  • Big Trees HOG Touring Rally Day 6 End

    5 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

    Redding to Eureka. The End

I left my Redding hotel at 07:00 and beelined west on Highway 299. It was raining and around 50°F, so I had to choose between wearing rain gear to stay dry and plugging in my heated gear to stay warm. I opted for the heated gear, which turned out to be the best option. The drizzle broke once I got over the mountain, but the roads were wet all the way to Eureka. Very slow going all the way, but I made it to my hotel by 10:00.

I was able to check in and offload my bike, then I went to brunch at Café Waterfront, which had an absolutely delicious shrimp, crab, and scallop scramble. They also had live music, a muted trumpet and keyboard duo. Excellent meal and atmosphere in a small space. I did, however, get a lot of sideways glances as I was peeling off my riding gear 🤣.

After brunch, I went a mile down the road to the dealership where I had scheduled a rear tire replacement. And man, did I need it! I had just over 15,000 miles on it and it was as bald as I've ever ridden on, which is another reason why I took the ride so slowly. (Read the post script 🫣.)

Unfortunately, when I started the bike to go to the hotel, the check engine light came on. The codes were for the rear wheel motion sensor (new code and they just changed the tire 🤔) and the right hand control module (historic code). They cleared them out and I went back to the hotel, no problem.

A couple of hours later, I was going back to the dealership for dinner. When I turned on the ignition, the display lit up...then turned itself off. It did that four or five times. And it was doing it so quickly that I couldn't get the bike started until the last time. I rode immediately and directly down the avenue to HD and gave them back the bike. A little while later, the guy said it seemed to be a short in the right hand control module, but they didn't have one in stock. Um, ok.

I said so long to everyone and took Willie back to the hotel. He started fine (because when you're at the repair shop the problem never happens), but when I turned off the ignition, he didn't stop for a few seconds. Ugh. Not sure what I'll do, but I'm not staying here.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

P.S.: While I was waiting on my tire install, a guy came into the store walking slowly and looking pale. I figured he was cold and wet. I was wrong. A mutual friend of ours later explained that he went down in a turn 🙁. On the mountain 🫢. With no guardrail 😳. Part of his rear wheel was literally hanging off the edge of the road 🫣. With a 35-foot drop-off 😱. Luckily, he didn't go over 🫡, and both he and the bike were pretty much ok. I'm pretty sure that what I thought was a look of cold and wet was really a sign that he needed to change his underwear 💩 🤣.

  • Down Day

    6 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 50 °F

I took today off the bike to sleep in, sit in the jacuzzi, and kick my feet up by the fire.

For dinner, I walked to a seafood place on the bay. The meal was far too salty, but the crisp and cold New Zealand Pinot Gris and crunchy and creamy creme brulee were incredibly delicious.

Eureka has a starving artist feel to it, which I'm fairly certain means homeless with style 🤦. Anyway, instead of packing to leave in the morning, I just finished watching "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore." Yippee!!

  • You Can't Petaluma!

    7 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 57 °F

I left the hotel at 08:00 this morning with my heated gloves, pants, and jacket keeping me warm in the 45°F "Summer" here. If this is Summer, I wouldn't want to be here in any of the other seasons 🥶.

I started south on US 101, then took CA 254, Avenue of the Giants. When I rode here last year, it was pouring rain. Today, it's gorgeous! When I stopped at Founders Tree, I had the entire place to myself, at least at first, and made the half-mile walk to the Dyerville Giant without having to talk. I love listening to the forest sounds with no people jabbering, babies crying, or dogs whining. It was so peaceful. But I had to move on.

My second stop was the Shrine Drive Thru Tree. I wanted to do one of these last year, but with the weather.... Well, I did it this year! The Toyota Camry in front of me, however, didn't 🤣. The sign said the tunnel was 7 feet wide, but it sure didn't look like that car would have fit.
    More info: https://www.visitredwoods.com/listing/shrine-dr…

I jumped back up on 101 to make better time, and stopped for lunch in Willets, where I finally peeled off all of my cold weather gear, before heading to my friend's house in Petaluma (long u). It's pronounced like this: You can pet a dog. You can pet a horse. You can pet a llama. But you can't Petaluma 🤣.

When my friend Lonnie finished work, he took us into Downtown Petaluma where we walked around as he played tour guide. This is where they filmed part of the movie American Graffiti! Really cool, very artsy downtown area with a bit of a riverwalk and lots of murals, statues, and stores complimenting the art deco architecture.

After a drink and snack, we grabbed food for dinner at the house. Once at the house, we chilled out in the jacuzzi and watched movies while Lonnie's 3-month-old Jack Russell Terrier puppy chewed everything he could get his mouth on, including Lonnie 🤣.

Now, I'm about to fall asleep on a comfortable couch with a full belly. Aaaahhhhh.

  • Redwood Riders Ride

    8 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

I was invited to a Redwood Riders ride this morning, and because Lonnie had.to work, a couple of the guys picked me up. I got to see a few friends, which was terrific. The ride wasn't many miles long, but it was on little backroads (albeit bumpy ones) through gorgeous countryside. We even popped out on the Pacific Coast for a moment and passed through one of the towns used in Alfred Hitchcock's film "The Birds." I need to watch that again.

We ended at Lavender Bee Farm, which is owned and operated by another rider friend of mine and his wife. I met Richard at the Spring Heat in Arizona Rally earlier this year, and it was nice to see him again.

They hosted a delicious BBQ luncheon for us, and we were able to walk around their three acres to watch the two working honey beehives in action. Super cool.

Since the farm was less than 4 miles from Lonnie's house, I took myself back to his house. We ran to a couple of stores and spent the rest of the evening watching the NBA playoff game and a movie.

Another good day with good friends.

  • North To Oregon

    9 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

I left Lonnie's this morning around 08:00, heading east towards Sacramento to grab a dealership, then turn north. I'm fairly sure I rode through Napa Valley because of all the signs and vineyards. At one intersection there was a rafter/flock of turkeys grazing in the field. Cool.

I took I-5 North and made it into Oregon after several stops. Mt. Shasta was beautiful with its crown of snow in the brilliant (and hot) sunshine. I was really tired today and considered stopping for the day before noon. But I pressed on to Medford.

Now I'm in a KOA "kabin" and hoping to get some good rest tonight.

  • Crater Lake, Sort Of

    10 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

This morning started off well. I packed up and rolled about 07:30, grabbing "clear" (no additives or ethanol) premium 92 octane fuel and breakfast at the corner store. Then I headed north, slowly climbing in elevation towards Crater Lake National Park.

Around 09:00, I began hitting clouds, which were misting, but not enough to put my rain gear on. I did, however, stop to put my heavy gloves on. The temperature was dropping and, even with the heated grips, my fingerless gloves weren't enough.

Another couple of thousand feet and I was wet, cold, and ready to not be rising to Crater Lake. But I kept going. As I watched the snow banks getting deeper, I wondered if I should be riding on the wet road because of black ice, but the Park Service lady assured me the temperature wasn't supposed to drop until it would snow on Sunday 😳. Okay.

So, I kept going, higher and higher, through the avalanche area that was still heavy with snow, up to the Visitor Center on the rim of the Crater. Of course, the entire Crater was filled with cloud, and because of the snow along the edge of the rim, the sidewalks were either closed or buried, so I didn't actually get to see Crater Lake this year. I did get my passport stamp though, so check a 19th state off the list. Yippee.

Although the Rim Road and North Entrance we're open today, I had had enough and backtracked out of the West Gate and turned south to go north. I was headed for Bend, but decided to go into Klamath Falls for gas. I'm was wet and cold, but drying and warming, so when I found a Loves truck stop, I stopped for a out 2 hours to eat, make some calls, send some emails, and look for lodging.

I found a tent site at the nearby KOA for 2 nights, and another 2 nights at the KOA near Bend, so my weekend is set.

Right now I'm sitting in the KOA store/office with my computer adding photos to and getting caught up with these posts. I'm not sure what I'll be doing tonight, but I'll be warm and dry doing it 😉.

Update: I had chicken korma and garlic naan at an Indian place in downtown. Yum 😋!

  • Downtown & The Falls

    11 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

I wanted to do something nearby today, so I rode into the downtown area where I had dinner last night and had brunch at the Waffle Hut, which was packed with locals (always a good sign). The area is right on the lake, and I walked to the park to check out what I rode by yesterday.

There was an old steam locomotive on display and loads of water birds. Downtown also has lots of murals and street art. The library was having a sale, so I picked up a brand new paperback to read...for a dime 😱. I have them a dollar.

Then I rode a couple of miles to a hilltop that looked like it would be a good place to view the falls. The overlook turned out to be an unfinished subdivision with a blocked road...but not a blocked sidewalk 😉. I rode to the top of the hill, then walked around to get some cool shots.

Just across the river, where you're supposed to park and walk to see the falls 🤣, was a small park looking at Pelican Marina. A very appropriate name considering all the pelicans in the area.

I was back to the campground by 14:00, read all of my book (The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett), and DoorDashed the same meal I had last night. Now, I'm in the tent ready to crash. Great day.

    12 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 45 °F

I woke to the rain, packed in the rain, broke down my tent in the rain, left Klamath Falls KOA in the rain, took a picture of the Bend HD shop in the rain, arrived Central Oregon KOA in the rain, setup my tent in the rain, and unpacked in the rain.

I left Klamath Falls at 09:00 and got to next KOA near Culver around 14:00. I sat in the store and the laundry room until sunset, when the weather finally started to clear. It's been a cold, wet day. I only hope I have enough clothes to not freeze tonight. The forecast is dry but 35-40°F for the low 🥶.

  • Oregon Summer Is COLD 🥶

    13 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

At 04:30, I woke up shivering in the 35°F "summer" and went directly to the laundry room to read. I read one book yesterday and started a second last night. After I finished the second book around noon, I started a 1,000-piece puzzle. I finished that at 21:00.

When I went to take a shower sometime in the morning, I noticed a pair of yoga pants that were still in the same place as yesterday with shampoo and soap bottles next to it. Assuming all were abandoned, I tried the pants on and although they were snug (which is probably how they're supposed to fit), I decided to wear them as an extra layer on top of my long johns and under my heated gear pants. I have 3 shirts on plus my heated gear jacket. I don't know if I have enough clothes enough to make it through the night 🥶. At least it's not raining, too.

  • Oregon To Idaho

    14 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Well, I only made it to 02:30 before having to go to the laundry room for warmth. I was able to nap in the rocking chair though. At 07:00 I started packing and breaking down the tent. At 08:00, I was standing at the store door to get coffee 🤣. By 09:00, I had on pretty much all of my clothes and my heated gear, including the insoles, and was rolling south to go east.

Unlike the days I rode from Medford to Klamath Falls and then to Culver, it wasn't raining and I got to see some stuff. Just north of Bend there is an alpaca farm, and not long after that I spied several Longhorns with calves. Today's ride was mostly through what signs called the Great Plains or the High Plains, which was mostly cattle. I also saw a small herd of mule deer who looked like they wanted to cross the road to get it a small pond. I got past them first. When I got lower in altitude, from 4,500 to about 2,000 feet, the land turned to irrigated crops. There were three common crops, a grain, a wheat, and onions. No doubt on the onions because the smell was so thick I could taste them.

I got to Meridian (Boise) at 17:30 (Mountain time now) with only a little dampness on my leathers from some light sprinkles and road spray. It's was a good day because my heated gear kept me toasty warm all day and I didn't run out of gas despite having to go 160 miles.

Unfortunately, I am terribly sad that I lost my red neck gaiter somewhere on the road late today. It was a gift from the Ramstein Military HOG Chapter 2015 Christmas Party we had about a week before I left Germany. I was wearing it inside my helmet to keep my head and ears warmer. The wind must have sucked it out. 😭😭😭

After I checked in and unloaded the bike, which is when I realized the gaiter was gone, I walked across the street to the grocery store and am now sitting in the room, messing with my GPS, drinking a cold beverage, and feeling like it's only 19:30.

  • Gem of a Ride HOG Touring Rally Day 1

    16 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 68 °F

Today I decided to beeline to Twin Falls to get my 10 Rides for 2022 photo at Snake River where Evel Knievel unsuccessfully attempted to jump the canyon with his "skycycle" aka rocket.

On the way back to Meridian, I stopped at Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument Visitor's Center for a moment.

Then I hit the dealership where I had service yesterday and where the Gem of a Ride HOG Touring Rally begins. I saw a lot of people I know, including my two buds from Ohio who have come out to join me, Dano and Rob. I haven't seen Rob since 2020 and Dano since September, so it's wonderful to be near them again.

We hung out for a while, then went to the hotel to get them checked in. Rob took a nap while Dano and I got caught up on our lives, then we all went back to the HD for dinner.

A good meal with good conversation and decisions about where and when to meet in the morning, then it was back to the hotel. Now, I'm just about ready to crash. Another really good day.

Missoula to Butte, the long way: US93 south to MT43 east, then Route 278 to Dillon (where Dano went to college), and finally Routes 41 and 2 into Butte.

Worse weather today, but we still enjoyed parts of it, including our lunch stop in Wisdom and our visit to Big Hole National Battlefield.

We were in mostly misty rain the majority of the day, but as we came through the pass on Route 2 just south of Butte, we hit a heavy down pour with, yes, pea-sized hail. That sucked.

Dano's brother Charlie met up with us at the dealership, so they and Rob left early for dinner with him. The rest of us had a great meal and my roommate Gina and I are now in our room, dry and warm and about to crash. Good day.

Butte MT to Idaho Falls ID, the short way: I-15.

We planned to visit Craters of the Moon National Monument, but the weather was terrible again.

We were hopeful about an hour and a half after leaving Butte this morning and jumped off the interstate by the Clark Canyon Reservoir to squiggle southwest to Craters. About 10 miles west on Route 324, we passed two bikers giving us hand signals to turn around. We pulled over to look at maps and, while Tom chased down the guys to get the story, a woman in a Kubota stopped to talk to us. Both the woman and the guys confirmed that our Route became 15 miles of dirt (aka mud) further down 💩😭. Not wanting to risk it, we backtracked to the interstate. By the time we stopped in Dubois (aka Ghost Town) for lunch at the diner (aka gas station), we all were done with the weather, so we beelined on I-15 to our hotels.

We had a nice taco truck meal at the dealership, then a few beers at the microbrewery next to the hotel. Really good day despite the weather.

  • Gem of a Ride Rally Day 7 THE END

    22 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Green River, WY, to Lindon, UT. THE END

South down the west side of Flaming Gorge to Red Canyon, then a quick stop at the dam before lunch in Dutch John, WY.

Continuing south to Vernal, UT, then west on US191 and US40 to Heber City. Through the gorge on US189 into Lindon and the Timpanogos HD, where we wrapped up the rally with a terrific dinner and fellowship.

Somewhere along the way, I managed to swerve the bike through and duck my head below the debris caused by a tire blowing out on the vehicle in front of me. But despite that, it was another fantastic day with great folks and amazing scenery.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

  • Salt Lake City to Rapid City

    23 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

I left SLC this morning at 05:30 following Chris Harrison, the western region HOG Regional Manager, into Wyoming. He was headed to Cody, so we split off at 11:45 in Thermopolis, WY, after about 330 miles down.

I did the remaining 385 miles alone, which was nice after leading a group for the past week. I didn't take time to stop at the overlooks for some pictures along Wind River or Powder River Pass, so I'll have to come back another time.

754 miles and 11.5 hours after leaving SLC, I arrived in Rapid City still feeling pretty good. I hope that lasts over the next two weeks 🤞.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

  • Maintenance & Shopping

    24 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 63 °F

Today I had maintenance at Black Hills Harley. They put on a new front tire, did a 5,000-mile service, and gave the bike a good look to make sure everything was good to go. I feel confident that Willie can get me through this ride.

I also did some shopping for a few things for the road and am in the process of reorganizing my pack to make essentials the easiest to access. It will look like I'm carrying more than before because everything is not condensed, but the weight is pretty much the same.

This evening we had a Meet & Greet at the hotel, and I've been meeting as many folks as I can. The stories are fascinating. I hope I have some great ones to tell after I make it back to South Dakota for the finish party on 9 July. And I will make it back.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

  • Getting Ready

    25 de junho de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Today I did laundry, repacked, and loaded the bike.

We had a rider briefing where Beth, Jim Red Cloud's widow, told us the significance of the dance sticks.

    Horse dance sticks:
    - black: west; place to go after death; "respect"
    - red: north, where pipestone comes from "honor"
    - east: yellow; for knowledge that comes with day/sun; "integrity"
    - white: south; healing; "compassion"
    - green: strength from mother earth; "perseverance"; given to last finisher
    - blue: for the Creator; "sacrifice"; given to family if someone dies on the ride

I ran into my Air Force buddy Brent at the briefing, and I intend to ride out with him and his friend, if the organizers don't put us in some sort of order.

We have to be at the Harley dealership at 05:00, so I'm already in bed about to go to sleep. I'll post my beginning mileage tomorrow, but after that I don't know how often I'll post. You can still follow my location, though. Just click the map above.
