  • Grüezi Lola!

    7 augustus 2019, Zwitserland ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

It's been already one year an a half since Lola and I (Judit) met in the beautiful Taghazout in Morocco. I attended her yoga classes during a week in front of that magical beach and I felt a very special connection from the very beginning with her. Her life stories were very inspiring to me and taught me a lot more than she could ever imagine.
That was the beginning of our friendship :)

I couldn't start my trip knowing that she just moved from Asia to Europe. Now that I had some time I could visit her and meet her kind husband, her new home, her life in Switzerland. Thank you for opening your home and heart to us guys. We had an amazing time with you hiking, riding your e-bikes, doing some yoga, SUP and grill. We couldn't have imagined of a better start for our adventure. See you very soon. Namaste ☆

  • Milano - bella Italia

    10 augustus 2019, Italië ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

On our way to Italy we tried to hitchhike as the connections weren't the best. Literally, the destiny guided us into God's hands. A catholic priest from Bavaria heading to Padua gave us a ride to Milano :-)Meer informatie

  • Venice, you are a piece of art!

    11 augustus 2019, Italië ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Venice was an unavoidable stop on our way to Slovenia and a huge surprise for our eyes! We were expecting streets full of tourists and "picture points" where everyone would fight for taking their best selfie to upload to their Instagram stories. Instead, we got lost through the narrow streets of its old city and we couldn't stop looking up the tall beautiful old houses amazed by their faded colours. This city has such a special personality hidden behind their walls.

We found much less people than expected (we avoided the 'mass' actually) and also found very affordable prices to enjoy a delicious pasta in the middle of such a beautiful vignette. Arrivederci Venezia!

  • A creepy night and a wonderful day

    12 augustus 2019, Slovenië ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Let's say that Slovenia didn't give us the warmest arrival... We decided not to spend the night in Venice and to continue straight away by a bus with Nomago (bus company most commonly used in Slovenia). We had a twin room booked for that night with a late check in and surprise! When we arrived at the hostel we found out that they'd locked us out and that we couldn't get into the hostel. The guests let us in.

We waited around 45minutes and tried to reach out the owner and tried to find other options to sleep. During that time we got asked by a drug addict if we had something for him, he wouldn't leave and instead decided to smoke two cigguis; an ex soldier from Kosovo and his cousin; and some weird people passed by.
With that weird scenario, one of the guys from Kosovo offered us to sleep in his room and leave before the light goes up. So that's what we did.

That night we discovered that the remains of the Yugoslavian war were still very present for many people. Those guys were living in a hostel 2 hours away of Ljubljana where they work. They left their family behind just for a better salary and they didn't even find that in Slovenia. Their next hope is to go to Germany and get a better future.

The next day after sleeping less than 5 hours in a 30 degrees hostel room we took a train to the lake Bohinj, a breathtaking place with turquoise water and beautiful mountains. But again, another surprise was that the camping was booked out and the area was full of Germans with their vans.

From then on started our real adventure trekking through the Triglav National Park and camping in the wildness.

  • Break a leg!

    13 augustus 2019, Slovenië ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Good luck was needed to take ourselves safe and our 15kg backpacks + our guitar tied with Jonas backpack up to the hut. We hiked around 6km with a total ascent of 1000m with maaaany breaks. We run out of water and on our way found none.
Arriving at the hut it felt like heaven. We had a soup and some traditional Slovenian food and played the hole afternoon Kniffel with a German family.
At night we found a good spot to camp. Later on the fatigue and dehydration hitted me hard making me shiver and vomit. To rest was the only way to recover.

The following day we descended 14km and around 1400metres to Soča Valley in the Triglav National Park, one of the most beautiful places that we've ever seen. We stayed at Jelinč Camping to get some rest. That place is wonderful and nearby the river. It has some wooden swings, hammocks, cats, chickens, cows, sheeps and it's full of flowers. Very recommended for nature lovers and for families.

  • Bled: No camping, no problem!

    16 augustus 2019, Slovenië ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We had seen some pictures of Bled before. What we didn't expect was that it was even more beautiful and romantic in real life. Once again, everything was booked out and we even got turned away at the campsite. But in Bled, if you actually bring your tent, you can find a good hidden spot in the woods in the middle of the town, because this town is surrounded by woods.

No camping, no problem! We waited until dawn to pitch our tent in the woods and went back to the lake to enjoy a beautiful full moon.

When the sun came up we packed everything up and had a swim and breakfast by the lake.

  • Ljubljana

    17 augustus 2019, Slovenië ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We arrived at the capital of Slovenia, named 'European green city' on 2016. Even though we'd already been travelling for a week across the country and we knew that the prices were higher than expected, we were surprised how expensive this city was during the main season! So we decided to spend only a day here. Every hour was worth the stopover. Nobody should miss the city with its tongue twisting name (they spell it Lyoob-lyah-nah), its beautiful buildings, castle and people on the streets who made our day. Luckily we won a free meal spinning the wheel of fortune hahaha

We left Slovenia having enjoyed a lot their lakes, culture and nature but we felt a bit disappointed by the difficult and unrelaxed contact that we had with the locals. Let's say we should give them another chance next time.
Looking forward to experience Bosnia ;)

  • Birthday in Croatia

    18 augustus 2019, Kroatië ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

On the beginning of our trip we didn't know yet where we would be celebrating my birthday. And well, our need to leave Slovenia for their expensive prices brought us to Zagreb. Not bad, huh?

We took the opportunity to discover Croatia's capital with Joaco, a very nice Argentinean guy that we met the night before at the bus on our way to Croatia. We spent the day the three of us discovering the calm streets of Zagreb without a plan, enjoying and having a couple of beers to calm down the extreme heat.
A romantic dinner at night the 2 of us and a nice walk through the old city.

A break was needed so we decided to stay 3 days on the city to get some rest.

Thank you so much to all of you for all the birthday wishes ♡

  • Feeling like home in Bihać / Bosnia

    20 augustus 2019, Bosnië-Herzegovina ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Our arrival in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) hadn't been like the ones in the previous countries. This one was the one that we had been looking for since the moment this trip started. Local people are friendly and ready to help whenever they can. Many people speak some or very good English and even German. If not, they help you anyway in their language or with gestures.

This country is a mix of people: they have three different religions (muslim, orthodox and catholic christs) and with that big different cultural identities and differences that last since hundreds of years. Here we could write now pages about all the conflicts, wars and cruel stories of the past of this region. But let's skip to the present. Present politics are, let's just say...very complicated. Since the Dayton Peace Accords in 1995 for example each election in BiH three different delegates (one for the Serbians, one for the Croats and one for the Bosniaks) are elected to share a rotating 4 year presidential term. Over 50 politician parties exist. Locals told us that,as one of many reasons why BiH won't be able to enter the EU soon. People don't thrust anymore in politics that's why they start running their own business or sadly many young people leave this wonderful country. Maybe it's because of the past that Bosnians are so optimistic they suffered a lot in the past years due to the Yugoslavian war. They want to forget what happened and started to move on.

Bosnia is a country under construction and money is not something that is flowing much in here. Many buildings are empty and remainings of the war from people who left their country. Other houses are inhabited from people but unfinished. And some others found their way to live a good life.

The best of the country is indeed the human quality of the people even though all the struggles and the problems that the country has been going through.
Our first contact with Bosnians was Hasan, our warm-hearted host for the next two days. He owns a modest hostel and he's a guitarist on his free time. We got to meet his lovely family and had a drink with one of his sons; he and his band played for us in the evening folk Bosnian music and he even drove us to the bus station at 7am. Hvala for everything, Hasan!

During our time in Bihać we visited one of the most beautiful nature sceneries of the country: Šrtbački Buk waterfalls. On our way there we hiked through some houses where locals would sell their fruits, home made marmalade, alcohol, and even honey. There's where we met Safir, a friendly man who offered us some shots and some coffee. He could speak German and waved at every person that would walk or drive through in front of his house.

We managed to hitchhike twice: once with two bearded men from Saudi Arabia and the other one with a Bosnian young guy who owned a restaurant in Kulen Vakuf.

With all the kindness received during our first days in the country, we are very excited to continue our trip to the center of the country. Bosnia, we like you! Bosnians, we even like you better!

  • Italian soulmates

    21 augustus 2019, Bosnië-Herzegovina ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Jajce was our stop before Sarajevo. We didn't know what to expect about that town. We just knew that it had a beautiful old town and a magnificent waterfall. We chilled during the day nearby the river and we discovered the city during the sunset. It was a very nice place to see, but again, the best thing that can happen to us is meeting new friends. This time that hilarious globetrotter couple, Lorena and Andrea.

We saw them arriving in their old classic van some hours after us. The following morning we did some yoga, separately but at the same moment. We went to have breakfast and right before they were about to leave, we met in front of a coffee shop. We instantly connected and spent the next three days together in Visoko and Sarajevo playing some guitar and singing on the back of their van, drinking tones of coffee and some Rakija.

How fantastic it is, when you meet people from a different place on that precise moment, so you can find out that you're linked to each other and love the same way of life? What an amazing thing to experience!

Life is simple if you make it simple.

Grazie mille for the laughs and the awesome moments. See you in India ♡

  • Sad to leave Bosnia

    25 augustus 2019, Bosnië-Herzegovina ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Bosnia and Herzegovina is known for its wild rivers and stunning waterfalls. It's not a surprise then if we tell you that many adventure lovers come to the country to enjoy its wild waters doing some rafting. So did we :)

We spent two awesome days in Konjic at Guest House Konjic. Marko was our host and his cosy house is filled with 8 adorable cats and a funny dog. This town was the perfect stop over to charge our batteries, to discover the peaceful town and to connect with the local people.

The rafting along the 23km of Neretva River felt more like a quick ride on a kayak than a rafting ride full of rapids and adrenaline. That's due to the end of the season and its low tide. Even though the speed wasn't as expected we were able to appreciate the awesome nature along the way.
We paddled with 2 Germans and 2 Bosnians, with whom we enjoyed a barbecue on the evening nearby a lake.

Again, Marco's place felt like home for us. His hospitality and kindness made our visit more than worth it. We shared some very interesting chats together and we loved the vegetables of his garden and the wine. Hvala Marco! See you soon!

After visiting Konjic we stopped in Mostar, a must see place. Its architecture is beautiful and you feel like being in a fairy tale when walking through the narrow streets.
The city is located very close from Croatia and it has become a main tourist place in the south of the country. That's probably the reason why we missed that kindness from the people that we had found in much less touristic places.

We felt very sad for leaving this amazing country and awesome people. We'll definitely come back again!

  • Stop over in Dubrovnik

    30 augustus 2019, Kroatië ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

If you are a big fan of Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik is a city that you shouldn't miss if you visit Croatia. It was on our way to Montenegro and we decided to do a stop over.

Following our instincts we found a nice camping located on the surroundings of the city, in Zator Mali. The ocean was in front of our camping and it was the perfect combination to avoid the mass of people and the heat that we found in the city. We met Shirin and Alex there and shared two wonderful evenings together. Thanks for your kindness, bis bald!

Unfortunately our experience wasn't as good as expected. The big amount of tourists plus the heat stucked between the narrow streets of the old city, made it difficult to enjoy. This is why we recommend to visit it during the low season and cross the fingers to find half of the people that we found.

  • A different kind of arrival

    31 augustus 2019, Montenegro ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

What's the best you can actually do, when you don't have anything planned? Let things flow! And that's what we did.

After entering Montenegro by bus and on our way to Herceg Novi, we met 2 nice guys from Radio Dubrovnik sitting next to us. They were on their way to the famous Sea Dance Festival and they invited us to join them. It had been a while since we had a great party, so we couldn't refuse.
So after our short stop in Herceg Novi we went straight to the beach of Buljarica, pitched our tent close to the festival and party on :-)

It was an incredible, unique experience to celebrate with thousands of crazy people from the Balkans at the beach. And the "explosive" shows of Robin Schulz and David Guetta even let us forget that House, Dance and Techno aren't really our first choice of music.

  • The Swiss birds

    3 september 2019, Montenegro ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

After spending some days at the beach and some nights dancing under the Buljarica's moon, we were excited to discover Skadar Lake situated between Montenegro and Albania. This lake is known for its rich flora and fauna and we wanted to spend some time surrounded by nature.

We knew that getting to where we wanted to camp wouldn't be an easy task without a car, but we had to try. Hitchhiking would be the only and "easiest" way to get there. And that's what we did. We managed to get from Sutomore to Virpazar with a Serbian guy who was driving and meanwhile speaking on the walkie-talkie to his stoned friends in their 4x4 Jeeps behind us, while they were singing to us haha. All the seatbelts were broken. Hilarious.

Rijeka was our destination and some locals advised us that not many cars were driving there, so chances of getting there were very low. We hitchhiked for an hour but the cars that stopped were driving to another direction. We quit. And then we found them. Jean and Marie Lise from Switzerland took us with them up to the mountain. They planned to camp within 3km and they changed their plan and drove 21km more just to get us to Rijeka and see that breath-taking canyon. They stayed with us and we enjoyed two days together full of adventure.

Jean says that "birds" fly together, so nice people will always meet nice people. The law of attraction.
We will never forget the subtle and wisdom lessons that they gave us about living life at its fullest enjoying every minute. While writing these words we are listening the song 'Birds' from Imagine Dragons and it says that "birds fly in every direction; I hope to see you again". A bientôt mes amis!

  • Odyssey in Durmitor National Park

    5 september 2019, Montenegro ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We stopped at the capital of the country for one day, in Podgorica. We had heard that this city hadn't anything special but we found a modern city without tourism and with an interesting nightlife. We were positively surprised and we enjoyed our short visit.
The following day we continued our trip to the mountains of Durmitor National Park. What we weren't expecting was that our time at the region wouldn't be as good as we had imagined.

The weather started to be unpredictable; it was changing every few hours and we were having very strong short storms. But as you know, after the rain always comes the sun and, in this case, even a beautiful rainbow ☆

After our experience in Slovenia with our flooded tent, we were scared to go through the same situation but this time in a colder region. We weren't able to go hiking and when we did, I started to feel without energy and tired of travelling. I needed a break.
What we didn't know is that the best (ironically) was about to happen and we started feeling the bites of bed bugs from who knows where. It could only be from the hostels of the previous nights.

The family who runs the camping was a bit weird: the man of the house would tell stories about the past about women, the mother looked unhappy and tried to be friendly and the kids didn't give a shit about the business. Instead, they would put a false smile on their faces to welcome their guests with a shot of homemade Rakija (local alcohol).

It was cold, I was tired and we were full of bed bug bites. We started to feel uncomfortable and we needed to wash all our clothes immediately before they would spread out. We showered two to three times a day and about three times each time with very hot water.

After a day we could already tell that they were gone, because we didn't have any new bites. Puuuuh!

Luckily, Jona sees everything more positive than me. Despite the bites and the bad weather he felt good in his mountains and he could enjoy the trek and a bike ride on his own :)

Again we were very happy hitchhikers at this day :)
2 Montenegrian workers (that showed us how to fit 4 persons in a 3 person van) and afterwards a French couple let us wait maximum for 5minutes to get a lift.

  • Kosovo: a hidden pearl in the Balkans

    12 september 2019, Kosovo ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Our original plan was to travel along Albania but well, plans can change when you meet new people. During the dance Festival in Montenegro we met Besi and Luki and they told us that in case we would travel to their country (Kosovo), they'd be very happy to show us around and to spend some time with us.
We couldn't miss that chance, so we decided to skip Albania (definitely one of our future destinations) and instead take another route to Turkey. After our experience here we couldn't be happier about our decision! Before reading our experience we just want to ask you to go to this country and enjoy their awesome culture and people. You won't regret it!

Kosovo declared themselves independent from Serbia on 2008 and they are recognised as a country for 114 counties but aren't for many others (including Spain, Greece, Argentina, etc). Kosovar's freedom is very restricted: they are just allowed to travel to Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and to Turkey. For the rest of countries in the world they have to apply for a visa.
For us it was hard to imagine that there was a war in this country only 20 years ago. Now the country is blooming like nowhere else that we've seen before and people are willing to make their country an unique place that they can be proud of.

Peja was our first stop and it surprised us how modern it was. It's said that they have the best macchiato in the world, but I don't know if Italians have something to say about that ;)
Streets were full of nice and cozy cafés that are quite busy during the day but specially at night. People go out around 7pm to enjoy a nice macchiato while smoking tones of cigarettes. You can always listen to some local or international music when having a drink but clubs aren't very popular throughout the country. Even that the atmosphere is awesome on the streets.

After two days in the city we visited our friends in their hometown. We will tell you more about our siteseeing and the fantastic time spent together in a different post :)

The next stop was Gjakova, an old city with a strong personality left as a heritage of the Ottoman Empire. It was severely destroyed during the war and most of their houses are either abandoned or destroyed. It has a lot of potential to become an important city for its picturesque streets and wooden houses and businesses.

After Gjakova we spent two days in the old capital of the country, in Prizren. The atmosphere on the streets was similar than the one in Peja. The only difference was that its strategic location close to Albania and Macedonia makes it a much more touristic city, where many cultural events are going on all the time.

Our last stop in the country was in Pristina, the current capital of the country. The contrast between the old concrete architecture from Soviet times and new buildings is quite significant.
The most special thing that we visited in Pristina was Termokiss, a social project founded by their own citizens. They asked permission to the mayor to start using an abandoned building for social and cultural purposes, a place where young people could meet and use their time to think about new projects or to use the space for events. By doing that they would gather young minds to create new things instead of spending their time sitting at a café drinking coffee all day long.
The project is working and they created the same concept in Skopje and they are thinking about doing it in Bosnia. Indeed a cool place to see!

We leave Kosovo knowing a lot of new things about their culture and history. Even though we will never be able to understand 100% about the details of the past conflicts that ended up in a cruel war and why the UCK, the civil army defense is seen for many as heroes and once they were seen from others as terrorists. There is never a good or a bad but we really hope that they can be the country that they want to become: an open minded and modern country with a very rich culture and to be seen and acknowledged for the rest of the world.

We love you Kosovo and we hope to be back very soon! ♡

  • Kosovar hospitality

    14 september 2019, Kosovo ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We met Besi and Luki in Montenegro and we couldn't be happier about changing our plans and spend our day with them and with their family in their hometown.

We were invited to Besi's family where we would meet their parents, his brother, his uncle and his cousin. All the family received us with a big smile while preparing some fli (a traditional Kosovar cake) and some fresh food from the garden. We really felt special being there and like part of the family.

Sometimes we take for granted the fact of being able to travel, but do we really ask ourselves which is our motivation to go travelling, the real reason for it? We did and we realised that every time that we get to experience a moment, a place, a chat with a local, that we've shared something with a stranger and learned something after that moment, we find the meaning of travelling. Because to travel for us means to share and to learn.

We thank you for all your kindness. For opening the doors of your house and to share your time with us. To translate everything for us in order to know a bit more about your culture and history. But specially we are very thankful to have taught us what being a Kosovar means for you and to share your time with us, that was the biggest present that you could give us. Faleminderit guys and we hope to see you very soon somewhere in the world :)

  • Kitschy and brutalist architecture

    20 september 2019, Noord-Macedonië ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Try to imagine a city with brand-new buildings that are planned to look like hundreds of years old next to huge concrete (cement) buildings and an old Ottoman/turkish-style bazaar, all that scattered with thousands of new kitschy sculptures and fountains... That's what Skopje looks like.
The reason for this kind of 'Disneyland' combined with real historical places lies in an awful earthquake in 1963 that destroyed a huge part of the city. We really enjoyed strolling around the city having good fresh food and drinking chai with the locals.
Fun fact: The tastiest sort of grapes is called 'Hamburg' here :-)

  • Thessaloniki and its Mediterranean flair

    21 september 2019, Griekenland ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We made it to Greece and it felt like summer in there! Yeeey!

To get there we had to live a frustration moment and a happy moment. We arrived at the Greek border by train and we payed a taxi driver to bring us passed the border to get the next bus to Thessaloniki. Instead he left us between the Macedonian-Greek border and took the full price agreed although he drove the half of what we had agreed. Frustration.
A funny Greek policeman was surprised to see 2 backpackers crossing the border on foot and he recommended us a place where we could hitchhike. After 10minutes we were driving with Natalja and Borce from Macedonia 180km/h in a BMW to Thessaloniki. Borce felt comfortable recording some Insta stories and taking selfies while zigzaging other cars but you can imagine our scared faces :O

After spending the weekend in Thessaloniki we were very surprised how beautiful this city is and how cool the lifestyle in there is: it's full of nice cafés to chill and cozy restaurants.
Picture Barcelona and remove 90% of its tourists and you will have a good image of how Thessaloniki looks like: modern/traditional buildings, warm and lively streets.

The only thing that we didn't like was that to go into 95% of the pubs/clubs you are asked if you have a reservation; if you don't you aren't allowed to get in. In other cases, they look at you, they see the way you are dressed up and then they tell you straight away that it's full. Stupid. Superficial.

Thanks to our stop we got to meet Charlie from Colorado and we had a wonderful night together. The following day we remembered how a hangover feels like...

    Thessaloniki, highly recommended! ;)
