy and it rained in the afternoon. Kinda chilly.

Glenn put up the twinkling lights up in our room. Ate breakfast at the main dinning room. Played Kings corner and rummy cube.

    Slept through lunch.

  • Day 3 Stravanger, Norway

    September 16 in Norway ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

We woke up at 6am and watched us slowly arrive into Stavanger. Glenn and I ate breakfast in the main dining room.

We finally met our concierge Raymond. He helped us get off of NCL Star in a timely manner.

We walked through the streets, past the cathedral and on to the bus/train station. We met a couple off the ship as they were walking by.

We were picked up by Arnstein. He and his family are a “candle in the window” couple that agreed to pick us up and show off their country and we would treat them for dinner.

Arnstein gave us a gran tour of the area. Then we drove to their home and had a delicious lunch with his wife Lívia. After having a great conversation, Arnstein took us around some more areas, seeing the coast line, farm lands and huge rocks.

Later on me met up with Livia and their 2 children at a local restaurant/hotel. We had a typical Norwegian meal. Delicious.

It was a great day meeting new friends and enjoying the Norwegians life style. We paid for the dinner then we gave Arnstein some money to mail the 5 postcards and use the rest for gasoline.

I’m so thankful for “ACandleInTheWindow” folks. We have met countless new friends that showed hospitality through this App.

  • Day 4 Bergen, Norway

    September 17 in Norway ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

I tried to get on a waitress for an NCL cruise but it was full.

We ate breakfast in the main dining room then talked to Roland to change our diners for tomorrow night.

We decided to take the HOP ON HOP OFF bus. Nice small tour.

We got tickets for an 11am tour of the Fjords. Great Decision.

There are over 1,500 islands in Norway. And thousands of tunnels. The longest tunnel is 24 kilometers long. Besides mineral and Oils and Gas as exportation, salmon production.

Note the picture of the US embassy: McDonalds!
    The weather was changing constantly.

    Rain. Sunshine. Rain. Sunshine.

Great excursion! Fjords were majestic. Waterfalls oh my!

  • Day 5 Kristiansund, Norway

    September 18 in Norway ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

We kinda slept in and got to breakfast after 8am. We shared the table with 2 other couples. One couple are from USA but live in France and travels the world.

We had an excursion booked for 3:00pm. And we rode the Atlantic Road -a series of bridges connecting 7 islands. Beautiful.

We also went into the largest and deepest underground tunnel. We visited the oldest state church in the area.

It was raining off and on all day. The tour was very educational and informative.

For dinner we had reservations at Moderno, the Brazilian steak house. Yes, we left full.

There’s another cruise ship in town. The Disney Fantasy. This town is very small and has lots of character.

We took a Grey Line Hop On Hop Off tour. It started raining. We’ve had 5 stops in 5 days. Looking forward to a Sea Day and dinner with the officers tomorrow night.

  • Day 7 Sea Day

    September 20 in Norway ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Finally, we get a SEA Day. Our itinerary has been extraordinary and so fascinating with 5 straight port days so this sea day was much needed.

As we were literally pulling out of port to head towards Iceland we received a phone call from Thomas. We talked for 5 minutes before the call dropped because we were leaving the cell phone tower range.

Thomas mentioned that Karen was in the hospital with heart issues. I cried and told Karen I loved her.

The ocean waters were really rough through most of the night and into all of Saturday. I didn’t sleep well for worrying over my poor Karen.

Saturday we attended a lecture on Apollo 11. Very informative and creative. I took a good long nap while Glenn went to another lecture on the Vikings.

We had a special dinner with the officers. We had a meal with the doctor on the boat and the other officer was a 3rd engineer. I sat next to Francine. We quickly remembered we were on the 2020 Covid cruise and recounted our travels snd such. Francine was in the same hot air balloon ride with us and even played LEFT CENTER RIGHT with other friends.

The waves were very fierce most of the day. People looked like drunken sailors walking the halls.

I was able to talk to my concierge to get a courtesy phone call to the states. I couldn’t reach Karen, Thomas or Ellen. I did have a 10 min conversation with Sherrie who gave me an update on Karen. Karen’s is having breathing treatments and is doing much better.

The following went out in an email blast to church members along with the service schedule and cancellations. Thomas wrote this……….

    Prayer Request for Presbytera Karen

I want to sincerely thank all of you for your prayers for Presbytera Karen, and I ask your forgiveness for not being able to share what was happening with the entire community sooner.

Earlier this week, Presbytera Karen began experiencing severe chest and back pain, along with extreme difficulty breathing. After visits to two emergency rooms, one urgent care center, and now the hospital, we have learned that she has sustained damage to both her lungs and her heart. This morning, her doctor informed us that she likely suffered a heart attack and is currently experiencing congestive heart failure. While this is serious, it also seems to point to an underlying cause.

Tonight, after meeting with both her pulmonologist and her cardiologist, we were told that the leading indication is an autoimmune disorder—most likely lupus. While lupus may not be curable, it is treatable.

I ask that you continue to pray that Presbytera Karen may find relief from her pain and be granted much-needed rest. Please also pray that her doctors will be given wisdom to diagnose and treat both the underlying condition and its effects properly. Please pray for me too. It really hurts watching her suffer.

Because Presbytera Karen needs rest and time to heal, she will not be receiving visitors at this time. We are truly grateful for the love, prayers, and support of our entire community during this difficult and challenging week.

    With love in Christ,
    Fr. Thomas Bartz

  • Day 8 Reykjavik, Iceland

    September 21 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

Due to rough seas and weather conditions, it is taking us longer to get to Reykjavík. The captain just announced that we will arrive there late, 4 PM today. Therefore, we are going to spend the night in Reykjavík and leave tomorrow at noon missing the port of Isafjordur, Iceland tomorrow.

Well, I was so proud of myself for having booked 2 independent excursions in Reykjavik and the following day in Isafjordur. (Just learned it from Darla!). Now I so appreciate all those times Darla organized the excursions.

I immediately cancelled Monday’s excursion. I had 1 hour before cancellation was up. Just in the nick of time.

Then I sent an email to today’s operator advising of our late arrival. I got an immediate reply and they’ll be meeting us at 4. The excursion will be shorten. So things will work out.

We attended a lecture on Kennedy Space Center. Again, very informative and interesting.

We met the 4pm private tour, it was shorten version. We stopped at a place where you see the Europe and North America plates/fault lines or whatever.

We also stopped to see the geysers. And the next stop was this huge massive waterfall! It was very similar to igauasu falls in South America. And finally to a volcano (distinct). Although the excursion was shorten because of arriving later into port, it was beautiful to see Iceland. Cold and rain yet warm with glacier and hot springs!

  • Day 9 extra Day in Reykjavik

    September 22 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Yet another schedule change. We are here in Reykjavik until 5pm and our itinerary is being drastically altered and changes - that’s what cruising is all about. Very flexible and going with the changes.

We had breakfast with an attorney from west palm beach Florida that knows of South America Mission.

We took the hop on hop off bus through town and to the Peran museum. Very good and hands on. Lots of information . Highlight was the ice cave we walked through and seeing a film about the northern lights. So photos here not ones took in person, only photos of the presentation. We learned about the volcanoes that circle island.

Yes, this is the idd st land of “fire and ice”

I wrote several postcards and we had an ice-cream cone before we took a taxi back to the ship.

  • Day 10 Isafjord, Iceland

    September 23 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

I was able to book a last minute Viator to Dynjandi waterfalls! This was the same tour we were booked on for yesterday. I can’t believe we were docking at 7:30, I booked the tour at 7:15 and we were on the bus at 8:45.

We drove thru 2 unique 5 mile tunnels. Some parts the tunnel were just 1 lane.

These fjords are extreme. There’s sheep grazing and this is s very isolated place. This area had their first snow last weekend and the waterfalls were full. Water is very clear and cold.

It was very windy and kinda cold at the Dynjandi waterfalls. But beautiful!
So thankful for this “last minute” excursion that I was able to book.

We walked into a hardware store and noticed these long words. Icelandic’s language is unique.

We had dinner with Jim and Maria who we met on the first day of the cruise.

    September 24 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

We went on an NCL excursion. Epic.

The fjords were beautiful. Our first stop was Dimmuborgum hiking trails lava layers and formation. Nice walk among fall trees turning.

Next stop was “little Yellowstone” but no geysers. Just hit steam bubbling up. Yes it did smell!

We had a nice 30 min snack at a local hotel.

    Psalms 104:5-11

    We viewed Godress waterfalls! Beautiful.

Just a small city with only 500 people.

We walked through the small town. Stopped at a grocery store and did a Darla “. We bought some chips, local chips. Found some marshmallow hotdogs and marshmallow hamburger. A kids treat. Sat at a park bench and FaceTime granddaddy.

There were photos of folks that took of the Northern lights, here on the Ship, last night.

  • Day 13 High Sea Day

    September 26 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 57 °F

We list an hour as we head east towards Scotland. Snd it was a very ROUGH Sea Day. Thankfully I didn’t fall, however I clung onto the hand railings.

Yes, I have never ever been in such rough high seas. We ate breakfast in the main dining room then attended a lecture about the sinking of the Titanic and the Lithuania. (I fell asleep 2 times).

We played a game of Rummycube, lunch snd then a good 2 hour nap.

For the past 24 hours we have really been rocking and a rolling. We had dinner at the O’sheehan’s bar and grill followed by the evening show featuring a violinist.

  • Day 14 Edinburgh, Scotland

    September 27 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

We had a late arrival because between 10pm and 11pm the NCL Star slowed down to have an emergency helicopter airlift to get someone to the hospital. Because of that, we arrived at 10:30 instead of 9:00am. Then face-to-face immigration before we could get off.

We took the Hop on Hop Off bus (blue line). We walked up Mile road. Walked into a Radisson hotel to use the bathroom. Glenn talked to a guy that was playing bagpipes along the road. We toured St. Giles cathedral.

We had plans to visit with Robert Bell and his wife (friends with Ian Leitch/Moody Bible Institute) but since we arrived late, it wasn’t meant to be. Next time!

Day was good. Edinburgh is a beautiful city. I only wish that my dear friend Ian Leitch was still alive, I would have enjoyed visiting him in his beautiful country. Ian and I served together on MBI Alumni Board. We sat next to each other during the meetings. Ian even flew to Guatemala 2007 to be our guest speaker.

  • Day 15/16 Sea Day & London

    September 29 in England ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Sunday was sea day. Glenn and I attended the worship service. I took a nap and in the evening we had dinner with Maria and Jim. Pack and ready to get off of NCL Star.

We docked at 5am. Glenn got me oatmeal for breakfast. We took an NCL London tour with drop off at Heathrow. It was just a quick overview of London.

Customs and immigration was a breeze. Our first stop was Buckingham palace. Changing of the guards. Next stop. Tower of London, fish and chips. We drove by Big Ben, Westminster abbey, London bridge, Trafalghar square, Piccadilly square.

We navigated from terminal 2 where we were dropped off to take a free shuttle (train) to terminal 4 then a walking bridge to the hotel,

We asked for room with a few of the airport and airstrip. 625! Nice view. Now to do the reverse to get to terminal 3 for tomorrow’s non stop flight to DFW!

This has been an epic journey to Norway, seeing the fjords and then over to Iceland and seeing the northern lights! We had great crew and pretty good food. The seas were typically calm except fur one day and it was EXTREMELY high seas. I felt I could have rolled out of bed. In conclusion, this was country number 71, 72, and 73! (Norway, Iceland and Scotland).
