A short trip to see some sites and do some hiking. Went to Mount St Helens. I have been before but Jan hadn't. Unfortunately the visitor center was closed so I had to be the tour guide. It was actually fun trying to remember some of the facts and stories and I was quite proud of myself for being able to recall some of the details. i.e. How the explosion was silent because all the smoke and debris in the air muffled the sound.Читать далее

Lilly met us at Rainer. Jan and I planned on 2 short hikes but Lilly had other plans for us. We did a long, strenuous 5 hour hike. There were times I thought about turning back but I forced myself to keep going. Jan and I only had light snacks with us but we managed to make it through. The views were wonderful. There was still snow in places. and at the end of the day we were glad we did it. There is no way either of would have made it just a month ago!!!!!Читать далее

On the way back to Seattle, Stopped in Tacoma at the Museum of Glass. My favorite pieces are always the ones the kids design and draw and then the glass artists create in glass. They are the most fun and creative.

Manage to make it to Seattle right after Odin's bedtime. Slept on the couch so he could come see me in the morning.

    Ballard Locks and Bongos

    11 июля 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

Busy day in Seattle. We hiked in the Washington Park Arboretum UW Botanic Gardens and the Japanese garden nearby. Then headed over to the Ballard Chittenden Locks. (https://www.ballardlocks.org/) Lilly met us at the Locks. I didn't realize how interested they would be in seeing how the Locks worked. I guess since I'd seen them before I already knew. We spent at least an hour or two watching boats go each way through the Locks. The funniest moment was when Jan said "It will fill up really fast" thinking that they would just open the gates and let a tsunami of water flood into the Lock. I couldn't help but laugh as the image kept erupting in my mind.

Then we walked around the gardens too. The salmon ladder was closed as they are upgrading.

That night Jan and I went out to eat at Bongos, a Caribbean restaurant Heather and Josh recommended. (http://www.bongosseattle.com/) . The food was excellent and we had a great time sitting at the group table and chatting with some interesting people. That's the one thing I love about traveling with her, is that she seems to meet people so easily.

    On to Portland, OR

    12 июля 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ 🌙 63 °F

It turned out that Barry was coming to Seattle for a week and of course I did not want to be there. So Jan and I came up with a plan. She was going to Portland to visit with some friends on her way back to TX, so we got me invited to tag along. Kassy lives with her boyfriend in a big house on several acres of land. Jay and I were able to sleep in the van and partake of all the other activities. They have 2 dogs and Jay fit right in. She even got to take a ride in a golf cart and promptly threw up her dinner afterwards.

It was colder than in Seattle and I actually got to wear some of the clothes I brought with me: long pants, jeans, long sleeve shirts and even my winter coat one night!

We drove along the Colombia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The parking lots at all the trailheads were pretty much full. We did manage a short hike but mostly spent our time driving. The north side of the river is in Washington while the south side, where we were mostly driving is in Oregon.

Then finally found a destination goal: Stonehenge in Maryhill, WA

It is supposedly built to scale and is what the original Stonhenge in England would look like if it was intact. It was built as a memorial to WW I by a man who heard that the original was used to sacrifice people to the gods and he felt that "in war we continue to sacrifice our fellow humans".
It was interesting to see it but it was much smaller than I expected. I have no desire to see the original anymore even though friends claim it is full of mystery etc. I have also heard it is very touristy and crowded while this one was almost empty and had awesome views of the river below.

I happened to see a post on one of my Facebook groups where someone asked about camping around Deception Pass. One of the replies mentioned this sculpture park and posted a picture. Couldn't get Josh & Heather to join me but I decided to stop there on my way back to Seattle. So glad I did.

It is a lovely little walk though a wooded forest with interesting sculpture that fit right in with the setting. And you can listen to the artists talking about their works on your phone.

The nearby town was having an arts & crofts festival and of course I had to stop and brouse.

    17 августа 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Odin had his first half day at Kindergarten. Afterwards I took him on an outing for the rest of the day. We went to the Seattle Aquarium which he enjoyed. It is a pretty small aquarium but there was enough to see to keep us entertained for a couple of hours. Then we walked to the nearby pier.

He was a.little afraid to ride a horse on the carousel but I convinced him to give it a try and he rode the.horse the whole time with one arm around my shoulder.

We also went on the ferris wheel. He was very proud of having over come his fears so easily. I spent a lot more money than I planned but we had a wonderful day

    Sun Tour of East Glacier

    20 августа 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

We put some of my stuff in Arlie's room & car so we could take one car today. I had made reservations for a half day tour with Sun Tours. The weather was not very cooperative but it was still a good tour. Our guide & driver was a young native American from the Blackfeet tribe. He was very informative and did an excellent job.

The sun started to come out towards the end of the tour and we had a nice walk to Sun Point.

After lunch we attempted to go to Many Glacier but the road was under construction and it seemed like we would never get there so we went back to going to the sun road and drove all the way to Apgar Village and then around the southern edge of the park & back to Cut Bank.

    Flathead Lake

    21 августа 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

Arlie's first night camping in her car!

It was quite a day. After leaving Cut Bank, We drove south and eventually stopped at the Isaak Walton Inn so Arlie could see the train cars converted to 'hotel rooms'. It was rainy which made us both kinda sleepy. I think my memory was playing tricks on me: 1. I remember the Inn being much larger. 2. I don't remember the caboose being on a dirt road so far from the Inn.

Then we drove on to Flathead Lake. We hadn't made any camping reservation since I couldn't find much. Eventually we found a little visitor center in a little town and found out about a state campground up the road. We drove there to see if we could find a site. It was already after 4pm. The only site available was the handicapped site. The woman in the site next to it said if no one with a handicapped license plate showed up by 6pm, we could legally take it. Arlie parked in the site and we went for a hike and came back about 6, and it was ours.

We were awfully hungry by then and drove back to town for dinner. There was a long wait at both of the restaurants that looked good so we ended up at the grocery store, picked up a few things, and went back to the campsite to cook an easy simple dinner in the rain. Not the best 1st day of camping. And to top it all off, Arlie fell getting out of my van.

We decided to head to Butte today. Arlie is really wanting to go to Craters of the Moon in Idaho & I want to see the Badlands,

On the way to Butte, we visited the National Bison Range. We did get to see a whole herd of bison on the move. And one large elk with massive antlers.

    Devils Tower & Black Hills

    25 августа 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Devils Tower was pretty impressive. Jay got to play service dog so she could hike around the tower with me. I was glad we went early. The parking lot was full when we were done hiking.

I finally bought a NP Passport book. Should have done it when I first started visiting all the parks. Also picked up a Bark Ranger medallion for Jay. It was kind of an expensive souvenir day. I don't know if I will continue to collect the patches from all the parks. Stickers & tokens would be cheaper, take up less room. Will I really do something with the patches eventually????

I also stopped at the West Texas Trail Museum. Had to see a Texas museum in WY. Turns out the Texas Cattle Drives went through here on their way to Canada 🇨🇦. The museum was free and contained lots of old memorabilia from back then.

Crossed into SD and stopped at a visitor center/rest stop. Lovely reststop but SD does not allow overnight parking. The sign said overnight parking was illegal on the interstate which is BS as it is not illegal in most states. WTF SD & WY!!! Anyway the women at the visitor center was helpful. BUT none of the brochures or information mentions or shows the USFS camping available. I guess they was tourists to spend more $$$$.

I found a lovely site in the ......campground at about 5pm. Which allowed me to spend a little time trying to organize some stuff. If I really stick with Van Life, I think I will have to get a bigger rig. In the middle of trying to organize I suddenly became so so tired.. but after laying down , Jay started growling and seemed worried. And then I couldn't sleep. So ....here I am doing my Journaling.

    Tatanka: Story of the Bison

    26 августа 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Great campsite last night on USFS land.
Short hike to the waterfalls this morning. Then I went to Tatanka:
    https://www.storyofthebison.com/
Really enjoyed it. A young native American man, who reminded me so much of David, gave a really interesting talk all about the Lakota and their culture, history and relationship with the Bison. He mentioned that there are now apps for learning many Native languages. And he also mentioned the St. Joseph's School and how it has changed & evolved and is now very important in the education of many of his people.

There was also a movie that explained how the center came to be. Kevin Costner originally planned to build a hotel but that fell through. Eventually he built the center. He donates all the profits to the Lakota people.

There was going to be an event tonight at the center that would feature stories and music. Unfortunately it started raining and I decided to forgo the event.

I did go to a dinosaur park in Rapid City before driving back to the center. But as I got back to the center the rain started up. The thunderstorm got worse & worse, and I decided it was a good night to get a hotel room. So drove back to Rapid City for the night.

Tomorrow I plan to go to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse memorial & the Badlands. Should be a busy day.

Lots to See in South Dakota

    27 августа 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

    What a busy day!

Headed to the Badlands in the morning. On the way, there were billboards evey mile or so for Wall Drugs. It was a Must See Attraction in the little town of Wall. It was actually mote of a mall that had grown out of a drugstore. It was about a city block long. They did have a camping goods store and I bought a flyswatter (cause there is constantly at least 1 fly annoying me while driving or relaxing in Vanette), a small purple backpack and a small salt & pepper shaker.

Then onto the Badlands. Jay wore her service dog vest and we did a couple of short walks. BUT as we were walking, I suddenly saw a huge long horn sheep sitting just ahead of us. It was so still I thought it was a statue...but then it saw Jay and stood up. IT DID NOT LOOK FRIENDLY! We slowly backed away. The rest of the tour was a driving tour!

Next we went to Mount Rushmore. It was interesting and we got a little exercise without wild animal threats. I was not all that impressed. It was smaller than I expected and not all that detailed. Could barely tell who was who.

So...headed south with no plan or idea where I would spend the night. I stopped at a FS Campground, they had 1 spot left.....but $30 for a site without any water & only a pit toilet, surrounded by RVs just didn't seem worth it. So I drove on.

It was already after 6 when I got to the Crazy Horse Memorial. They were still open and who knows when I might be back. I'm so gladi stopped. It is much larger than Rushmore and the detail is so much better. It may take another 50 to 100 years to finish it but the story is intriguing and the movie, visitor center are wonderful. The have a restaurant but it closes at 6:30 so I can't say if it is any good. I stayed for the veteran's memorial service and then the laser light show. The show wasn't all that good but the music was lovely.

I hit the road at 9pm and found a truckstop to sleep at.

    Quite a day

ПутешественникFunny. So many of the students and teachers from Japan had to make it to Mount Rush more and were shocked we had never been. I would have picked Crazy Horse too!

    Full Day of Driving

    28 августа 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Not much to see between the Black Hills of SD and Montrose CO. It was a long day of driving and until I started passing through the Rockies it wasn't very awe inspiring. Drove until late and stopped at a gas station about 10pm. Meeting Arlie in Montrose early in the morning tomorrowЧитать далее

    Black Canyon of the Gunnison

    29 августа 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

After meeting up with Arlie, enjoying a nice shower at her hotel and sharing breakfast, we headed to Black Canyon of the Gunnison. We managed to do a 2 mile even though the elevation was over 8000 ft. And it was pretty warm out. It felt way longer than 2 miles and we really had to pace ourselves. But we did it!!!

Than I did the scenic drive with Jay and Arlie headed to Durango.

    Durango - Silverton Steam 🚂

    30 августа 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

After looking at the possibility of boarding Jay for the day and calling the train depot to find out that they do allow service dogs, I decided it would be easier and less stressful to take her with me. After all I payed $150 to get her qualified. And it turned out great. Arlie just happened to get us seats on the ADA car and although they claimed it was 'full/sold out' there were actually several empty seats. After the train started rolling. I moved up to the front where there was a little extra leg room which allowed Jay to stretch out and take nice long naps (after she got use to the movement and the train whistle)

The views were beautiful and the weather was perfect. It was a bit long as the train doesn't seem to go very fast. But it was relaxing and a nice break.

Monument Rocks & a Massacre Site

    1 сентября 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

After a restless night, Arlie and I headed to Monument Rocks in Kansas. It was a scenic ride while we were still in/near the Rockies, but then it was miles after mile of flat land, grasslands & farms. Cattle grazing, Corn fields, etc.

After driving for hours with not so much as a hill to break-up the skyline, suddenly one comes to these massive rock formations. It is a national monument but it is on private ranch land, no visitor center, just a few signs telling a little about the formations.

Jay immediately defaced the monument. I did clean up after her but later realized there were much larger piles of poop all over the grounds.

Arlie and I took some photos, walked around one of the sites and then took off. It was too hot to really hike or spend much time out in the sun.

We stopped at a Wendy's in some teeny tiny town and then Arlie headed south to Tx and I headed west. I had seen something on the Colorado map that sparked some interest: the Sand Creek Massacre Memorial National Historic Site. I mostly wanted to see how & what they did to address the event. It turns out it was in the middle of nowhere. Truly Nowhere. There were a few scrawny buildings up an eight mile rocky dirt road. It was actually closed, only open Thursday - Sunday. I drove the 8 miles anyway.

    Golden Eagle Campground

    2 сентября 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

I hadn't thought about it being a holiday weekend. Lots of campgrounds were full. I headed towards a supposed BLM area but found this RV & Campground. It was $38 a night which is way more than I usually spend but when I found out they had running water, showers and a Laundromat, I was thrilled. And the tent sites (sites with out hookups) were separated from the RV sites.

I've had a lovely day just showering, doing laundry and trying to reorganize AGAIN so I can find and get to stuff easier.

Oh and the weather is perfect. Not too hot. Not too cold.
