• Old Spanish Trail Rally Day 5

    May 24, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Picking up yesterday's ride story, after we left Hanksville, we caught up with the rest of the pack in the town of Moab, then took Highway 128 north along the Colorado River. Another jaw dropping road. Once we came out of the canyon, we wound up on a high plateau where we could see snowcapped mountains and the canyon walls. I had to stop for pictures. One of the guys stopped with me, and of course we lost the pack. But it was only another 85 miles or so to Grand Junction, so we took our time and eventually made it.

There wasn't a dealership meal last night, but we did have Road Stories at the rally coordinator's hotel. A few drinks, a small meal, and I was off to bed at my hotel across the street.

Today is a rest day and I'm using it to do laundry and catch up on these posts and pictures. No riding planned for today, which should help my foot a bit.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

    May 23, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Yesterday's ride through Zion National Park was absolutely stunning. Just incredible. I literally don't have the words. And the day just kept getting better because we dropped into Bryce Canyon National Park. Again, gorgeous, but cold! We saw a very short snow flurry, and I knew I didn't want to stay up there very long. We didn't. But the cold took its toll on me because the batteries in my heated gloves ran out 75 miles before we got to our hotels in Richfield, Utah. Brrrr!

Today was a shorter day, so we didn't roll until 09:00. But immediately we hit an altitude of 8,385 going over a couple of passes. Because of yesterday's near frostbite, I saved my batteries and didn't turn on my gloves until I couldn't take it anymore. Soooooo worth it though because we took a side trip into Capital Reef National Park. Oh. My. God. Another drop-dead gorgeous canyon. Just incredible natural beauty. So pretty that I and another guy lost the group because we stopped so many times to take pictures 🤣.

Now the two of us are stopped for lunch at Dukes Slick Rick Grill in Hanksville, UT. It's a haven for John Wayne memorabilia.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the ROCKS! ✌️

    May 22, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Bill and I had a great ride yesterday and ended in Henderson just outside of Las Vegas. We wound up on some roads I had already seen on my way to California, but still great. Unfortunately, I missed a road sign I wanted to get the first time, and it snuck up on me again. I love the yellow animal signs. The one I missed warned of burros/donkeys 🤣.

As usual, the HD had a hamburger/hotdog meal for us, then raffle prizes. Remember my last post and the lady who won the banner? Her husband won something again. 🤣🤣 I can't make this stuff up.

In Henderson, I met up with a guy Lumpy who rode both the Texas and the Ozarks rallies. Unfortunately, on his way to Glendale for the start of the rally, he had a spill on his bike in Vegas and cracked a couple of ribs. He's back on the bike, and he and I joined up with Ben's group today.

We left Henderson at 07:30 this morning expecting a long day. We rode through the north side of Lake Mead National Recreation Area as soon as we got out of the city. Breathtaking.

Now, we've stopped at Zion HD for a break and a hamburger/hotdog ☹️ before heading into Zion National Park 😁.

    May 21, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

The ride with the guys yesterday was great. It was nice to ride with a group again.

After reaching Victorville, CA, the HD had a hamburger/hotdog meal for us, then a few of raffle prizes.

Side note: Each evening, there is a banner everyone signs, roughly 3 feet long and 2 feet high with the rally logo on it. I was sitting by the banner eating my burger when a lady came up to sign. We said hi, then she told me how her husband had won one of the raffle prizes the night before. But SHE had to carry it on HER bike, so HE was absolutely NOT allowed to win anything else. She had no more room for his stuff. An hour later, the banner went up for raffle. She won it. 🤣🤣🤣

Today, I'm riding with Bill, the rally organizer and who I rode with in the Ozarks, and we're in Death Valley to get his California 10 Rides For 2021 picture at Badwater. I got.mine here last week, but the area is so beautiful that I said I'd ride with him. We've stopped for lunch in Furnace Creek, a nice oasis about 180 feet below sea level. I think I understand why Death Valley draws so many people to it.

  • Old Spanish Trail Rally Day 1

    May 20, 2021 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 48 °F

After laundry, I went to the Glendale HD to register for the Old Spanish Trail HOG Touring Rally. Once I got back to the room, my foot and ankle were pretty sore, so I didn't go back for the dinner. I still had food in the room anyway.

This morning, I headed into Angeles National Forest. I got about 20 miles in and saw the dreaded sign, "Road Closed Ahead." About that time, a group of bikers was coming down the mountain and gave me the turn around signal. So I did and met up with them at the bottom. They were also on the rally. The lead was a nice guy named Ben from a California HOG Chapter, and he let me jump in with them.

We're now back on the route and have stopped at Arrowhead Lake for lunch. Everything up here looks like a dime store window version of Bavaria. Sad compared to the real thing, but I guess the folks here think it's cool.

  • The Hollywood Sign

    May 18, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

My flat was fixed and I didn't have to replace the tire. The motel I am staying in on Wednesday had Monday and Tuesday available, so I checked in yesterday afternoon. I need a break anyway.

On the way to the motel, I dropped off my chaps at a leather repair shop. One zipper pull fell off yesterday morning, and quite a bit of stitching was coming undone. They should be done tomorrow.

There was a Tacos y Birria La Unica food truck outside the repair shop, so I had two tacos for lunch. Shredded chivo (young goat). Delicious!

My ankle and foot are much better although my toes still hurt to bend. I'm shifting gears without issue now; almost back to normal there.

Today I slept in, then visited the Griffith Observatory grounds where you get a great picture of the iconic Hollywood sign, Venice Beach, and a couple of HDs. I'm at California HD now.

  • Flat Tire on a Mountain in the Dark 😭

    May 17, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

I had a nice time yesterday as I continued on my route to hit a few more HDs before winding into the mountains for California's 50 Rides picture. A few minutes later, the day turned on me.

I got a flat coming down the mountain. I pulled into a dirt area to reinflate it, but bubbles came out of the cable stem nut, which indicated a problem with my tube. So, I called my insurance roadside assistance, Progressive, who found a tow company at 17:45. After a very long wait--over 4 hours (long story why)--the super nice driver Shi picked up me and Willie and took us to the LA HD because it's open on Mondays. We unloaded the bike at 01:00. Luckily, there was a hotel next door to the dealership and they had a room for me. I won't type the problems I had with Progressive, but I will tell you that I was on the phone with a supervisor at 08:00 this morning. 😡😡😡😡😡 (USAA subcontracts motorcycle coverage through Progressive.)

So, now I'm at the Los Angeles HD in Fullerton having the flat fixed and trying to figure out how to salvage the rest of my planned route. At least I don't have to go back up the mountain 🤦.

  • Back to Cali

    May 16, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

After the Vegas dealership, I went to a friend's home to spend the night. She, her boyfriend, and I went to the Arts District around Main Street to meet some folks. We found them in a little place named Horse Trailer Hideout. The bar is a horse trailer 🤣.

We didn't stay out long and I was asleep before 22:30 for a change. Not surprisingly, I was up very early and had the bike ready to roll before 07:00 when they got up, so I was on Interstate 15 headed south before 08:00. Pretty sure I missed the heavy traffic flowing back to Cali after a weekend in Vegas, but the corridor was still busy.

I'm stopped now at the Victorville Harley after having stopped for a large and satisfying lunch at Peggy Sue's. Pretty cool place and a great hot pastrami and swiss sandwich with apple pie a la mode and coffee to top it off. Yummy!

  • Death Valley - 282 Feet Below Sea Level

    May 15, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

Yesterday, I made it through Nevada and into California. The first thing I noticed in Cali is how expensive gas is and that the nozzles have a spring-loaded thingy you have to depress to get the fuel to flow. My first attempt dispersed all over my tank, but I finally got the hang of it. But it's difficult to top off the tank.

CA Highway 6 through the Chalfant Valley was beautiful, splitting the Eastern Sierras as it wound southward. I stayed the night in the little town of Lone Pine.

I left this morning at 05:15 to try to beat the heat in Death Valley. I was absolutely freezing to start with, but it warmed up quickly as the sun rose over the mountains. I got gas before heading into the park...for $3.81 a gallon, 87 octane only 😭. Since I already had a full can of 91 octane, I passed up the next station at 100 miles and made it to civilization (Shoshone) at 09:15, where I used my can.

The beginning of the ride was not what I expected. Up through the mountains on those twisty roads I love. The highest elevation was around 9,400 feet, but the lowest was at Badwater Basin--282 feet below sea level 😱. When I stopped to get my 10 Rides for 2021 photo, I spoke with three guys on baggers who helped take the pics. Nice guys from Tucson on an annual trip.

Then, it was a long 50+-mile ride hugging the mountains through the valley. This was the scenery I had expected. Scrub bushes, blowing sand, flash flood signs. I had to stop once to take a photo of a tortoise crossing sign 🤣. Gonna have to research that.

I kept heading northeast into Nevada, and now I'm at Las Vegas HD for my 30,000-mile service. And replace the two bushings and retaining ring on my jiffy stand, just in case. And reinstall a little heat shield that fell off this morning. And buy a replacement jacket. It's going to be an expensive day 💸.

  • No Gas Next 150 Miles

    May 14, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

From Monument Valley, I twisted back down into Arizona, then up into Utah again. I was staggered by the austere beauty of the landscape. Every crest of the road opened into another magnificent postcard photo. My camera didn't do it justice.

I felt really good, so I kept going past my semi-planned overnight in Kanab, UT, and wound up on Utah Highway 14 that snaked through the Dixie National Forest. Well, it went over it more so than through it. I got a little concerned when I made the turn onto 14 because of the sign "Tire Chains Mandatory When Flashing," but the road goes on, so on I went. Besides, it's practically Summer, right? There was only a bit of snow in the shadows because, as it turns out, the summit was at 9,910 feet. 🤣 UT14 is another must ride road!

14 ends in Cedar City where I spent the night.

I left this morning at 07:00 heading into Nevada for its 50 Rides stop on the Extraterrestrial Highway. Although I plowed through the snow on UT14, I couldn't start my star trek without figuring out how to not run out of gas along the way. I could probably go 150 miles on one tank, but it would be at 10 miles an hour. Instead, I picked up, filled up, and saddled up a two-gallon gas can to get me to the end with a stop at Little A'le'Inn for Nevada's 50 Rides pic.

I'm now stopped at a rest area after making 133.5 miles. The bike says I have 25 miles remaining, but I'm adding my two gallons now. I've been doing roughly 70-75 mph.

After that great ride on US 191, I wound back into New Mexico to spend the night in Gallup. Wow. They're really strict on mask wearing. They wouldn't let me in the hotel--at all--without one. Same at Walmart next door.

I left that totalitarian nightmare at just after 08:00 because at 06:00 the temperature was 29°F. 😱😱😱 Isn't this May?

From Gallup, I went North to the Four Corners Monument, which was closed indefinitely, then cut the corner of Colorado to go into Utah.

I'm now at the Mexican Hat formation in Monument Valley, the photo stop for Utah's 50 Rides, 1 Nation. Oh, if I only had that new Pan American Harley. Then I could zip off on the dirt tracks around the base of the formation and get a really good pic 🤣.

    May 12, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

I had my front tire changed yesterday as planned, but they discovered I had very little front brake pad left, so they changed those, too. Thank goodness I have ABS because I can stop on a dime now.

I decided to keep going from El Paso and spent the night in Las Cruces at the Big Chili Inn 🤣. It was a very inexpensive place and the aircon didn't work, but I couldn't resist staying there. Also, I had a beautiful sunset view from my door 😁.

Today, I left a little before 07:00 to ride the Arizona 50 Rides route. Oh. My. God. If you ride, then you MUST do this route...with a full tank of gas. 90 miles of twisty turny with sheer drop offs and no guardrails. Unfortunately, the road is a bit rough, gravelly where the blacktop has been patched, and occasionally cambered the wrong way or not at all, so I took it pretty easy. No more than 15 over the yellow and no scraping 😉🤣. Bonus! I didn't catch a car until 83 miles in 😱! An absolute rush of a ride! And the views! I just stopped in the middle of the road to take some shots. Put this one at the top of your list!

I'm stopped now in Apache National Forest to give my shoulders a break 🤣. This part is recovering from fire, I assume.

I made it all the way to Stanton, TX, yesterday evening, where I spent the night.

I left this morning at just after 07:00 because I need to be in El Paso by 14:00 for the HD to change my front tire. I could get more miles out of it, but this is a good time to stop for it.

I started this morning in rain gear and heated gloves as it was only 55°F or so and drizzling. I hit two HDs and four Texas Tour stops before peeling off the rain gear and changing gloves. Nice sunny skies since around 09:30. Yay!

I'm typing this after the fact, but at noon I was on both I-10 and I-20 where 20 ends by running into 10. With all the trucks going by at 70-80 mph, I didn't stop to take a selfie 😁.

After a nice visit with family, some I had never seen in person before (2d and 3d cousins), I got caught in a rainstorm heading to the hotel. It pummeled the area for quite some time, but was clear when I left the hotel this morning. For about 30 minutes. By then I'm stopped on the side of the road putting on my rain gear. Again. Damn it!

    May 7, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

The Ride the Ozarks HOG Touring Rally was definitely worth the wet weather. The Pig Trail Scenic Route was as good as they said it would be, twists and hills galore. Best of all, I met several amazing people, a couple of which I'll see again at the next rally.

When I got to the hotel room after the fin dinner and took off my boot, the bruising was starting to show. The swelling is still severe, but I could get my ankle brace and boot on this morning, so it doesn't seem to be worse.

I left this morning just before 08:00 and have now stopped for lunch at a Chili's in Oklahoma on my way back to the Dallas area. I propped up my foot in a chair, which earned me a couple of foul glances, but I needed to elevate it. I haven't had any significant issues riding. 🤞🤞🤞

    May 6, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

So, remember when I had that kickstand issue in the middle of April? Well, the same problem started again yesterday afternoon. This morning, I rode to Old Fort HD to take my picture and was getting off the bike to call Round Rock HD when the stand collapsed. The bike fell on my left ankle, and my stomach turned when I heard a very loud pop. The guys around HD picked up both me and the bike and called an ambulance. Now I'm waiting on the x-ray results to see if anything is broken. It's definitely sprained and very swollen. Fingers crossed I can slap a wrap and a boot on it and call it good for the next 6 weeks.

The dealership was awesome and rolled the bike inside the shop with all my stuff. The manager gave me his card because he has 24/7 access to the building so I can get it out whenever I need. I love Harley!!

Other than this mess, the morning ride down 59 was twisty and quick and smooth. I stopped at a natural dam and had to do a 3-point turn in loose dirt and gravel. Of course I did 🤣.

    May 5, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Yesterday was terrible despite collecting the Missouri 50 Rides and three dealerships. By the time I got to the hotel in Springfield, I was so wet and cold that I had to wear a bedsheet toga so I could put all of my clothes in the dryer. Luckily, they were done before the dinner at the dealership. But no way was I riding anymore, so I Ubered. Over 400 miles in that terrible weather. Why do I do this to myself? 🤣

But today!! Very cold at 39°F but a beautiful sunny sky! Long johns on top and bottom, my hoodie AND my sweatshirt over my coat, and two pairs of gloves kept me from freezing. (Bill loaned me a pair of gloves because my thick, heated gloves are still wet from yesterday 😭.)

I'm riding with Pete and Bill again today, but we're off the recommended route so we can ride the Arkansas 50 Rides a day early. It's called the Pig Trail and it's a twisty turny rollercoaster of a road! Woohoo!!

Twisted Sisters rock!!! Last rally day. Great riding despite the third day in a row of rain. I actually wore my rain gear today 😭, but once I got out of San Antonio, the weather cleared and the Sisters were in pretty good shape.

Yesterday, we stopped at a couple of historic places, the Landmark Inn being one. It's a B&B now,run by the Texas Historical Commission. Really neat place!

BTW, the couple I was riding with didn't come with me today because of the weather, but they were going to see the Alamo and some other Texas stuff, so I forgive them 😉. But seriously, Pete & Mary are awesome, and it was a pleasure riding with them the last two days. I hope I have the chance to visit them in Maine some day soon.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

    Day 40 mileage: 274.0 (total 8072.0)
    50 Rides, 1 Nation: 1 (total 3)
HD Dealership Challenge: 1 (total 79)
    MCGTTX Stops: 1 (total 21)

P.S.: Cheapest 91-93 octane gas today so far at $2.94 a gallon in West San Antonio.

P.P.S.: I saw a large animal definitely not native to Texas behind a very tall fence, but I only got a picture as it was turning away. After some serious Googling, I believe it was a Scimitar oryx because of its horns and markings. More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scimitar_oryx
